Chapter 24

Epiphany

Now, the next morning Anika woke up on the leather couch at her house in the arms of her raven haired friend. She wiped some saliva from her mouth praying to God that Vanitas didn't have any on him.

As she stirred, he began to shift, causing Anika's body to slip off the couch, and all she did was laugh as she hit the floor with a soft thud. "Ohmigod, Vani you practically pushed me off!"

He groggily looked at her, "fuck, sorry." He rubbed his sleepy eyes. "What time is it?"

Anika got on all fours and searched around in the morning light, "I'm not sure," she found her phone and pressed the home button, "It's 7:30."

Vanitas groaned and sat up slowly and looked at her on the floor, "It's way too early to be awake."

She smiled up at him, "Yeah, but since we're awake now, could you show me thing you wanted?"

"Hmm, I guess a deal is a deal." He stretched and grabbed his plaid shirt from the top of he couch, "I didn't mean to freeload here last night. I'm gonna need to change at home."

Anika scratched at her growing brown roots and shrugged, "No worries, I didn't mean to sleep on you." She stood and went to change, when she returned he saw Vanitas nibbling at an apple at the island.

He stopped mid-bite, "I got hungry."

"Go ahead! I am definitely not trying to starve you. Have whatever you'd like"

I smiled and continued eating, "I'll take you to lunch after I show you my surprise, and we can chat about your family."

"Since you didn't ask to go out for lunch, I will begrudgingly go with." She stated with a smile, and a playful glint in her eye.

After she ate some toast laden with butter and jelly, she got into his passenger seat and was quiet on the ride to his house.

As he got out he explained a few things about this 'secret'. He started off by stating some of his hobbies, he liked to build robots as a kid, and recently he got into making blueprints and building what he developed.

As they made their way into a spare room upstairs, Vanitas ran into a huge mahogany desk, shifting a few metal sheets and screws around the surface, "Oops, Uhm well I have been trying to make this thing, now it's somewhat based on a seismograph you know, but it helps determine how much time people have to evacuate when their's a tsunami, because I have a history with those, I don't know if Sora has told you, but you know, and then I think this would be really important for coastal cities, and with some finessing it wouldn't cost much to put these underground and connect the information wirelessly."

She listened to his ramblings, but made sure to be a good listener, he put faith in her by showing her his secret contraption, and all she could do while he spoke was smile and show her appreciation. Anika cared for Vanitas, and his invention was rather amazing, it could help a lot of people.

He looked at her, waiting for her to speak, and gasped as she wrapped her arms around him in a hug. "That is so amazing Vanitas! Do you have it hooked up to your laptop, like I'd love to see it working, you know you could set up a small prototype and then create a fake setup. You should totally enter the engineering program at the mainland University you're planning on going to."

His toothy smile was reflected in the excitement in her eyes, "You really think so?"

"Yes! Definitely! It seems like something you're passionate about, and I mean you can stay undecided, but from what can see, you would really enjoy doing this type of thing for the rest of your life."

Vanitas reciprocated her hug, "Thank you. I will have to contact the school then, uhm have you already applied?"

"Not yet."

"Apply tonight when you get home." He paused, "Now it's time for me to take you to lunch and hear your story."

"You're sly, now this is about me, when the day should be about you, figuring out a major is important, it took me forever to narrow my search to be a marine biologist."

He laughed, "Well, you can relax here while I change, kay? By the way, where do you want to eat?"

"Can we eat at the fresh fish shack down by the wharf?"

"Yeah, sure, it has been a loooong time since I went there. I miss that place."
