CHAPTER 23

"Say, Light-kun," the detective steered the conversation to another direction, "have you ever heard of Wammy's House?"

Light raised an eyebrow. It did have a familiar ring to it, but, he couldn't quite put a finger on it.

"No?"

"This is a first," L smirked.

"Shut up," Light glared at him, "nobody can know everything."

"They can try to though."

He sighed. "What about this house?"

"It's the reason why we flew all the way here," L gestured to all the busy people in the airport then he focused back to him. "It's one of the several orphanages Watari established."

Light perked up at this new piece of advice. He had not idea that Watari ran one, no, several orphanages. For what purpose though? Surely, they could not have been just regular orphanages if L knew about it. It was highly likely that L lived in one of these establishments since he has never mentioned his parents before. Wait. Did L's parents abandon him at 'Wammy's House'? Was he already different than the norm when younger? So many questions that are unanswered surrounding the world-renowned detective.

"That sounds interesting."

"Judging from your expression," L gently gnawed his thumb, "you seem to be in deep thought. Perhaps wondering if I grew up in one of these orphanages."

Hell, Light wasn't even surprised that L deduced that already.

"Yeah right."

"All shall be answered soon enough," he smirked. "After all, it still takes an hour by vehicle to arrive at our final destination."

"That long?!"

"Well," it looked like L had an urge to roll his eyes, "I did inform you that it is Winchester. As in Winchester, England."

"I know. Doesn't mean you have to talk to me like I don't speak the same language."

"I apologize. I didn't mean to offend you with the truth, Light-kun."

"Don't you use that smart mouth on me," he glared at him.

"This 'smart mouth' has earned me top position as detective," the detective countered, "I do not intend to change my ways that easily."

"Sure," Light smirked brightly, "I still hold advantage over you."

"Hm, how so?"

"Believe me; I just do."

Blood rushed to his face. Too goddamn close! Light was about to push him off and wake up the son of a gun when something else abruptly occurred.

"I. . . I think I love. . . him," he continued to sleep talk restlessly.

His smirk grew larger as the vivid memory passed by.

Light didn't know why, but, it made him slightly happy to know that someone loved him. Even though L was aware of the fact that he was Kira, one of the most feared serial killers, he still accepted him for who he was. It was a pleasant feeling. Light never thought that L, out of all the seven billion, it was him who decided to develop true feelings for him. In the past, girls would want him for only his looks or intelligence. Not for who he really was. Damn it, Light. He has a girlfriend. A loyal one. Yet he still felt something, that didn't quite reach the surface, for that strange young man.

L tilted his head to the side, observing.

"What is it, Light-kun?"

He chuckled briefly, locking eyes with the wondering insomniac. "Nothing of utmost importance."

"I sincerely doubt that."

"Good. Anyway, how are we going to Winchester?"

"When the driver arrives," he answered, "also, he was not informed of the extra passenger."

"And that would be me?"

"Who else could it be?"

"I don't know. You seem to love taking me on surprise, so, I wouldn't be surprised if a random stranger also rode with us."

"It seems like you are finally catching on to me," a dainty smile formed, "I am impressed."

Light scoffed. "Have you been underestimating me this entire time?"

"I will leave that up to your own intellect. You can figure it out. After all, you are the mastermind after Ki-"

He covered his moving lips in a split second, glancing around to see if anybody in the busy crowd noticed.

"Idiot," Light heatedly whispered into his ear, "do you want people to know in the biggest airport of UK?!"

"Hm. It would greatly benefit me so-"

"You know what? Just stop talking for a moment," he rubbed his temples, "I think I'm starting to get a migraine."

"That is what happens when you associate yourself with someone of much higher IQ," L stated, nearly in a teasing tone.

"Shut up, Ryuzaki."

"No, I will not, Light-kun."

"Why are you so damn stubborn today?"

"I am always this 'damn stubborn' every day. I just choose the people I reveal this side to."

"Why me?"

"I think you know already."

"See, you did it again!"

"Hm?"

"Avoiding questions!"

"I am not."

"Yes you are. Every time, you rebound it back to me."

"Do I?"

"I. . . I'm just done, Ryuzaki."

L pouted and scratched his left leg with his sock covered foot.

"I suppose that will need to change in order for it to work," he murmured, eyes gleaming as if hiding something beyond the surface.

"Define 'it'."

"Perhaps you-"

"See! Swerving my questions again!"

"You did not even allow me to finish my own statement," L dully said, shaking his head slightly.

"And people think I'm the evil one," Light mumbled quietly.

"The people think right," the corners of his mouths moved upwards. "Kira's purpose is evil with good intentions. I am not like that at all."

"What? . . ."

"Simply put, I do not see myself as good or evil."

"Somewhere in between?"

He smiled cutely and Light found himself staring in a way men shouldn't be staring at each other in his world.

"A bit of both," L lightly laughed, "isn't that absolutely wonderful?"

"Dangerous as well."

"I assumed you liked danger since you did choose that path."

"What if I just wanted to make this a world where everyone feels safe?"

"That is virtually impossible."

"Not theoretically."

"The world isn't a theory, Light-kun," L scanned the airport, an unreadable expression dominating his porcelain facial canvas, "it truly exists. It takes more than one person to change a place this vast. People wish to believe they can achieve the unattainable. That is where their motivation derives from."

"Perhaps. Perhaps not."

"Do you differ?"

"Of course I do," Light grinned. "No matter how you look at it, it cannot be denied that it takes only one person to start change. Big actions only come from smaller ones."

"It's rather amusing how different our opinions are," he plopped a random Maltesers candy, playing with it inside the depths of his sugar mouth, "and we still somehow remain to be friends. If that is the right word for it."

"I don't know if amusing cuts it. . ." Light stole a candy from the bag L was precariously carrying between only two fingers. "I suppose friendship is something we both have trouble possessing."

L hesitated then simply nodded.

"For once, I agree with you on that."

Silence took over but awkward could not affiliate with the moment. Normally, silence would mean a bad thing.

Peaceful.

Enjoyable.

Unworried.

The two felt content sharing Maltesers without a single word spoken.

"Aren't those love birds heating up the UK, ne?~"

He zoomed in on the unlikely pair: insomniac, freak-looking, detective and perfectionist college student. He adjusted his position on the chair, a creaking sound heard afterwards. He wanted only the best visual from this particularly high angle. Humans were fascinating. Especially when they were begging him to stop seconds before they breathed their last. Oh, the pleasures it would bring him. The high wave of thrill that courses through his body always delivers the right amount of ecstasy-like emotions. There was a reason why he loved strawberries so much.

"I cannot wait to pull out my next card," he announced out loud to himself, rubbing off the red stains decorating his pale concealed face.
