A/N: A lot of people wanted to see my interpretations of the dialogue with Morgan and Lucina, so we'll start here.
Out of everything Robin had experienced, from blinding headaches to giving birth to seeing her comrades almost die more times than she could count, nothing had stopped her heart more than seeing just how close that Assassin was to murdering Chrom. Fear and rage had warred within her and she wanted to rush over there and save him, but she knew she was too far away to actually be of any help. For a few brief moments, she was sure that her husband was about to die and she felt the rage build within her.
Then 'Marth' shouted "father" and Robin was sure she has passed out somewhere and was dreaming. 'Father'. Marth had called Chrom father. She hadn't been the only one who heard it, as Frederick nearly fell off his horse at the admission and Lissa tripped over her axe. Clearly she was still awake and had certainly heard Marth call Chrom "father". But that just opened up a whole new realm of questions that she needed answers to.
They would have to wait until the battle was over, but as she was fighting, Robin couldn't shake the feeling that their world was going to be turned upside down.
Lucina had faced many battles, many challenges, and so many difficulties that she grew up long before she was ready. She never had a chance to be a child, thrust into a world not of her choosing at a young age. She had stared death in the face before, but nothing scared her more than having to face her father without a mask. It was easy to talk with him when he had no clue who she was, but she felt so…exposed like this. She had so much she wanted to say, rehearsed time and time again for the moment she would meet him, yet the words wouldn't come out. There were stuck on her tongue, all jumbled together in a mess that wouldn't sound right if she tried to say it.
"I…don't even know where to begin." To be honest, this wasn't how she wanted the truth to come out. But her father had been so close to death and all she could think about was how she didn't want to see her father die in front of her again. But how does she explain everything she had gone through up to this moment? Even to her own ears it sounded ridiculous.
"I already know you're not 'Marth', though I've nothing better to call you... But I'll ask nothing of you that you don't wish to reveal. Whoever you are, Ylisse owes you a debt beyond repaying." He was still in shock over what happened: he almost lost his life. He would've died and left his wife and daughter alone. All his friends, his family…gone in an instant. Whoever they were, he owed this person his life.
"Thank you, but…I think I would prefer you know the truth." She'd been so fearful, so very afraid that she was going to lose her father a second time. All the grief and pain from before came back full force and she attacked. She didn't even know what had happened until the battle was won. Had her father died then and there and Lucina was unable to prevent another tragedy, she would've lost it.
"As you wish." He wasn't going to lie to himself; since their first meeting, he was very curious about this stranger. They went by the name Marth and had a peculiar fighting stance, but there was something…peculiar about the stranger. He didn't sense anything malicious, but there was just something off about them.
"Here…look closely, and all will be made clear." The only way she could prove what she was about to say was truth was through her eye. All her life she'd been told her eye held a legacy, and she believed it. It was through this legacy that she could finally tell it all.
She lifted her head and stared into her father's eyes.
Chrom almost asked what she was doing but then he saw one of her eyes glint. He almost couldn't believe it, but there was no way someone could fake something like this. "That's the Brand of the Exalt." Chrom had seen that mark two times before. The first was on his father's back, and the second was in his daughter's eye.
"Lucina…"
And that explained the sword and the fighting stance; she'd learned them from him. Even her clothes were similar, the same color scheme as his own wardrobe. Now it all made sense why the stranger seemed so familiar. Only direct blood from the royal family would show signs of the exalt. And the Falchion…the only way one received the Falchion was if the predecessor passed on. Which meant that…
"You deserved better from me than one sword and a world of troubles. I'm sorry." What horrors had Lucina seen? What world did she come from where he left her alone? And if she was here now, had she just stopped him from dying early and leaving her and Robin? Had this been the moment he perished? "I'm so sorry Lucina."
He hadn't expected Lucina's eyes to water, nor her expression to pinch the way it did. He thought maybe he had offended her somehow or made her angry, but it dawned on him that she was crying. He was almost caught off guard when she ran into his arms and sobbed.
"Oh, Father! Father…"
How she longed to be with her father again…it felt unreal.
Robin saw 'Marth' and Chrom hugging, but she knew better than to just assume Chrom was being unfaithful. Chrom was friendly to everyone and many members of their army had a tendency to be overly affectionate, something that Chrom didn't mind. But it didn't quell Robin's curiosity. There was something going on here, and she needed to know what. Why exactly had that 'Marth' character called Chrom father? Had he sired a child before they were married? No, that would be impossible. Chrom had to be around the same age as her, maybe a year or two older and that couldn't be too old in the first place. 'Marth' looked like an adult, a little younger than the two of them. Chrom at the very least would've been a child had he sired them. But none of that made any sense.
What was going on?
The moment Chrom held Lucina for the first time, sitting beside Robin in their room while the infant slept, he wanted nothing more than to keep her in his arms and keep her safe. She was his daughter and the need to protect her from anyone and anything rose within him like nothing he'd felt before. Holding her as an adult was different, but he still felt that protectiveness rising in him once again; he wanted to protect this version of his daughter just as much as he wanted to protect his infant. She needed him, whether to listen or to just be there didn't matter but she needed him. He didn't know what else she wanted to tell him, if there was indeed more, but he didn't care. The moment he recognized the brand was the moment he wanted to make things right with her, whatever it may be. "Better, Lucina?"
Lucina pulled out of his arms and wiped her eyes. "Yes. Father... I'm sorry. It just all rushed back at once." She didn't remember how her father's hugs felt; it had been so long since she'd been in the comfort of anyone's arms. Her world was war-torn and there was little time for comfort or affection. Lucina grew up too fast to know what a hug even felt like. It had been just that long, and she couldn't afford the time to comfort herself or anyone else.
Chrom didn't know what "all" could've been but he'd ask later. Right now, it was clear that she needed him, needed to be held. He didn't know what kind of kingdom he left behind for her but it wasn't a good one. Did he die and leave a war for her to fight behind?
And…just hearing the word 'father' twisted him up inside, made his heart skip a beat. His baby Lucina could only coo and gurgle at her current age, not talk. Yet here he was, hearing it from his adult daughter. This was not how he pictured hearing it for the first time, but it didn't matter. It just felt right. "Father..."
It felt the same as when Robin called him any sort of endearment. His heart soared and he wanted nothing more than to hear it again and again and again.
"Should I call you something else?" Lucina worried her lip slightly, the motion so similar to when Robin did it that it made him pause. Now that he was looking at her, the similarities between Robin and Lucina were startling. They weren't as obvious as the features she inherited from Chrom, but looking at her this close, he could definitely see them, like the slop of her nose and the shape of her eyes. There were other little touches he noticed, but seeing what his and Robin's daughter would grow into made him proud. And being called 'father'…
"No, it's just strange to my ear." Strange, but not unwelcome. "...I like it."
Lucina chuckled. "...Father! Heh heh..." It sounded strange coming from Lucina as well. She didn't use that term very often and didn't think she ever would. Now that she was saying it, she didn't think she would stop saying it.
"Hah! Yes, it will take some getting used to!" It was going to be a while before his Lucina would talk, so hearing 'father' so soon was a bit strange. But he could definitely get used to it for her.
Lucina sniffled again, giving Chrom another hug. How many times had she wished she could do this? How many times had she wished she cold be with her parents once again? She didn't have a parent to hold when nightmares struck. She never had someone to hold when she was grieving. She hadn't held anyone since she was a child. It felt nice to be…warm for once in her life.
Alright, this was going on long enough. Some of the others were asking questions and wondering why Chrom had been gone so long. Not that Robin was worried; of course she trusted her husband, but maybe some clarification would be nice. "I'm sorry—Chrom?"
Chrom pulled away from Lucina for a moment. He had almost forgotten where he was and what had been going on. "Hmm? Oh, Robin. What is it?"
"It's just that... You two are out here alone, and Marth is...crying. This is how ill rumors are born." Some of the warriors in their company had a habit of gossiping and if they witnessed something like this, their camp would be alive with talk that might not even be true. "I trust you, Chrom, but is there a reason you and Marth need to be alone?" Was there a disagreement between the two that led to this? It was the only plausible conclusion she could draw.
Chrom looked at Lucina and gestured to Robin. "Can we tell her, Lucina?" Now that he knew the truth, he was eager to tell his wife as well. He knew that she'd love to see the woman their daughter had grown to become. But it seemed that Lucina had much more to tell them, and it was ultimately Lucina's decision on whether or not Robin could know.
"Of course." Lucina didn't even hesitate. Even after what happened, she still wanted to get to know her mother. Before everything went south. She didn't know this version of her mother, and she was glad she traveled far enough path that she could meet her. Lucina had little memory of her father and only the worst memories of her mother. She'd like to know the woman who gave birth to her as something other than a monster.
"Lucina?!" As in, their daughter Lucina? Their infant daughter Lucina? Their daughter back at the castle with a wet nurse Lucina? If this was someone's idea of a prank, it wasn't funny. She thought Lissa was the one who liked pulling pranks, not Chrom. "Chrom, Lucina is the name of our baby. I thought this stranger was named Marth."
"Robin, this is going to come as a shock, but... I'll just say it: This is our daughter."
It took a few seconds for Robin to fully process that statement. "...What?! Have you gone mad?!" They just had a baby! There was no way Lucina had gone from an infant to a woman over the course of a few days. It wasn't possible unless some kind of magic had been done on her, and she hoped to Naga that no one did any magic on her baby or else someone would pay.
Lucina took a couple steps closer to Robin, feeling more nervous at this moment than any before. She'd faced her mother before, but not in this form. Not when her eyes were warm and bright and she radiated serenity. Not when she looked soft and human. Lucina wasn't even sure if this was her mother; she looked so much different than from the woman she knew from her time that she was convinced her father had married a completely different woman. The form was the same but the personality and aura weren't. It was like there was no trace of the monster inside of her. "It's true Robin. Please, look closely. Prove it with your own eyes by looking into mine."
One of the brands she was born with would prove everything. The other brand…it would prove something that would lead to questions she didn't want to think about answering. For now, she'd focus on the brand that was a blessing rather than a curse.
Robin didn't have to look for long. The Brand had shone in Lucina's eye while they were talking but it was even more visible now. "You have the Brand!" It was just like when she looked at her daughter when she had been born. The Brand of the Exalt, clear as day.
Chrom nodded. "The same Brand carried by all House Ylisse's bloodline."
Robin was still in a bit of shock. The Brand was there, she was staring right at it. Chrom had explained it before, that all of the children of the House had the mark on a part of their body that signified their status, that it was impossible to falsify and that the placement of the Brand was never in the same place on the family. Yet Lucina had it in the exact same place as their newborn.
"Do you see now?"
Something about this just didn't add up. "...No, no I can't say that I do. If this is Lucina, what has befallen our baby back at the palace?" Had she disappeared? Or had Robin's fears been realized and someone did perform magic on their baby? She had so many more questions now!
"Nothing. She's fine," Chrom answered, placing a hand on his wife's shoulder to calm her. He was still a bit shocked by the revelation himself but he didn't want Robin passing out from overthinking it or stressing about it.
"Your baby is right where you left her, and perfectly safe. I am her from another time. From a time that is yet to be." A time she hoped she could prevent.
"You mean...the future?"
"Yes, more than 10 years hence. After history takes a dark and most destructive turn..." If she could save this time from all the death she witnessed in her own, she would be at peace. She couldn't just let Grima survive and make more people suffer. It she could stop the awakening here and now, maybe she could finally rest.
"But why? What happens in the future?"
"The fell dragon, Grima, is resurrected. His roar is a death knell for man, a scream that silences all hope…Death everywhere…" Countless bodies, injuries everywhere, destruction as far as the eye could see, faces blurring in and out, families crying out in grief over their lost loved ones…she still couldn't sleep right without seeing dead bodies all around her.
"Chrom? Our whole company? All of us? Dead?!" She thought Grima had been long dead, but what could've resurrected him? Could he be stopped now?
"…Yes." She had only heard stories of her father's company. Brave men and women who served her father dutifully, some of which had helped raise her, people who swore their lives to Ylisse and pledged to fight Grima and protect their home.
And who died trying, leaving a broken kingdom behind.
"…I…I don't know what to say." She couldn't believe it. She didn't want to believe it. The whole company…dead. But when she looked at Lucina, she could see the slightly haunted look in her eyes, a look she was to hide from them. That look told Robin more than enough, that Lucina had witnessed too much and it weighed on her mind.
"A tale that beggars belief, and yet the truth of it stands before us. She carries Falchion, my same sword. And the same sword the first exalt used to defeat Grima long ago." There was only one Falchion in Ylisse, one that was passed down through the family. Just as his father once inherited it from his father, Chrom had inherited it from his father. So would Lucina once Chrom retired, though this Lucina already possessed it. And thinking about the way Lucina could wield it so masterfully made Chrom certain that Lucina was telling the truth.
Lucina remembered the day she got the blade. It was wrapped in a blood-soaked cape, the fabric so drenched in blood that it was barely holding together. A tearful servant brought the blade before the court, solemnly giving it to Lucina. No one spoke when the bundle was handed to her and Lucina had started crying even before she pulled the fabric away. Wrapped in the bloody cape of her father was the Falchion, the same weapon her father had wielded so beautifully. "Your blade and mine are one Father. It was…It was all I had left of you."
"There is only one Falchion, Robin. I believe her."
"Yeah, and so do I!"
The voice surprised all three of them, causing them all to jump. They hadn't even realized anyone was listening in, so wrapped up in uncovering all these secrets. But it was only Lissa, who had probably come to check on Robin and her brother. "Heck, I saw her COME from the future! She fell right out of the sky! I've never seen anything like it."
Lucina smiled. Lissa was the only relative that had survived longer than most of the company. Her aunt had always tried to stay upbeat, even when times became hard. And she always told Lucina stories of her parents, just so she'd have something to hold onto. "Thank you, Aunt Lissa."
Her smiled faded. She came here with a purpose and she'd do anything to make sure this future was safe. "Naga, the divine dragon, feared mankind would face Grima again. In preparation for that day, she devised a ritual. It allows one to return to the past and alter events already written. I made the journey together with others, but...we became separated." Her friends were out there, lost somewhere. She didn't even know if they were in the same timeline as her. All she knew was that they started the journey together but she didn't know if any of them even completed the journey,
"Don't worry, Lucina. If they're out there, we'll find 'em!" Lissa, as optimistic as ever, gave Lucina a smile. "I'll tell the others we're on a hunt for missing children! Maybe they're in areas we've already visited and we need to backtrack."
"That sounds plausible. But who truly knows?" Robin didn't care where they had to look or what they had to do. All she was concerned with was making sure Lucina's trip here was not in vain. They needed to prevent Grima from wreaking havoc on their world. She'd help her daughter no matter what.
Her…her daughter.
"My daughter…" She was looking at her daughter. Their daughter. Lucina was their daughter. It was unbelievable and yet she was staring at the proof. Their daughter...
"Yes Robin. Your daughter. I'm…your daughter." To think in another timeline, Lucina denied all relation to this woman. In this timeline, she'd say it as many times as Robin needed to hear it. Because she knew that right now, this woman and the monster she knew were separate people. Lucina hoped to keep it that way.
"You have grown into such a strong and beautiful woman... Chrom and I are truly blessed." The way she wielded the blade and had a natural aura of authority around her. She was proud, strong, and had an honest nature, everything Robin wanted her daughter would be. Robin could've shed a tear; Lucina grew into such a beautiful woman.
"Thank you…milady." Lucina didn't know what to do or say. She was both elated and nervous. This was not the version of her mother she thought she'd see. The last she saw her mother…she hadn't been looking at a human. She didn't know what she was looking at, but it wasn't her mother, nor was it something she'd ever refer to as a mother. That, that thing that had taunted her, mocked her, and killed people before her wasn't a mother. Yet this woman in front of her was nothing like that. Lucina couldn't detect a hint of that evil. All she saw was that kindness and love…
"Will you not call me Mother?" Did she and Lucina have a bad relationship before she died? Had Robin done something to betray Lucina's trust? O-Or had she died before Lucina could actually call her "mother"?
"I...thought you might mind." The last time she called her something other than 'beast' 'monster' 'demon' or any other harsh term was…she didn't know. When had she actually uttered the words "Mother"? Naga above, it was probably when she was an infant!
"Of course not! I love you with all my heart!" Regardless of the age, it was still Lucina. It was still her precious baby girl, whether an infant or a woman. It'd be wrong of her to not love Lucina just because she was from the future or an adult. She was still staring at her daughter, and what a daughter she was.
Lucina wiped her eyes, trying to stop the tears even though they kept coming. "Oh Mother…"
She never thought she'd get an actual hug from her mother before, too young to actually remember what it felt like, but being hugged right now, being in her mother's arms, was one of the greatest feelings in the world. She never wanted to let go, never wanted to be without her mother again. She didn't have the chance to get to know her mother like she did her father; all her memories were faded and reduced to nearly nothing. But now, being able to hold her mother like this, all she wanted was to savor this memory.
"You are the finest daughter a woman could hope for Lucina."
"Mother…Oh, I've missed you more than you'll ever know."
"Something on your mind dearest?"
Damn. Robin thought Chrom had fallen asleep a long time ago, but he was either troubled by the day's events and that kept him up or he was watching her sleep again. Regardless of which one it was, he probably heard her mind working overtime while she tried to sleep.
Robin turned in Chrom's arms until she was facing him, trying to commit his face to memory. To think she'd been so close to losing him today. Had their daughter not been there, Chrom could've died and Robin would've been too late to stop it. She didn't know what she would do if she lost Chrom. She wasn't sure she could lead their company nor their kingdom without him. She wasn't sure if she would be able to live without him. She didn't remember her life before him and she knew it wouldn't be the same without him. "I could've lost you today…"
She felt Chrom tighten his grip on her. "I know. Had it not been for Lucina's intervention, I might've perished." He'd been thinking about that since the battle was over. He had such a close brush with death today, almost leaving Robin and Lucina to clean up his kingdom and once again fight in his battles. "I would've lost everything today. I'm grateful Lucina was here for us."
That was the other thing she was worried about. She knew Lucina told them they had enough time to stop Grima, but what if Lucina coming back changed something? And what of her friends? Would they even be able to find them? Where would they even begin to search?
"That's the other thing. I've been thinking about what Lucina told us. There's so much more going on than we thought. A war was our primary concern but we have to worry about Grima as well. I…I'm scared Chrom." She was supposed to be their fearless tactician, the one who planned for everything.
Chrom, bless him, pressed his lips against her forehead. "I know my love," he whispered. "I know."
"What if we fail again?" What if history was doomed to repeat itself? "What if Lucina's trip here was in vain? What if she witnesses us dying again? What if-"
"Robin." Chrom lifted her chin, rubbing his thumb across her cheek. The motion soothed her and she felt herself calming down little by little. "Lucina told us that the ritual she used would allow her to make changes to past events. And from the sound of it, we have the time to correct thing. We can do this. And we will stop Grima, before he can bring a terrible future to this world."
The way he spoke, so confidently and with such bravery, it made Robin believe him. If Chrom said they could do it, she trusted him. They would stop Grima and protect Lucina's future. Chrom believed it ad Robin did too. Of course there would be some uncertainties but they could face them together.
"Thank you Chrom."
A/N: I have been playing a lot of Fire Emblem Heroes and got back into Awakening and Fates (I have all three versions) so I've been sucked back in. I also have Smash Ultimate and main Lucina and Corrin so that helped me get back into this. You guys can vote on what comes next.
1) Lucina talking with her parents (so her supports with Chrom and Robin)
2) Lucina witnessing her parents interacting with one another and reflecting on the present version of them compared to her version of them
OR
3) Finding Morgan and Lucina talking with him (Her support with him and some of my own ideas)
Thank you guys for sticking with me even though it's been so long between updates.
