I made a change to the charges against Hoyt from the previous chapter since someone wanted me too...full disclosure I didn't not proof this at all I will try and do that tomorrow so hopefully it is not too bad. I am a little stuck about how I want Jane to either tell Maura about the attack or figure out she knows...but it seems they are on a collision course for sure. Hope you enjoy this chapter let me know!
Jane's heart hammered in her chest and her feet pounded the pavement as fast as her legs and lungs would allow. Even though she was no longer in sports she still enjoyed going out for a good run. There was something cathartic for Jane about running, challenging her body while clearing her mind. She didn't need anyone to run with, she didn't need any fancy equipment…just a pair of shoes and she was off. While so many things and people let her down running was always there for support and comfort.
She was in the final stretch of her cool down after a nice 10 mile run and she could see her house in the distance. While it might not look like much Jane was really proud of the place. In light of recent events she could have crumbled and hid but she was trying her hardest to dust herself off and move on with her life.
She hopped up the two steps onto the porch pausing to stretch for a few minutes. Her shirt was soaked through and she couldn't wait to get a drink and jump in a nice cool shower. She really hoped Frankie didn't drink all the orange juice desperately needing some sugar to replace her depleted system. Once inside she couldn't stand her shirt any longer and stripped it off resting it over the kitchen chair before heading to the fridge. She smiled seeing about ¼ of the OJ left and knowing she was going to finish it off drank straight from the carton.
"Didn't your mother teach you to drink out of a glass."
Jane nearly choked on her last gulp of OJ hearing Maura's voice from behind her. She dropped the container on the counter and quickly grabbed her shirt covering her left side before fulling turning around.
"Damn woman make a sound would you," Jane said still trying to catch her breath from the near heart attack she just had.
"Sorry I didn't mean to scare you."
Maura couldn't help but take a quick glance at the beautiful body before her. Her tone abs were still contracting from the elevated breathing but something was off. Maura noticed that when Jane grabbed for her shirt she didn't do so to cover herself, she did so to cover her left side. Maura couldn't give it too much thought as the uncovered portions of the oldest Rizzoli was very distracting.
"It's cool I ahhh…I just did know you were here and I figured Frankie would still be sleeping."
"He called me to help him pack. You would think after his extensive travels for baseball he would be able to pack for himself….or at least remember underwear."
"Seriously….he forgot his boxers? Man that boy better hope he gets drafted by a team close to home or I am not sure he is going to make it out there," Jane laughed shaking her head.
"At least his clothes were clean this time."
"Oh no."
"Yup, once I came over and everything was dirty and I mean literally every piece of clothing he owned."
"Hopeless," Jane said rolling her eyes. "Well, I am going to jump in the shower."
"Oh right I am going to run out for a few travel items for Frankie do you need anything while I am out?"
Jane reached for a can on top of the fridge and pulled out a $20.
"Here this is to cover anything you have to get for Frankie and if you could get some OJ that would be great."
"Done…and I am not taking that."
"Maura come on please."
"Fine," Maura said knowing Jane wouldn't take no for an answer.
"Thanks I will see you later."
Maura watched Jane head to the bathroom and close the door. Maura slipped the $20 back into the can she watched Jane pull it from before heading out herself.
Almost a half hour later Jane emerge from her shower feeling totally refreshed. She saw Frankie laying on the couch flipping through the TV channels.
"Hey ya bum," Jane said tossing the towel she was using to dry her hair at Frankie's head.
"Oh gross come on Jane it's all wet."
"It's clean you weirdo I just used it to dry my clean hair. You know unlike how you keep most of your clothes."
"Hey they are clean this time."
"Yeah this time. And seriously what is with Maura having to pack for you? Can't you handle that task on your own."
"Yeah, I can but she is so much better at it."
"You sure there isn't something going on between you two?"
"Me and Maura," Frankie asked with a chuckle? "Yeah, I am sure."
"I don't know…you're always together, she helps you pack, she is getting you to apply to colleges…
"She's my best friend and she's gay," Frankie said cutting his sister off.
"What?"
"Yeah…she might have her eyes on a Rizzoli but it's not this guy," Frankie said with a huge grin pointing to himself.
Jane looked stunned for a moment.
"Oh come on Jane you knew this."
Jane tried to think back to where she would have been told this information and she was coming up blank.
"Jane she had the biggest crush on you when she was younger."
"She was just a kid then I didn't think….I just thought it was a phase….or she looked up to me or something."
"Yeah, well it wasn't just a phase."
"She really likes me?"
"Now? Probably not I am sure she has moved on from her childhood crush…she has dated other people before but well now that you mention it I think she is actually single. I should ask her about that."
"How about not?"
"Relax she tells me everything….remember BFF's."
"Whatever…where are you going anyway?"
"Orlando."
"Seriously," Jane asked a little shocked he was going all the way to Orlando as it was only a 3 day weekend?"
"Yeah there is an All-Star scouting tournament this weekend…tons of college and pro scouts are going to be there."
"You nervous?"
"Nah…ok maybe a little," Frankie admitted after seeing his sisters glare.
"You're going to do great baby brother," Jane said knowing when to tease and when to be serious…this was one of those serious moments. "You are in the best shape I have ever seen you in and you have been crushing it recently. Don't try and do anything different than what you have been doing…stick with your strong pitches and focus on that catcher's mitt."
"Thanks Jane."
They heard a car door shut outside.
"Sounds like your wife is back," Jane teased.
The knock on the door caused both Rizzoli's to be a little confused.
"My wife wouldn't knock," Frankie relayed.
"Don't strain yourself getting up….I'll get it," Jane said rolling her eyes at her brother.
Jane walked over to the door which was just off the living room and not far from where Frankie was laying. She was a little shocked to see Vince standing there. She quickly opened the door and stepped onto the porch instead of inviting Vince in.
"Vince umm what are you doing here?"
"I tried calling you but your phone is off."
"Sorry, I was out running I guess I haven't turned it back on yet."
"Part of my visit is because I wanted to check on you not having heard from you for two hours….the other part is the complaint has been updated with new charges and I wanted to go over your statement and have you sign the new complaint."
"Does it have to be right now," Jane asked looking back inside.
"There isn't an immediate urgency but we would like to get the documents signed and filed as soon as possible."
Jane paused looking just over Vince's shoulder.
"Hi…umm I am sorry to interrupt," Maura said awkwardly walking up to the porch. "I am just going to head inside please continue."
Jane sighed watching Maura slip past her inside. She had no idea what she heard but she knew Maura knew Vince was with the police.
"Im sorry if coming here is causing you problems."
"No, its fine…I just think I am running out of excuses."
"Hey I don't want to push you kiddo you know that…but you should tell someone….even if it is not your family. No one should have to go through this alone."
"I know Vince…sometimes I just wish it never happened and its like if I tell someone I can no longer pretend it didn't."
"Maybe acknowledging what happened will help you move on from this mess….really move on from it not just bury it deep down inside."
"I hear ya…Give me about an hour and I will come down to the station and we can go over everything."
"Thanks Jane….you're going to get through this."
Jane watched and Vince departed. She took a few moments for herself figuring out what she was going to say incase anyone asked any questions. She knew Vince was right…she was going to have to stop pretending it didn't happen and let people in to help her deal with this ongoing mess. One thing was for sure she was NOT going to do it until she knew Frankie was in a good place to handle the news and process it. She would not distract her brother from his dreams. Until then she would manage just fine.
