Chapter 23
"'Cause it's you and me
And all of the people with nothing to do
Nothing to lose
And it's you and me
And all of the other people
And I don't know why
I can't keep my eyes off of you."
~You and me by Lifehouse
Everything went well. After Patrick Sullivan recovered, he has been under the custody of BPD. He was interrogated. And luckily, he didn't give Jane and the others a hard time. He confessed on the killings and how he did it. From Lily down to Michael. Dana Sullivan, was found almost lifeless in an abandoned warehouse where Jane and Korsak were watching Patrick. She was so pale and so thin, she didn't eat enough food for the past days. He testified against her husband. She was so traumatized and could barely looked at her husband. They will finally give justice to the people killed by Patrick Sullivan especially to the young Lily.
Jane and Maura were in the Beacon Hill house one Saturday morning discussing their new arrangement. Maura invited Jane to live with her and Jane accepted it without second thought since she already practically live in Maura's house. And now, Maura is stressing out where to put Jane's stuff because she didn't consider that part when she asked Jane. On the other hand, Jane was watching Maura with amusement while she sits on the couch.
"Jane!" Maura turned to Jane who was currently smiling as she stopped pacing.
"What?" Jane exclaimed in amusement.
"Why are you just chilling out? I'm all stressed out."
"Well, if I join you in your thoughts, we will be both stressed out. That's not a good thing, isn't it?" Jane grinned. Maura huffed. "Come here." Jane pulled Maura to her lap. "Why are you stressing this out?"
"You're moving in here, Jane. And we haven't yet figured out our arrangement."
Jane chuckled and gave Maura a quick kiss on the doctor's neck. "It's not like I have so many things in my apartment, Maur. Some of my furniture will go to the donation pile and some for Frankie. And I only have few pair of slacks, blazer, and shirts. So no need be stressing out."
"Jane..."
"It'll be fine, Maur. Don't worry so much about it."
Maura looked down at Jane and there she found reassurance. She doesn't have to worry anymore.
And just like a light bulb something clicked in Maura's head. "I already know what to do. I'll put all the clothes I'm not wearing in donation pile."
"But Maura, you don't have to do that. I can put my things in the guest room."
"I know. But what I learned from you is sometimes we have to make sacrifices for our love ones. And still, I have lots of clothes anyway. And there's no way I'll let your things be put in the guest room since you will sleep in my room, permanently." Maura smiled and pointed at Jane's nose.
Jane held Maura's finger and kissed it. Slowly, she pulled the doctor and hugged her. "You learned that from me?"
"Yes, I witnessed all the sacrifices you made for your love ones all throughout our friendship. I was beyond amazed by that, you know."
"Really?"
"Yes. Especially the sacrifices you made for me. You are so selfless and you don't expect anything in return. You're the most amazing person I've ever met." Maura's eyes were shining with sincerity and Jane felt her heart swell. She didn't know she had that kind of impact to anyone. All she knew about herself is dedicated, sarcastic, and brash. But coming those words from Maura's lips made herself realized she was wrong after all. In a good way of wrong, anyway.
Jane couldn't respond from what Maura said. And since she's more of action. Slowly, she leaned in and captured her girlfriend's lips in a sweet kiss. Maura smiled at the kiss and gladly responded to it. They pulled away reluctantly when they needed to breathe. They pressed their foreheads together.
"That was sweet." Maura said, still smiling at Jane.
"You are sweet."
"I love you."
"I love you, too."
Silence.
Though that silence wasn't awkward, Maura was the first to break the silence. "So do you think my idea is okay?"
"Yes. Tomorrow we'll start living our lives."
"Together."
"Yes, together." Jane agreed. "But before that, I need to get going."
Maura frowned. "Where are you going? I thought we'll spend the rest of the weekend together?"
"I need to meet up with Dinah. I need to update her on the case. You know, so she'll get closure."
"I see. Do you want me to come with you?"
Jane shook her head. "No. I'll be fine. However, I will pick you up at six for our official date."
"Okay. But what should I wear?"
Jane knew Maura will ask that very question. "Just wear something casual. Like a t-shirt and sweatpants."
"Are you serious?"
"Real serious. I gotta go now. I'll see you later." Jane kissed Maura on the forehead before leaving the house with a huge smile on her face.
She found Dinah rummaging at the garbage near Boston Common again. She walked purposely towards Dinah to announce herself.
"It seems you don't know how to listen as well," Jane commented as she just looked at Dinah.
The other woman whipped her head and was met by the smiling Jane Rizzoli. "Well, old habits I guess."
"Here." Jane handed her the paper bag she brought. "Good thing I found you on time."
"Park?"
"Sure."
The headed to the park and sat on an empty bench. They found themselves like how they first met. Both are quiet, Jane watching the people pass by while Dinah busied herself on eating.
"He's already in jail and will rot in there for all the murders he committed." Jane was the first to speak.
"I'm glad he'll pay for what he did. No one deserves to die that way. Putting the law in your own hands, that's just so wrong." Dinah said.
"Agreed. Some people think they can do whatever they want." Jane sighed. "I'm still sorry Michael has to die."
Dinah shook her head. "If there's one thing I learned from everything is that everything happens for a reason. There's a reason why he died and maybe it's still not clear for now what that reason is. But I know one day we'll know."
Jane smiled. "I'm glad the cryptic Dinah is back. But yeah, I agree with you. Everything happens for a reason. There are reasons why we struggle sometimes."
"But know it will make you stronger once you get through it."
"Sometimes I wonder if you're friends with my mom."
"Hmm? Why is that?"
"Nothing just so much wisdom in words. Anyway, how are you holding up?"
"I'm fine. I will be okay. I'll get through it. And how are you doing Detective Rizzoli?" Dinah turned to Jane.
"Well, I can say I'm doing great. I finally Put an end to this investigation. Gave justice to those who died. Guess, I'll keep on living."
"I'm glad to hear. And how's the good doctor?"
The thought Maura made Jane smile unknowingly. "She's fine. Happy."
"Finally worked on the other angle and figured it out?"
"Yes. And we're both glad we did. I've never felt this happy."
"That's good."
"And we're actually going on our first date tonight." Normally, Jane would keep things private especially her private love life. But she felt at ease with Dinah so she shared the information with her. Dinah appeared to be intently listening to her.
"I heard there will be meteor showers tonight," Dinah said. Jane just smiled at her. "So what was your mother's name?"
"Angela. Angela Rizzoli."
Dinah just nodded.
"I need to get going. I need to prepare for tonight."
"Have fun Detective."
A smile crept up on Dinah's face when Jane left. It's not because she had a good talk with Jane or that Jane brought her food, or the killer of Michael Hanson was finally in jail. No. It's simply because she exactly knows who Angela Rizzoli is. Of course, she does. So Jane is her daughter.
Night has finally come. Jane made sure she arrived at Maura's door five minutes before six. And she did. She was met by a warm, bright smile when the door of Maura's house opened. Jane nearly lost her breath upon seeing her girlfriend. Girlfriend. It's still new but somehow music to Jane's ears. Maura was a sight to see with only wearing a white tee shirt and gray sweatpants just like what Jane instructed her to wear.
"Wow," Jane muttered.
Maura's smile widened upon seeing the look on Jane's face. "Like what you see?"
Jane cleared her throat as she looked up at Maura. "You're pretty. I mean you're always pretty but seeing you like this is just another story."
"You've seen me like this whenever we do jogging."
"I know, but you know that's before us happened," Jane explained.
"Agreed."
Jane revealed her hand from her back. On her hand are three tulips she picked for Maura. "For you." She handed Maura the flowers then kissed her on the forehead.
"Tulips. My favorite flowers." Maura smiled at Jane. Her heart swelling with happiness and giddiness.
"I pay attention."
"Good observation, Detective. Will you come in first? I'll just put these flowers in the vase."
"Sure thing."
After Maura did her thing, they finally went outside her house to go to where Jane planned their first date. Upon arriving at the vehicle, Maura frowned upon seeing a 4x4 car she never saw Jane drove before.
"Whose car is this?"
"A friend of Frankie's."
"Why do we need to ride this, Jane?"
"Because of where we're going. Don't worry, I'm sure you'll have fun."
Maura smiled. "I trust you, Jane. And I know I'll have wherever we go as long as I'm with you." Maura leaned in gave Jane a peck of kiss on the lips. "Let's go."
Maura noticed they entered the woods. She turned to Jane when she realized where they're going.
"Jane? Where exactly are we going?"
"You'll see, we're almost there."
"Aren't you really going to tell me?"
Jane looked at Maura and smiled. A while after, she cut off the engine. "We're here. But we need to walk a little to go where we exactly we're supposed to go, okay?"
"You're full of surprises tonight, Jane Rizzoli."
"I try." Jane got off the car and walked around to open the door for Maura. She will do anything for the doctor.
"So, where now?"
"Just follow me." Jane held Maura's hands and lead her to the right place.
When Jane stopped, Maura saw huge tent ahead of them. Mouth hanging open, she looked at Jane. Her eyes asking a lot of questions.
"I'm not sure if you know glamping but welcome to our last first date. Come on."
Jane led Maura to the tent and what Maura saw was really amazing. Inside was twin size mattress on a makeshift wooden floor. A blanket, two pillows and a cooler. Maura was beyond impressed by Jane's efforts. She surpassed all her previous lovers.
"Glamping?"
"Well, it's glamorous camping, you know. Put together, it's glamping." Jane shrugged. "I hope you like it."
Unexpectedly, Maura flung her arms on Jane's neck and hugged the detective tightly. "This is amazing, Jane. Thank you."
Jane smiled widely. Glad that she impressed Maura and made her happy. "Anything for you, Maur. Anything for you."
Maura extracted herself from Jane, cupped the detective's face and kissed her sweetly. After some minutes, Maura pulled from the kiss.
"Wow, I guess I really made you happy, huh?"
"You have no idea." The two shared a smile.
"So, let's go inside?"
Holding Jane's hand, Maura went inside with Jane in tow, crawling on top of the mattress. "This mattress is too soft."
"Well, I wouldn't want to be criticized by you for not putting the softest mattress, would I?" Jane grinned.
Maura playfully glared at Jane. "Well, you did good job, Detective."
Maura sat on the mattress and looked outside. She admired the night sky full of stars and moon. They are from the streets and Maura didn't mind. The peacefulness, and the quietness are too welcome for even just for one night in her life. As she continued to watch outside, Jane sat beside her. Maura looked at Jane and smiled.
"Thank you. Thank you for doing this to me," Maura said.
Jane returned the smile. "No problem. I wanted our first date to be memorable."
"So... last first date, huh?" Maura said after a while.
"Well, yes. Because I'm not planning on dating anyone after you or aside from you. You know, this dating game is not fun anymore. I don't know about you, but I know for myself, I won't." Jane said.
This earned a big smile from Maura. "I'm not planning on dating anyone, too, after you or aside from you."
"Good. But wait, I just want to add something."
"Hmm, what is it?"
"Maybe the reason why dating game is not fun anymore is because I finally landed on the right one."
They stared at each other, eyes communicating with smiles on their faces. Slowly they leaned in for a kiss. But before their lips touch, they saw shooting stars from the corner of their eyes. Their attention was diverted to the new object. There was awe in Maura's eyes while Jane just looked at her with a smile.
"Someone told me there will be meteor showers tonight. Go on, close your eyes and make a wish." Jane said.
Maura did. She closed her eyes to make a wish. Jane leaned in and kissed Maura on the forehead. She put her arm around Maura's face and rested her cheek on Maura's head and watched the shooting stars.
"I love you."
Maura opened her eyes and looked at Jane. "I love you, too."
Surely, their last first date is something to remember forever.
Next chapter will be the epilogue and it's short.
