"I am sorry. We just have to wait and see if it works." Twilight's turned to her best friend. The pain and grief was clearly showing. Her mane looked like it hadn't met a brush before and her eyes, once bright, were dull and bloodshot from lack of sleep.
"Oh, I see. Well, tell me if you think of anything else." Fluttershy turned to leave the library, but her vision grew dark and her legs gave out. When her eyes opened again, Twilight and a nurse were staring down at her.
"Fluttershy?" Her best friend asked.
"What happened?"
"You fainted."
"Well, you didn't need to take me to the hospital because of that."
Twilight and the nurse looked at each other, concerned. They had to tell her, and maybe it would help her get back on her feet.
Twilight took her friend's hoof. "Fluttershy, there is something that nurse needs to tell you. It is very important."
"What is it?"
The nurse picked up a clipboard at the end of the bed, and flipped to a certain page. She handed the clipboard to Fluttershy. "Ms. Fluttershy, we ran some standard tests and we discovered that you . . ."
Four months earlier
Fluttershy hummed as she set up the tea table. She glanced up and pondered. "He's late."
"Who's late?"
The small pegasus squealed and dove under the table. Before she could peek out, a voice came right next to her ear. "Who are we hiding from?"
The entire table shook as Fluttershy had attempted to jump, but met the table. She crawled out rubbing her head. She glared at the draconequus who zapped himself out from under the table.
"Discord..."
"I did knock."
"No, you didn't."
"I didn't? Oh well." A wooden door appeared before him. He knocked four times, and the door disappeared. "Now I did. Happy?"
"Its a little late for that, Discord." Fluttershy laughed. "Sugar?"
"Yes, and is there chocolate milk too, dear?"
"Right here. After what happened last time-" The yellow pegasus started. "Did you just call me 'dear'?"
Discord sputtered into his tea, half choking. A hoof hit his back, helping him breath. "Why would you ask me something like that?" he wheezed.
"Because you just called me that." Fluttershy handed him a glass of water.
"No, I didn't!" Discord turned bright red as he gulped the water. He had called her 'dear' and 'darling' so many times in his mind. It must have just slipped out.
I need to change the subject. A yellow rose bouquet appeared before Fluttershy, distracting her.
"What is this?" The yellow blooms were beautiful and unexpected. None of them spurted water or tried to bite her and all of the thorns were carefully taken off. They were ordinary, yellow roses.
"Spike told me that yellow roses mean friendship, and they match your coat, so I got you some."
Fluttershy smiled and blushed. She smelled the roses and noticed a single bloom that wasn't quite yellow. It was yellow with red tips. Discord was busy with his tea cup that he didn't notice Fluttershy pull it out and set it out of sight. So many thing flew across her mind. She had seen so many young couples give this rose to their special somepony. It meant falling in love or unannounced feelings.
"Twilight, darling, please, you must give us details!"
"I have already told you everything, Rarity. We went to a restaurant, then to the movies."
Pinkie jumped up between the alicorn and the unicorn. "Did he try to do THE MOVE on you? Huh, huh? Did he?"
Twilight blushed at the memory of Flash stretching his hooves up then settling one around her shoulders.
"He did! That blush tells all, Twi!" Applejack mused. "Did ya'll-"
"Please, girls, it was just the first date."
"But the first date is always the most important! It must go splendidly in order for the relationship to work out."
"And how are ya to know, Rarity? When's the last time ya went on more than one date with one stallion?"
"Ummm... Point made."
Spike burped up a note. "Excuse me." Opening it and reading it, he gasped. "Twilight, it is from Celestia. She wants you back in Canterlot, immediately. She says that it is an emergency!"
"Then there is no time to waste." And she took off to the skies with Spike on her back.
"Wait!" Pinkie yelled, running after her. "You didn't finish telling us about your date!"
