April 2nd
Apollo POV
Percy had asked me to meet him at the park with the shell fountain. As soon as I entered the park and saw the son of Poseidon, I smirked. The messy black windswept hair, t-shirt, and jeans all told me I made the right choice. It still made me smile that I knew him well enough to be able to guess though. It was an interesting sensation for me. It was a nice feeling to know that I knew my boyfriend so well.
As soon as he saw me approaching, he gave me one of his blinding smiles. When I got closer to where he was waiting, it became obvious that he was nervous too. The way that he couldn't seem to decide what to do with his hands made me mentally chuckle. Somehow knowing that I wasn't the only one who was worried actually helped me relax a little.
He gave me a little wave. "Hey."
I raised an eyebrow at his attempt to sound casual. Instead of calling him out on his poor acting skills, I stepped closer and wrapped my arms around him. "I think its proper etiquette to greet your boyfriend with at least a hug, don't you?"
He didn't hesitate to wrap his arms around me in return. I was secretly thrilled when, the longer we held each other, the more I felt his shoulders unwind. It sent a pleasant buzz through my chest at the knowledge that I was the reason that he felt relaxed.
After far too short of moment, he pulled back and his smile returned, looking far less forced than before. "As nice as it is to stand here with you, we should probably be getting going." I raised a surprised eyebrow at that. Once I had realized that we weren't going somewhere extravagant, I had assumed that we would be doing something in the park. My thoughts must have been pretty clear if even the son of Poseidon could read them. He laughed at my expression. "Ya that's right. I can plan things..."
I chuckled and wrapped my arm around his shoulders. "I never said that you couldn't. Lead on my sea-prince."
ΩΩΩ
Percy POV
To say I was nervous was a pretty big understatement. I was more than a little worried that he wouldn't like what I had planned. Piper had assured me that it was romantic, but still... It wasn't anything like what he had planned for me. I couldn't stop second guessing myself. I thought about just booking a table at a restaurant, but it just didn't seem like us. Every time we hung out, we did something laid back. Yet I couldn't stop wondering if that was just because we had always hung out as friends. Maybe Apollo liked to do something different when it was a real date.
I felt the arm around my shoulders tighten and I tried to shake off my thoughts. It was too late to second guess myself now. I looked at the sun god and smiled. If nothing else, at least I wouldn't have to call him Fred.
ΩΩΩ
I had to give him credit. He was being fairly understanding about the whole wanting to keep it a surprise thing. Even when I started leading him up temple hill, he only gave me a questioning look. When I ignored the obvious request, he just shrugged and remained silent. If it was me, I would have probably asked him at least 6 times by now.
Once we reached the very top of the hill, the enormous structure that was Jupiter's temple stretched out before us. I glanced over at the son of Zeus to gauge his reaction. I couldn't help but chuckle. He was clearly not planning on saying anything, but his face said all he needed to about his opinion of our apparent destination.
"Don't worry, we're not going in."
He frowned, looking a little confused. "We're not?"
I shook my head and laughed, "Hades no! I don't want to get cursed. Isn't bringing a date into Athena's temple how my dad managed to get his girlfriend turned into a gorgon?"
It was the gods turn to chuckle, "Something like that... So if we're not going into his temple, where are we going?"
I smiled, "I'll show you."
I took the sun gods hand and led him over to a small space between Jupiter's temple and the one next to it. It was a bit of a tight squeeze but both of us managed to get through to the other side. Once we were through, I led him around the back of the line of temples and further up the hill it was built on. It was a bit of a steep climb so we couldn't really talk much. I may never have lost my breath anymore, but the same could not be said for the son of Leto. By the time the ground evened out again, we were about 60 feet above the rest of New Rome. I waited until he caught his breath before leading him the short stretch left to where we were heading.
We rounded the final rock outcropping and I stepped out of his way so that he could see it better. He didn't say a word for almost a minute and I had to break the silence or I was fairly sure I would go crazy.
"Well? What do you think?"
ΩΩΩ
Apollo POV
I was speechless. After driving the sun for so many centuries, I had grown more than a little tired of high up views of the sunset.
"Well? What do you think?"
I shook off my surprise and looked closer at my boyfriend. "Percy it's... incredible."
I turned back to take in the view again. I had thought that I'd seen everything there was to see from the sky, but this was completely different. With the light of my sun just begin its decent over the city of marble, I felt like I had been transported back to the world I was born in. Since it was a demigod city, there weren't even the overwhelming amount cars and other machines that dominated all of our ancient sites in the old world. The view was like nothing I had seen in eons. We may have still been above it, but we were also part of the world in a way that I wasn't in my chariot.
I felt the son of Poseidon wrap his arms around me from behind and rest his chin on my shoulder. We stood in silence, enjoying the view. I don't know exactly how long we stood there, but the sun was almost completely behind the horizon by the time I felt the need to sit down. The short climb had taken more out of me than I would have expected. I hadn't done a lot of hiking since my transformation. If I ever intended to reclaim Delphi, I would need to remedy that.
I was leaning down in preparation to find the most comfortable spot of stone when the youngest god laughed. He gently pulled my arm and gestured away from the edge. "You didn't really think I'd bring you all the way up here only to make you sit on the ground did you?"
I felt my brow furrow in confusion, until I glanced behind me. I had been so enthralled by the view earlier, that I hadn't noticed the rest of the rock platform. There was a thick, comfortably worn, looking blanket spread out on the ground with a few pillows thrown on top.
The son of the sea god let go of my arm and walked over to the blanket. He lay down and stuffed one of the pillows under his head before giving me a playful look. "So are you coming?"
ΩΩΩ
I smiled as I relaxed back on the blanket beside the young god. It was surprisingly peaceful back here. I could see the people walking up and down the Temple road, but no one else seemed to come back behind the buildings. It made me wonder who had shown it to Percy.
"How did you hear about this place?"
I wasn't aware I had spoken my thoughts until he shook his head. "I didn't hear about it. I found it. When Piper suggested that I take you on a date, my first thought was that it should be something special." He couldn't stop the slight blush that the admission cost him, but he didn't stop explaining. "I thought that a date outside of the city would be nice, but I didn't want to risk our first date ending in a monster attack. So then I wanted to find somewhere within the protective barrier that would be private. I asked Reyna to tell me where the borders to town were. When she showed me the map, the land back here was within the city limit. So I spent an afternoon trying to find a way to get behind the temples. The only option that I could figure out was jumping off the roof of one of the temples, which left us the question of how we'd get back into town after. Then I noticed that the space between Jupiter's temple and the one's next door was slightly bigger than normal, so I thought that it was worth a shot to see if I could fit and sure enough, I could."
I was surprised by how much thought he had put into our date. I felt an unconscious smile cross my face. I smiled and reached out to pull his lips to mine. I only held the contact between us for a moment before I pulled back just enough to rest my forehead against his. I brushed my thumb across his cheek and smiled. "You are so amazing..."
The young god blushed and reached up to run his fingers through my hair. He gave me a tentative smile. "I'm glad that you like it so far."
I shook my head and stole another kiss, only slightly longer than our last. "How could I not?"
I continued to run my thumb along his cheekbone. Of course, our romantic moment was then interrupted by my highly inconsiderate stomach, loudly announcing that I had forgotten to eat lunch. I blushed. I was still not completely use to the strange demands of a mortal form. Rather that offering to start heading back though, the son of Poseidon smiled.
"I guess that means its snack time then!"
I watched as Percy sat up, and went to grab a backpack that was sitting next to our bed. From within he pulled out a few bottled of water, a container of cherries, a bag of chips, and...
I snorted, "Really Percy? Blue Jello?"
He gave me a playful pout and then shrugged. "What's a date without something blue?" I chuckled, but I didn't even try to stop the fond feelings that rushed through me at his irrational love of all foods blue. It was one of his more endearing quirks. The son of Poseidon rubbed the back of his neck looking a little guilty. "I didn't pack a real dinner, just snacks. I hope that's okay."
I grabbed the container of cherries and gave him a smile. "It's perfect Perce."
ΩΩΩ
Between the two of us, we polished of the cherries and blue jello first. I would never say it to the son of Poseidon because I would then be overwhelmed by it, but I actually like blue jello. It was my favorite flavour.
Once the other food was consumed, Percy passed me the bag of chips with a strange look in his eye. It took me a minute to figure out why. When I burst into laughter, Percy joined in. He had found us a bag of Sun Chips to go with our blue jello.
By the time we had finished all the snacks he had brought, it was nearly dark out. I thought that the son of the sea god would suggest going back home, but he impressed me again by pulling out a couple of little camping lanterns. It seemed like he was very prepared.
I suddenly had a thought, and I looked to him in confusion. "We're not sleeping out here, are we?"
He shook his head and laughed. "No, we're just waiting for something."
I tilted my head in confusion. "Waiting for what?
He gave me a smile and cryptically said, "You'll see."
ΩΩΩ
We stayed on the rocky ledge simply talking for what had to be hours. The sun had already completely set and the stars were out, yet I still had no idea what we were waiting for.
Percy was in the middle of telling me about the first time he had used Riptide. I had always thought that the first monster the son of Poseidon had killed had been the Minotaur. Knowing that a twelve year old had managed to kill the half-man, half-bull, was impressive enough. Learning that the same twelve year old had also taken out a fury, I shook my head in disbelief. The young god was certainly one of a kind.
"The part that bothered me the most was that afterwards, it was like no one had ever heard of her. I didn't know about the mist then, so I honestly thought that the entire school was playing a prank on me for months. I was beginning to think that the whole this actually was just my imagination before..." The son of the sea god cut himself off mid-sentence and sat up. "Look! It's starting!"
I tried to follow his line of sight, but I couldn't see what he was looking at. I frowned, "What's starting?"
The son of Poseidon just shook his head and shushed me. "Just watch."
I tried to figure out what he was looking at, but I still couldn't see anything. I was just about to ask him again when I saw a flash of light cross the sky. I gasped in surprise. It was gone so fast that I wasn't even sure I had seen it. I waited perfectly still. When another one flashed across the sky a few minutes later, I knew I was right.
"It's... a meteor shower."
The son of the sea god beamed. "I know, pretty cool huh?"
I shook my head, still trying to accept it. "You... took me to see a meteor shower?"
I saw his smile fall out of the corner of my eye, but I couldn't bring myself to look away from the sky. My surveillance was rewarded with the sight of another comet.
"Is that... okay?" I was trying to find a way to put into words everything I was feeling, but apparently he thought I was taking too long. He started babbling. "I'm sorry... I thought that you'd like it. Leo told me about it when I told him I was planning some kind of picnic for us and it seemed like a fun idea. We don't have to stay. We can go. I'm sorry for..."
I finally got tired of listening to him apologize, so I silenced him with a kiss.
When I pulled back, the sun of Poseidon looked shocked. I shook my head at him. "I never said that. This is... I honestly don't even know how to tell you how much this means to me..." As the god of poetry, it wasn't often that I found myself speechless. He had clearly never heard the story before. Another meteorite flashed across the sky as I took a deep breath and begun the tale.
"I'm guessing that you don't know, but Greeks held meteorites in reverence."
The son of Poseidon still looked glum, but at least he had stopped apologizing. "They did?"
I nodded. "Yes." I didn't like the way that Percy was sitting so far away, so I grabbed his arm and gently pulled until he lay back down beside me. I rolled to my side so that I could see him and continued, "You have heard the story about how Kronos ate his kids, correct?"
Percy nodded, looking thoroughly bewildered. "Yes, except Zeus because Rhea fed him a stone instead right?"
"Yes. In fact, the stone she fed him was a meteorite."
"And that's why meteorites were so important?"
My head swayed slightly as I tried to figure out the best way to answer. "Yes and no. Meteorites were already important, but that made them more so. But that's only half of the story. You obviously know that my father managed to make Kronos release all of his siblings, but he also regurgitated the rock that Rhea had fed him." The son of the sea god made a face and I laughed. "I know, not the most appetizing story, though not the worst either. Well the rock..."
The young god cut me off. "Wait, what do you mean not the worst? What's worse than eating your kids?"
I raised one eyebrow, "Lots of them. For example, what about Tantalus? You met him. He's the one who killed his son and tried to feel him to the council."
He winced. "I forgot about him." He frowned. "Greek myths are weird."
I chuckled. As we spoke, the frequency of the meteors was increasing. There was now one every 50 seconds or so. "I won't argue with you about that, but can I continue?"
He blushed, "Of course. Sorry, I didn't mean to cut you off."
I shook my head. "It's okay. As I was saying, the rock that was fed to our grandfather was regurgitated. Once they had overthrown Kronos, Zeus took the stone and threw it off of mount Olympus to what was at the time, considered the center of the world." Now that most of the story was out of the way, I found myself struggling for words again.
"Well, I guess that explains why meteors were so important to the Greeks, but why are you so affected by them?"
I took the young gods hand and started drawing abstract patterns on it. It was harder to admit then I would have expected. "The place where the meteorite landed came to be called Delphi." Judging by the way his hand stiffened in my grasp, he was beginning to realize what I was saying. I looked him in the eyes and smiled. "Eventually, I built the temple for my oracle around the meteor. It was given the place of honour, and became one of the most important artifacts in my temple."
Both of us lapsed into silence. I watched a few more streaks of light paint the sky before I turned back to the youngest god. "My temple is pretty much gone, but there was a time when it was considered the center of the entire world. To me, meteors are a reminder of that time."
"And it's... a good reminder?"
I turned back to the son of the sea god. I couldn't blame him for having to ask. I wasn't doing the best at explaining it. Instead of struggling for words again, I closed the distance between our lips and kissed him with everything I had, trying to make him understand everything that I couldn't say. When I finally pulled back, both of us were breathing unevenly. "Does that answer your question?"
He cleared his throat and blushed. "Ya... I think I got it."
I shook my head in amusement and looked back at the sky. "I needed this reminder, especially now that Delphi is lost."
The son of the sea god ran his fingers through my hair. "Don't worry, we'll get it back."
I looked at the young god beside me, and I truly believed it. I smiled at him. "I know we will. And, thank you by the way." The son of Poseidon looked confused, so I clarified, "For this evening. It was... everything I could have hoped."
He gave me a pleased smile. "I'm glad you liked it Apollo."
I wrapped my arm around his shoulders and pulled him flush to my side as we went back to watching the comets blazing across the sky. I couldn't stop myself from smiling.
I had thought similar things before, but he was truly one of a kind. Only Percy could plan one of the most meaningful evenings imaginable, and not even know it.

Authors Note
I know that this update is over a week late...
The last two weeks have been some of the most stressful and difficult weeks I think I've ever had. I truly just couldn't write because I had way too much on my mind. I was even thinking about putting this story on hiatus for a month or so, but I think we have our issues solved so for now I'm going to try to continue my normal updating schedule.
P.S. the story about the meteorite is actually a real Greek myth.
Next update will be March 13th
Next Chapter:
I sighed. "Just because you don't want to practice, doesn't mean that you don't ever have too. Seriously Perce..."
