CHAPTER 31

Light adjusted himself on his chair to stretch his back and released yet another sigh. That was enough work for a day. His mind was starting to overheat in exhaustion. As L was out and doing his own errands, Light continued to research the words and more about this Beyond Birthday character. To his dismay, he was not able to find a whole lot but at least it was better than nothing. He glanced at the clock on the wall as it tick tock'd quietly in the silence of the room. 10:45PM. Wow, had time passed by that quickly? More importantly, where was L? He was most definitely not the type to stay out late at night. Very suspicious. And without the handcuffs too?

He yawned and shut off the computer, getting off the chair.

Time for some rest.

Light trudged to the bedroom, not bothering to take anything off besides his coat, shoes and socks before falling into the soft king sized bed.

"Mmm, so soft," he murmured, facing the pillow.

Then he proceeded to roll over and tuck himself underneath the layers of blankets, smiling in content and his eyes fluttering shut. What a nice way to end the day. Light allowed himself to be lulled into sweet sleep, immediately succumbing.

"Light!"

A voice hollered from the hallway, a bit slurred.

Startled, Light's eyes bolted open. Who the fuck dared to interrupt his resting time?

"What the actual fuck," Light groaned and rubbed his tired eyes.

L was leaning against the door frame, grinning from ear-to-ear. His hair was somehow gelled back entirely and he was wearing something very different. A black leather jacket, white button up shirt, cuffed ankle ripped black jeans, and white sneakers. He looked hot. Light felt his heartbeat speed up at this sudden change of appearance and tried his best to ignore it, failing. There was something off. The detective's grin grew wider at the sight of Light's reaction and laughed heartily, locking eyes with Light in an intense gaze.

"I've been looking for you," L drawled in a lower tone than his norm.

Light gulped and managed to say back, "W-Why?"

"You confuse me, Light," he sat down on the bed beside him, criss-crossed, "I do not like it. It's ineffective and annoying. I want to get rid of it. I figured out the best way to go about it is to confront the source... which is you, in this case."

"How do I even confuse you?" Light frowned.

"You keep doing things that contradict your thoughts. I can see it, I'm far from an idiot," he inched closer to Light, not noticing him stiffening in response, "I know we, clearly, have our differences. It's understandable given the sides we have put ourselves on. However, you and I cannot deny... that there is something unsaid between us."

Light remained silent, not knowing what to say. Now that L was this close, he was absolutely certain he could smell something. Alcohol? Since when did Mr Sweets Galore drink?!

"I do not have the sufficient experience to know if whatever this is between us is real or fabricated," L continued, "and I hate unresolved matters. It has bothered me to the point where I have resorted to paying the bartenders a visit. I admit, I have never felt this way before. I have no prior knowledge or experience of how to deal with this. Please help me, Light."

"I... I don't even understand," Light ran a head through his hair, "frankly I'm too tired to deal with your shit right now, Ryuzaki. Bother me tomorrow, okay."

"Yes you do!" L grabbed his shoulders and pinned him against the wall of the bed. "Maybe if you just ceased your bullshit then you would understand!"

Now he swears? What is happening?! Light could smell the alcohol off his warm breath, a pleasant sake.

"I seriously don't know-"

"You do," L growled in annoyance, "I hate it when you do this, Light. I really do."

"Okay."

"And all you can say back is okay?... For someone as bright as you are, you sure can be an idiot," L mumbled, his grip loosening.

"Can I please get some sleep? Look I appreciate you and everything you've done. I am just too tired."

"Wait. One question."

"Fine. What is it?"

"Answer honestly."

"I will."

"Promise?"

"Promise."

"..."

"Just ask."

"Do you have romantic feelings for me? If you say no, I have to do something to confirm you really do not have any feelings."

Light's face turned tomato red as he sputtered out, "Wh-wh-what the hell are you talking about?! How much did you drink?!"

"A bottle of sake... shots of vodka... two double shot mojitos... three beers."

"Jesus Christ, why so much?!"

"Because of you. I... I like you more than I can admit sober and I hate that I don't know if it is reciprocated or not. I have never felt this way before and you won't even acknowledge it or that you may even feel the same. Why should I be the one to suffer? You are being unfair, this is not justice at all, Light. I deserve an answer rather than childish ignorance."

He was hopelessly speechless. The words were not coming out of his mouth as Light continued to stared at L in the most lost expression he could fathom.

L's gaze fell from his face and he wrapped his arms around Light's frozen body, resting his head above his stiff shoulder.

"How do I get rid of this weight in my chest? Tell me," his arms tightened.

"I don't know," Light softly replied.

L retracted and planted a gentle kiss on his forehead. "I'll figure how to eventually," he smiled.

"I know you will, you're an insufferable smartass," he rolled his eyes, desperately fighting back the urge to kiss him back.

Goddammit Light, you have a girlfriend! Her name is Misa and you're supposed to be attracted to her not him out of all the people!

"See, I can see it in your eyes. You want me," L smirked and licked his lips. "What's stopping you, hmm?"

"I have a girlfriend-"

L interrupted him by kissing his neck without any warning and Light inhaled sharply, his body slightly quivering from the unexpected touch.

"You're resisting," he breathed between kisses, "but your body says otherwise. Interesting."

"Ryuzaki, I really shouldn't-"

He shut him up by pressing his lips against him harshly and their teeth collided. Light parted his mouth to complain but L took it as an opportunity to allow his tongue to explore his mouth. Light's eyes were wide open in utter shock as L's were closed in bliss. His hands wound in between Light's to pull him closer and that woke Light up as he took his hands on L's shoulders, trying to push him away. Yet L stayed put. Bastard's stronger than he looks. Light growled and L smiled against his lips. They both were gasping for air when their lips separated.

"You bastard," Light spat out.

"You liar, you liked it," L chuckled and took off his leather jacket then began to unbutton his shirt.

"What the fuck are you doing?"

"Changing. Is there an issue?"

"Yes. Do that somewhere else."

L laughed. "You're fun."

"Oh ha ha ha, seriously."

"Why? You're afraid you won't be able to resist me once I'm naked?"

Maybe.

"N-n-no!"

"That's a definite yes."

"Sh-shut u-up!"

"Make me-"

Light clapped his hand over L's moving mouth, glaring.

Then L's foot kicked Light down. His back hit the bed and Light gasped as L's arms firmly held just beyond his shoulders. Some of his hair was becoming more untidy now. His natural scent was hitting him like a wrecking ball and Light bit his lip, despising how good it smelt to him.

"Enjoying the view?"

"Can I please just sleep?"

"Yes."

"Thank god-"

"With me."

"What?!-"
