Clouds hung low in a barren field. Many battles had taken place here, the feel of dread and death fell thick in the air. The Valkyries stood and awaited their training orders from the head master.

Tamsin stood at the forefront of the formation, being the most skilled of all the current instructors. Her role was important; to train the next of the Valkyries.

Things had changed from when she first entered her own training. Times had changed and so the way they conducted warfare was different. But that only meant Tamsin was wiser. She'd lived long enough to achieve everything she needed for a life that was well off, but the call of battle pleased her more. It called to her. Nothing would take its place, in any lifetime. She was a Valkyrie through and through. One of the elite.

"Start your warm-up, and we'll move forward!" Tamsin shouted, pacing restlessly.

Odin and the Gods had been breathing down her neck lately. The Valkyries were not being trained at a rate quick enough to be satisfying. More were dying than were being born and that thought terrified even the highest on the totem pole. Their main job was to bring souls to their peace in Valhalla, but something was causing a disturbance. Something was hunting them, permanently eliminating them, last life or needed to be prepared.

"Pair up and work on your sparring!" Tamsin yelled to the Valkyries in training. Her colleague, Eir, appeared just then.

"You're too hard on them..." Eir said with concern, watching as well.

"It's not like they're human, sister. If they can't handle it, they should go." Tamsin chuckled.

"Oh, Tamsin. You still underestimate the humans..." Eir said, taking Tamsin's shoulder. "You'll be surprised one day, mark my words..."

"We can wager on that!" Tamsin exclaimed, extending her arm.

Eir took it, clasping forearm to forearm. Little did Tamsin know, her sister would be right in time.

Tamsin's POV

"Goddamnit, this stupid computer!" I murmur to myself.

This cop thing is a lot harder than I remember, but a girl's got to support herself somehow. Even if it is a front, I have to live a "normal" life. Blend in and lay low until I'm up on my feet again.

"Tamsin, you look like you're about to launch that computer out of a window..." Dyson laughs. "Coffee break?"

I nod solemnly. I still didn't know every facet of Dyson's life, but I know he helped me get my job back and he is trustworthy enough. The smell of fresh coffee from the break room is calling my name. Dyson follows behind me as we step into the small, desolate room a couple feet away. It wasn't the most lavish break room, but it came complete with a coffee maker, microwave, a vending machine full of ramen noodles, and enough sugar to make you diabetic. Luckily, that wouldn't be too much a problem for us.

"So," Dyson said, reaching for the coffee pot, "how's the search for a truck going? Going for a beat-up, piece of shit again?" He laughed.

"Firstly, that thing was my baby, how dare you?" I scolded him as he set the coffee to brew. "Secondly, would you expect anything more?"

"Hey, I just don't want to have to rescue you every five miles of road." Dyson said jokingly. "You need something reliable. New life, new you, y'know?"

I roll my eyes at that. He had a point. I was going to a couple places today, but I know for sure that I don't want something that isn't me. Money is a non-factor, but Dyson was right. Being reborn, I could choose how I want to live my life. The giant, red RESET button had been punched. I could live as a saint and do things so differently than I did in my previous lives. But something about being Dark, big, and bad was vaguely appealing. Something is different. Nothing is black and white anymore. But maybe that would be a good thing, in time.

"You're right." I said finally, after realizing I probably looked like I had three heads. "I'll go today. Done deal."

"Can I come?" Dyson grinned sheepishly, rubbing his hands together.

"Ugh, fine." I roll my eyes, grabbing a mug and pouring the first cup of fresh coffee. "But so is Kenzi, I can't handle a whole day of you without a buffer."

"You just want to look at her, no need to make excuses!" Dyson roared, pouring his own cup and following me out.

"Right again. She is very appealing to the eye, what can I say?" I shrug.

"Can't argue with you there, partner..." Dyson said.

"Hey!" I punch his shoulder with a laugh. "Speaking of, I should let her know what's what, so she can take her 3 hour shower and be ready in time."

"Good call." Dyson smiles, taking his seat at our shared desk. "We'll never make it if you don't."

Kenzi's POV

"Aah!" I yelped, dodging the giant hammer swung my way. "Geez, could you be any more angry? Here I thought my day would be gentle trolls and a simple conversation. But no! I can play hardball too, tough guy!"

A soft vibration comes from my pocket, as I try to catch my breath behind a crate in the condemned warehouse. Bo appears beside me, out of breath as well, as I pull out my phone.

"Really, Kenz? We're about to be smushed to death." Bo says, taking a peek over the crate.

"Its Tamsin, I didn't even know she had a phone, but here we are." I laugh.

*Tamsin: Be ready in an hour. We have business.*

*K: Kinda busy here, but is it the serious kind or the sexy kind? Do I need to bring Wondersnatch? What should I wear?*

I place my phone back in my pocket, just as Bo rips me away to another spot. Wood from the crate flys everywhere and the ground shakes.

"PUNY!" The troll roars, another vibration from my pocket. "Where... are you?!"

Bo taps my shoulder, and motions towards a thick rope lying on the ground in front of us. We nod at each other. She grabs one end, as I grab the other. Peaking out from behind our cover, the troll has its back towards us. As if we're thinking from the same brain, we charge towards the 8 foot giant, positioning the rope towards its ankles. Yanking upwards, he goes down, shaking the ground with him.

"Quick! Let's tie him up before he recovers!" Bo says, wrapping the rope around his feet.

"Wow, I never thought I'd see the day where you teach me some freaky stuff, Bo-Bo." I laugh, lifting up a foot. "Shit, you're heavy. Workout for the year."

Bo chuckles and rolls her eyes. "We have to turn him over."

I groan the entire time, but we finally manage it. By the time we finish, he's positioned like a shrimp, unable to move. Bo reaches out for a high five.

"Yeaaaah!" I exclaim, smacking her hand. "We kick ass! K-Star and Bo-Bo, on the job!"

Bo laughs at that. I missed taking cases with her. She was so caught up sometimes, that I would think she forgot about me. But I know what it's like to want to be around someone so much that it's the only thing you can think of. You live, eat, breath, and sleep for it. It's been a while since I've felt that way, but the potential is there. With Tamsin. It's new and exciting, but the difference between us is prominent. She's Fae and I'm just a human trying to survive. Tamsin has always been good at surviving and we have that in common. We may have more in common than we think and that thought is exciting. Which reminds me... I pull out my phone as Bo leads us back to the car.

*T: I just need you.*

My heart flutters at that and my knees are nearly jelly under me. But I regain composure.

*T: Although, if you bring Bo, Dyson won't be so insufferable...

I type back a quick reply, letting her know we'd be there to rescue her. Bo is eyeing me suspiciously as I take the passenger seat.

"You're such a dead giveaway." She laughs, pinching my cheek, as if they weren't already colored.

"Just drive." I pipe back.

That's all I can muster without exploding from nerves.
