April 5th

Apollo POV

We were sitting in the living room. The son of the sea god was trying to read one of my poetry books. He seemed to be highly motivated to try to finish our resolutions but judging by his glazed expression, he wasn't exactly succeeding. Truthfully though, I wasn't having any more luck in trying to read the book that lay open in my lap.

Ever since our date, I had been thinking a lot more about my quest. The meteor shower was a reminder. I may have been happy recently since I had Percy, but that didn't mean that I was content to live out my life as a mortal. I had to retake Delphi if I ever intended to return to Olympus. It was a daunting task, but I knew that I would never accomplish it if I didn't start taking my training a bit more seriously.

And it also reminded me that I was originally sent with Percy for a reason.

"Have you managed to get sound yet?"

The son of Poseidon looked at me like I'd grown a second head. "You need to give me a little more to go on then that. Sound for..?"

I rubbed the back of my neck. I supposed I could have worded that better. Just because Percy always seemed to be able to know what I was thinking, didn't mean he could literally read my mind, "For your godly sight. Have you figured out why it doesn't have sound?"

"Umm... No. Why?"

I scoffed and raised one eyebrow. "You haven't even tried since we first started playing with it, have you?"

He shrugged. "Not really. I don't like using it."

I shook my head, "Just because you don't like doing it, doesn't mean you shouldn't at least learn how."

"I don't see why I should bother learning how to do something when I never intend to do it."

I sighed. "Just because you don't want to practice, doesn't mean that you don't ever have too. Seriously Perce..."

I knew that my questions seemed rather out of the blue, but it was important. He did need to learn how to control his gifts. Just because he had learned not to incinerate people didn't mean he was done.

He frowned at me. "I'm not saying that I shouldn't practice, I just don't like spying on people."

I had to work to hold in another sigh. "I've already told you Percy, it's not spying."

He set the book to the side and turned to face me completely. "Then what exactly do you call watching people without their knowledge and consent?"

I rolled my eyes. "You're a god Perce. It's not spying when you're a god. It's just... using the abilities you were given."

The instant the words were out of my mouth, I knew that I had worded it poorly. I was used to other Olympians. Gods knew that they were far more powerful than mortals. All of them saw themselves as superior. The son of Poseidon however was born a human and unlike the other gods who were born mortal, Percy didn't see godhood as a synonym for superiority. I hadn't meant to make it sound like mortals were second class, but I knew he was going to take it that way.

The youngest immortal narrowed his eyes. Judging by the way his form began flickering towards his godly self; he didn't appreciate my choice of words.

I held up my palms in a pacifying manner. "I didn't mean it like that."

"Then how did you mean it? Because it sounded like you were saying that rules didn't apply as long as you're a god."

I winced. I was so used to how calm the son of Poseidon was, that I had almost forgotten just how temperamental gods could be. "Okay... I know that's how it sounded, but I promise that was not what I was implying. It just..." I sighed and ran a hand through my hair. How does one explain the rules of godhood to one who was born mortal? "Gods have their own set of rules... I won't try to deny it; most gods see themselves as superior to humans. We're not only more powerful, we are immortal too. When you compare eons to decades, it's easy to feel like Gods have it way better. We do tend to forget some of the rules that humanity obeys, but that doesn't mean that gods don't have rules. We have just as many as humans, if not more. The main difference is that, if we break our rules, it's usually someone else who pays the price."

He frowned. "What do you mean?"

I ran a hand through my hair as I tried to think of an example. "Well... take my father for instance. When he broke his oath and fathered Thalia, it wasn't him who was cursed for breaking an oath sworn on the Styx. It was Thalia who inherited the curse. Why do you think she had so many monsters following her all the time? It wasn't just that she was more powerful than normal demigods, though that was part of it. It was also the Fates way of punishing my father for breaking his oath. It's rather difficult to punish a god, but there are very few things as painful as watching your children suffering for something that you did."

The silence that greeted me worried me a bit, but a quick glance at the son of the sea god showed me that his temper had already calmed. He was no longer flashing like he was about to slip into his other form. It was more like he was looking for words to say what he was thinking.

"I... guess that makes sense."

I felt a strong sense of relief that I had managed to explain my thoughts properly. I walked over and sat beside the son of Poseidon. "I know that it's different from what you're used to, but being a god is different than being a human. There are a lot of pros, but there are also a few very strong cons. Part of your agreement to become a temporary god though, means that you have to fulfill your duties. Right now, that simply means that you have to learn how to control all your gifts, not just the ones you like."

He frowned. "It still doesn't feel right to spy on people."

"I know, but you do need to master your gifts. If you learn it for no other reason, at least learn how to do it so that I don't get yelled at by the council for neglecting my duties." He sighed and leaned against me. I gladly took the opportunity to wrap my arm around his shoulders.

The son of Poseidon nodded, "Fine."

It seemed that was all there was to say on the subject. We both fell silent. The comfortable silence that normal surrounded us was still strained, the way it always was after an argument with someone. I was just about to break it to ask if he wanted me to start supper when, all of a sudden, I heard the son of the sea god start chuckling.

I pulled back just enough so that I could see his face and frowned. "What's so funny?"

He looked like he couldn't stop himself from smiling. "It's just... this was our first fight wasn't it?"

I blinked in surprise before I too started laughing. "Ya, I guess it was."

Cough*...

So... I had like a million things to do yesterday. This was on my list. I even reminded myself like 4 times that I had to update, and I still forgot. By the time I remembered, it was already past midnight and I was going to sleep.

I also just realized that I wrote the wrong date in the last chapter. I was always planning on updating on Monday. Sorry about that.

This chapter was the shortest one I've ever written. However, it is also the chapter that gets our story back on track for the quest. So though it's short, it's very important.

Next update will be March 21st

Next Chapter:

"Congratulations! You just won an all expense paid trip to the underworld..."
