CHAPTER 26

Humming to herself, Misa skipped to Light's (and L's, ugh, why does he always have to interfere) apartment, looking forward to seeing her boyfriend once more. She smiled and fixed her hair with her nimble fingers, holding a bag in her hands. He would love her gift so much, she just knew it!

Eagerly, the blonde knocked on the door.

"Light?~ It's me, Misa!"

Silence.

She pouted.

"Looks like he isn't home..." Her shoulders sagged in disappointment and she trudged back the way she came up until she noticed something folded in the crevices of the door.

Curiously, Misa picked it out and unfolded the strange paper smelling faintly of strawberries.

On it in what appeared to be blood, words were messily written across the porcelain material.

"The one bearing dark shadows under his eyes

The one with a deep dark secret

Their overconfidence will be their downfall

For they cannot see through

The orbs of death"

She nearly dropped it while reading it, eyes widening in shock.

"Oh my god, I have to warn Light!"

Misa yelped and immediately started searching through her purse, desperate to prevent a disaster from unfolding.

Light felt like ripping his hair out.

They have searched this godforsaken library for one hour straight now with no leads at all. It was beginning to look hopeless.

Until his phone began to vibrate in his back pocket.

"Light-kun," L called out, still sitting in his trademark position on the torn couch. "I really do hope that is not what I believe it is."

"Shut up, Ryuzaki," he muttered and answered it. "Hello?"

"Light, oh my god, you have no idea how happy I am to hear your voice right now!-"

"Misa, what happened? Breathe, relax," Light said slowly, confused at all the panic.

"I think someone is going to kill you and L! Just get back home safely, please!"

L arched an eyebrow and mouthed, 'Is she okay?'

Light shook his head, a frown growing deeper.

"There was this weird note left on your door! It had some riddle on it, talking orbs of death," Misa trailed off.

"Can you send me a picture of it, Misa?"

"Yeah, yeah, of course! Give me a minute. Also, it kinda smells like strawberries-"

"Beyond Birthday," L and Light deduced in perfect synchronization, eyes locking with each others, equal burning intensity.

"What? Who's Birthday?" Misa asked, but, alas they both weren't listening to her.

"Is he planning to kill us?" Light questioned in deep thought.

"Most likely. 96%."

"That's pretty much 100%."

"I would prefer to not round and ruin my accuracy, Light-kun."

"Okay, whatever, Mr. Know It All," he rolled his eyes and opened the picture text that Misa sent him.

L walked over and peered over, resting his chin on Light's shoulder. He stiffened at his touch and sent a glare.

"L, you are making me very uncomfortable right now."

"I am well aware of that fact," he patted his rock hard shoulders.

". . . can't you see I'm trying to focus right now?"

"This riddle is straightforward Light-kun," L sighed, "it is simply just a death threat from BB."

"Simply just a death threat? Hello, L, I don't know if this has been processed through that big brain of yours," Light began freaking out, "we are at risk of being killed anytime anywhere with still no fucking leads of where this psychopath is! Aren't you just a little bit worried?!"

He laughed.

"How can you just laugh at this, you bastard?! Is my death a joke to you?!"

"No, no, I never said that, did I? In cases like these, it is best to stay calm and collected-"

"Gee, that is kinda difficult when you know someone genuinely wants to murder you-"

"Light Yagami, please, you have been through far worse before-"

"Are you shitting me? No, nobody has ever wanted to kill me before, goddammit-"

"Again, Light-kun, calm down. I will not allow anyone to murder yo-"

"How can you be so sure, huh? I realize you are the world's greatest detective but that doesn't necessarily mean-"

"No one can be sure, but, I promise that I will try my utmost best-"

"WILL YOU JUST SHUT UP!"

Light was breathing heavily, cheeks red in anger.

L just stood there, observing him with his dark eyes.

He shut his brown ones, taking several deep breaths.

". . . fuck it, let's leave this library first. I need some fresh air," Light stormed out of the room, kicking the door open with one powerful kick.

"Agreed."

Bewildered, L trailed behind him, not daring to say another word in fear of pissing off his already enraged partner.
