Two months ago
Fluttershy sighed and sat up in the bed. A eagle claw pulled her back down. "I didn't say you could leave."
She laughed and pushed against his arms. "Discord, I need to go and take care of the animals, and Rarity is bringing the Cutie Mark Crusaders over at ten."
"Well, I am going to steal what time I can with you." He snapped his fingers. "There the animals are fed, and ten isn't for another two hours."
"Discord . . ."
"How about I take you to breakfast, dear?"
Fluttershy sighed, she wasn't going to win this conversation. "Fine, breakfast, then you have to go to Twilight's. It is her day to watch you."
Discord pouted. "Are you really that eager to be rid of me, my love?"
Fluttershy leaned over and kissed him. "Never." She slipped away and walked toward the stairs. As soon as she was out of sight, Discord summoned a ring box. He opened it, and examined it one last time. He hoped that she liked it. The simple gold band with the sapphire stones suited her perfectly.
"Discord, are you coming?"
"Yes, dear, I am." He snapped the box shut, and walked down the stairs to the love of his life. Fluttershy was gathering the things for pancakes when she found herself sitting in a gazebo with breakfast already served.
"I told you I was taking you to breakfast, and since it is such a beautiful morning, I thought we might eat outside."
Within the hour, the food was gone and the the two were laying back on the blanket staring up at the clouds. Fluttershy gave a contented sigh and leaned into Discord, closing her eyes. The draconequus looked down at the small mare next to him.
It was time.
Discord waved his paw and shaped the clouds to his will (much to the annoyance of the local weather pegasi). He smiled at his handy work.
"Fluttershy, what do you think that cloud looks like?" She looked up to where he was pointing. She squinted.
"I think it looks like a couple standing under an arch with bells above them?"
"Interesting. How about now?"
"Discord! You know that the weather pegasi don't like-" Fluttershy stopped as she read the words that were in the sky.
Will you marry me?
Discord sat up and knelt on one knee. "My beautiful Fluttershy, what is your answer?" He opened the ring box and looked at her anxiously.
Everypony was looking at the sky. Some unicorns and earth ponies asked where it was coming from. Pegasi waved ponies over to the gazebo in the meadow. Among the ponies were the rest of the Mane Six, minus Twilight Sparkle.
The couple didn't not see that they had an audience. Fluttershy had her hooves against her mouth as she looked at the Lord of Chaos. Too many words bubbled to her lips, she was so surprised.
"Fluttershy?" Discord asked starting to get a little nervous. She reached out a hoof and placed it on his cheek. The small pegasus threw herself into her love's arms.
"Yes! Yes! A million times YES!" Discord hugged her close then placed the ring and chain around her neck.
"It's about time!" Rainbow Dash and Applejack yelled. Dash flew down and hugged the two, and the rest of the Mane Six ran up to congratulate them. The gathering of ponies was unsure about how to react about this, but they started cheering when the Elements of Harmony ran up to celebrate.
"OMIGOSH! OMIGOSH! OMIGOSH!" Rarity shouted. "Please let me design your wedding gown darling! Oh, I have to get back to the shop and start designing!"
"This calls for a PARTY! Can I plan your wedding? Of course I can, no pony else would be able to do it as well as I can!" Pinkie Pie announced.
"Ya'll can have the weddin' at Sweet Apple Acres. Maybe just as the apple blossoms are bloomin'?"
"Thank you all so much." Fluttershy couldn't stop smiling. This was one of the happiest days of her life.
"Congratulations," came a regal voice. Everypony bowed as the four Princesses landed next to the happy group.
"Discord," Celestia said, placing a hoof on his shoulder. "It is wonderful that you have found someone that makes you happy." She stepped back and put on a serious face. "I am sorry to say that the celebrations need to be put on hold. We" she nodded to all the princesses "are in need of your services."
They all stood in Discord's main hall, shocked at the news that was just told to them.
"How long have ya known, Twilight?" Applejack knew that this kind of secret could not be carried alone without consequences.
"About a month. We have tried everything," she said, trying to keep the tears from coming. "Not even the Elements would be effective against Mortifero. It would only feed on the power."
Celestia, Luna, and Cadence turned to Fluttershy and Discord. "We wouldn't ask unless we thought it absolutely necessary," Luna said.
"Especially, now that you two are engaged," Cadence added. She was well aware how painful this would be for Fluttershy.
The room was silent. No pony could think of anything to say. Discord looked down at his new fiancée. She was the most shocked at this news, especially since Discord was the only creature who could stop it. Their relationship had come so far in the past months, now it was possible that it would end before it could even begin.
"What are the chances that I survive this?" he asked, pulling Fluttershy closer.
Twilight looked down to the ground. "We don't know. We are not even sure that this is going to-"
"Chaos destroying evil. Of course, there is a chance that this isn't going to work, and if it doesn't-" Discord couldn't get the rest out. He didn't want to think about it. Not today of all days when everything was going so perfectly.
He looked at each of the pony Princesses' faces. He saw the despair, expressions devoid of hope in their faces. They really had no other option.
"So this Mortifero wants to consume everything?" The ponies looked up at the draconequus. "Not while this Lord of Chaos is living and breathing."
Fluttershy gasped. "No," she said barely above a whisper. Discord looked down at her and kissed her forehead. If he didn't try, then everything would be destroyed. He couldn't let that happen.
"I have to do this."
"Discord, no!"
"I love you, Fluttershy. No matter where I am, I will always love you."
Just as the words left his lips, the castle was surrounded in darkness. The stones started to crumble and the windows shattered. Discord threw his magic around everypony there and teleported them to a safe place.
He stood alone in the disintegrating castle. "Looks like it is just you and me, Mortifero."
Fluttershy's eyes flickered open. She groaned as she sat up and took in her surroundings. They were in the field not far from Ponyville. Her friends and the Princesses were scattered around her.
What happened? She thought rubbing her head. A crack of lightning turned her attention to the Everfree Forest. A pit black cloud was hovering about where-
"Discord!" She screamed and started running. Before she got far, she was tackled by Applejack.
"Fluttershy, calm down! He's gonna be fine!"
"You don't know that! He could be hurt, or unconscious, or-"
A big boom and a blinding light flashed across the field. When the ponies could see again, they looked toward the forest. The black cloud was gone. Not even a wisp of it remained. The Princesses closed their eyes and concentrated.
"I don't sense it anymore."
"Neither do we, Sister."
Cadence smiled. "He did it." Fluttershy pushed Applejack off of her and ran towards the forest, her friends following close behind her. None of the sounds or moving shadows scared her. Her mind was set on one creature and his life. Skidding to a stop, Fluttershy looked around the courtyard.
"DISCORD!" she called. No sound, other than the creaking of the now normal castle stones, filled her ears. She pushed open the crooked door and walked into the dark castle. "Discord!" Her voice echoed off of the walls. Bits of stone and sand fell from the ceiling.
A single ray of sunshine illuminated a section of the floor. Fluttershy climbed over some large fallen stones to get there. Nothing lay in the little pool of sunshine, but it still drew her forward. The light was warm and temporarily made her forget her fears and worries. She closed her eyes and drank in the light. The ring against her chest started feeling warm. She looked down and gasped. Her engagement ring was glowing. It lifted off her chest and off her neck. Fluttershy tried to get it back, but it floated out of her reach.
The ring stopped a few feet above her head, and glowed even brighter. The light was so bright, that Fluttershy put her hoof up to shield her eyes. Tears were running down her face. That was the last thing she had of Discord, and now she was losing it. Then the glowing stopped, and the ring landed with a clink on the stones in front of her. She reached toward it and touched it lightly. It wasn't hot, it was comfortably warm. The sunlight glinted off the inside of the band, catching her eye. Fluttershy picked up her ring and twisted it around to read the inside.
Twilight and the others found their friend on the ground, crying in a pool of sunlight.
"Sugar Cube?"
"He's gone," she sobbed. She clutched the ring closer to her chest.
Rainbow Dash flew down to her friend and lay down next to her, pulling her close. "I am so sorry, Flutters."
The others followed Dash's example and gathered around their friend. Twilight was able to teleport all of them to Fluttershy's cottage. They did what they could and went downstairs to inform the Princesses.
Once they were gone, Fluttershy opened up her hooves and looked at the new inscription on the band.
My Light. My Love. My Life.
*ducks behind table* I had to have him disappear somehow!
