Book four Peace Chapter Three: The Induction
It had been a couple days and Sesi and Ren were still in the healing room. Kya was the only one that went in the room. No one wanted to go see the women in the condition they were in. Honora was standing outside of the room when Kya came out of the room. The two collided, and Honora tried to look in the room. Kya gave her half a smile as she put her hand on Honora's shoulder. Honora sighed before she followed Kya into the dining area. Everyone sat there in silence as they ate. Every meal had been eaten in silence since Sesi and Ren were place in the healing room. Everyone looked up when they heard someone at the doorway hoping it was Sesi or Ren, but it was only the world leaders. Everyone looked back down at their food. The world leaders looked at everyone with sympathy. Kuvira stood and walked back to the healing room. She hit Ren in the back, hoping she make her open her eyes.
"Open your eyes you damn faker. People are worried about your ass and you're in here sleeping. Get up and be the avatar. Be the avatar you want to be, and the one the world needs," Kuvira said.
Kuvira looked at Ren, but she still didn't open her eyes. Kuvira left the room with her head down, wiping the tears out of her eyes. Everyone stared at her when she got in the dining area, but she didn't know what to say. Sky finished his dinner, and walked out to the courtyard. Everyone knew he was heading to the Police Headquarters to work as a distraction. Honora looked at Izumi, and thought about telling everyone. She knew it wouldn't make a difference, but maybe Ren went into that fight distracted, or angry and that's why she is in one of the healing rooms. Suyin touched Honora's shoulder, making her jump a bit. Everyone noticed, and they all raised their eyebrows.
"Aunt Honora, are you alright? You have seemed a bit out of it since Ren and Sesi got hurt," Iroh said.
Honora ignored the question and continued to eat her rice. Izumi glared at her over her glasses. Su touched Honora's shoulder again. She gave her a look she only gave her children. Honora looked at the healing room, then Izumi. She swallowed her rice as she put her head down. She pulled her hair down and started to play with it. Izumi knew her sister only did that when she was nervous or stressed. Everyone watched as Honora continued to play with her hair. Bumi nudged Tenzin, but Tenzin told him to stop. Bumi nudged Lin, and she looked at him. He pointed at Honora for a moment and mouthed how she plays with her hair when she is nervous. Lin slammed her foot on the ground to see Honora's heart beat was a bit off. Lin glared at Honora. Honora could see she now had two people glaring at her. She wondered who it would be worse Izumi, or Lin. Honora opened her mouth, but Izumi kicked her under the table. Honora looked at Iroh and could see the look in his eyes. She knew she hid the secret from him for a long time, but how would he take it. Honora smiled at Iroh before she looked at her sister one last time. Honora sighed before she spoke.
"Aki, is my great granddaughter. I had a daughter that we banished due to her wanting to kill Izumi. We watched her from a distance and found out she had a daughter. I then became a great grandmother. Iroh and Korra wanted a baby and we didn't want Aki to grow up with my daughter too so we convinced my granddaughter it was for the best that she gave the baby up. Only three people knew the secret until the other day. Ren learned the secret when she overheard Izumi and I arguing, and she must have gone into the battle hot-headed as usual. She felt we should have said something before," Honora said.
Iroh stared at Honora before he turned and looked at Izumi. The two women could see the hurt in his eyes. Iroh pushed himself away from the table and made his way for the courtyard. Izumi reached out to touch his arm, but he pulled away. Izumi and Honora could feel everyone staring at them. Izumi took a deep breath before she excused herself from the table. Honora sat there in silence with her head hung low. Everyone continued to eat, and eventually started to clean the table. Honora sat at the table for a while. Everyone eventually went to bed including Honora and Izumi. Before Kya went to bed she checked on Sesi and Ren one more time. Around midnight Ren started to groan before she opened her eyes. She looked around to see Sesi in another bed. She noticed they were in one of the healing rooms. Ren placed her feet on the ground She stood, and started to slowly walk out of the room. She slowly made her way down the hall to Kya's room and opened the door as quietly as possible. She was about to wake Kya when her legs gave out and she fell forward onto Kya's bed. Ren heard two people grunt under her, but she struggled to get up. She felt someone push her down a bit before the moved the blankets off of their head. Ren stared at Lin for a minute before she looked away. Kya final got out from under Ren.
"Ren, what are you doing here? I think you should be in the healing room. It will be better for you. I have everything I need in there," Kya said.
"Aunt Kya, why didn't you tell me? Did you think this would really make a difference in how I would treat you? Aunt Kya, I love you no matter what. I knew you liked women, but Lin I had no clue. I'm so happy you are happy. I need a little help though," Ren said with a smile.
Kya smiled, and hugged Ren. Ren looked at Lin with a smirk before she tried to stand. Ren heard someone coming down the hall, and she forced herself to stand. She grabbed Lin, and pushed her out the window with her armor. Ren shut the window before Lin could pop her head back into sight. There was a knock at the door before Tenzin slid the door open. He, Kai, and Jinora stood in the doorway. Jinora ran in and hugged Ren. Tenzin walked in to hug Ren, but stepped on Lin's underwear. Tenzin looked down, and moved his foot. He looked at Kya before he pushed the pair of underwear to the side with his foot.
"Kya, why do you have underwear on the floor and who do they belong to? Tenzin asked.
"Sex is a natural Grandpa Tenzin. It is none of your business who Aunt Kya is sleeping with. That is her business. She is an adult and can make adult decisions with who to have sex with. At this very moment five couples are having sex. That should be enough proof for you. Now shoo," Ren said.
Tenzin cleared his throat trying to think of what to say. Ren grabbed him and pushed him out of the room. Jinora, Kai, and Kya all looked at her. Ren shrugged before she leaned against the wall. Kai helped Ren back into the room. Ren looked at Sesi as she climbed back into bed. Kai kissed the top of Ren's forehead and smiled at her. Jinora crouched down and placed her hand on Ren's cheek. They both looked at Sesi before they walked out of the room. Ren looked at Sesi for a minute before she pulled water out of the glass next to her. She slowly moved it above Sesi before she dropped it on her. Sesi sat straight up, and looked around. Ren propped herself against the wall to look at the woman. Sesi stared at her for a moment before she tried to get up. When Sesi tried to stand she fell to the ground. Ren got up and tried to help her up. When she knew she wasn't going to get Sesi off of the ground she went to the door. She started to walk down the hall and yelled for help. She leaned against the wall before she started to yell down the hall for help. She slammed into the wall again, but she continued to walk down the hall. She fell to the ground, but continued to yell for help. She saw black dots forming as two figures ran toward her. She reached for them but blacked out before they got to her. Tenzin and Pema were crouched down next to Ren. Ren opened her eyes for a minute to try and push herself up, but she fell to the ground again. Tenzin yelled for Kya to come help him. He touched Ren to picked her up, and felt how hot she was. Kya finally came as Ren started to break into a sweat. Tenzin carried Ren into the healing room.
Ren stood behind the old team avatar as they faced Azula. Azula shot a fireball and she jumped, forgetting that it couldn't hurt her. The one thing Ren noticed was this was after Zuko had joined her great grandfather. A family betrayl she thought to herself. She felt a gust of wind turn her around and she saw Aang. He stepped aside to let Ren see Tonraq an Unalaq fighting. Ren felt a water whip turn her around. Korra moved out of Ren's way and Ren saw Korra fighting Unalaq. Two more family betrayals. She looked at Aang and Korra before she took a deep breath. She already knew what they were trying to tell her. She nodded at them before they vanished.
Ren opened her eyes and found herself in the healing rom again. She saw a crutch next to her bed. She reached for it as she got out of her bed. She made her way for the kitchen to grab lychee juice before she went to the dining area. She stood there for a moment and watched everyone eat. She sat down at table and placed the crutch behind her. Pema placed a bowl of fruit in front of her, and she smiled up at her grandmother. Everyone was talking about different things and Ren saw two people were still missing from the table. Sky and Sesi were still missing. She heard the clicking of metal on the floor. She turned her head toward the door as Sky walked in the door. She got up as fast as she could, and grabbed her crutch. She started to hobble over to him as fast as she could before she threw her crutch on the floor. She fell against him before they both started to laugh. He pulled her up a bit, and push the hair out of her face. He kissed her, and he picked her crutch up afterwards. The two sat down to eat breakfast. Not long after Ren sat back down Izumi looked up and cleared her throat. Ren looked back to see Sesi standing in the doorway. Ren stood, leaning against her crutch for a moment. Sesi started to run toward Ren, and Ren started to hobble toward Sesi. The two hugged, and Ren felt a tear run down her face. She was so happy Sesi was okay. Ren needed Sesi to be okay for so many reasons. Ren placed her foot on the ground, wincing in pain. She threw her crutch on the floor, and tried to stand. She started to fall a little but Hope grabbed her. Ren smiled up at the armadillo lion. There was a knock at the doorway and everyone looked up. The world leaders stood there, and smiled at Ren. Ren motioned for them to take a seat. Everyone started to eat, and Ren could see they were avoiding a conversation. She used her airbending to throw a piece of fruit at her grandfather. He looked at her for a moment before he looked back down at the newspaper.
She picked another piece of fruit up and threw it at him. He growled and clutched the paper a bit tighter. Bumi and Kya laughed as Ren threw another piece of fruit at Tenzin. Tenzin slammed the paper on the table, sending an air blast across the table. Ren glared at him for a moment, but he didn't say anything. Ren knew they weren't telling her something. She looked at Ekta, and Ryuu. She knew someone would break eventually. Ren slammed her fists against the table in anger. She stood, and started to walk to the courtyard as fast as she could. She started to send air blast everywhere in hopes she would calm down. She eventually heard people in the courtyard so she turned around. Tenzin cleared his throat, and looked at Ren.
"Ren, sweetheart. Ekta, Ryuu and I have been thinking. We thought maybe it would be best to put the ceremony off for a few days. With Aki attacking you a few times then your team it might be a little risky. We also have to take into account that you, and Sesi are still a little weak. It will only be a few more days," Tenzin said.
Ren stared at her grandfather, and world leaders for a minute. She felt rage start to build up inside of her. She clenched her fist tight and took a deep breath. She started to run toward them in anger. Gopan ran toward her. He grabbed her, and knocked her to the ground. Ren struggled to get up, but Gopan pushed down harder. Ren took a deep breath, and blew a strong air gust at Gopan. As Gopan flew in the air Ren used airbending to propel herself up. She stared at Tenzin before she pulled water out of the fountain and made water tentacles. She stomped her good foot on the ground, making two large rocks come from the ground. She used the water tentacles to turn the rocks to pebbles. She used her airbending to propel herself in the air. She used her metal cables to hit the ground, making it shake before she pulled herself down. She used her firebending, and made it spiral around her whole body. She slammed her arms down, making the fire vanish. She stood there and looked at everyone.
"Do I look weak to you? Your answer better be no. I am strong, and Aki doesn't scare me. Everyone should go into the positions they are suppose to go into. Plus, you don't have much color in your beard left Grandpa Tenzin. This job has stressed you out for entirely too long. Lin has done it for a long time too. The other world leaders had put up with a lot of shit, and I'm sure you all want to enjoy your lives without being pulled into the office all the time when the world needs you. To be honest I want to get you guys out of there. You all drive me nuts," Ren said.
Tenzin huffed, and pointed at Ren. Lin started to shake her head, and chuckled a bit. Ren had a point. The world leaders were getting too old. Tenzin looked back at Lin, she shrugged.
"The kid has a point. We are too old for this shit. Now there is a new threat. We also have to think about the fact Aki is related to Azula, Ozai, Sozin. That is a whole boat of crazy. They were ruthless, and didn't care who they hurt. I can tell you right now I think Aki will be the same way. I have dealt with enough crazy. It is time for me to retire. I don't need to deal with this shit. Tenzin take a step back, and let the younger generation deal with it. Ekta, Tonraq, Desna, Ryuu, you should follow suit. If you have this ceremony tomorrow or not I am still retiring tomorrow. I deserve it, and Sky deserves his new position. Aki isn't going to wait for us, so I'm not going to wait for her," Lin said.
Ren looked at Lin for a minute and smiled. She ran over to Lin, and hugged her. Lin raised an eyebrow, and looked down at Ren. She pushed Ren back a bit before she slammed her foot on the ground. Now it was Ren's turn to raise her eyebrow. Ren saw the shock on Lin's face. Su stomped her foot, and Ren watched as the sisters looked at each other. Ren looked at them, but they didn't say anything. Lin looked back at Sky then at Ren again.
"You're pregnant," Lin said.
Ikki screamed with excitement. Ren stared at Lin for a minute. Jinora started to talk to Ren, but she only saw her lips move. Ren blinked, and looked at her mother again. Ren's legs started to give out, but Sky caught her. Ren didn't know what to do. She was the avatar. How was she going to fight Aki while pregnant? Ren pulled away from Sky, and ran into the temple. She grabbed her glider before she ran back out. She took off toward the city, and didn't look back. She made her way for the Spirit World. She was about to land when she saw Aki. She flew into the Spirit World, and over to the grove. She landed, and dropped her glider. She turned to see everyone drinking tea. She sensed Aki coming, and got into her fighting stance. The group looked at her over their tea. They jumped up when they saw a fireball headed their way. Ren hit it with the tips of her fingers. She shook her hand, and blew on her fingers a bit. Aki walked into the grove laughing. Ren wanted to slap her, but she stood where she was.
"I guess it's true what they say. The avatar is the bridge between both worlds. You must have sensed your precious spirits in danger. I wonder how you did it. I hope they are worth your life though," Aki said.
"Bring it. I'll end your life in the Spirit World, " Ren said.
Aki sent a fireball at Ren, but Ren jumped. Ren started to run for the tree line as fast as she could. Aki shot another fireball at Ren, but Ren grabbed a tree branch to pull herself up. Ren felt the heat from the fireball pass her as she tried to pull herself up the tree branch. Ren managed to get into the tree, but Aki was running toward the tree line. Ren used her airbending to jump from branch to branch. Aki sent a fireball at Ren, and Ren sent her own. The two fireballs collided, causing an explosion. The two women were knocked back. Ren slid off of the tree, and hit the ground with a thud. She pushed herself up, and pulled out her cables. She grabbed Aki, and slammed her into a tree. Aki propped herself up and sent a strong fire blast at Ren. Ren put an earth barrier up, but it didn't help. Ren started to get up when Aki hit her with another fire ball. Ren grabbed the ground, making it shake. Cracks started to form, and go in Aki's direction. Aki jumped before the earth split beneath her. Ren kicked a gust of air at Aki, knocking her down. Aki stared at Ren before she sent multiple fire balls for Ren to dodge. When Ren looked at Aki she was generating lighting. Aki shot the lighting at Ren. Ren didn't even remember redirecting the lighting. She only knew she saw Aki standing there. Ren sent her metal cables at Aki, but she moved. Aki now had Ren's cables in her right shoulder. Ren pulled the cable, making Aki come forward a bit before it was pulled out. Aki raises her arm, but puts it back down. Aki stares at Ren before she starts to run for the portal. Ren fell to her hands and knees. She started to cry. Ren felt someone touch her, and she pushed them away. She felt the person touch her again.
"Stop! Just Stop! I'm fine okay! I'm... I'm just frustrated," Ren said.
"I understand. Lord Zuko, and I both have been betrayed before. When it is family it hurts even more. I know you looked up to Aki," Korra said.
"No, you don't understand. I feel like I'm going to destroy a friendship that was built generations ago. I don't have to worry about Aki hurting me solely. I'm pregnant. If she finds that out she will do whatever she can to destroy our family. I already know what Aki wants right now. She wants me," Ren said.
Toph walked over to Ren, and slapped her. Ren sat down, and looked at Toph. Ren thought about how Toph was chief while pregnant, so she could be avatar while pregnant. Ren got up, grabbed her glider and hugged Toph. Toph pushed her back, and Ren smiled. She opened up her glider as she ran for the portal. Ren made her way for City Hall. She landed on the steps and looked down. She closed her eyes, and pictured all the times she had been at these steps. Tomorrow would be one of the biggest days in Republic City. She walked into the building, and up to her grandfather's office. She saw he had already cleaned out his office. She decided it was probably best to head back to the island and stay there until tomorrow. Ren landed at the island, and she overheard the world leaders saying how she was right. Ren ran in and hugged Tonraq, and Tenzin. She told them they were the best, and left again. Tenzin shook his head as he watched Ren run out the room. Ren ran into the kitchen to find Jinora, Kya, and Pema. Jinora ran over to her and hugged her before she placed her hands on Ren's face. Ren saw the concern on her mother's face, but she gave her a reassuring smile. Ren started to feel tired, and she grabbed Jinora's arm for a moment. Ren let go of Jinora and started to walk to her room. When she opened the door, she saw Hope and Sky both snoring. She smiled and shook her head. She thought about how the last couple days had been long and tiring. It was lunch time and the three of them were already in bed. She closed her eyes, and fell asleep. Ren woke up early in the morning before anyone else. She walked into the courtyard, and stared across the bay. She heard someone coming and she turned around. She saw Lee walking into the courtyard. Ren turned back around. Ren thought about the ceremony and how there would be a big change.
Later in the afternoon the world leaders, Lin and Tenzin stood with Ren in City Hall. Ren watched as they all talked, and laughed. A small group walled into City Hall, and stood next to the world leaders. Ren gestured at the door, and they all walked out onto the steps of City Hall. Ren saw the large group of reporters in front of City Hall. She saw her friends, and family. She even saw a few citizens from Republic City. Everyone, but Ren took a seat. Ren took a step towards the podium, but hesitated on the next step. She looked at the world leaders for a moment before she finished walking up to the podium. She looked up and cleared her throat.
"Hello. We are here today, because it is time for the people who won in the elections to be placed in office. We will start with the Air Nation. The Air Nation doesn't have a voting system, but taking my grandfather's spot at City Hall will be my brother Lee. We now go to Republic City. Sesi will be taking Ekta's spot as president of Republic City. Moving on to the Chief of the Police Force. Chief Lin Beifong will be replaced by Sky Befiong, making him the first chief of Republic City to be a waterbender. Now to the Earth Republic. Kuvira had finished out Kanan's time as president, and has been chosen again by the people to represent the people. For the Fire Republic we have Akane who will try and fill her father's footsteps as president. Chief Tonraq of the Southern Water Tribe will be replaced by Kesuk. Desna of the Northern Water Tribe will be stepping down and stepping up in his place will be Aningan. I would like to congratulate the world leaders that won the elections, and I look forward to working with all of you. To the world leaders, and Chief Beifong it was an honor to work with all of you. We will gladly take any questions now," Ren said with a smile.
"I have one. Don't you find it to be a conflict of interest to not only be working with my sister, but your brother and husband?" Aki asked as appeared in the crowd.
The crowd looked at Ren to see how she would answer. Ren looked at Aki's shoulder, and saw the bandages. Ren lit a small flame in her hand, but kept it hidden. Aki smiled before she threw a fireball at Ren. Ren did a cartwheel, and the fireball hit the building. The reporters, and citizen of Republic City started to flee. Ren sent a chunk of earth at Aki, but Aki sent a fire blast. The chunk of earth broke into pieces. Aki sent multiple fire blast at Ren and Sky jumped in front of Ren dragging a water whip in front of the two. They were both knocked back, and down to the ground. Lee sent an air blast, but it missed. Aki knocked Lee down with a fire blast. Sesi stood in front of Aki with two water whips. Aki sent fire balls at Sesi, but Sesi used her water whips to knock them away. Aki swept her foot close to the ground sending a slice of fire at Sesi. Sesi fell to the ground with a thud. Ren jumped up, and stared at Aki. Aki looked up and shot a bolt of lightning at one of the earth columns at City Hall. Ren turned around as the building started to shake a little, and the column started to fall toward her. She stomped her foot, and raised her arms to raise the earth to make a new column, Kuvira, and Lin sent their cables as fast as they could to crush the column. There were still large chunks heading toward Ren even after the column was broken up. Ren finally got the column of earth up. She turned around, and covered her head right before the chunks of earth fell on her. Everyone looked at the rumble in horror. Aki took everyone's shock as a chance to run away. They watched the pile of rubble, and hoped Ren could get herself out. They soon saw the rocks move a little, and Ren appear. She had only pushed the rubble before she passed out. Kuvira, Lee, Lin, Sesi, Sky, and Tenzin all ran over to her. Kuvira, and Lin looked at the rocks before they started lifting them. Sky ran up to Ren, and lifted her up. Everyone saw the blood on Ren's head. Kya, Sesi, Sky, and Tenzin got on a sky bison with Ren.
They took off immediately and, left everyone behind. Sky brushed the hair out of Ren's face, trying to keep it out of the blood. He pulled water out of the pouch, and placed it over her head. He pulled Ren closer to him, hoping she would be okay. When they landed they all jumped down, and ran into the healing rooms. Sky placed Ren on a bed, and he left with Tenzin. Kya and Sesi started to work on Ren right away. Kya, and Sesi looked at each other after a while before they walked out of the room. Everyone else was back on the island by the time the two women came out. Kya and Sesi looked at them for a moment.
"How is she?" Jinora asked.
"She... She will be okay but..."Kya trailed off.
"But what?" Sky asked.
"When the rubble collapsed on Ren she was able to somehow keep herself protected. Well for the baby it is a different story. When Kya, and I were working on her we noticed that... We didn't sense the baby at all. I mean she was pregnant, but Sky I'm sorry the baby must have gone into distress from the fight. The baby didn't make it," Sesi said.
Sky stared at Sesi for a moment before he walked away. Lin tried to grab him, but he pulled away. He walked down to the beach, and started to bend the water in the bay. The water in the bay started to become very large waves. Sky turned around when he heard footsteps. Jinora, Kai, Lin, Su, and Tenzin walked down the stairs. He stared at them with a blank expression before he felt a tear go down his cheek. Su gave him a half smile. Sky fell to his knees, and covered his face. He started to cry, but Lin grabbed his arm. She pulled him up, and hugged him. Everyone looked at the woman in shock. Sky grabbed Lin and began to cry harder. Kya walked down the stairs and cleared her throat. She motioned for everyone to follow her. She told Sky to go into the healing room. Before Sky walked into the room he wiped his face in hopes Ren wouldn't be able to tell he was crying. He walked in to see Ren sitting up. He walked over and sat down before he kissed her. He closed his eyes and thought about how he was going to tell her.
"Ren, I have to tell you something. When you were fighting Aki, something happened. Ren, when all of the rubble collapsed on you something happened to the baby. Sesi, and Kya said there is no more baby Ren..." Sky said.
Ren stared at Sky for a moment before she pulled her hand away from his. She pushed him away before she threw the glass of water next to her at him. He moved in time for it to smash against the wall.
"You're lying! It's not true! I can protect anyone! If Toph could do it as chief I can do it as avatar! It's a lie! Get out! Leave me alone!" Ren screamed as she started to cry.
Sky looked at her before he opened the door to leave. When he closed the door, he found Jinora, Kai, and Lin standing there. Kai placed his hand on Sky's arm before he led him to the kitchen. Sky stopped for a moment before he turned around. He went to his, and Ren's room on the island. No one had heard a word from Sky or Ren the rest of the night. Ren had locked herself in the healing room, and Sky locked himself in his room. Lin knocked on Sky's door with no answer, and Jinora knocked on the healing room door with the same response. Everyone gave up for the night, and hoped they would at least hear from one of them the next morning.
