Chapter V: As a teenager...

The next few weeks before the new term, Tsuna blazes through all the necessary requirements to survive.

Thus, Tsuna spends most of his time figuring out how to cook hamburger steak.

"Less pepper this time," He mutters under his breath as he cooks for the fourth time this week. After explaining to Nana that he really wanted (needed) to learn how to make hamburger steak, the woman gave him free reign over the kitchen.

(Apparently, hamburger steak is one of the few dishes that Nana is not familiar with, so all hopes on relying on his parallel-mother became crushed the moment they began).

Flipping the steak over after inspecting the color of the meat, Tsuna grins as he senses Takahiro approaching.

"Hamburger steak again, Nee-san?" Despite his earlier fears, Tsuna finds it relieving that Takahiro doesn't mind eating hamburger steak multiple times a week. Tsuna nods in return, focusing on his task as he adds a little fruit into the mix.

Then again, it is probably because Tsuna has made a habit of changing exactly how he cooks the steak each time that has Takahiro satisfied with the results.

Tsuna cuts up the sizzling meat into smaller pieces and flips them over one more time before separating them into two piles. Placing the two piles on top of a piece of toasted bread, Tsuna adds in an extra dash of sauce and hands one dish over to Takahiro.

"Buon appetito, Taka-chan!" Tsuna beams as he watches his twin wolf down the food like there's no tomorrow. Stretching his slightly sore back, Tsuna picks up the other dish (packed up into a small bento) and gets up to leave.

Takahiro frowns as he watches Tsuna put on his orange sneakers and tug at his longer-than-normal locks.

(Unfortunately, due to his busy schedule, Tsuna has had no time to cut his own hair, and has just taken to hastily tie the slightly long locks into a messy low-ponytail).

"Going somewhere, Nee-san?" Tsuna smiles softly and gestures towards the bento in his hands.

"To the middle school, Taka-chan." Tsuna tugs again, uncomfortable, and his own hair before righting himself. "Hibari-senpai is having an introductory meeting for all new committee members, and I want to see if I got the hamburger steak right."

Takahiro took a moment to look properly scandalous.

"But your hamburger steaks are the best! Who wouldn't like them?" And then the boy scowls before turning away. "B-But you'll be back soon, right? 'Cause if you aren't, I'll find Hibari-san and – "

Here, Takahiro deflates slightly and mumbles incoherently the rest of his sentence, fully aware that he can't really do anything to the prefect.

Tsuna chuckles and replies,

"Don't worry, Takahiro," His twin looks up and scowls again, but there is less tension in his shoulders. "I'll be fine."

"You better be, Nee-san."

o-o-o-o-o-

Tsuna takes time to look around the freshly minted committee room, ignoring all the curious stares in favor of soaking in the feeling of nostalgia.

He knows he is standing out, what with his casual clothes and messily tied hair, but Tsuna does not ponder over the norm of society. Instead, he glances up and smiles at the entering prefect, with the committee uniform held grandly on top of his shoulders like a cloak.

"Your reason for joining does not matter to me," Hibari begins, not even bothering to introduce himself to the rest of the wide-eyed new recruits. "There are rules I expect you to abide, and lines that you cannot cross."

Almost lazily, the prefect glances at the solemn young man behind and merely states,

"Kusakabe."

The young man straightens his back and steps forward. Hibari in return steps back to sit on his far-to-comfortable-looking chair to appraise the rest of the room as Kusakabe takes over the introductions and regulations of the Disciplinary Committee.

Tsuna listens curiously to Kusakabe with half an ear and looks around at the other boys around him. Most of them look far too old to attend middle school, while others look quite intimidated, despite their yankee looks.

It looks like Hibari has quite a number of connections.

" – And if you have any more questions, feel free to ask me, or any of the your other fellow committee members." Nobody bothers to question if Hibari counts in that group, because they all cherish dearly their lives.

After a few more nods and questions they close the meeting, as quickly as it started, and soon, Tsuna finds himself the only occupant of the room besides Hibari and Kusakabe.

"Is there anything else you needed?" Kusakabe's eyes are kind as he asks with an intimidating face and Tsuna smiles inwardly with fondness. Tetsuya had always been one of the kinder prefects in his middle school life.

Tsuna shakes his head and brings forth the bento confidently up to Hibari's desk.

"I was wondering if you could tell me what you thought, Hibari-senpai," Tsuna pauses before adding in, just in case. "Before our deal starts officially."

Hibari glances suspiciously at the bento before smoothly unwrapping it. The two ignore a gaping Kusakabe in favor of the hamburger steak in front of them. In a matter of minutes, Hibari cleans the bento and a battle of wills commences as neither Tsuna nor Hibari is willing to back down.

"Less salt, Sawada," Hibari allows after an agonizing (on Kusakabe's part) few minutes of silence.

"… Less salt it is," Tsuna reluctantly gives, and cleans up the bento into a neat, little case again.

Nodding at a satisfied Hibari and again at a soulless Kusakabe, Tsuna leaves the middle school with a slight skip in his step.

Those weeks of experimenting really did pay off.

o-o-o-o-o-

Two days before the new term starts, Tsuna finds himself prodding himself in front of a mirror in his room.

"They got bigger," He whispers shakily out loud, in the eerie silence of his room. Poking blankly at the mounds of flesh on his chest, Tsuna holds back a sob as they hung there, as if it was their right to be there.

Maybe refusing to go shopping for womanly things with Nana wasn't such a good idea.

Then maybe they would have stopped growing.

Straightening up, Tsuna grabs a roll of bandages and proceeds to wrap layer upon layer across his chest. He ignores the tight, uncomfortable feeling the bandages bring and instead puts back on his clothes.

There is no utter doubt about it. Tsuna can hedge and hodge and deny all he wants, but he is gradually growing into a young woman.

And the most horrific thing is that (besides the breast issue), Tsuna isn't too sure if he minds at all anymore.

Four years with a male mentality in a female's body has drawn Tsuna thin, and it was not until last month that Tsuna has really began to question himself.

Who is he really?

The thirty-old Vongola Boss with power at the snap of his fingers and comrades that he would fight to the death for?

Or the fourteen year-old Sawada Tsunayoshi, older sister to the lovable Takahiro, with tentative friends and a bright future ahead of her?

But Tsuna, in true fashion of a man-woman-human when overwhelmed, pushes the issue to the side and focuses instead of the future in front of him.

There is a future ahead of him that he is vaguely aware of, and regardless of his complaints, this is the life he has chosen.

He can't back out of in now – woman or man, Tsuna is not a coward, and he knows that he can only move forward; the answer will come to him later.

Tying neatly his shoulder-length hair into a low ponytail, Tsuna laughs briefly at the memory a month ago, of Nana trying to teach him about hair ties and how to tie a hair.

Shaking his head, Tsuna straightens up once more, and pats his chest firmly before heading downstairs.

Yes, I am a girl, and yes, I think like a man.

But regardless of how I act, I am still Sawada Tsunayoshi. These memories of my past and future, these memories of the present and now, I will hold onto them as my strength. For they are what makes me who I am.

He can only hope to not falter in the future.

o-o-o-o-o-

After dropping off Hibari's first bento-of-the-year, Tsuna takes the time to reacquaint himself with the walls of Namimori-chu, under the guise of patrolling the grounds. It is only a matter of time before the morning assembly starts, and Tsuna sighs, touching the walls once again in nostalgia.

And then he leaves, heading to an irate Takahiro – who is quite upset at waking up to find no sister, and thus having to walk by himself this morning.

o-o-o-o-o-

"Next, Sawada Takahiro."

Tsuna turns to look away from the budding flowers outside and smiles as his brother stands. The boy is rough in his motions, almost knocking the chair behind him down, but they are all filled with confidence.

"My name is Sawada Takahiro, but people usually just call me Hiro. Hope we can get along."

Takahiro finishes his introduction almost arrogantly, but the rest of the class simply twitters as the boy flops back into his seat.

"Hey, it's Sawada Takahiro – didn't he singlehandedly win the soccer tournament in Tokyo last year?"

"Kyaaa! He's so cool!"

"I heard he came to Namimori Middle because the principal begged him to come!"

But Takahiro doesn't even preen at these praises, instead scanning around the classroom for a specific face. Tsuna can't help but smile brightly as Takahiro's gaze meets with his own, and Tsuna airily waves his hand to reassure the boy.

Don't worry. I'm fine.

It is probably due to fate that Tsuna lands in the far back of the classroom, with Takahiro near the front, when the rush of students went past them at the beginning of class.

And though the boy scowls back in return, Tsuna can see his twin's shoulders relaxing a fraction before the boy answers a question the girl next to him asks.

"Ah, thank you, Sawada. Next, Sawada Tsunayoshi."

Whispers break out in the classroom; some are from Tsuna's old elementary schools, who are trying desperately to remember if there ever was a Sawada Tsunayoshi in their old classes; others are from different schools, who mutter to each other about the strangeness of it all.

Tsuna can understand. Twins, while rare enough in a middle school, are hardly ever placed in the same classroom. It is due to the basic elementary tactic of separating and befriending; that is, separate the child from the one who he or she is most familiar with, and they will eventually broaden their horizons to include others.

Perhaps the principal has allowed an exception for Tsuna and his brother.

Standing steadily up from his seat, Tsuna gives a quiet smile as the whispers around him break down to a still silence.

"Hello," Tsuna greets pleasantly and gives a small bow. "I am Sawada Tsunayoshi, though you can simply call me Tsuna. It is a pleasure to meet you all."

(Perhaps he is laying the introduction a bit thick, but Tsuna has learned – quite harshly actually – that first impressions are important.

As in, very, very, very, important).

Pandemonium breaks for almost a second time when Tsuna sits back down (did he just hear screaming in the background?), but this time, the teacher is more than ready to control his unruly class.

"Alright, settle down, everybody! Settle down!" Tsuna watches sympathetically as the sensei sighs in relief when the students finally quiet down. "Okay, next is…"

Shifting uncomfortably as more than one classmate turns around to stare at him, Tsuna instead tries to focus his attention on the nearly blooming sakura trees outside.

It doesn't work.

Argh, he thinks, more than just a little wary of all the stares and whispers about him. Apparently, his hopes for staying inconspicuous for the rest of his year are already looking to go down the drain.

What did I do wrong?

-o-o-o-o-o-

A mere two weeks later, the first years begin their first Home Economics class. With the simple task of cooking a pot of curry, Tsuna is not worried at the slightest about this class.

The requirement for having a group to work with for the rest of the school year, however, is slightly disconcerting. Tsuna glances at an already worried Takahiro, and he can't help but smile bemusedly at the looks of his fretful twin.

Takahiro, as Tsuna has already suspected, fits right in to Namimori's school society. As a regular of the soccer team and academically placed in the top ten, Takahiro has students flocking to him in spades. People are just drawn into the kid's boyish, arrogant charm.

Tsuna, however, has no real interest in making friends in the middle school.

Up until now, he had never really considered his future. It was only, survive till the next week. But if Tsuna thinks long-term, he realizes he probably will not gain any true friends in middle school. The children are – for a lack of better words – too shallow when compared to what Tsuna is familiar with.

Tsuna is familiar with close-knit bonds; friendships that will last till death, trust so inseparable and faith so unshakable that they were all closer than blood.

Tsuna has already had a taste, a life of those kinds of bonds, and when compared with that, Tsuna knows that he will not fit in properly with the rest of the children here.

So, after two weeks of realizing this, Tsuna quickly finds himself – not isolated, but left alone. People – both girls and boys – stare interestedly in Tsuna's direction, but his aura is enough to abate the most curious of children.

That is, until now.

"Sawada-san," Tsuna looks up from his decision on whether to join Takahiro's or not and stiffens imperceptibly. "Would you like to join our group?"

There are sparkles floating all around her as her eyes speak nothing but innocence and curiosity.

Tsuna glances at the smirking black-haired girl a little way back and laughs sincerely, in nostalgia and no little amount of shock.

"Of course, Sasagawa-san," Tsuna smiles and relaxes completely; Kyoko always did have that effect on him. Even when their romantic relationship slowly died away like a single ember in the night, their platonic relationship and love for each other never faltered. Kyoko was always – and will always be – one of his closest friends. "I would be glad to join your group."

The orange-haired girl smiles happily in return.

"That's great!"

o-o-o-o-o-

In a matter of minutes, both Kyoko and Hana come to realize that Sawada Tsunayoshi could cook alone and still get a hundred for the rest of the group.

The kid moved effortlessly, chopping carrots and potatoes without even looking down and holding a casual conversation with Kyoko at the same time.

Kurokawa Hana blinks before smirking.

"So, Sawada," She begins casually, and her smirk widens even further as the kid cautiously looks up from her pot of curry. "There have been rumors floating around, and I just wanted to make sure…"

"And they are, Kurokawa-san?" Sawada is unfailingly polite, but Hana has her eyes on becoming a lawyer when she grows up; she knows wariness when she sees it.

"Are you a boy or a girl?" Kyoko looks up from her vegetables in shock and scolds Hana for her bluntness.

"Hana-chan! You don't go around asking people stuff like that!" Sawada raises an eyebrow in confusion and Hana takes out a black notebook from her pocket.

"There have been bets going around, Sawada," And from her peripheral vision, she can see Sawada tense in confusion. "About your true gender."

"My true gender?" Sawada laughs and Hana furrows her brow at the slight bitterness inside it. But Sawada shakes her head in amusement. "And what do you think, Kurokawa-san?"

"I think you're a girl," Hana bluntly answers, and adds in, "Kyoko thinks so, too."

"Hana-chan!" Kyoko's face flames in embarrassment as she turns to apologize to Sawada. "I'm so sorry, Sawada-chan, I didn't mean for it to offend you – "

Sawada waves off Kyoko's apology with another laugh, and Hana notes the girl relax completely in front of their presence for the first time.

"I don't mind, Sasagawa-san, and please, call me Tsuna," Sawada glances and nods at Hana to include her in as well.

Well. Hana snaps her notebook closed and grins. It seems that inviting Sawada into the group wasn't such a waste after all.

But still…

Hana gives Sawada – Tsuna, a look. The girl – Hana fervently hopes; despite her confidence, Hana has placed a lot of money into Tsuna being a girl – laughs again and confirms Hana's suspicions.

"And yes, Kurokawa-san," There it is again, a hint of bitterness; but it is gone in a flash and Hana blinks, wondering if it was even there. "I am a girl."

Kyoko squeals in delight and grabs the Tsuna's arm, insisting that the kid call her Kyoko, and Hana pipes in to give Tsuna permission as well.

Hana files away her burning curiosity on why exactly Tsuna is wearing the boy's uniform and more importantly, how, for a later date.

Tomorrow is Kyoko and her monthly date to the dessert shop three streets down, and of course, Tsuna is invited.

She has enough time to figure out the enigma that has sent the whole school into a tizzy, and if there is one thing Hana loves, it's a good mystery.

And Tsuna's crisply tied hair, the male uniform despite her true gender, and the way she smoothly walks like a predator on prowl, just screams mystery, in Hana's eyes.

Oh, and she supposes, the girl's unfailingly polite manners and snarky humor would make the girl pleasant company to have around.

o-o-o-o-o-

Tsuna shivers in pure ecstasy before blinking in shock.

"I…" The two girls in front of him grin in sympathy.

"We know."

"I think I'm in love."

"We know." The three young women pause in somber silence before picking up their forks and unabashedly, began to gorge on their sweets.

"Oh Kami," Tsuna groans as he shoves another mouthful of Chocolate Mousse Custard with strawberry filling and extra vanilla icing. "I'm going to get so fat."

He pauses and freezes in stony shock. Did he just…

"Just shut up and eat," Hana growls from the seat across from him as she takes another huge bite of her own Vanilla Cake with caramel honey and chocolate frosting. "We can regret it for the rest of our lives after."

He did.

Tsuna takes in a moment to consider Hana's surprisingly very logical and wise words before silently picking up his fork once more, and ate.

Kyoko giggles and eats delicately her own Strawberry Cupcake with chocolate chips dipped in iced honey and caramel icing sprinkled on top.

"I'm so glad you came with us," Kyoko smiles happily, and Tsuna murmurs his agreement.

They continue to eat in silence and though no own speaks a word at all, Tsuna feels a sense of complete comfortableness that, he realizes, he hasn't felt for the past four years.

Mystified, Tsuna leans back silently and wonders.

Maybe it's a girl thing?

o-o-o-o-o-

A month into the school term, Tsuna wakes up at six in the morning and gets up to prepare for his usual run around town.

Only to freeze when he passes by the window. Careful not to look outside, Tsuna stretches casually and lifts up a fantasy novel instead. He opens the book to a page and looks out the window, determinedly ignoring the tree a little way to the left. Smiling in what he hopes is serenity, Tsuna stares calmly out at the growing sunrise and dies a little inside.

He takes a few minutes to stay calm before marching to the bathroom. It's a bit too early for a normal middle student to wake up usually, but Tsuna hopes Reborn will peg it off as a female thing.

Tsuna pauses and seriously considers locking himself in the bathroom for the rest of the day.

But that would leave Takahiro to the wolves.

Sighing at his unfailing loyalty to his family, Tsuna heads for the shower and decides to forgo his daily training today.

Kami knows he'll need the extra energy.

o-o-o-o-o-

Reborn glances interestedly once again at the files in his hands.

After Nono's request to train the future Decimo, Reborn could not refuse, even if the heir is the child of that idiot Iemitsu.

And then there lies the problem. The heir.

After looking at the meager files Sawada Iemitsu has given him, Reborn knows it is not enough information. Especially for the girl.

Twins are a touchy subject when it comes to inheritance; normally, the eldest would take over, but controversy flared in Vonogola's main headquarters when it many discovered that the eldest twin was a female.

Reborn himself, of course, has nothing against female bosses. The ones he knows are unfailingly strong and courageous, despite his ingrained conscious to treat girls with chivalry and respect.

But the Mafia world in general is not as open-minded, and Nono then gave Reborn the task of finding which twin is more suitable as Decimo. If Reborn goes by the files alone, then Sawada Takahiro is a sure pick; with athletic records and high academic credence, Takahiro is certainly a shoe in when compared to his older sister's thinner files.

According to Iemitsu's files and the spies hanging around for the Sawada family's protection, Sawada Tsunayoshi does not have a bright future. Below average grades, a weak body, and an even weaker mind, apparently, Tsunayoshi is clearly not the right candidate.

But Reborn has learned the hard way that not all is what it seems, and so, ignoring Iemitsu's insistence on choosing his son over his daughter, Reborn instead decides to watch with his own eyes the Sawada twins.

And after a few hours, he decides the files are useless and burns them with his own hands.

First off, Sawada Takahiro. The files state the boy is intelligent and athletic, though with a slightly cruel streak that stemmed from Iemitsu's unintended neglect.

They are mostly correct, Reborn deems, as he spies on Takahiro for a good few hours. The boy is certainly intelligent, though lacking cleverness and creativity, and his body could use a bit more work, but Reborn feel satsifed with what he sees. He does not see a malicious streak anywhere at all, and the bullying, the spies briefly noted. towards his own sister is non-existent .

Actually, it is probably the opposite.

Sawada Tsunayoshi's files are the first ones Reborn burns in irritation, for they are not even close to accurate. A bit of snooping around reveals Tsuna as the top student in her school, both here and in the elementary school. Granted, the rise of grades was gradual, so Reborn suspects that somewhere, between now and four years ago, Sawada Tsunayoshi got her act together and took her future seriously enough that she found her own niche.

She is unfailingly polite and calm, and holds the respect of both her classmates and teachers. While Takahiro attracts people of all kinds with his charm and honesty, Tsunayoshi keeps them at bay and in awe as she holds herself with confidence beyond her years.

Hm. And that isn't even including Sawada's remarkable athletic ability. Ignoring the male uniform she continues to wear (and there lays in a can of worms he cannot wait to open for Iemitsu; imagine, his 'cute, lovely, little doll' a cross dresser; though Reborn admits, Tsuna pulls it off well), Reborn can clearly see the outlines of muscles well cared for and trained.

And there lays the problem. Who to choose, who to pick.

Well, Reborns decides decisively, it won't matter to me which one becomes Decimo because both are quite suitable.

He narrows his eyes at a thought.

Of course, it won't hurt to get a better feel of their personalities.

o-o-o-o-o-

"A home tutor, okaa-san?"

Tsuna and Takahiro look at each other in confusion, and Nana blushes embarrassedly in response. It is understandable, because both twins are the top students in their year. And with Takahiro's sports records and Tsuna's commitment to the Disciplinary Committee, they're the perfect student models Namimori has seen in a while.

Well, at least, that's what the principal claims.

"I'm sorry," But it is clearly that the apology is directed more towards Tsunayoshi, and he immediately understands that Nana must have requested for one because of Tsuna. "I asked Iemitsu-san for one before the principal told me about your grades two months ago, and I…"

Nana turns even redder, and Tsuna cannot help but smile in understanding.

"It's okay, okaa-san, I understand," And suddenly, all is better in the world as Nana gives a teary smile, and Tsuna tilts his head; never once has he seen his mother – parallel or not – ashamed of herself. Why would she start today?

"Ciaossu." Tsuna immediately holds back a wince, and whirls around to see his home tutor, alive and well, and once again, a baby.

Takahiro and Nana take a moment to stare unabashedly at the tiny baby in a suit and Tsuna takes a moment as well to admire Reborn's fine-tailored clothes. They fit his little body well, and are high quality at that.

Perhaps, Tsuna will ask Reborn later, when on more friendly terms.

Channeling his 'inner-girl' as Kyoko and Hana likes to tease him about on more than one occasion, Tsuna laughs brightly – he does not squeal mind you – and reaches forward to pick Reborn up.

The baby lets him, to Tsuna's eternal surprise, but then again, Reborn always had been polite to females in general.

So Tsuna takes advantage over this chance to squeeze Reborn tightly, letting the baby's head go over his shoulders so that he can control his raging emotions.

Reborn…

"Ah, what a cute baby!" Tsuna laughs as water forms in his eyes, but he clamps it down before anybody can see it in his eyes, or hear it in his voice.

Reborn, I missed you.

But the words in his thoughts do not escape his lips and he pushes down the sadness, the relief, the overwhelming happiness at seeing his home tutor, and instead lifts Reborn to give the baby a bright smile.

"What brings you here, child?"

o-o-o-o-o-

After the interesting hug from the girl and revealing to the twins his occupation as a home tutor, Reborn takes quick note of the disbelief on Takahiro's face and the widened eyes on Tsunayoshi's.

The two manage to duck underneath Reborn's flying kick, and the baby notes with approval that automatic defensive position both Takahiro and Tsunayoshi place themselves in.

(He highly doubts either of them has had martial arts training, but their instincts on protecting their mother and each other are commendable).

Reborn settles comfortably onto Tsunayoshi's shoulder and ignores the scowl Takahiro sends his way.

"And what are you doing, Reborn-san?" There is amusement behind Tsuna's voice, and Reborn blandly replies,

"Following you to school," Tsuna hums in acquiescence, though Reborn notes that the other twin is not as accepting.

"What? You're just a baby!" Takahiro glares in annoyance. "And how exactly can you be a home tutor anyway? You're what, five?"

"Takahiro," Tsuna states calmly, surprising Reborn from pulling out his Leon gun at the annoying kid. "Indulge the child; we can handle whatever he needs after class is over."

Tsuna then lifts Reborn of her shoulder and looks at the baby in the eye.

"Is that alright with you?"

Interesting. It seems that Tsuna has some of Giotto's famous Intuition. She recognizes that Reborn is not just a mere baby, but she is not willing to compromise her education or Takahiro's health to follow Reborn's presence blindly.

Reborn nods his head in agreement.

"Of course."

And even more interestingly enough, Takahiro does not fight back. He gives Reborn another suspicious glare before sighing in reluctance and shrugging on his bag.

"Whatever you say, Nee-san."

Tsuna smiles in return as thanks and they head off, with Reborn far too interested to even pull out the Dying Will Bullet on either twin.

It seems Reborn will have to change some plans.

"Well, Leon?" Reborn lifts the chameleon casually up to the light and smirks. "This certainly wasn't what I had expected, but I've always been adaptable."

The animal in return flicks its tongue out and Reborn hums in interest.

"It appears that this trip will be far more interesting than I had thought it would be."

FAQ:

- Will Tsuna have surgery to change his sex?

Um, no. Simply because his want to become male is not that great; plus, that kind of surgery is really expensive, and the results don't always come out positive and assured so... no.

Whoa, whoa. You shall find out soon, young grasshopper.
