"Come on Marinette, you have to go," Alya tugged on her arm, trying to drag her out of bed. Earlier that day Chloe handed out invites to the whole class for a New Years Eve party at her fathers hotel. Much of the class was reluctant to go given Chloe's reputation, but once she started throwing out threats everyone gave in and agreed to attend. And then there was Marinette, the girl who hated Chloe more than anyone. Even though she had told the mayor's daughter she would be there, she was having second thoughts about her decision.
Marinette pulled her arm back, throwing the sheets over her head. "I can't go Alya, I'll just make a fool of myself and that's just what Chloe wants," she protested. For as long as she had known Chloe, all she wanted was to ruin her life and a party with everyone there was the perfect opportunity. Especially if Adrien was going to be in attendance.
"I'm not going without you girl. You can't leave me alone with Chloe," she grabbed a pillow, smacking her friend in the head. There was no way Alya was going to spend an entire night alone, with Chloe presiding over the event. Not even Nino could stand up to that pain the way Marinette could. "Please Marinette," she pleaded.
She pushed the sheets off, shoving the pillow in her face with a loud groan. "I shouldn't have agreed to go. I should have gotten right in her face and told her no, a big fat no and dealt with the consequences," she threw the pillow off her bed, staring at the ceiling.
"Would you really want to do that though? She could ruin your life Marinette, your life!" Alya threw her arms in the air to emphasize just how much damage that girl could do. Chloe was a snake, poisoning hopes and dreams and squeezing people in her grasp until they give in to what she wanted. Alya climbed down the ladder, a determined look on her face as she dialed the only other person she knew who could help.
Marinette looked over the railing of her bed, watching her best friend pace the floor and scream into the phone. "What are you doing?" she raised a brow curiously. If there was one thing she knew about her best friend it was that she was persistent to no end, especially when it came to her friends.
"Calling for reinforcement," Alya hung up the phone, turning to Marinette. "Sorry girl, but you gave me no other choice," she declared, a confident grin plastered on her face. The look on her face said it all and it made Marinette's blood run cold.
The trapped door to Marinette's room flew open and some of their close friends entered. They looked around, expecting to see their friend somewhere slumping in a corner feeling bad for herself, but no such thing. Alya jabbed her thumb in the air toward the bed where Marinette was hiding behind the railing.
"Marinette, get down here," Alix called up to her. If there was one thing she knew, it was that sometimes people needed a bit of tough love. Some straightforward directions, no compromising. Her foot started tapping the floor impatiently as they waited, without much luck.
Mylene looked at Alix with a narrowed gaze. "That's not helpful Alix, you have to be nicer," she turned her gaze up to the bed where their friend was. Still. "Come on Marinette, we all want you to be at the party and so what if you mess up once or twice, we're still your friends," she tried to encourage her, even smiling for reassurance.
"That's not helping either," Rose said. "Please Marinette, none of us want to go to Chloe's party without you. It wouldn't be any fun and there's nothing to do here, the party will be a lot more fun! Lots of pretty decorations and balloons, food and punch!" Eventually she stopped talking when Juleka nudged her as she had gotten off topic.
The four girls started arguing amongst themselves over how to best handle the situation. Alix wanted to just drag her down the stairs, finding force to be the best route. Mylene and Rose agreed that being kind was best for their friend, but they couldn't decide how kind was too kind. Juleka tried to be mediator, taking all of their ideas and working out a compromise.
Alya groaned, pressing a palm to her forehead. This was her reinforcement? She wanted them to help her get Marinette to the party, not to debate over what method was best. They were getting nowhere, so it was up to Alya to take matters into her own hands. "Marinette Dupain-Chang, if you don't come down here this instant then I'll have no choice but to take away all of your pictures of Adrien," she threatened, knowing she had her right where she wanted her. "And, I'll tell Nino who will probably tell Adrien himself since he's so bad at keeping secrets."
Marinette almost threw herself over the railing, eyes wide with fear. "Anything but that, please!" she clasped her hands together, pleading with all her might. "These pictures are all I have," she whined, clinging to her pillow as if it were life preserver. Having finally been defeated, she clamored down the stairs, pillow clutched tightly to her chest.
"Now that you're finally back with the living, we can work on getting you ready for tonight," Alya said excitedly. "And you are going, no exceptions!" she stuck her pointer finger right in her face with a stern look in her eyes that said 'You're going or I will personally make you sorry'.
"But I don't even have anything to wear," Marinette held her pillow tighter. Despite being an aspiring fashion designer, she did own any dresses nor did she make any. She had plenty of sketches, but none of them had been turned into real designs.
"I'm sure we'll find something and if not, you can always design your own," Mylene encouraged. If there was one thing the girls knew, it was that they were going to find her something stunning to wear. And if not, there was always the option of making one herself.
The girls split up, searching the room top to bottom for a one of a kind, amazing dress. They pulled out boxes from the closet, sorting through the clothes that had been tossed into them carelessly. Alix opened one of the boxes tucked into the back corner, but quickly slid it back to where it was when she read the label; "Adrien Photos". They all knew about her big crush on Adrien, but it still came as a shock when they found an entire box dedicated to the blonde haired model.
Alya was going through a trunk in the corner of the room that had some of her old designs in them, but was only greeted by shirts and jeans. She dug deeper, hoping that there was something at the bottom, but it was only a failed purse design.
The girls searched for what seemed like forever, checking every box, every corner of the room. The only things they came across were shirts, jeans and jackets. There was the occasional pair of shorts and some tank tops, but they didn't find much else. No dresses, no skirts, nothing formal. For a fashion designer, Marinette was rather simple in what she wore.
"How's the search going girls?" Sabine asked, entering the room with a plate of fresh cookies. When she heard about the New Year's Eve party, she had hoped Marinette would attend, but she barely said a word when she got home from school. Being the good mother she was, she called Alya to try and convince her to go.
Alya sighed in defeat. "Not very good -Chang, we can't find anything for her to wear. She doesn't own any dresses," she informed her. The girls gave her a rundown of everywhere they looked, every place they had checked, only to turn up empty handed.
Sabine looked at her daughter quizzically. "What about that one dress you made last year. It was so beautiful. Where did you end up putting it?"
All eyes turned to Marinette. Of course she wouldn't tell them she had designed a dress, that would have been the key to making her to go to the party. It was easier to make them think she didn't have anything and that would make them give up. She would win and get to stay home. Luckily, Sabine was on their side.
"It's in my closet," she admitted, pulling the pillow tighter to hide her flustered face. She wished her mom hadn't said anything about the dress. All she wanted was to stay home and spend the night with her family and her kwami, but no, her mom had to be pushy.
"We searched your whole closet and didn't find a thing," Alix pointed out, having gone through all the boxes in her closet that contained clothes. Unless they missed a box. But they all remembered going through each one thoroughly, so they didn't miss anything. "If it's really in your closet, show us."
Marinette groaned, she hated when her friends pressured her. But this one was on her, so she owed it to them. She tossed her pillow on the floor, stepping over the mess of clothes that had been thrown around the floor. Reaching into the far corners of the closet, the pulled out the one box no one had touched. The one that said; "Adrien Photos".
"What?! That was it! I put it back, I didn't think anything was in there but photos!" Alix scoffed in dissatisfaction. Of course she would hide it in one of the most obvious places with a label that would throw anyone off no less.
"I didn't want anyone finding it, so I put in this box for safe keeping. And I knew no one would open it if I put this label on it," she smiled satisfactorily. If there was one thing she knew, it was that if anything had Adrien's name on it, no one would touch it. Especially since they all knew about her little, okay big, crush on the guy.
Hesitantly, she set the box down and took the lid off. Carefully, she lifted the dress from the box, holding it up to show them. Silence. No one said a word, they all stared at it as if they were in a trance. Marinette quickly stuffed it back into its box, not meeting anyones eyes. "I knew it, you all hate it. I shouldn't have told you guys about it, I'm not going to the party."
"No, no, we love it. It's beautiful Marinette, we were all just amazed by it that there were literally no words," Alya said soothingly. She didn't her best friend feeling bad about something she made, especially something so beautiful. "Come on girl, we'll all help you get ready for tonight," she promised.
Marinette wiped away a few tears that had managed to escape and trickle down her cheeks. She handed the box to Alya, a smile creeping onto her lips. "Alright, let's do this."
Marinette and the girls arrived at the Le Grand Paris. It had been a long afternoon preparing for the party. After finding the dress hidden in the closet, they helped each other get ready for the event. Dresses were delivered from each of their homes so they could stay at Marinette's house and a box of make-up was dropped off, thanks to Alya's mom.
"Alright, we're going to go in there and have a great time," Alya declared, ready to party. "And no matter what Chloe says, we all look amazing." They all knew it was going to happen at least once during the night. Chloe would approach them and degrade their outfit like she did every chance she could at school. But this time was different because not only were they prepared, they knew they looked great despite whatever she would throw at them.
As soon as they stepped foot into the hotel, Rose dragged Juleka to the desert table where an array of sweets were laid out on silver platters. Mylene headed off in search of Ivan, who was waiting for her by the punch bowl, a cup already filled with the fruity beverage. Kim swept in and grabbed Alix, despite her protests and forced her into a dance competition. Typical of them to always be competing with each other over the smallest of things.
"Come on, the guys are waiting for us," Alya grabbed her best friend, leading her through the crowd of people. As they got closer to the back of the room, Marinette spotted the oh so familiar head of blonde hair. Part of her wanted to run away so he wouldn't see her, but part of her really wanted to spend the night with him as it was New Years Eve.
Alya let go of her friends wrist once they reached the guys. "Finally, it took us like forever to find you guys," she straightened her dress, giving them a welcoming smile. "So, you guys liking it so far?" she asked. Seeing that they had been at the hotel since her and Marinette arrived, she wondered how much of the party they had taken in.
"Yeah, it's cool and all, but the music is terrible," Nino argued, pointing at the DJ who was playing some mixes that seemed to be complied of songs Chloe picked. Of course, that was to be expected as it was her party, in her hotel that her father owned.
"Why don't you go do something about it then," Alya suggested, motioning for him to move somewhere else. He gave her a puzzled look, unsure of what she meant. They were having a good time with Adrien and Marinette weren't they? Alya groaned when he didn't move. She grabbed his arm, dragging him away from the two. "We'll be right back," she said, pulling her complaining boyfriend along.
Marinette looked up at Adrien, her gaze quickly falling to the floor as she felt she would get lost in his eyes. He just looked so perfect, especially tonight. The black suit he was wearing accentuated his toned body and the green tie made his eyes pop. If the suit wasn't making her melt already, his slicked back hair sure did. He felt like she would turn into a puddle on the ground if she stared at him any longer.
"It sure was nice of Chloe to throw this party, huh?" Adrien gave her a half grin. He knew sometimes Chloe could be a bit of a pain and she didn't always treat others kindly, but he knew she was capable of doing nice things. Like the New Years Eve party she was throwing tonight.
"Y-yeah, I-I'm glad you were able to make it," Marinette smiled, wondering how much of a fool she had already made of herself. Here she was, in the presence of Adrien Agreste, the guy she had a massive crush on and she felt like she couldn't speak. Was it the party? Was it because they were in Chloe's domain? No, it was definitely the suit.
Adrien scratched the back of his neck nervously, wondering what else to say to her. "I like your dress," he complimented. It was a beautiful royal blue ball gown dress with a sweetheart neckline, beaded bodice and off the shoulder straps. The shoes were light blue ankle-strap heels that complimented the dress very well. And her hair had been done up into a loose bun, the side pieces curled to perfectly frame her face and atop her head was a rhinestone headband.
Marinette flushed read. Adrien complimented her on her dress. It was like a dream come true. "T-thank you, I made it myself," she admitted, feeling as if she should be ashamed for some reason for saying it was her creation.
"Well, I think it's beautiful," he smiled. Just as he was about to ask her to dance, Chloe bounced over to where they were, a cheery expression on her face. "Adrikins, there you are," she grabbed his arm, pulling him closer to her. "Come on, let's dance," she headed to the dance floor, giving Marinette a sly grin as if to say she won.
Alya came up beside her friend, arms crossed in disgust. "There she goes again, making everyone do what she wants," she sighed, patting her friend on the back. "Don't worry about it, let's just have some fun, that's what we came to do, right?" she encouraged, motioning to where their friends were waiting for them.
Marinette smiled, knowing she was right. It was New Years Eve, she should be having fun, not miserable all night. "You're right Alya, let's have some fun," she grabbed her best friend's hand and the two of them raced to where their friends were waiting for them.
The night was filled with dancing, laughing and drinking. Punch was served all night long and the deserts seemed to be refilled every ten minutes with how popular they seemed to be. The girls danced and talked, having a great time despite Chloe's annoyances every once in a while. Adrien talked to Marinette a few times, but once Chloe spotted them, she was all over Adrien like a fly.
"Ten seconds to midnight!" Someone called out, pointing to the large clock on the wall. Everyone gathered around the clock, anxiously awaiting for it to hit midnight. Couples held close to each other so they could share the New Years kiss and friends gathered in groups to set off poppers together.
"TEN"
"I don't think Adrien's going to be able to make it, Chloe's hogged him for herself," Marinette sighed. She had hoped he would be able to celebrate the incoming year with them, but it seemed that Chloe didn't want him to leave her sights.
"NINE"
Adrien looked through the crowd for his friends. He could see Nino's ball cap, but they seemed so far away from where he was. If only Chloe didn't have such a tight grip on his arm, he would be over with his friends celebrating the new year.
"EIGHT"
"Are you really thinking about them?" Chloe scoffed, leaning her head on his arm. "Don't you want to bring in the near year with me?" she batted her eyes innocently, hoping he would stay with her. This time she would get her kiss from Adrien and ruin Marinette's dream.
"SEVEN"
Adrien glanced at her, then back in the crowd at his friends. "As nice as that sounds, I'd really like to be with my friends. No offense, but I don't want to kiss you," he said, knowing exactly what her intentions were. If there was one thing he didn't want, it was to have a kiss with Chloe. She may be nice...sometimes, but he definitely did not have any feelings for her, no matter what she said.
"SIX"
Chloe crossed her arms, anger burning in her eyes. What did he see in those losers anyway? They were a bunch of nobodies that didn't deserve his time, unlike her. She looked up at Adrien, following his gaze. No, he wasn't just looking at his stupid group of friends, he was looking at Dupain-Chang in that hideous dress.
"FIVE"
"You're not seriously thinking about going over there, are you Adrikins?" Chloe asked, hoping to convince him to stay with her. She grabbed his arm, looking at him like a lost puppy dog. All she had to do was make him stay for a few more seconds, then she would get what she wanted.
"FOUR"
Adrien pulled away from Chloe. "Sorry Chloe, but this time I'm doing what I want. I'm not letting someone else dictate what I can and can't do," he declared, making his way through the crowd. He only had a few seconds, just a few more. He had to make it, it wouldn't be right if it were after midnight.
"THREE"
"Adrien! Get back here!" Chloe stamped her foot on the ground. How could he, how could he betray her like that. She thought they were friends and here he was going for a group of people that were beneath her. Beneath them!
"TWO"
Adrien ignored Chloe, pushing through people to get to his friends. To get to her. In his mind he had always worshiped one person, thought of them like they were the world. And then she comes in, wearing a dress that makes him see her in a whole new light. He thought about it all night, unable to take his eyes off of her. Her figure dancing with friends, the contagious laugh of hers radiating through the hotel. And all he wanted was to be closer to her.
"ONE"
Alya tapped her shoulder, pointing to where Adrien was coming through the crowd. Marinette was shocked to see him. She had thought Chloe had swept him away and she wouldn't see him until the new year. She wanted to ask where he had been. She wanted to know how he had gotten away from Chloe. She wanted to know why he had come back after being away from them all night.
But she wasn't able to get any of her questions out. Before she could even begin to comprehend what was happening, she felt his lips on hers. Warmth spread through her body and she felt as if she were going to go numb. Her arms wrapped loosely around his neck and she could feel his hands against her waist.
It felt like the world around them had stopped and it was just the two of them. Adrien rested his forehead against hers, both of their cheeks flushed. Their friends were staring, shocked at the suddenness of this new turn of events. Chloe was going to be so mad when she found out, but they were just happy the two finally figured things out.
"Happy New Year Marinette."
Happy New Year! Here's to a miraculous 2019!
To anyone who may ask, I know I didn't describe any of the other dresses/suits. There were two reasons for that;
1. it would have made the story much longer than it already was.
2. no one wants to read that many descriptions of just outfits, so I left it open to your imaginations and only designed our two main characters.
