Tamsin kept her word and let Kenzi drive her truck. They parted ways with Dyson and Bo for the night. Bo didn't leave without letting Tamsin know she had better take care of her best friend or there would be consequences. Tamsin reassured her that there would be no danger tonight. She planned to take her somewhere special.
"Sorry BoBo got so anal on you..." Kenzi chuckled, pulling Tamsin's truck under a tree. It was dark by now and the stars were making an appearance.
"She's not all that scary." Tamsin smiled. "Come out front with me?"
Kenzi nodded and the two women stepped out. There was a slight breeze, but it was comfortable. Meeting on the other side, Tamsin motioned for Kenzi to sit on the hood and the Valkyrie followed. They sat there in silence for a minute, enjoying the view. Every so often, Kenzi would glance at Tamsin. She was happy to be there with her and she hoped Tamsin felt the same way. She didn't mention it, but there was a certain sadness in the Valkyrie's eyes. Kenzi knew she would do her best to hide it and so she didn't ask questions. Her memories had been back for a while now, but they weren't exactly a hot topic of conversation.
"Y'know, I come out here to think all the time..." Tamsin sighed, still looking out in the distance. "But this is the first time I've ever brought someone with me."
"Ooh, way to make a girl feel special." Kenzi smiled, but it quickly fell. "On a serious note, is this okay? It's, like, your hidey-hole and all..."
Tamsin turned to face her, "It's too okay, actually. It feels good. With you..." She said, reaching up to caress Kenzi's cheek.
Kenzi looked deep into Tamsin's eyes and melted into her touch, a small smile playing on her lips. She didn't say anything back, not wanting to ruin the moment.
"You're gorgeous, Kenzi." Tamsin said, moving closer. "Absolutely, utterly gorgeous..."
"Tamsin, what are we doing?" Kenzi asked softly, as if the whole world would crumble.
"Well, I don't know what you're doing, but I think I'm courting you?" Tamsin said, both certain and uncertain.
"Oh, is that what this is?" Kenzi smiled, grabbing Tamsin's hand and placing it in her lap. She looked down, tracing the lines on her palm, her dark hair falling into her face. "I like it... I like you."
Tamsin said nothing, only lifted her chin and closed the distance between them. She thought about how soft Kenzi's lips are, how she could spend whole lifetimes kissing them. They kissed slowly, enjoying the feel of each other's lips, not caring about the world around them. Kenzi smiled against Tamsin's lips, pulling away and resting their foreheads together.
"I'm going to assume you like me too." Kenzi whispered, biting her bottom lip.
"Just a little, I'm still trying to figure that part out..." Tamsin joked.
"You make me so nervous, Tamsin... I've never done this before..." Kenzi admitted softly.
"There's nothing to be nervous about, Kenz." Tamsin said, pulling their foreheads apart. "We can go slow, no pressure."
"I feel like that's against your nature... you have lifetimes of experience. Why would you settle on a human?"
Tamsin grew serious at that, looking into Kenzi's eyes.
"Never in any of my lifetimes have I ever wanted to be with someone more. Human or not, it would still be you, Kenzi. You are unlike anyone I have ever met." Tamsin chuckled, "I'll admit, you annoyed me at first. But you chipped away at my cold heart, piece by piece."
"What can I say? I have that effect on others." Kenzi winked.
"You sure do." Tamsin smiled. "Now, how about I get us home?"
Kenzi grabbed onto Tamsin's leather jacket, pulling her to her lips once more. Tamsin took hold of her cheek, moving her lips against the other woman's. Kenzi swiped her tongue against Tamsin's lips and their tongues met. The kiss grew more heated by the second and Kenzi felt a dull tug in the pit of her stomach. She broke the kiss abruptly, putting distance back between them. Both women were breathing heavily.
"You have no idea how long I've wanted to do that..." Kenzi panted, making sure her hair wasn't out of place.
"Same..." Tamsin said. "We should do it again..."
"Nice try, stud." Kenzi laughed, jumping off the hood. "Maybe tomorrow."
Tamsin groaned as Kenzi entered the truck, follwing her soon after.
2 weeks later, Tamsin had finally begun to get into a good rhythm of things. She had things lined up; A good job, a new truck, and an apartment in the works. Work was hectic. Tamsin and Dyson had cases piled up to the brim on their desks that seemed to come out of nowhere. Both cops were exhausted and no amount of coffee could keep them going on a Friday night. They sat at the bar at the Dal and decided take a load off. Trick placed beers in front of them both as they talked amongst themselves.
"I'm just saying, these cases cant be a coincidence. I've never seen this many in the span of a few days." Dyson said, trying to rub the tension from his forehead. "We'll need to get Hale in on this...
"Do we have to talk about work? How's life? Gotten laid, yet?" Tamsin droned.
"Tams, I'm serious. We've been putting things off for long enough." Dyson sighed. "I know you don't want to, but everyone needs to work together. You know what that means..."
"No, I don"t." Tamsin mumbled, taking a sip of her beer.
Trick rung his hands dry in a towel, hearing their conversation and came up to them.
"Tamsin, we know you dont want anything to do with your past, but we need to align the Fae. This is much bigger than our individual differences." He said. "We need Evony, like it or not."
"I don't give a damn, I want nothing to do with those people!" Tamsin snarled.
"Calm down, partner." Dyson said, placing a hand on her shoulder.
Tamsin pinched the bridge of her nose, her jaw flexing. She didn't want to step back into those shoes. The Dark always had strings attached. It was like a drug that never let up on it's cold grip. But she knew they needed to do something and soon. To protect the people they love.
"Fine." She said finally. "Bet she'll be happy to see me..."
"I know someone who will be in 5...4...3..." Dyson counted.
Kenzi and Bo walked through the doors of the Dal arm in arm, subtle smiles plastered to their faces. They were talking to eachother quietly, making their way to the bar. Bo sat next to Dyson and Kenzi moved herself in between the two cops.
"Shoo, wolfy. I need a minute with Officer Slamsin..." Kenzi said, leaning against the bar.
"Ouch, K-star." Dyson pouted. "Game of pool, Bo? Loser buys drinks!"
"You're on." Bo smirked and the two made their way to the back of the Dal.
"Would you join me outside for a minute?" Kenzi said sweetly.
"Don't twist my arm, sweetheart..." Tamsin replied, grabbing Kenzi's hand and leading her into the alley.
The night was perfect, not too cold with a slight humidity hanging in the air. The stars made an appearance and framed the sky perfectly. Tamsin immediately pinned Kenzi to the brick wall, her hands clutching Kenzi's face as their lips crashed together. Kenzi whimpered softly at the contact, gripping Tamsin's leather jacket. The heat behind the kiss was enough to make her knees go weak. Their tongues met, clashing with passion. Kenzi moved her hands underneath Tamsin's shirt, scratching lightly at her back. The Valkyrie took hold of Kenzi's hips, needing to be impossibly closer to the woman.
Finally, Kenzi broke the kiss.
"Aw, I wasn't done with you..." Tamsin pouted.
"As convincing as that sounds, and trust me, you are very convincing... a girl's gotta breathe." Kenzi smiled.
Tamsin said nothing to that, opting to lean against the wall next to her. Both women looked up at the stars for a moment, catching a breath. Kenzi grabbed onto Tamsin's hand, never looking down. The Valkyrie glanced at her, thinking she was the most beautiful woman she had ever seen. Kenzi's lips were parted slightly, the moon making her icy eyes pop as her hair delicately framed her face. She wanted so badly to kiss her again, but wanted to enjoy this moment.
It didn't last long when slow, heavy footsteps could be heard from Kenzi's side of the alley. Both women turned to look, watching a tall, dark figure make it's way towards them. Tamsin stepped out in front of Kenzi, shielding her with her body. As the figure stepped into the moonlight, they could see the veins formed all over his body, bulging and pulsating.
"Kenzi, get inside and find Bo..." Tamsin said lowly, not taking her eyes off of him.
"Tamsin, don't do-" Kenzi started.
"Now! Please..." Tamsin pleaded.
Kenzi pursed her lips, but did as she was told. Tamsin saw the mercenary's eyes flicker towards her and knew she was what he was here for. The Valkyrie just stood in his way.
"Bring the girl to me. Her presence is requested." He said in a deep voice, standing a few feet away.
"Not a chance, big guy." Tamsin said, removing her jacket and pulling a knife from her waistline.
"Very well... We can do this the hard way, but I will take her." He said, preparing himself for a fight.
The man lunged at her, fist balled and aiming straight at her face. Tamsin dodged it easily enough, stabbing into his side. He was big, but big meant slow. He grimaced for a second, touching the wound. Almost immediately, he turned, charging Tamsin and tackling her to the ground. The Valkyrie didn't have much time to react before her face was pummeled to hell. She tried to block his movements, but the brute force was intense enough to break through. Suddenly, strong hands ripped him away. Tamsin could hear a loud, guttural roar, Dyson's face appearing above her, and his hand helping her up. She grimaced, feeling the impact on her ribs, but steeled herself anyway.
The man stood up, pulling a blade from inside his jacket. He readied himself, roaring back at Dyson, who charged him. It all happened so fast and Tamsin didn't see much, but blood began to seep from the mercenary. Dyson was already behind him, crouched low with blood dripping from his elongated fingernails. Deep gashes appeared along the man's torso as he froze for a second, a small groan falling from his lips. Tamsin took this as her only opening and did what she did best. Doubt his brain to a perfect boil.
"Who sent you?" Tamsin said, her face gaunt.
"N-n-no... talking." He replied slowly, falling to his knees and his hands flying to his head.
"You will tell me, friend... Who sent you?" Tamsin said, stepping closer as Dyson came to her side.
The man began to smack his head and rock on his knees, groaning with confusion.
"He p-payed well... sharp dressed..." He stuttered out, smacking his head harder.
"A name, now!" Tamsin yelled. Dyson put a hand in her shoulder, willing her to stop the torture.
"D-d-deimos... Dei..mos... D-" He whimpered softly.
Tamsin turned back to Dyson, a vision of pure rage. The wolf pursed his lips, both knowing what the other was thinking. This couldn't be ignored any longer. They needed to take action.
Tamsin yelled at no one, her fist making contact with the brick wall, before turning her attention to the man behind her. She grabbed him by his jacket, punching him, and throwing him up against the wall. She entered his breathing room, her nose practically meeting his if she got any closer.
"You go back to him and you show him how poorly you accomplished your mission..." Tamsin sneered lowly. "You weren't worth the time."
"Tamsin, enough..." Dyson said lowly. He hadn't seen her this way since before she was reborn.
The Valkyrie looked at the Wolf dangerously, before letting go. She went for her jacket, but Dyson grabbed onto her arm, stopping her.
"Are you okay, partner?" Dyson said with concern.
Tamsin nodded, "This is the first time I've had to use my powers since... you know."
"I know," Dyson said. "But again, you did this to protect Kenzi. No one will fault you for that..."
"What the fuck is wrong with me?" Tamsin said in a whisper. "I'm nothing like I used to be..."
"Some will say you are better." Dyson chuckled. "Believe it. Asshat here, will be fine... just confused for a while."
"If you hadn't been here, I would've lost control, Dyson. That's not like me." Tamsin said, crossing her arms. "It just... took over."
"Hey, if you need me as a test dummy, I'm here. You know that." Dyson smiled. "Now, go get your girl. I'm sure she's losing her shit. I'll clean up."
Tamsin smiled back at him, entering the Dal. She was grateful to have Dyson. To have such a reliable partner, one who would ground her when she went batshit. The Valkyrie felt stuck in the middle of a struggle with her powers. But she would definitely take Dyson up on his offer. And soon, she would find Evony.
Kenzi crashed into her seconds later, her arms snaking around her neck as Tamsin wrapped around her waist. The woman mumbled something into the Valkyrie's chest and Tamsin laughed, moving back a little.
"I didn't understand what you said, but I'm sure it's something along the lines of 'I'm glad you're not dead'." Tamsin chuckled softly.
"You scared the shit out of me, Tamsin." Kenzi said, unshed tears in her eyes.
"I'm safe. But most of all, you're safe... Deimos sent him for you."
Kenzi was quiet at that. She looked into Tamsin's eyes before crashing back into the crook of the Valkyrie's neck. Tamsin shut her eyes, taking in all of Kenzi, thankful that nothing had gone wrong. She would give her more details later that night, but right now, she enjoyed what was right in front her.
The future would wait one night.
A/N: This fic will probably get a lot darker from here on out. There will still be happy moments, but I digress. Song is the Outsider by A Perfect Circle, take a listen.
