79th Bite

Kai's body went missing from the basement. It took several weeks and by then they'd stopped checking in on it every day.

Bonnie, who had picked up the habit of locking the doors, hadn't anticipated the arrow through the kitchen window right to her chest, breaking through her collarbone.

Even without superior hearing, Damon would have heard her blood curdling scream from the library . He raced downstairs to see the arrow retract, her blood staining the razor sharp tip.

"Bonnie" he yelled, dropping to her side and biting his wrist to feed her blood. "Shit..."

It takes a while for bones to reset, even with something like vampire blood. Damon held her close to his chest. She was screaming and in so much pain and Damon didn't have to wonder about what it felt like. He wished he could carry that suffering instead.

Eventually, the screaming stopped. Her wounds had closed and so were her eyes. He takes her small body into his arms and kisses her forehead. It was damp with sweat. Carefully, he took her upstairs and into bed.

He stayed with her, listening to her heartbeat. As long as she was alive, Damon felt things would be okay. Words to live by.

He had to resist going after Kai and stabbing him to death with his own arrow. Now thought, he was sure that Kai wouldn't be dead for long anyway so what did he want? Why would he terrorize them and Bonnie especially?

He stayed in bed with her, he knew she'd need him once she woke up.

He thought once that he's seen his fare share grief and that he's been through the worst of it. And now Damon wasn't sure if anything in his life could have prepared him for seeing Bonnie so broken open. What happens to their promises when he couldn't fulfill them?

He pressed his lips to her forehead, her eyelids, and her cheeks. Peppering kisses wherever he could because now it was impossible to not to. Bonnie meant more to him now and damn it if he even tried to call it platonic.

"Da-mon," her voice shaky. Her body was trembling again. He pulled her onto him. He stoked her hair and her tear stained cheek. Her eyes cracked open, seeing Damon for the first time since that morning.

"I'll find him... I'll..."

She shook her head. She didn't want to think any harder than she had to.

"Don't."

Damon tried to get a better view of her face. Her voice was low and he wanted to match it to her expression. She resisted though. "Hey... hey... look at me..." she struggled against him more. "Bonnie, it's me. It's me, ok?" He kissed the corner on her mouth. It came again, the rumbling of desire inside of him.

She sighed and pressed her face into his big palm. Her heart swelled. She felt cherished and more than anything, she felt safe. Finally, she turned, allowing his lips to press on hers.

"Just today..." he whispered against her mouth. "Just once..."

She nodded. Just today. That sounded right. It sounded like enough. While thinking, just today, that they'll get it out of their systems and move on, Bonnie found herself underneath him. His full weight pressed between her legs.

She gasped, breaking out into a fever. She was scared and thrilled and if Damon hadn't slipped his tongue into her mouth maybe she would have said no. She surrendered.

She grabbed the back of his head, pulling at the short hairs at the nape of his neck. More. Blood rushed to her ears but she could still hear Damon groaning. He touched her all over as of his hands wished to be everywhere at once, as if they'd run out of time any minute now. But, time was all they really had.

They melted into each other. It was hot and wet and Damon reveled in the way her body arched up in his. It was Damon who raised his head and locked eyes with her. "If I don't stop now..."

She'd never been kissed like way before and suddenly considered if this kiss—his kiss—would haunt her forever.

"I know..." she breathed. "So stay here. Just be here."

Damon lied down next to her. Its only been a few weeks since they shared a bed but it felt like a lifetime ago. What were they doing, sleeping alone, when this was infinitely better. He kissed her forehead and slowing ran his fingers up and down her back, unknowingly sending shivers down her spine.

He wanted to say more but decided not to.

Bonnie couldn't remember exactly when she fell asleep. She remembered that they were together and that she was in his arms. She remembered their kiss. She pressed her fingertips on her lips. Her heart skipped a beat. What the hell was she going to do now?

She showered and got dressed, buying as much time as she could before facing him. She'd been hurt and maybe in the moments after they were both vulnerable.

She reached the chicken as Damon turned around to place a plate of pancakes on the tables. "Bennett"

"Salvatore..." Her cheeks warmed up. She sat down and stared at the pancake with a smile made of shipped cream.

Damon sat across from her and eyed her. "About yesterday..."

"Yesterday was.."

"Kai is going to come back eventually. We need a game plan."

It took Bonnie a minute to respond. A moment from the night before replayed in her head. Just today. Damon already gave themselves an out and'd already taken it.

"Right," she took a deep breath. "We should probably hear him out..." Damon gave her a look as if she was crazy. "We didn't listen the first few times and then he sent as arrow throw the window. We wont know how to move forward until we know what he wants. And if he's predictable, he'll try getting to me again."

Damon leaned back and hummed in agreement. "Fine. Whatever the lady wants."

She stabbed her plate with her fork. "The lady hates pancakes."

"Don't insult the vampcakes, Bon. They're good for you."

Bonnie relented and ate her breakfast. All Damon really wanted to do was watch her. Something had awoken and ballooned inside of him. It made his chest ache and his heart race. It had a language of its own. Damon smirked. Just once? Obvious lies should be banned from his lips.

"After breakfast, let me feed."

She rolled her eyes.

Yes.
