"Don, you okay?" Raph called out as he continued to drive.
"I'm fine, if it weren't for Kayla I would probably be rebooting right about now"
A few blasts at them made them stop their car. The mutated badger from before sat across from them with a microphone.
"You got nowhere to go turtle. Shut down your fancy robot, and hand over the keys to your war rig, and maybe I'll let you live and that's a big maybe" Rex grinned.
"Not gonna happen. Way I see it, you're outnumbered, creep." Raph said over his own microphone.
"Take a look around, old reptile" Rex chuckled at them.
"Maybe we can, um, negotiate?" Donnie said weakly.
"Last chance. Surrender and hand over your wheels, or you're gonna be buzzard food"
"You couldn't handle these wheels, Badger. No deal" Raph growled and placed a visual helmet on his head and speed off into the desert.
"Attack!" Rex commanded his men to follow after.
"We're going off road? Are you crazy?" Donnie yelled.
"Crazy wins the Wasteland" Raph replied back.
They had followed Raph and Donnie from a distance. Kayla switching the air flow around them to keep them in the airborn. They had seen them come in contact with Rex's gang and hung back to keep the element of surprise for when things got bad for them.
"I didn't know you could fly" Mira said in awe.
"It's not really flying, I'm just manipulating the air around me and I try not to because it uses too much energy but desperate times call for desperate measures" Kayla answered back "They're taking too much heavy fire"
"Can you get me close? I can cause a distraction" Mira said drawing her weapon.
Kayla nodded "Get ready to jump. Now!" Mira followed her instructions and dropped below. Mira could feel the winds around her slowing her fall.
"Ha, your metal butt's mine now, robot" Rex laughed.
"Going somewhere?" Mira said landing on top of him.
"The sacred map! It's you, the girl marked with the map. Ah! No, I want that map!" Rex shouted as Mira fought him.
Kayla glanced over to the guys as a large train like truck shot at Donnie. She summoned her wind and caught him, placing him and herself on the vehicle's rooftop.
"Kayla! Boy I'm I glad to see you!" Donnie said happily.
"Likewise" She grinned "Now do you think you can handle him while I take care of the rest?" she jerked a thumb behind her.
"Go" Donnie said drawing his weapon. Kayla jumped off and onto one of the motorcycles kicking it's ride off and taking it for her own.
"I hope Raph forgives me for jettisoning some fuel" Donnie said grabbing a barrel to throw out however he didn't get far as more badgers attacked him. He struggled against their hold and used his foot stretching it as much as he could to shove the barrel of fuel.
"Hey, Honey Badgers, you know you're in the same family as the common skunk?" he said in victory as he gave a final shove with his foot and the fuel barrel fell out of the battle vehicle underneath the large train-like truck causing it to explode. the last few badgers reminding were distracted by the explosion giving him enough time to toss them off their ride. Mira and Kayla rode up beside them grinning in victory.
They kept driving until they felt it was safe enough to stop and when they did they began to fix up their rides. Raph walked up to Kayla and Mira rubbing the back of his neck nervously.
"Thanks Kayla" he sighed.
"And?" Kayla raised a brow while crossing her arms over her chest.
"I'm sorry…I shouldn't have left you guys—OW!" he yelped as she punched him hard in the arm.
"Yeah you shouldn't have…but I forgive you" she smirked.
"Glad you're both so persistent" Donnie said as he wielded holes shut.
"Yeah, you're a survivor. I like that. Not bad with a blade either, reminds me of old Leo" Raph told Mira as he shaved his beard.
"You remember?" Kayla asked carefully.
"Bits. It's slowly coming back to me" he admitted as he shaved the last of his beard.
"There's a mystic out there somewhere in the Wasteland. He knows secrets. They say he's a turtle, like you. Some call him the Holy Chalupa" Mira told them and Kayla burst out laughing "I'm telling the truth!" Mira stated in case Kayla thought she was making it all up.
"It's not that sweetheart, I believe you, it just that after so many years he still finds a way to make me laugh" Kayla said wiping away some tears.
"Who?" Mira asked confused.
"Our brother, Michelangelo" Raph answered for her.
"Who happens to be my mate" Kayla smiled softly.
"You're mated to the Holy Chalupa?" Mira gasped and Kayla blushed lightly.
"Well not yet…we would have had it not been for the blast long ago…but he was my boyfriend before we got separated" Kayla said awkwardly.
Donnie sighed in thought if it was his brother, he wouldn't put it past him to come up with a name like the Holy Chalupa.
"Come on let's go before they send more back up after us" Raph motion for everyone to get in. Once everyone was seated inside he began to drive away as Mira told him were to go through the Wastelands.
"Do you really think he could be your brother?" Mira asked.
"A mad hermit living in the wild who calls himself the Holy Chalupa? Sounds like Mikey to me" Donnie said.
"He's not a complete hermit, they say he has a pupil he trains and a healer that stay with him, it's why my clan went looking for them" Mira commented.
Kayla gasped "Skyler!"
The name froze Raph in his seat he didn't understand why but the name made his heart ache "I want to believe it too, guys, but don't get your hopes up"
"It has to be them Raph! All the evidence points to them!" Kayla exclaimed.
"Before my clan was destroyed, they taught that the Holy Chalupa was the only one who could translate the map to Oasis"
"Ahh, Oasis is just fairytales and campfire stories, kid" Raph grunted.
"Don't listen to him, he's always been a downer" Kayla teased.
"Mira, can I see this map you keep talking about?" Donnie asked.
"We were all marked so we could find our way, but I'm the only one left" she extended her arm to him.
"Hmm, doesn't resemble any language I've ever seen" he said as he looked at the lines tattoo in her arm "It just looks like gibberish"
"The Holy Chalupa will know what it means, and the only way to find him is by crossing the Impossible Wasteland"
"Just another desert to me" Raph mumbled.
"I don't know, Raph" Kayla said unsure.
"The Wasteland is miles of the harshest desert imaginable" Donnie informed them.
"The Wasteland is said to drive men mad" Mira said quietly.
"Ha. I'll show them who's mad" Raph smirked before slamming the brakes to come to a full stop.
"Quicksand pits!" Donnie gasped.
"Hold on to your tattoo, kid" Raph grinned.
"Donnie?" Kayla looked over to him.
"On it" he said climbing out to keep an extra eye out as they drove through the pits.
"Stay inside" Kayla patted Mira on her head "Raph easy with the driving" Kayla warned as she too climbed outside to help Donnie guide Raph through.
"Watch it. Left, no, your other left!" Donnie shouted at Raph.
"I see it, I see it" he snapped back.
"Uh…Guys?"
"What?" both Donnie and Raph snapped at Kayla.
"Sandstorm!" she pointed to the large sand cloud heading in their direction. Raph stepped on the gas and drove faster. The ground began to crumble beneath them and the Car lunge forward as Raph speed off a cliff landing on an old freeway.
"That was close" Kayla sighed.
"I'll say, but we should be in the clear for now" Donnie and Kayla both climbed back in and left Raph continue to drive.
It didn't take long for Mira and Kayla to fall asleep while Raph and Donnie drove and kept watch.
"Got something approaching on radar fast" Donnie shouted as the alarms went off in his system.
Out of nowhere something crashed into them, sending them tumbling into the desert. When they got out of the vehicle they saw something moving beneath the sands towards them again.
"Get to those boulders!" Raph pointed.
"Everyone grab a hold of me" Kayla shouted. They all did as they were told and as soon as she was sure that they were holding on tight she used her wind to blast them to the boulders. Raph hadn't held on tight and slipped off.
"Raph!"
"Keep going! I'll distract it for now" he said running away.
Kayla continued to get both Donnie and Mira to safety and once there she set them down and headed back for Raphael.
"By Darwin's beard!" Donnie eyes widen as a larger creature burst from the sand and looked ready to eat Raph.
"Raph hold on, I'm coming!" Kayla shot forward and then someone began to shout random sounds. The monster paused and looked up at the figure making them. Everyone looked towards the source of the sound and saw someone standing on some boulders holding a staff and dressed in a worn-out poncho, faded black jean washed out shorts and a skull mask on his face.
"Booyakasha!" they shouted taking off their skull mask and grinning down at them.
"Can it be?" Donnie whispered.
"Mikey?" Raph squinted as the sun hit his eyes.
"The Holy Chalupa?" Mira gasped.
"Michelangelo!" Kayla wept happily as she flew in the air into his arms and kissed him. Mikey kissed back longingly and pulled her closer to him churring deep in his chest. "I missed you so much" Kayla whispered against his mouth. She noticed that he was taller, lean but more muscular than what she remembered. He had definitely been keeping up with his training. His eyes were more mature too and even though he seemed to be acting carefree she could see he had been through some stuff.
"I missed you too Kay" His voice was deeper.
His thumb brushing over her lips and he kissed her again. He pulled away from her but kept an arm wrapped around her waist as he waved towards his brothers with a large smile on his face.
"You have hair now" Kayla giggled running her fingers through the grey and white long locks held back by an old orange bandana.
"I guess one good thing came out of that mutagen-bomb" he joked before facing his brothers "Big bros! I thought I'd never see you again!" he called out to them "Chompy, look who it is. It's your dadda, Raph!" he and Kayla walked over to the group.
"What? Chompy?" memories flooded into his mind and his mouth dropped at the site of the large turtle that had been chasing them just a few minutes ago "Chompy, wow. You got so big!" Raph smiled.
"I can't believe it. After all this time, you made it, Mikey" Donnie surprised.
"And look at you, D. Awesome robot body. Heavy metal high three—OW" Mikey laughed shaking his hand from the pain.
"Are you truly the mystic called the Holy Chalupa?" Mira walked up to him. Her eyes twinkling in excitement.
"I am the Holy Chalupa or, just Mikey" he smirked.
"Did you really have to pick that as your name" Kayla laughed and Mikey smiled.
"It got your attention didn't it?" he wiggled his brows.
"I am Mira of the Meerkat Clan. It was fate that brought me to you, Holy Chalupa" Mira bowed her head.
"Ah, yes, the universe bringing us together as we were meant to be. Come, we need to leave this area it's not safe here besides there are some other people you might want to see"
"Others?" Donnie said hopeful.
Mikey nodded and motioned for them to follow him while lacing his hand with Kayla's. He settled him self on top of Chompy with Kayla by his side as he led them through the desert to a restaurant that seemed to be standing strong despite everything that happened in the world.
"Wow, the odds of this being the last standing structure in a town like this must be astronomical" Donnie said in fascination.
"It's perfect, right? As long as sand storms, acid rain, and mushroom trolls don't bother you" He shrugged. They walked into the building and gasped as two guns were pointed at them in the dark.
"I'm home, and I brought company" Mikey called out while turning on the light revealing Ice Cream Kitty and another person also wearing a skull mask similar to the one Mikey wore.
"Who are they?" The unidentified male snapped.
"Relax Junior, they're family and this here is my beautiful mate" Mikey nuzzled into Kayla's neck and breathed in her scent.
"Family? Mate? Wait, are these your brothers? That makes them my Uncles too, right?"
"Uncles?" Donnie tilted his head confused.
"All will be explained in due time but first let me give you a tour of the place. Welcome to our casa, we have pizza, water, and electricity" He showed them.
"I wouldn't recommend the pizza" Junior said flatly.
"I don't even have a stomach anymore, and I want to throw up" Donnie said as he opened one of the pizza containers and dropped the tin in disgust as it was old and rotting from the years.
"Told you and the water is over there" Junior pointed towards the barrels in the corner as he took off his mask revealing light green skin and a human like face with grey eyes. He had no ears and was dress in ripped jeans with a tan scarf around his neck. He had some type of armor that covered his chest and back. It almost looked like a plastron and carapace but it was more form fitting. He looked way too familiar.
"Who did you say you were again?" Kayla tilted her head and took a step closer to the young man. Her eyes noticing that it wasn't armor. It couldn't be...could it? She was about to get her answer when Donnie asked another question.
"Mikey, how did you survive out here all this time?"
"By the guidance of the Great Pepperoni. That and I also had some help" he grinned.
Junior scoffed "Please you did most of the work, if it weren't for you I'm pretty Mom and I wouldn't be here right now"
"And I would have gone completely insane if it weren't for you two, so thank you too" he replied with a grin.
"What's with all the commotion?" a soft voice called out as they entered the room.
"Mom, Uncle Mikey brought guests" Junior said walking to her.
Everyone turned to look at the new person in the room and their eyes growing in disbelieve. There stood Skyler hair tied back in a high ponytail and now sporting some glasses. She looked the same just slightly older and a scar ran down her left eye to her shoulder. She was holding a bowl in her hands but she lost her grip on it when she saw them.
"Skyler is that you?" Kayla laughed running to her and embracing her in a tight hug.
"Kayla, you're alive" Skyler laughed hugging her back just as tightly. When they let go she hugged Donnie and shook hands with Mira. When she came up to Raph they both froze.
"Raphael? Is…is it really you?" her voice trembled and eyes teared up. Raph fell to his knees as more memories flashed through his head, this time, of his mate. His hands trembling as he lifted them up to cup her face gently almost afraid that she would disappear.
"Skyler…you're alive" he whispered unable to believe it. Skyler let out a sob but nodded and smiled, placing her hands over his and placing a kiss to the palm of his hand. Warmth spread from where her lips touched him, up his arm and through his whole body and he pulled her in and kissing her desperately. Showing her just how much he had missed her in the last fifty years. The part in himself that felt like something was missing filled as he held and kissed her in his arms.
"Uh…mom?" Junior raised a brow and crossed his arms over his chest. Skyler pulled back and she gave a sheep grin.
"I KNEW IT!" Kayla blurted out causing Skyler to blush.
Mikey laughed and placed a hand on Junior's shoulder shoving him towards Raph as his eyes widen at the news of Skyler being a mom "Raph, meet your son Logan Hamato or Junior as we like to call him cause he's like a mini you" Mikey teased.
"Son?!" everyone shouted in shock. Minus Mikey, Skyler and Kayla who was laughing and pointing at Raph's stunned face.
"Maybe we should sit down a-and explain," Sky motioned for them to sit in chairs "When you guys left to stop Newtralizer and Dregg, Kayla left Catharine and me in the lair—"
"You were suppose to stay in the lair" Mikey glared at Kayla while she smiled sheepily and stuck out her tongue childishly.
"Hey! I helped remember" she pointed out.
She remembered when the explosion happened only because remember waking up mid-fall. Even when she shift the winds around them to slow their fall, Raph had hit his head hard and Donnie had been hit by a large slab of concrete that had fallen from a building. It had crushed his shell and he was bleeding badly. She managed to wake Raph up but he was so confused as he helped her lift the slab of concrete while she pulled Donnie's body out. She need to get them to a safe place she figure she go back and check on Skyler and Catharine back at the lair. Donnie had been severely injured in the explosion and Raph had been carrying him but he seemed so confused and out of it. He only seem to be following her because of the fact that she seemed to know him. So, she had help them back to the lair hoping Sky was there to help heal the both. But by the time they reached their location the whole place was in shambles. Donnie's lab was the least effected by the destruction. Donnie hard began to become conscious just enough to instructed her on how to help him transfer his consciousness into Metalhead 2.0 while Raph sorted himself out. She was pretty sure he was suffering from a concussion and memory loss. While she waited for Donnie to finish uploading in his new body she had been carefully to search lair for any signs of Skyler and Catherine but found none. It looks like they managed to make it out safely at least she hoped they did. They grabbed whatever they could and loaded everything in the battle shell however they had to leave Donnie's body behind, he sustained too much damaged and by the time they found someone who could really help it would have been too late. When they got to a safe enough place Donnie was the one to patch them up of any serious injuries. Only then had they noticed that Raph had amnesia and could not recall anything before the blast. Over the past years they had helped him recover his memories little by little.
"You were still recovering!" Mikey snapped.
"Don't be too hard on her Mikey if it weren't for her help, I wouldn't be here today" Donnie added before turning to Skyler "What about Catharine? Have you seen or heard anything from her?" Donnie asked desperate to know where his mate was.
Mikey's face sadden and Skyler's eyes teared up as she held back tears "We don't know, she said she would find us but she hasn't…"
"No" Kayla shook her head and began to sob. She couldn't be dead. She couldn't be gone. She never got to say goodbye. This was a joke. Cat was probably just hiding somewhere then going to jump out and say surprise. She had to!
"She's alive she has to be!" Donnie whispered standing up and clutched his metal head, he faced away from them his antennas twitching in agitation "You're lying!" he turned and yelled at them angrily.
"I'm really sorry bro, we tried to take her with us but she wouldn't listen—"
"LIAR!" Yelled flipping over a table. Raph quickly stood up and subdued him "Let me go Raph"
"I…I think her b-bond broke" Sky whispered and he froze.
"Her…bond?" Donnie said in horror. Raph released him once he was sure he wouldn't throw anymore things.
Sky nodded "We felt the e-explosions and Cat said something was wrong, that you were f-fading so we left to find you. Hoping to meet you half way so Cat c-could keep you connected to her while I healed you but t-the tunnels began collapsing and we had to g-go a different route that's when we bumped into Mikey"
"She told us to leave her because you were dying, she said she would find us after we found and healed you. She pointed us in the right direction but after that we lost our way there was to much destruction going on in the city...we failed. We went back to find her but she was gone" Mikey said burying his face in the crook of Kayla's neck as she sat in his lap.
"Gone?" Donnie whimpered.
"Disappeared" Mikey clarified.
"Then she might still be alive" he muttered looking out the window. She had to still be alive. She was too stubborn not to be.
"I'm sorry D, we really tried" Mikey muttered looking down unable to look him in the eyes. Don fell to his metal knees devastated at their words.
"This...this is my fault" Donnie finally whispered.
"No, don't do this Donnie! It wasn't your fault" Kayla got out of Mikey's hold and grabbed Donnie by the shoulders.
"She's right you weren't even there with" Mira agreed.
"Exactly" Donnie shook his head "I should have been with her!" he snarled at them and Mira flinched.
"But you didn't, you're right here, this doesn't make sense" Mira said confused.
"It's complicated" Junior spoke up "You see my mom and her friends are Aeonian's. And when Aeonian's find their soul-urge they bond with them, connecting the two as one. If one is to dies the other follows. The pain is too great for them to handle" Junior explained. His mother had told him all about their heritage and that one day he would also find his soul-urge.
"What's a soul-urge?"
"It's like a soulmate"
"So…they die because of a broken heart? But then why is he here then? Shouldn't he be…oh the brain swap thing" Mira whispered.
"In simple terms, yes" Kayla nodded sadly.
"It's not fair!" Donnie shouted shrugging out of Kayla's hold. First he lost his body, then his friends and family and now his mate. He was a robot now he couldn't even cry for his possibly dead mate. He let out a heart piercing scream. They could feel his frustration, sorrow, pain and grief through that scream.
"Donnie, will look for her don't worry" Raph muttered in sympathy while placing a hand on his head. Donnie smacked it away and stood up and exited the shelter.
"Leave me alone..." he needed something to distract him. Raph and Mikey were quick to follow him but Skyler and Kayla blocked their ways with a shake of their heads.
"Give him some space" Kayla said.
"He needs time to process" Skyler agreed.
"Right…" Raph struggled on what to say before his mind went from one brother to another that was still missing with his mate "Mikey, what about Leo and Nia?" Raph whispered.
"They were the closest to the bomb. There's no way they could have survived that" Mikey shook his head sadly.
"You don't know that for sure" Kayla whispered.
"Kay, I want to believe that they're alive. Really, I do but I saw it with my own eyes, that blast consumed their whole body" Mikey whispered pulling her close.
"But her element is fire! It shouldn't have affected her!" Kayla insisted burying her face in his neck as tears continued to fall.
"You forget that the bomb was infused with mutagen, there's no telling what affects it could have done to her" Donnie stated sadly returning inside not even two second after he left. As much as he wanted to be alone right now he also wanted to hear what happened to his missing brother. But now, he wish he hadn't. Not only had lost his mate but also his brother and a dear friend.
"The Mutant Apocalypse isn't so bad. We're back together—"
"Not all of us" Donnie muttered bitterly.
"Not all of us" Kayla agreed "But you still have us Donnie and we'll be here for you no matter what and we'll keep looking for Cat" she stated and everyone agreed.
"Thanks guys" he said softly. With time he would be alright as long as he was with his family and friends. "Hey Raph? How does it feel being a father?" Donnie smiled weakly trying to change the topic. He need to focus on something else…anything.
Raph actually flushed red and he turned to Sky who was also blushing and he could only say one word "How?"
"I didn't k-know I was pregnant until 4 months after t-the blast" Sky admitted "I didn't notice the symptoms until Mikey and I w-were too busy trying to survive i-in the world and I started to show. I couldn't believe it a-at first, I didn't even think I would carry to full term c-considering the harsh conditions we were in, but Mikey did his best to p-protect us and always managed to provide whatever we needed. He even helped me through the birthing. Then he came across this p-place and we've been here ever since. He taught Logan to fight w-while I taught him to read and heal" She smiled towards Mikey thankfully towards him.
"You're amazing you know that right" Kayla said falling more in love with him as she heard what he did for her friend and his nephew.
"I know" he grinned.
"Mikey thank you for looking out for them" Raph bumped fists with him.
"No problema my dude, you did the same for me" Mikey smiled pulling Kayla closer to him.
Raph walked up to his son and placed his hands on his shoulders "I know I haven't been around but it isn't because I didn't want to—"
"I know" Junior cut him off in understandment.
"I'm proud of you for taking care of your mother in my absence but from this moment on I promise I'll be there for the both of you" Raph said softly.
"I know Dad" Junior smiled.
"Great and wise Chalupa. I do not mean to impose on your hospitality further, but—" Mira began before Mikey cut her off.
"Say nothing. I can sense a greater purpose has brought you here. You seek the secret to the perfect calzone, the kind that's evenly baked, but doesn't burn the roof of your mouth."
"No, Holy One. I'm seeking Oasis"
"That was my second guess" He grinned and Kayla smiled lovingly. He was still the same.
"I've had this since I was a child, but I can't understand it" Mira showed him her arm.
"By the Great Pepperoni in the sky, I created this map years ago, but I lost it, and now it's a cool tattoo."
"So, Oasis is real?" Raph asked.
No sooner than the words left Raph's mouth the wall exploded. The mutant badge from before with some new recruits entered the building laughing.
"Time to say good night, Turtles." The lizard mutant smirked.
"How did they find us so quickly?" Donnie stood up.
"We know your secret, girl. You've got the map to paradise" Rex pointed at her.
"Ice Cream Kitty!" Mikey called out and on que the frozen dessert mutant launched itself at the Lizard.
"Get it off!" he yelled.
"Come on!" Raph said running into the fight and everyone followed him.
"Grab the girls. Destroy the rest"
"Mira!" Kayla yelled as she witnessed her get hit in the back of the head and two men dragged her unconscious body. She lost her cool and wind whipped around her lifting her off the ground and her green eye began to glow. She threw blast of winds at the lizards and badgers. They stood no match for her.
"Forget the Aeonains! We have the girl for now!" Rex shout realizing if they stayed any longer the were sure to lose. Kayla was about to give chase when she fell to the ground. Mikey was quick to catch her. No one noticing as Raph slipped away and chased after Rex.
"You alright?"
"I'm fine, I just been using my energy a lot lately" she panted.
"Uhh…guys where's Raph?" Donnie said in wonder.
"That idiot went alone!" Kayla hissed.
"What's that sound?" Mikey looked up.
"Missile!" Junior shouted pointing out the window.
"Everyone get close to me. NOW!" Kayla shouted using the last bit of her energy. She clenched her teeth and created multiple layers of wind domes around them just in time as the missile struck and exploded around them. They were flung to different directions from the blast.
"Guys!" Kayla stood up coughing and looking around the smoke and dust. Had she failed in keeping the domes up long enough?
"I'm okay" Mikey grunted while next to him Ice Cream Kitty meowed.
"Me too" Donnie called out.
"Same" Junior said
"I'm a-alright as well" Skyler wheezed.
Chompy jumped out from underneath the sand and roared while wagging its tail showing them that he too was fine from the blast.
"We have to go find them"
"NO!" Raph growled as he watched the people he loved and cared about be destroyed before his eyes. He failed to protect them again. His eyes narrowed and all he saw red.
He just wanted revenge.
When he woke from his anger haze he looked down to see himself holding a key and opening a cage.
"Red Stripe, you're alive"
"Well, couldn't leave my favorite meerkat behind, could I?" he smiled sadly.
"Where are the others?" Mira asked and he shook his head.
Mira frowned and hugged him "Thank you, Raphael" the alarms began to go off and they both grimaced.
"Of course that had to happen" Raph rolled his eyes "Move Mira. Go, go, go, go" he shouted to her as they ran though the tunnels but were outnumbered and easily caught.
"Turtle, I should have known you weren't dead yet" Rex tsked.
"Take him to the pit" Imperius Reptilicus commanded. Rex kicked Raph unconscious and laughed as they dragged him away.
