Book four Peace Chapter Eleven: Home Invasion
Ren had convinced Sky to let them stay at the island for a few days but didn't tell him why. Sky was at the Police Headquarters for the day and Ren was at the island with Hakoda. She knew that they couldn't hide on the island forever. She thought maybe they could call the White Lotus for protection. She knew that she hated them but at this point it was for the protection of her son. She thought maybe even a few of the officers could protect Hakoda instead. She felt Hope push on her back and she turned around. She knew Hope would help protect the three. Ren sighed as she walked into the courtyard. She saw Hakoda with his bags and she raised an eyebrow.
"Hakoda, sweetheart what are you doing?" she asked.
"I'm going home. I love staying with Gran-Gran Jinora and Grandpa Kai but I miss my room at our house," Hakoda said.
Ren sighed before she spoke. "How about I make you a deal? We will go home tonight if we go spend the day with Daddy and we go home when he goes home or close to the time he does," she said.
Hakoda thought about what Ren said for a minute before he nodded. Ren smiled before she went to go get her things. She let everyone on the island know that they would be leaving for the night. Ren placed Hakoda on Hope's back so they could walk down to the ferry. Once on the ferry Hakoda jumped off of Hope's back and ran to the front of the ferry. He began to bend the water from Yue Bay. Ren flashed back to when she was younger and would do the same thing. Ren smiled and was so caught up in her thoughts she never knew that they arrived at the docks. Hakoda began to tug on her sleeve, snapping her out of her thoughts. Hope stuck her head under Hakoda and put the small boy on her back. The group walked to their destination and talked about what they would do when they got home later that night. When they walked in the building Lieutenant Kalli waved to them and Hakoda ran over to say hi to Mako. Hakoda knocked a few of Mako's papers on the floor and started to make a mess. Sky opened his door to find out what all the commotion was about. He shook his head when he saw Ren, Hakoda, and Hope standing in the lobby. Ren gave him a smirk before she helped Mako pick up his things. Ren ushered Hope and Hakoda into Sky's office before the two could make a mess of anything else. Sky gave Ren a concerned looking, hoping nothing was wrong.
"Ren, is everything okay?" he asked.
"Oh, yea everything is fine. Hakoda just wants to go home and frankly so do I. I would prefer to go home when you go home though. Let's get you away from all of this," Ren said.
"I'm sorry Ren but it is going to be a shift that last until tomorrow," Sky said with half a smile.
Ren gave him half a smile before she looked back at Hakoda. She promised that if they came to see Sky, they would go home so she couldn't go back on her word. She nodded at Sky as she reached for the door knob but Sky grabbed her hand. He kissed her forehead to make sure she was feeling okay before he let the three leave. Ren feared what could happen tonight if it was just her alone with Hakoda. The three soon arrive at their home and Ren found that nothing had been touched. Ren placed her things in her room and Hakoda's in his. She looked in the fridge to see that there was nothing that she could make. She started to dig through the drawers for a take-out menu. She ordered their dinner for the night and told Hakoda to take a bath while they waited. Ren sat on the couch and closed her eyes. She sat up and gasped when there was a pounding at the door. She slammed her foot on the floor to see the delivery person on the other side. She grabbed the yuans off the table and answered the door. Once she paid the delivery person she closed and locked the door. She called for Hakoda and the two sat to eat. Ren sat in silence as she listened to her son talk the whole meal. Hakoda told Ren he was going to play in his room and Ren sat at the table to finish her meal. Ren cleaned up the kitchen and whistled for Hope. The two went upstairs to Hakoda's room to tell him to go to bed. When she opened the door she saw he was already asleep. She went into her room and changed into her pajamas slowly when she felt Hope nudge her. She looked down and started to pet her as she sat on the bed. Ren turned off the light and was soon asleep. She never heard anyone outside the house but when Hakoda got up to go to the bathroom he noticed them. He quickly ran over to Ren but made sure he wouldn't be seen. He started to shake her shoulder and she soon woke. Ren propped herself up and looked at him.
"Mommy, I think someone is trying to get in. I saw someone outside when I got up to go to the bathroom," Hakoda said, rubbing his eyes.
Ren sat up and grabbed Hakoda, looking for a place to hide him. She knew that there was someone outside and that they weren't going to stay outside long. Ren looked at her closet and knew that was the only place she could hide him. She opened the door and started to push things aside as fast as she could. She sat Hakoda down and crouched down in front of him. She could see how scared he looked so she smiled at him.
"Hakoda, I need you to listen to me very carefully. Some very bad people are trying to get into the house. Mommy is going to hide you from them and try to protect the house like she protects the world. I need you to be very quiet so they don't hear you. If I do not come back do not come looking for me. Only yell or make noise if you hear someone like Daddy, Grandma Lin, Aunt Kuvira, or Gran- Gran Jinora. I need you to understand that. I will leave a hint for Daddy that you are here that only he will know," Ren said.
Hakoda nodded before Ren used her earthbending to cover Hakoda. Ren started to cover the earth and placed a mark near it that she knew Sky would get if she didn't come back. Ren opened the door to see Hope roaring at the front door. Ren used her airbending to slide down the railing before Aki and Azula busted through the front door. Ren used her waterbending to pull water out of the sink. Ren froze the water and sent the shards at the two but Azula melted them and Aki knocked Ren down with a fire blast. Ren fell against the table and when she looked up, she saw traid members arriving. She cursed under her breath before she sent a gust of wind at the group. She tried to avoid the chunk of earth that was thrown at her but it knocked her into the kitchen. Hope tried to help but with multiple attacks was knocked down easily. Ren pulled a chunk of earth out of the wall and knocked Aki down. Aki grew angry and shot a flame at Ren. Ren dodge it and ran towards Aki, knocking her into the wall. The triad member that could waterbend used his bending to pull Ren off of Aki and threw her across the room. Ren used her metalbending to try and knock Azula down but she missed. Azula ran and kicked Ren into the dining area. Ren stayed on the floor as the group approached her, hoping that her idea would work. When they got close enough Ren jumped up and raised her hands which raised the ground, making the group fall. Ren went to attack again but was hit by a chunk of earth. She flew into the table, smashing it. Ren tried to push herself up but she fell. Ren felt the weight of the smashed table on her start to get heavier. Aki, Azula, and the traid members walked over to Ren as she tried to push off the ground one more time. Aki laughed at Ren as she fell to the ground and reached out to Hope. Ren's hand dropped as she started to lose consciousness. Aki shook her head at Ren as she looked around the house. She ordered one of the traid members to grab Ren and told them that they were going to leave. Once they grabbed Ren and left it was nothing but a waiting game for Hakoda. He pulled his legs close to his body and waited for someone to come let him out. At Police Headquarters Mako received the call about the Beifong residence and as Sky's neighbor continued to talk Mako looked at Sky's door. Mako thanked the man and started to walk towards Sky's office. He knocked on the door but when he didn't get an answer, he opened the door. Mako saw that the world leaders were sitting across from Sky and he gulped before he spoke.
"Chief, I don't mean to interrupt but I received some information that is very urgent. One of your neighbors reported seeing someone break into your house. They heard a fight but they don't know how it ended," Mako said.
Everyone turned their attention to Mako then Sky. "Ren and Hakoda went home tonight. It had to be Aki and Azula. Mako I need you to gather as many officers as possible. I also need you to call Air Temple Island and have Jinora, Kai, Kya, my mother, and the rest of team avatar meet me at my house. Mako I also want you there. Kuvira, Lee, and Sesi, I would appreciate if you would come. I have no clue how bad this is. I don't know if they took Hakoda or Ren. I don't know if they injured them and they just need healers or if they are..." Sky began to trail off as he feared the worse.
Kuvira placed her hand on Sky's hand as she smiled. Mako nodded before he did what Sky had asked him. The remaining four had left and waited until everyone had gathered near the Beifong home. Sky had gone first but when he went to open the door he saw that it was already open. He looked back at everyone and he felt a hand on his shoulder. He looked to see Kai with half a smile. Sky pushed the door and his eyes widened while his mouth dropped. He looked around at the huge mess Aki, Azula, Ren, and the traid members had made. He saw Hope on the ground near the stairs, still unconscious. He stepped in the house and everyone followed him. He was still in shock from what he was seeing. Everyone was slowly trying to take in the damage and they all looked at Sky.
"Raava Ren, what happened here? I hope you and Hakoda are okay," Sky said.
Sky walked over to Hope and tried to wake her. When he knew he wasn't going to ger anywhere he ordered a few of his officers to move her out of the way. Everyone began to search upstairs and call for Hakoda and Ren. Sky was beginning to lose hope that the two were even in the house. He walked into his and Ren's room and picked up the picture on his dresser. He began to silently cry and he slammed his fist into Ren's closet. Lin, Kuvira, Jinora, and Kai came running in to see if everything was okay. Sky set the picture down but when he looked up he saw a marking on the wall. He ran his hand over the marking before he opened the closet and started pushing things around. He started yelling for Hakoda as he moved the things but he didn't see him. Sky knew Ren put that mark on the wall for a reason and that would be the only reason Sky could think she would put it there. The four looked at Sky like he had lost his mind but then they heard a noise. Hakoda started to pound on the earth and call for Sky. Sky motioned for Lin or Kuvira to come help him. Lin walked over to see that there was a small hideout. When she pulled the earth away, they found a scared Hakoda. Hakoda ran over to Sky and hugged him as tight as he could. Sky stood, still hugging Hakoda as tight as he could. Mako was now in the doorway, looking at Sky. When Sky looked up Mako shook his head and Sky knew that they didn't find Ren. Sky kissed the top of Hakoda's head and wondered how he was going to get him out of the house without seeing the mess downstairs. Sky knew he wasn't going to be able to hide it from him because he was a smart boy. Sky looked down to see Hakoda looking up at him. He gave the small boy half a smile.
"Daddy, where is Mommy? Is she okay?" Hakoda asked.
"I don't know," Sky said as he looked out the window.
In a warehouse on the far side of Republic City Aki, Azula and the traid members had tied Ren up with cloth, rope, and then they placed metal over her feet and hand before placing platinum on them. Aki kicked Ren before she left the room. Ren rolled on her side as a tear rolled down her cheek. She knew at this point she was on her own. She tried to bend the platinum off of her hands but she didn't have the strength. She took a breath and though of her other options. She put her head down and closed her eyes when she heard the door open. She heard Azula and Aki tell the traid members to keep an eye on her until they got back. Once the door closed Ren looked down at her restraints again. She thought about spiritual projection. Other than leaving her body to go to the Spirit World she has never been able to do the whole spiritual projection thing. She knew she would have to concentrate as hard as she could to try and project her spirit to someone for help. She tried to focus but no matter how hard she tried she couldn't do it. She began to silently cry as she thought about how she was running out of options. She wished Hope were here but she didn't think calling out for her spirit guide quite worked like that in a time of need.
"Hope, if you can hear me girl, I could really use your help right about now. I am in a warehouse on the far side of Republic City. Oh Spirits, Grandpa Tenzin, Korra, great Grandpa Aang, someone please I need help. I can't do this," Ren said.
Tenzin heard his name and looked around. He didn't see Ren but he knew by the way she sounded she was upset. Tenzin stood and walked away from the group. He felt someone grab his arm and he looked back to find his parents and Korra. He knew that his father had something to say by the look on his face. Tenzin pulled his arm away from his father's grasp before any of them could speak. He already knew what they were going to say. That Ren is the avatar and should be dealing with this issue and they are spirits and should remain in or around the Spirit World. He looked at them one more time before he vanished to help Ren. He saw that they were in a warehouse and Ren was shackled with tears in her eyes. When he went to wipe the tears out of her eyes Ren looked at him with a smile. Tenzin looked around before he told her the plan. Ren nodded and saved her strength until help arrived. She thanked her grandfather as he vanished. Tenzin appeared at the Police Headquarters where everyone was in Sky's office. First Tenzin whispered in Hakoda's ear what to do and say. He told Hakoda what he was going to do and that he needed his help. Tenzin used his airbending to blast a marker and the map together, marking the spot where Ren was being held. Hakoda soon ran in as Sky was picking the map up and pointed at the small mark on the map.
"That's where Mommy is. Grandpa Tenzin told me that he saw her there. She is really hurt and needs help really bad," he said.
Everyone looked at the small boy before they grabbed their things and left. Sky looked back at Hakoda and ran to him. He kissed the top of his head before taking off again. Once they arrived at the warehouse they slowly made their way in unsure of what was inside. They soon were met by the traid members but they easily defeated them. The group began to call for Ren but never got an answer. They began to lose hope that Ren was still in the building but Kya walked down a path and started to yell for Lin. When Lin arrived she saw Kya with Ren in her arms with very extensive injuries. Lin used her platinumbending to get the first part of Ren's restraints off before she used her metalbending. Kya froze some water to cut the remain restraints. Ren started to groan before she opened her eyes. Ren smiled slightly at Kya as Kya pushed the hair out of her face. Ren looked around to see Lin standing near her with a concerned look. Ren looked around for Sky but didn't see him at the moment. She started to close her eyes and Lin called for Sky. Sky ran into the room as fast as he could to find Ren on the ground. He ran in and picked Ren up, soon taking off with her in his arms. Everyone finally reached Air Temple Island after what felt like a long flight on the air bison. Sky jumped down and up the stairs to the healing room as fast as he could in hopes that Ren would be okay. As Sky ran by people they stared at Ren in her severe condition. When Sky ran past Pema and Hakoda they both stood there in shock. Once Sky placed Ren in the bed he waited for Kya and Sesi. The two women soon entered the room, supplies in arm. Sky waited for them to shut the door before he looked at them. He knew Kya was about to tell him to leave but he stuck his hand up. He had to tell Kya and Sesi before he left. They had to know or they wouldn't know if there was something wrong. He looked at the ground before he looked at Ren. He knew that they had said they wanted to keep it a secret but two more people wouldn't hurt. He looked at the two women in front of him and sighed.
"I need the both of you to do me a favor. What I'm about to tell you needs to stay a secret. It cannot leave this room because only a few people know. Ren's pregnant and we didn't want to tell anyone because we didn't want everyone to worry about her. The only people that know are my family from Zaofu. Please, I am begging you," Sky said.
Kya looked at Ren then Sky and nodded. Sky hugged Kya and Sesi before he left the room. He walked into Jinora's office and looked at a picture of Ren and Jinora with Tenzin. He closed his eyes and thought about how Tenzin has always protected Ren. He should have known that even death wouldn't change that. He turned around when he heard someone walk in to see Jinora standing in the doorway. He could see that her eyes were red from crying but he didn't know what to say. Sky thought maybe he should tell everyone about Ren and then there might be a chance that there would at least be some form of happiness. Sky guided Jinora to the courtyard and started to call everyone to meet him in the courtyard. Everyone gave him a confused look as they entered the courtyard but Kuvira. She knew exactly what Sky was up to and that Ren was going to be furious when she woke up to find out that the secret was out. She walked over and began to silently argue with Sky about how he knew Ren wanted to keep it a secret but Sky told her it was also his choice. Everyone watched the two before Kai whistled. The two stopped arguing and looked at the avatar's father. Kuvira stepped away from Sky as Kai continued to give her a look. Sky sighed before he looked at everyone one last time.
"Um, let's see how to do this without you guys being mad and Ren being mad at the same time. Well before I tell you just know we weren't really hiding it from you because we didn't want you to know. Well I mean we didn't but the reason isn't what you think it is. Um... um, Ren's pregnant," Sky finally said.
Everyone looked at him with wide eyes then they looked down the hall. Sky gave them a small smile before he left the courtyard. Sky heard someone call his name but he didn't feel like talking at the moment. Sky walked down to the beach so he could look over Yue Bay like he and Ren would do before they got busy with their duties. He used his bending to make large waves out of anger. He turned around when he heard someone clear their throat to see his mother and Aunt Suyin standing at the bottom of the stairs. He sighed and turned his attention back to the bay. Su looked at him and walked over, placing her hand on his shoulder. Sky grew angry as he thought about Ren's condition so he used his bending to pull a large amount of water out of the bay. He sent it in the air with a loud whooshing noise that made everyone in the courtyard look towards the bay. When the water finally started to come it drenched everyone in the courtyard and on the beach. Lin moved her wet hair out of her face and thought about how to handle the situation. She grabbed Sky's armor and started to drag him back to the courtyard as he yelled at her. She threw him in the middle of the courtyard and he pulled some water off of the ground. She sent her cables at him and he stopped.
"Boy, you better not think about that again. You may be an adult but I am still your mother. I will beat you until you need Kya and Sesi if you don't get your shit together," Lin said.
"Well, I guess that is my cue to interrupt. Sky, I am sorry but I can't keep it a secret. I don't feel right about keeping it a secret from them. They are as fine as they can be. Ren has some broken ribs, her left shoulder had to be wrapped due to a severe injury. She has stiches down her forehead that stops at her left eyebrow, stiches on her upper lip. Her right wrist and hand are broken, her left ankle and foot are also broken. We also wrapped her right leg because she had a few lacerations that we were concerned about. She also has stitching at her hip where her platinum plate is for her hip because we had to fix it. That was one of the more difficult things for us to do but we managed to place the plate where it belonged. She is going to rest and for a while. She can't go fighting like that again for some time or who knows what the outcome will be. She is very lucky that we found her when we did. She is lucky my brother decided to leave the Spirit World to help her," Kya said as she walked towards the healing room again.
Sky watched Kya walk towards Ren's healing room and he knew he had to do something. He looked at Hakoda, remembering that night and how frightened he was when Sky found him. Sky looked at the Team Avatar and sighed. He knew what he had to do. They had to protect the world without Ren. He knew someone would protect Ren but someone had to stop Aki and Azula once and for all.
"Team Avatar, we have a new mission. Our mission is to stop Aki and Azula without Ren. I don't care how much she will object when she wakes up but you heard Kya. Ren has to rest and if she thinks she can fight Aki and Azula she will. It is our job to take them down before she gets the chance," he said as he stared at the group.
