CHAPTER 17

Unbeknownst to Light, the detective is actually conscious and faked the entire act.

He purposefully faked it to see his reaction.

Like Light, L despised the very concept of losing.

In that sense, they were a bunch of immature little boys who couldn't admit to their obvious feelings. Judging from Light's reaction, he was completely fine with it. That caused great relief in the detective. He assumed he would never consider it. Light does have Misa-chan and is supposedly heterosexual. Well, L guesses it is possible. To be straight yet fall in love with someone of the same sex yet still label yourself as 'straight'. If there is anything L has learned in life, anything can happen, given the correct circumstances.

L did, in fact, love Light.

In every way, it was wrong.

However, so naturally right.

His voice still kept repeating in his mind.

"Perhaps love isn't as shitty as I dubbed it for."

What is that supposed to mean?

Is L's feelings reciprocated? Or is Light simply pitying him? Why is this so hard? Why can't there be an exact science to all of this? If only, L could read minds. Everything would be so much easier. But then again, also not very entertaining. Everything in moderation, he supposed.

"Hey," a soft velvety voice pierced through his dense veil of thoughts. "Wakey wakey, princess."

L's eyes fluttered open and he frowned. "I am not a princess."

"Prince, princess. Same thing," Light stood up and a brilliant smile spread across his face, hand out stretched. "Let's go, Ryuzaki."

Hesitantly, L reached his hand and stood up, back hunched back.

"You're right. Your posture is anything but royalty," Light laughed out loud.

The detective shook his head in dismay but, secretly, sneaked a small smile. "As long as you are mine, I do not simply care what I am," L mumbled quietly to himself, not catching his spoken thought.

"Hm?" He stopped to look at him in confusion.

"Nothing relevant," L answered.

"Whatever you say," Light replied with an unsure tone. "So. . ."

"So?"

"Apparently a certain someone has fallen for my charm recently," Light grinned.

L's body instantly stiffened. "I-Is that so, Light-kun?"

"Yes," his eyes sparkled in mischief. "As my partner in law, what could I possible do to put justice to the confession of sorts?"

"W-why are you asking me?"

"Number one detective. Wait, no, top three detectives; pardon me," he smirked.

"If you insist. . ." L muttered. "If you do in fact feel the same way towards him o-or her, despite having Misa-chan, then, um, pursue the person!"

"It's not like you to talk in this manner, Ryuzaki."

"Blame the cold weather."

"Cold?"

"Yes, Light-kun. Cold. Would you like a definition?"

Light rolled his eyes. "No thanks, that's elementary crap."

"Who knows?"

"Why do you even. . . feel that way towards me, Ryuzaki?"

"You can answer that yourself, Light-kun."

"Are you shy?"

"Hardly."

"It would explain why Watari would have to reveal your voice through a laptop every time. Ha, world's brightest detective turns out to be shy? What a joke."

"How are shy people bad?"

"So you are!"

"I never stated that-"

"Don't deny it-"

"I am simply correcting your misunderstandings-"

"Sure, sure, and I am an immortal being."

"That sounds like something Kira would say."

"Why do you always-"

"Just because."

"You really are something, Ryuzaki."

"I am well aware that I am 'something' in this world."

"Idiot."

"Excuse me."

"You are excused."

"Who is the so-called 'idiot' now?"

"You make no sense whatsoever, Ryuzaki."

"I pity you for not being able to differentiate from nonsense and what is right."

"Is this the whole Kira talk again? I am not Kira-"

"We all know already, Light-kun. Your motive is not entirely bad. Just death is bad."

Light sighed.

"Death is a necessity in life. Life cannot exist without death. Nutrients need to be re-used in ecosystems. Basic high school biology, Ryuzaki."

"I was not pertaining to those facts."

"Then?"

"You would not understand."

"Then help me understand."

"I do not wish to put so much effort."

"Am I not worth the effort?"

"Again, I never stated-"

"So you do love me."

"Again, I did not-"

"Oh, yes you did!"

"When?"

"Unconsciously!"

"That hardly counts. You do not know if I was talking about someone else."

"I am positive it is me."

"You wish."

"What a little boy come back. You wish."

"Shush."

"Why are you shutting me up when I am trying to say something-"

"Say it then."

"You told me to 'shush' though-"

"That was the past."

"Mere seconds ago-"

"Please."

"Fine."

". . ."

". . ."

". . ."

"You're just staring at me, Light-kun, mmmph!"
