Chapter 38 Unexpected reactions

Ruby grabbed her wand, sent a hurried Patronus to Kyle and then ran to Umbridge's room. The Prison guard was dozing off but started when he heard Ruby's steps.

"What is it?"

"She's stopped breathing." Ruby replied, pushing the door open and checking the monitoring equipment around Umbridge, it was all working accurately.

"Thank Merlin, I can get…what are you doing?" Ruby fired the red resuscitation spell and the guard gaped at her.

"I have to try."

"Why? She's a fucking Psycho!"

"I still have to try." Ruby hated how much she hated what she was doing.

Kyle arrived within five minutes, out of breath and in his pyjamas.

"How long?"

"Six minutes."

"Did she deteriorate?"

"No, I gave her an F2 for a headache about an hour ago."

"Was she drowsy?"

"No, she was talking to me, as evil as usual."

"Tell her to take that spell off, let her go!" The guard roared, pointing at Ruby.

"We can't do that. We have to try and preserve every patient in this hospital." The guard left the room muttering darkly.

Ruby was praying that it wouldn't work. Kyle sat down and Ruby wondered if he was thinking the same.

At twenty minutes she started to get hopeful.

At twenty five minutes Kyle started filling in the paperwork.

At twenty nine minutes the spell broke with such abruptness that Ruby dropped to the floor and Kyle didn't have time to catch her.

"I feel a little dry, could I have a cup of tea?" Umbridge asked.

"Shut up, are you alright Ruby?" Kyle snapped, bending down to Ruby, she blinked up at him feeling terrible.

"I feel a bit sick…and dizzy." Ruby mumbled, Kyle opened the door and told the guard to sit with Umbridge.

He then helped Ruby to her feet and escorted her back to the office. She sat on the bed and Kyle passed her a Potion, she took it and almost immediately collapsed back on the bed.

"Ruby? Ruby…."

"…come on Ruby, don't make me call Eliza." Ruby opened her eyes and Penny's face swan into view.

"Feel sick…"

"Let's sit you up." Penny helped Ruby sit up and Kyle held a bucket under her chin, she filled it and Penny rubbed her back.

"I can't believe I saved…this job sucks!" Ruby mumbled, Kyle laughed.

"Yes, yes it does. It's too late now though, you're nearly finished with training, you're in."

"Twenty nine minutes…just doing it to spite us!"

"Most definitely."

"Merlin Robert, I've never heard you talk about a patient like this before, they must be a piece of work?" Penny said, looking at Kyle.

"I have never wished death on a patient before, but I don't regret it. At least we can take solace in the fact that it won't be much…." Ruby threw up again, she felt awful.

"Check her over Penny, she shouldn't be throwing up. I'll check on the patient." Kyle left and Penny picked up her wand.

"Have you been feeling ill?"

"I don't have time to feel ill, between here and Mom and worrying about Teddy and everything with Scorpius!" Ruby exclaimed.

"I know, I had a shift pattern like that last year, I barely saw Kingsley, it's hard enough for us to get time together as it is."

"How is he?"

"Oh, he's fine. We're having our weekly date night tomorrow, we've never missed one. You should have one with Scorpius."

"I feel bad for him, we've been like ships passing me in the night, I've been too tired to even say hello, let alone…"

"You must have had some time for him, Ruby." Penny said.

"Not since he was attacked, it's been one thing after another."

"Well, I hate to add another thing." Penny said with a small smile.

"What? I'm not ill am I? I really don't have time for an ulcer or som…"

"It's not an ulcer, it's a baby." Ruby felt herself freeze.

"What?"

"You're pregnant, no wonder the spell has knocked you about."

"What?"

"You. Are. Pregnant. About a month to five weeks so not very far along. Congratulations."

"Oh…"

"Deep breaths, Ruby, deep breaths." Penny said, calming rubbing Ruby's back.

"I…we're always so careful…I…" Ruby looked over at the Potion cabinet and everything fell into place. "Oh my god, the Potion!"

"What Potion?"

"The G14 you gave to Scorpius! It gave him a need to please and…Oh my god, I'm pregnant!"

"Need to please, well I've not heard the side-effect used like that before but…"

"Oh my god! I'm pregnant!"

"Yes, now calm down."

"I…Oh my…"

"How are we doing in here?" Kyle asked, walking back in.

"I think Ruby should take the rest of the night off, could you cover?" Penny asked.

"Of course, Delilah can deal with some of the regular cases in the morning and I've just given the patient a strong sedative, should give me a decent night. Go on home, Ruby, you look frightfully pale."

"I'll make sure she gets there, Amber will be fine for a few more minutes. Come on Ruby." Penny stood up but Ruby didn't move.

"Come on Rubes." Ruby stood up and Penny grabbed her bag and wand for her. Ruby walked past Kyle without wishing him goodnight and walked shakily to the waiting room.

"We'll Floo, come on."

"I'm staying with Vic, at Grimmauld Place."

"Okay, come on." Penny took Ruby's hand and they took the Floo together. When they landed Ruby sat at the kitchen table.

"Where's Scorpius?"

"Third floor, second door."

A few minutes later Scorpius arrived in his dressing gown.

"I'll leave you to it, send me an owl tomorrow Ruby." Ruby nodded and Penny disapparated.

"Ruby are you alright? What happened?" Scorpius asked, sitting opposite her and holding her hands.

"I…I had to do the resuscitation spell."

"Did the patient die?"

"No, twenty nine minutes."

"That was close, why did Penny bring you home? You look bloody awful."

"I passed out."

"Why? Because of the spell?"

"Yes, well…Oh my god!" Ruby cried, putting her head in her hands, she heard Scorpius stand up and move around to her.

"What is it?"

"I…I'm…That night you got attacked, can you remember the night?"

"Not really, it's a bit of a blur, why?"

"We had sex."

"Okay, thanks for the update."

"We had sex but…you were…really good and…"

"Thanks." Scorpius replied, laughing slightly.

"I forgot the charm."

"What charm?"

"The contraceptive charm, you idiot! I'm bloody pregnant!" She expected Scorpius' face to fill with horror but after a shocked silence he grinned from ear to ear.

"Seriously? That's amazing! Merlin, I can't believe it, it's incredible!" Scorpius starting dancing around the kitchen, Ruby gaped at him.

"Ruby, this is brilliant! We're going to be parents! Are you okay? Are you feeling okay? You collapsed, let's get you to bed!"

"Scorpius, calm down! We need to talk about this."

"Do we? Okay, what?" He sat down next to Ruby and clasped both her hands, he still had a sappy smile on his face.

"I…Are we ready? We're really young and did you even want kids?"

"Oh yeah, I've always wanted six."

"Six!"

"Yeah, but one step at a time, this little one is a bit ahead of schedule." He put his hands on Ruby's stomach.

"You're not scared?"

"No, I love you, you love me and we're going to have a baby, what could be more perfect?"

"Don't you think we're a bit young? We're both still in training…"

"You won't be when the baby comes, I could take a year out if you want?"

"I can't…I can't think right now, this is like some alternate universe."

"Yeah, let's get you to bed. I've got a study week, are you in tomorrow?"

"No…not till the evening."

"Then we'll go back to my flat in the morning and have a talk, sort everything out, okay?"

"Okay." Ruby replied, still in shock.

She followed Scorpius upstairs and as soon as the bedroom door closed behind her he lifted her up and carried her over to the bed.

"What are you doing?" She asked, smiling in spite of her shock.

"Making love to you, that okay or are you feeling too sick?" He placed her lightly down on the bed and then placed a silencing charm on the door, he then pointed his wand at Ruby's stomach before laughing as he realised it was too late for the charm.

"This is so incredible, I love you so so much!" He threw his wand aside and climbed on top of Ruby.

"I love you too Scorpius, I'm just a bit too freaked out at the moment to be excited, is that okay?"

"Yeah, of course, are you too freaked out to have sex?"

"No."

"Good, because I've got a bet to pay."

"No, no bet, just me and you, making love." Ruby said, sitting up, Scorpius nodded and pulled off his dressing gown. Ruby pulled off her Healing robes and threw them on the floor. Scorpius found the zip at the back of her pale blue dress and slid it down before running his hand up her back.

Ruby leaned forward and kissed him, it was a slow kiss and Ruby felt herself relax into him, he knew what she needed.

He helped her out of the dress and she pulled off his t-shirt and found the spot on his shoulder that he loved. She sucked it lightly and he groaned.

"I love you, Scorpius Malfoy." He moved so that he was behind her and unclasped her bra and moved his hands so that he was holding both her breasts and her bum in his lap. He massaged her and she moved her bum to create friction for him.

"I want us to come together." She whispered, he nodded and moved so that she was lying down, he kissed her softly on the lips and then moved down and pulled off her knickers. She saw him kick off his boxers and she sat up to kiss him again.

His hand found her breast and she moaned into his mouth, he then ran his hand down to feel if she was ready.

"Are you sure you don't want…"

"Together Scorpius, please." She said, he nodded, plunging a finger into her, she was wet, he thrust a few times and she reached down to stroke him.

"Now." He said, Ruby lay down and he climbed onto her. His grey eyes found her blue ones and he pushed into her.

"I love you, Ruby Weasley." He grunted, she nodded and gripped his shoulder tightly, the pleasure building. He moaned and she felt him pushing deeper, she reached for his bum and pulled him deeper still. The friction was incredible.

He found her centre and she cried out, within moments they came. He stayed inside her, collapsed on top of her and she held him tightly.

"I'm scared, Scorpius." She said quietly, he leaned up and looked down at her.

"Don't be scared, I'll be with you, every step of the way, I promise." Ruby nodded and then put her hand on her stomach, Scorpius smiled and looked down at it, adding his own hand on top of hers.

"Together, always." He whispered.

When Ruby woke up the following morning she was in Scorpius' arms and he was rubbing her arm with his thumb.

"Morning." She mumbled.

"Good morning, beautiful." It took Ruby a few seconds to remember why Scorpius was in such a good mood.

"Did last night really happen?"

"You mean did you pass out at work and find out we're having a baby? Yes it did." Ruby rolled over, Scorpius' face was alight with happiness.

"We can't tell anyone yet."

"I know, we'll wait till ten weeks, like everyone else. You might face the same problems as Vic though, I can't imagine your mother being fooled for long, especially as you're living with her next week."

"She'll know soon, she'll hit me with another Babbling hex if she suspects!"

"I still can't believe she did that, it's hilarious!"

"I nearly told her we had sex in Uncle Percy's room, I thought someone had slipped me a Truth Potion!"

"Let's get ready and go to my flat, we need to talk about everything." Ruby nodded.

They managed to sneak out of Grimmauld Place without encountering Vic and when they arrived at Scorpius' flat Ruby found herself imagining a baby there.

"How many bedrooms do you have?"

"Three, we could have one for the Nursery."

"Let's just make a pot of tea and…and sit down." Ruby said, still trying to wrap her head around everything. Scorpius disappeared and returned within minutes with a tray of tea.

He sat at the dining table and Ruby sat opposite him. He poured the tea and looked up at her, looking suddenly quite serious.

"Look Ruby, I'm not going to push you into this, if you don't want it…I'll understand." He said.

"I do want it…"

"Good, because I'm not sure I would understand." Ruby burst out laughing and after a moment Scorpius joined in.

"We just need to figure things out…like, we should live together, right?" Ruby asked cautiously.

"Of course, here is best I think. It's close to the Ministry, the hospital and Teddy and Vic." Ruby nodded.

"We can't move in together until we tell everyone, and Teddy's back."

"We can stay at Grimmauld Place, Dad's still a bit worried about me so it wouldn't look suspicious."

"Okay, when's the trial again?"

"Next Thursday." Scorpius replied, his face darkening for a moment.

"What's happening with your Grandmother?"

"Auror Potter and Mrs Weasley, Hermione, are still working out the charges. With her ill health they think it will be house arrest, but not at the Manor."

"Why not?"

"Dad wants to tear it down, he told me last week, it belongs to him now and he wants it gone. Anyway, back to the baby. Do you want me to take a year out? How far along are you? Five weeks?"

"Yeah, so it's due in December. I don't want you to take a year out, I could work in emergency clinics, the hours are regular. It's not as exciting but it's what Penny did when Alistair was young."

"Okay, but when you're ready get back into mainstream, I don't want you to give it up, I know you love it. I could go part-time after the baby's born, just for six months or so, it won't delay me that much." Ruby nodded.

"I think we should set up a joint bank account, I know we're both alright for money but…"

"Yeah, let's do that soon, my parents still have access to my account and I don't want them to see me buying baby stuff."

"I'll go to the bank this week, the Goblins…"

"Be discrete, Uncle Bill and Auntie Fleur both work there, and Henry."

"I can be discrete. What else do we need to do?"

"Not get too excited, it's still early, anything could happen."

"Don't say that! We'll make an appointment with a Healer, do you think Penny would do it?"

"I'm sure she would, especially the early checks, until we tell everyone."

They gradually started to develop the plans and by the time Ruby left to go to Wales she felt confident that they were doing the right thing, they were going to be parents.

She Floo-ed to Wales and when she landed on the rug her mother was lying on the sofa talking to Aunt Minnie.

"Ruby, my word you look tired!" Her mother said, looking over at her.

"The patient nearly died but I saved them at the last second, the spell knocked me out and Penny had to take me home. Anyway, how are you?"

"The patient?" Aunt Minnie asked. "Very mysterious, anyone we know?"

"You won't get a word out of me, I value my job. How are you, Mom?"

"Much better thank you, I can walk to the bathroom, just about…."

"Hello Poppet, I thought I heard someone arrive. Tea?" Her father asked, coming in and kissing Ruby on the check.

"Yes please." Ruby leant down and kissed her mother and then her Aunt Minnie before sitting down in the armchair.

"Did you know that Grandma sent Kyle a Howler?" She asked her parents.

"No, but I'm not surprised, we've barely seen you in weeks!" Her father exclaimed with a hidden smile.

"Well, hopefully they'll die soon and things can get back to normal."

"Will we find out who it is, when they die?" Her mother asked.

"Probably, it will be announced in the paper. I'll get a whole week off, I can't wait."

"I'm off on Friday, can you still move home?"

"Yes, Scorpius suggested he could come too, then even if I'm still working they'll be someone around, do you mind?"

"Not at all, what a lovely idea!"

"When do the twins break up?"

"A week, Wednesday."

"How long will you be away, Dad?"

"Hopefully just a week, Ron said if it's any longer he'll stay on and I can come back."

"You'll be away for your birthday though!"

"We'll celebrate when he's back." Her mother said, smiling at her husband.

"Good, I'm taking you to a restaurant in Edinburgh, that one we went to in October." She said, Aunt Minnie nodded.

"Fred, can you make the tea? I need to talk to Ruby about work."

"Okay, don't get stressed though." He disappeared and Eliza cast a charm to ensure privacy.

"Have you made any progress?"

"Not much, we tried last night but the patient kept calling and then I passed out. Penny said Mr Longbottom was too tired though so maybe night shifts aren't the best time."

"I've had some ideas for the Potion, can you show her?" Aunt Minnie withdrew a piece of parchment from her bag and passed it to Ruby. She scanned it quickly.

"You added a Babbling concoction, gee I wonder where you got that idea?"

"I said I was sorry!" Her mother exclaimed.

"Yeah, well Uncle Harry's probably still annoyed with me. It's a good idea though, they're definitely responding to words but if we could get them to talk we might make more progress. What do you think, Aunt Minnie?"

"I think that you two need to concentrate on feeling better before you get much further, you look frightfully pale, Ruby. And don't get me started on you, Eliza!"

"I'm taking all my Potions and not moving, I can't switch off my brain!" Her mother protested indignantly.

"And I haven't had a day off in weeks, and I had to save the life of the most evil…" Ruby stopped and took a deep, steadying breath before continuing. "I've had a lot on my mind, as soon as the patient dies, everything will be back to normal. Well, it won't until the trials over and Teddy is back."

"How is Scorpius feeling about the trial?" Her mother asked, removing the charm and allowing Fred to come back with the tray of tea.

"Nervous I think, he said his Dad is going to burn down the Manor."

"Ask him when, I'll happily watch that place burn." Her father muttered.

"Me too." Her mother added, looking pleased.

"Me three, ask Scorpius to find out when, Ruby." Aunt Minnie said, looking slightly uneasy. Ruby nodded with a small smile.

"I bet it'll be when I'm away. Anyway, do you want Waffles Ruby?" Ruby was about to say yes when she realised her preferred topping, cinnamon. She felt her heart sink.

"Ruby?"

"Oh, no thanks. Scorpius wants to take me out for lunch, we haven't spent much time together."

"I know the feeling." Her father muttered.

"Look, it's not my fault…" Ruby was about to reply when a Patronus arrived, it was a badger.

The patient is deteriorating, please report to the hospital immediately

"Brilliant!" Ruby said, jumping up and downing the rest of her tea in one.

"Why do you have to go in?" Aunt Minnie asked.

"Because if they die we both need to be there, we're the only Healers with access so I'll need to sign the death certificate. See you later, think deadly thoughts!"

"Ruby!" Her mother chastised.

"Believe me, if you know who it was…anyway, I'll speak to you later, love you all." Ruby flooed to the hospital, stopped off at the office to put on her robes and then walked to Umbridge's room.

"Good morning, Ruby."

"Morning sir, sorry about last night."

"Don't mention it, with any luck it will be over today, she's been delirious but her mouth is still fully functioning, unfortunately."

"I can hear you, you know?"

"We know." Said Ruby, Umbridge did look much worse.

"You look happy." Umbridge said, looking at Ruby.

"I've just had a lovely morning, having sex with Scorpius, and then I went to have a cup of tea with my parents and my godmother Minerva McGonagall, life is pretty good right now." She heard Kyle snort in delight.

"You are vulgar."

"I know, I think I get it from my Dad."

"I heard the other twin died in the final battle." Ruby didn't allow Umbridge's remark to wipe the smile off her face.

"Yes, he did. We're very proud of him. Did you know my Aunt Ginny is about to have twins?"

"Your whole family are vermin!" Ruby was surprised that Kyle was allowing her to keep talking.

"Not anymore, we pretty much run the Ministry these days, along with Kingsley Shacklebolt of course. Of, and did you know my Mom has two Order of Merlin first class', the first person in history? She cured lycanthropy."

"She cured those monsters?"

"Yeah, only five years after leaving Hogwarts. And my Dad's shops are so successful that he's got over 300 stores on three continents and he's about to expand to a fourth."

"I gave them the idea to use Polyjuice to impersonate your father, did you…"

"It didn't work! She knew it wasn't him! You lost, Madam Umbridge!"

"I never lose…" Umbridge started coughing and Kyle walked forwards.

"Oh dear, let's get some oxygen on you." Kyle shot Ruby a look telling her to let it go and she nodded, she's said her piece.

"And you, Robert, filthy Mudblood!" She spluttered, Kyle didn't react so Umbridge continued through her coughs. "You never deserved Muriel, she…just felt…sorry for you…couldn't even give her children…what kind of man are you?"

"One who is trying to keep you alive, Dolores." He said, quietly.

Umbridge opened her mouth to respond but then fell into unconsciousness and the alarm started.

"Could you do it, sir?" Ruby asked, Kyle nodded and started the spell. This time it did not work and at thirty minutes, Ruby signed the paperwork pronouncing Dolores Jane Umbridge dead.
