CHAPTER 20
It all happened so quickly.
Something just clicked within Light.
He immediately threw Beyond to the side with a new found martial arts strength and smashed the poison to the ground. The lethal liquid sizzled on the burnt section of wooden flooring. A strange aura pierced Light's sense of smell. He did not give one damn. The brunette was beyond pissed. How could he even consider suicide to save him? No, the bastard was supposed to retreat! Not join him to meet Death himself! Light would rather have himself killed then witness his L die in front of him by his own hands.
"What the fuck were you thinking?"
Light growled, face mere centimeters from L's bewildered one.
Their eyes met.
Livid to startled.
Dark chocolate brown, charcoal black.
"Idiot," L breathed out and looked over his shoulder. "He's gone."
His anger instantly simmered to nothing as Light looked at the space Beyond once occupied.
"Shit."
"My thoughts exactly in a less eloquent manner," L sighed. "There is a reason why there are acting courses available."
"To catch criminals? You make no sense," Light frowned.
"Of course I was not being serious, Light-kun. Were you genuinely concerned?"
"Concerned? No."
"Then?"
"No words can put my previous feelings to justice."
"All you do is talk about justice."
"Just. . . don't do that ever again."
A small smirk appeared on L's face.
"You just cannot stand the idea of not seeing me, can you? I'm the only challenge to your life."
"What?"
"You cannot bear to live without me. Simply put."
"You sure are something, Ryuzaki," Light stared at the ceiling, feeling 'so done' with everything.
L smiled. "I do appreciate the fact that you were worried-"
"N-No, I wasn't!" Light refuted, hiding the fact that his cheeks were growing in red colour.
He hated the fact that L just knew how get him flustered. Every damn time.
"We both know that is a lie," the detective deduced, sucking his thumb.
"Just shut up if you have nothing good to say," Light muttered.
"That ruins all the entertainment," L pouted slightly.
"What am I going to do with you, Ryuzaki?"
He shrugged his shoulders. "I have no idea, Light-kun. It is up to you."
"See. What is that supposed to mean?"
"Now you are confusing me."
Light growled and hit the wall aggressively.
"Bad Light-kun," L sighed. "That does not translate to destroy my property-"
"All of this is confusing! I thought being Kira was all the problems I'd ever need. But, no," Light continued, releasing his anger that has been bubbling within for far too long, "some freak that dresses like you just had to disrupt my life! Not to mention, he happens to be your rival and the world's greatest criminal!"
The detective merely looked thoughtful.
"And to think handcuffs started this. . . ." L mused, amusement sprayed across his porcelain face.
"Damn those handcuffs," Light scoffed. "At least, they are gone now."
He smirked. "I could always bring them back, Light-kun."
The brunette scowled. "Please don't."
"Why? Are you incapable of self-control when attached to me, hmm?"
His smirk grew wider.
"W-what are you even saying now?!" Light blabbered, desperate to change the topic. "Shouldn't we be pursuing your evil twin?"
"There is no point anymore," L looked to the open window on the far left. "He is too far to track. B knows every trick in the book as well. He only shows himself when he wants to be seen. B is selfish in that way."
"Strangely similar to you."
His eyes narrowed on Light.
"How so? Enlighten me as to how a detective and a criminal are alike."
"Well, before, Watari would only show yourself through a screen! Not only that. You changed your voice too so nobody would recognize your own voice in real life."
L's faced immediately darkened. Light knew he crossed too far when he mentioned the nearly dead.
"Hey, sorry, I didn't mean-"
He looked up, eyes void of emotion. A cloud of darkness floated above them, casting its oblique shadow. The atmosphere was tense.
"Everyone will die in the end," he mumbled and sat down, knees tucked to his chest and head resting on top of his knees. "I suppose I am selfish for wishing that the people I care about will never die. Do you know why I hate losing? Because I hate losing my loved ones."
Light felt incredibly guilty.
"In order to win, we must lose at first," he attempted to be comforting.
". . . why, Light-kun? Why must we suffer to gain something we want?" L murmured quietly, tightening his arms around himself.
"It's only fair. That is why bad must also co-exist with good. Light with shadows. Hot, cold. There must be a balance or things get even worse," Light broke out in a crooked smile. "Would people be able to love without hate? I don't think so. I believe everything happens for a reason, Ryuzaki. Things are this way because they have to be. If no one died, Earth would not be able to sustain so much of humanity. We would overuse what this planet has to offer and ultimately destroy our only home in this universe."
". . . people could just stop reproducing-"
"Then, we lose our humanity! I know you are stubborn; I am as well. But. . . you just have to accept the cold, hard truth, Ryuzaki."
The two remained silent for awhile.
"Hey, Ryuzaki," Light patted his messy locks of hair, "if it helps, I'll stay to help you through the pain. I don't care if I'm Kira. I don't care if you hate me. I'll still stay."
L's body leaned on him and startled the brunette. His steady breathing tickled Light's face.
"Godddammit L," Light sighed. "Of course, you fell asleep. How the hell are you an insomniac anyway?"
