CHAPTER 18
"You're just staring at me, Light-kun, mmmph!"
. . .
L couldn't believe it. Was this real? As quick as their lips met, the two parted. It was similar to the first time that this 'accident' occurred.
L's eyes held no emotion, surveying the brunette's reaction, still against him. Immediately, Light pushed him off, heavily breathing with pink faintly dusted on his cheeks.
It was incredibly different this time around though.
L could not quite pinpoint it. Even if it lasted for only mere seconds, there was something that changed in Light. The detective just could not seem to deduce it out. It was frustrating to the core. Why was it always only him that he could not deduce accurately? Sure enough, L knew he was Kira. That did not pose any relevance to him now. He has gone too far to go back. L has fallen hard for Light to his dismay. Can he still go back? L doubts he can. Truthfully, he has never truly felt this way for anyone before. This is all new uncharted territory. Frankly. . . L was scared.
Perhaps it was becoming more than just a game.
Originally, all of this was supposed to be just all fun and games.
No Beyond. No falling for each other. None of that.
Whatever L could not deduce terrified him.
Light smirked at L's blank expression.
"It's okay," he shook his head. "You should be happy that I admitted defeat."
His usually unreadable black orbs were filled with pure shock.
"Defeat?"
"You heard me right the first time, Ryuzaki," Light chuckled lightly.
None of this made any sense to L!
L attempted to look up with his hunched back, eyebrows all scrunched up.
"Why, Light-kun?"
He pursued his lips then sighed.
"You should know. You're the one who wanted results after all," Light glanced at L then at the ground.
He chewed on his thumb.
"Originally so."
"Originally?"
"I never expected it to turn out this way. . ."
"I'm lost. Wasn't this game to prove I am not, in fact, heterosexual?"
"Exactly. You could still be that and trick me into thinking you are not."
Light sighed and met his hesitant eyes.
". . . Am I not enough, Ryuzaki?"
"When did I ever-"
The upset brunette cut him off, frowning. "Are you not satisfied with me, L?"
"What are you going on-"
He took one step closer to him, the detective's back collided with the wall. Light's arm trapped L there. At the moment, the two could only focus on themselves.
"Do you think I am pretending to have feelings for you?" Light breathed out in a quiet whisper.
Quiet yet held so much emotion.
L was completely frozen, stuck in his intense gaze.
"Do you?"
Too close for his comfort.
His hot breath tickled the bridge of his nose.
"I . . ." That was all L managed to stammer out.
He has never been faced with this type of scenario before. How should L take this all in? He can barely comprehend of what is happening right now?
"Goddammit!" Light punched the wall, gritting his teeth and L flinched.
"W-what?"
"Just you!" He growled and poked L's tense chest. "You constantly confuse me! Just stop it already!"
"Stop what-"
"Don't try to act all oblivious with me," Light pushed him against the wall, grabbing a fistful of his baggy white shirt. "You very well know what the hell you're doing to me, bastard. I hate you for that."
His heart sunk to the very bottom at those three words.
'I hate you.'
Why did Light Yagami affect him so much?
L almost felt as sad as he did for Watari's abrupt announcement of death. For a minute, the detective thought Light was about to 'spill the beans'. His cardiopulmonary system was working extremely hard at the moment. Every pulse was. He was genuinely perplexed that Light did not seem to notice his white colour transform to pastel pink.
His eyes blazed into L's, flames blowing within them.
"You idiot, how come you still haven't deduced it?"
L was confused. Everything Light-related was confusing. And blinding.
"Deduced what? . . ."
He glared at him.
"You're trying to make me say it out loud," his words were rushed, "when you already damn well know what it is!"
"On the contrary, Light-kun, I have no idea what you have been sputtering out. In addition, you are far too close for comfort-"
"Does it look like I give a-"
"You should care, Light-kun-"
"I do! I care too much!-"
Light covered his mouth and stepped away, having his back face the flabbergasted detective.
". . . legitimately care? . . ."
L observed his back stiffen.
"Apparently," he bitterly muttered. "Bastard, you got it right out of me."
"Pardon. I never deduced that you thought that way," L replied back, eyes shut.
"Well, I fucking do, Ryuzaki!" His voice rose then he heavily sighed.
"Well, well, well!~"
The two instantly froze and looked around for the unknown intruder.
A person eating strawberries sat on the couch, legs crossed, smirking brilliantly.
"How awfully romantic you two are!" He laughed maniacally. "Making me want to threw up the delicious strawberries I have consumed this past hour-"
"What the hell do you want, Beyond?" Light angrily asked, pissed off.
A sadistic grin grew on his face as he played with a single strawberry in his left hand.
"Hm. . . what a good question, Kira-kun! What exactly do I want? Your typical villain would most likely want the world to be in chaos, no? I am different."
"How so?" L tentatively inquired, keeping his distance from his lookalike.
He tilted his head, eyes wide and open. "I am very picky, L. You should know that. I only want specific people to suffer. Do I want them dead? No! Where's the fun in that?~ I wanted to let them suffer by erasing their loved ones around them, of course! Isn't that so much better than the typical cliche 'bad guy'?"
Light narrowed his eyes.
This was a crazy man. He needed to write his name in the Death Note once he figured out his real name.
"No Light," Ryuk randomly appeared beside him. "This man. . . . his name is impossible to find."
Light glanced at him and mouthed, 'Why the hell is it?'
"Even I, a Shinigami, cannot read it," he squinted his eyes, "It's almost like it's blurred out. I can see when he will die though. That is very weird, Light. Have fun with this psycho! I gotta get some more of those apples!"
'No Ryuk wait!'
'Don't do anything too stupid, kiddo,' Ryuk grinned then flew away.
"B," L approached him slowly. "You do not need to do this."
"Oh yes I do!" Beyond shouted. "Because somebody would not bloody let me become their successor! Instead, got a bunch of stupid assholes who are only petty children to fulfill my, my job! Do you know how mad I was back then, L, do you? I tried so hard. If I couldn't become your successor. . . . then why shouldn't I strive to become your #1 enemy? Perhaps even the world's enemy~"
Light glanced back at L. "What is this crazy man going on about-"
He stopped talking when a knife was brought to his neck.
L's eyes widened.
"Beyond Birthday, please," the detective's voice was losing his normally calm tone.
Beyond still held the knife firmly against Light's neck. He simply smirked then petted Light's hair softly.
"Wouldn't it be a shame," he applied more pressure towards his skin, "if your only beloved one was to die right here and there? It'd be the next romantic tragedy hit, don't you think, L?~"
"Please stop," L's voice nearly cracked.
He couldn't bear it.
First, Watari.
And now, Light.
"Maybe you should have thought twice before, L. Not the brightest crayon in the box, ne?~" Beyond licked his lips and lightly cut through his skin.
Light flinched.
Tiny droplets of dark red fell to the ground.
"G-go away, Ryuzaki!" He exclaimed desperately and struggled against Beyond's strong hold. "Go back to the old man!"
"No, I will not do that," L firmly stated, not moving at all.
Although fear was etched on Light's face, he still hollered out, "Leave, Ryuzaki, dammit!"
"Shut it, brat," Beyond seethed then switched his voice. "Or do you want me to do it for you?~"
Without a word, L began walking towards the killer.
"Hoho, what is this?~ Lover's strength? Don't make me vomit again, L." He arched an eyebrow.
Light pleaded him with his eyes to go.
However, L still advanced forward.
A new light shone in his usual nonchalant black orbs.
"Light will not be taken away from my darkened world."
