CHAPTER 16

"Watari," L breathed out in relief.

Light grinned. "He wouldn't die so easily. Even you should know that!"

Laughter.

The two were hysterically laughing to tears, the librarian merely gave up trying to hush them, thinking they just needed mental help.

It didn't matter how many eyes were on the unlikely pair.

All that did matter was the fact that the lucky bastard survived.

". . . n-no. No. No!"

"Wait L!-"

And with that, he ran away again.

Watari's eyes opened and Light's jaw fell open. He signaled for him to stay quiet and he closed back his eyes again. The nurse also smirked. This was all an act, wasn't it? The elder merely laughed good-heartily, his eyes were sparkling of life. Why the actual hell would Watari go to such measures? Light just felt so done with the world. He wanted to go home and nap. Not deal with naughty old men. Wait, not that way. I mean Ryuzaki was older but- Goddammit, why does my mind always wander off to that sugar obsessed freak!

"Watari, you-"

His eyes crinkled as he smiled widely. "Decided I may as well prank that kid in my last week of living," he joked. "Besides, L needs to learn to let go. He's had me since childhood. As much as it pains me to think it, my time is running out. However, it doesn't mean L's needs to as well."

Light sighed. "So you really are dying, bastard."

"Correct, Light."

"Why must this always-"

"Enough about me," he winked. "Go get him, tiger!"

Light blinked in confusion before heading out once again to track him down for the second time. Kami-sama, this could be made into some TV show. Minute to Find Him! Wheel of Deduction! Justice Feud! The list could go on forever and encircle the Earth twice. Light found L against the wall, knees tucked into his chest. His head was burrowed into his knees, disheveled strands of black sticking out into every direction.

"L. . ."

Quiet sounds of uneven breathing captured Light's attention.

Was he? . . .

"Leave," the detective rasped out softly, crying sounds muffled against his tear stained clothing.

"No. I won't, Ryuzaki."

He remained silent.

Seconds, minutes, seemingly hours flew by.

Without making any sounds, Light sat beside him. He faced upwards, head resting against the same wall. Still no reaction from L.

"Hey, Ryuzaki," Light started to ramble. "Life isn't fair. It's not something that has a remote control that allows us humans to control. That's what makes life so beautiful. You don't know when it ends and that scares most. But, honestly, you shouldn't be. So what if people die? People are also born. Everything happens for a reason. This happens then that happens. Elementary really. Ryuzaki. . . I'm certain you were aware that all humans are bound to die sometime. Even Watari isn't immortal. The thing that you should be most concerned about is your last moments with Watari. The doctors aren't sure when he'll pass away. Anywhere from tomorrow to next week."

Light sighed and rested his arm around L's stiff, agitated, shoulders.

"If you keep running away, you'll be left with regrets and unanswered questions. What if I did this? What if I only said this? Would so and so be still?"

The brunette smiled when he could feel his body gradually relax.

"Alright. Let's go back to the old fart and-"

Something fell on his left shoulder.

The jackass fell asleep. 'Insomniac' his lazy ass! However, today has been such a stressful day for everyone. It'd make sense for someone that sleep deprived to just be knocked out.

And Light tried so hard to be compassionate and comforting!-

". . . hm. . ." The detective sleepily murmured and nuzzled into Light's neck.

Blood rushed to his face. Too goddamn close! Light was about to push him off and wake up the son of a gun when something else abruptly occurred.

"I. . . I think I love. . . him," he continued to sleep talk restlessly. 「あなたですから、好きだ。。。らいとくんは私にたって得別よう。。。きみがとてもだいすきもちろん。。。。」

What?

Light couldn't believe his ears.

Did he really just?

No way.

Impossible.

Why the hell would anyone (besides Misa) fall in love with him? Light and L are supposed to be enemies not lovers! This was all screwed up. Yet why did his heart flutter violently when he heard those words escape from his mouth so innocently? Light would never admit this out loud. However, he didn't mind that L did. He knew that he was slowly reciprocating the exact feelings. Light was terrified. For his entire life, he's been surrounded by girls. Girls, not boys. Had Light been suppressing his bisexual side of him? Or does he just like L because he's L? Why was it only L that affected him this way? Light hated it. Light hated these weird sensations that L triggered. He hated that he didn't know what to think of it or how to act upon it. Not like there was a manual written out for all of this. Top student yet can't even deal with the stupid art of confessing. What a bad joke.

Light chuckled and smoothed out a certain panda looking detective's unruly hair, relishing its silky feel under his finger tips.

"Perhaps love isn't as shitty as I dubbed it for," he mused with a crooked smile.

Only time will tell.
