"You ok Jane?"
"Yeah, no I am fine. My brother and his friends are back at this place I am renting and they are just going to kill me for not being there to help paint."
"You have a new place?"
"Yeah, just started renting it."
"Ok, write down your landlord's name and number. I am going to call him and we are going to transfer your lease into your alias."
"You think that is necessary?"
"I'd rather be safe."
"Ok," Jane said writing down the information and handing it to Vince. "Are we done here?"
"I will be in touch."
"I just can't wait for this to be over. My brother probably thinks I have turned into a drug dealer the way I disappear and take all these phone calls."
"It's not a secret Jane you can tell people what's going on."
"No need to get them involved it's not that big a deal."
"Jane…
"I know, I know," Jane said trying to down play it.
Jane sighed pulling up to her house. She knew she was going to get a lot of shit for being over an hour late to the paint party. She hoped the pizza sitting next to her would be a nice peace offering, but she also knew while the boys might be distracted someone else wouldn't be. She had no idea what she was really going to say but she worked best thinking on her feet.
"Well, look who finally decided to grace us with her presence," Frankie said tossing his paint brush on the tray.
"Yeah, yeah I know but I brought pizzas," Jane said placing them on the table.
"Out of my way," Frost said pushing past Frankie. "I am starving."
"Yeah you're always hungry."
"You're one to talk Mr. I need to eat every 2 hours."
"Who is the one here on track for the pros," Frankie bragged?
"You know there is a statute on the number of times you can play that card right," Frost joked back.
"Right and I am using it now to claim the first piece," Frankie said snagging a fully loaded piece of pizza.
Jane rolled her eyes, the boys were so simple. Her eyes landed on Maura who was quietly looking her over, clearly searching for something. Jane gave a little smile and headed into the living room to see the handy work the boy did and get out from under the watchful eye of her brother's best friend.
"You guys really made a lot of progress," Jane said looking around impressed.
"Yeah, no thanks to you," Frankie said with a mouthful of pizza.
"Whatever…just eat your pizza," Jane mumbled back.
All of the living room and dining room were painted. Jane wondered into the bedrooms which were the only things left to do.
"We can probably finish all the painting tonight."
Jane jumped hearing Maura's voice behind her.
"Sorry I didn't mean to scare you."
"It's ok, I guess I was just day dreaming. This place has come so far with just a little paint…I really think it can be nice."
"It is going to be a great place Jane."
"Feel free to go have some pizza I am going to start in here. I think I owe it to everyone to make up for my absence."
"Is everything ok?"
"Yeah, just got a little hung up earlier. Go relax with your friends," Jane encouraged.
"You know you're my friend too right."
Jane smiled. She was actually glad to have Maura as a friend and not just an acquaintance through her brother.
"I know, thanks Maura."
Jane got started on the room while Maura headed back out to the dining room with the boys. She didn't want to press Jane but wanted to let her know she was around if she wanted to talk.
By the time Maura, Frost and Frankie polished off the pizza Jane was nearly done with one of the room. Between the four of them they finished off the rest of the painting before dinner. They couldn't sleep in the house as the paint fumes would keep them high for days so Jane was going to spend a couple more nights on the boat. She hoped to be able to move in by the end of the week.
"You know you don't have to sleep on the boat with me. I am sure your house is much more comfortable," Jane said tossing her bag on the bed.
"Honestly? It is kind of lonely at my house. My parents are in Paris right now and there are just some housekeepers around," Maura said making herself comfy on the other side of the bed.
"You know for the longest time I really wish for a situation like that…where I could just have my parents travel a lot of never be home….but I guess the grass is always greener huh."
"I always wished for siblings and parents that would cut the crust off my sandwiches."
"Definitely not it's all cracked up to be. Oh my god," Jane said suddenly after something caught her attention.
"What," Maura asked slightly alarmed?
Jane pulled a picture of herself, Frankie and Maura that was at least five years old off a small shelf. Jane turned around and held it up for Maura to see.
"Oh my god," Maura muttered totally horrified.
"When the hell was this taken," Jane said flipping the picture over searching for a date. "Damn I was like a sophomore in high school."
"I forgot that was there…ugh can we pretend you didn't see that."
"Oh no, where is the fun in that," Jane said bouncing onto the bed. "You were pining for me for a long time huh."
"Oh god kill me now," Maura sighed pulling a pillow over her face.
"Hey, I was just kidding. I think it is cute. I loved getting flowers and candy and little toys it was flattering."
"I was such a dork."
"You're still a dork but a beautiful brilliant dork…you turned into a pretty great person Maura."
"Thanks. It's still mortifying though."
"Nah don't worry about it…I know it was just a childhood crush. There is no way someone like you would want to be with a person like me anyway."
"What are you talking about? You're a great person Jane."
"I don't know…maybe I was at some point but too much has happened," Jane said letting it slip out before her brain could stop it.
"Is that why your back from school? Is that why you have some injuries? Did something happen?"
Jane looked to Maura and was surprised she didn't see a little kid but a young adult showing genuine concern. Jane hadn't told anyone what happened and she was not planning to tonight, but she so desperately wanted someone to confide in.
"Something did happen but I am not ready to talk about it."
"Ok, I respect that but Jane…know I am here and Frankie…you are not alone."
"Thanks."
"Oh and someone like me would definitely fall for someone like you any day of the week," Maura said being a little bold and kissing Jane's cheek before getting off the bed. "Night Jane."
Jane was shocked by the friendly kiss. Her cheek was burning fire where lips recently branded her. She had to pull herself together, she couldn't do this for so many reasons. Still in all the darkness and pain it helped having a flicker of light every now and then. She just hoped it was enough to carry her through.
Maura felt like she hadn't taken a breath in the last five minutes. Once she was safely into her own room she couldn't believe what had actually just happened. She had kissed Jane Rizzoli…it was only on the cheek but still it almost felt like an out of body experience. Putting the kiss aside for a moment she was concerned about her friend, something clearly had happened…something very bad. Now she just needed to figure out what it was and get Jane to let her help…simple right?
