Once at the police station, Maura and Frankie refused to leave knowing they would be more likely to get information about what was going on if they were physically there. After Vince and his team left the two were put into a conference room so they would be out of the way and slightly more comfortable than in office chairs. They had been in the conference room for over thirty minutes now just waiting. Maura, sick of sitting, started pacing around the conference room looking at various wall hangings. Frankie was fidgeting in his seat growing more and more restless.

"I hate being here," Frankie sighed dropping his head to the table.

"We can go back to your place," Maura offered although would have preferred to stay.

"No, no we need to be here. I just feel like we are being caged…to try and be contained and pushed aside. She is my sister, I have a right to know what the hell is going on. I feel so helpless," Frankie said beyond frustrated.

"It's a feeling I know well," Maura sighed sitting down next to Frankie, "but we have to trust they are doing their jobs and hope it will all be over soon."

"Did you tell Jane…does she know," Frankie asked out of the blue?

"Know what," Maura asked not following his scattered thoughts.

"Where you're going to college? Did you tell her about Harvard?"

"Yes, she knows. I told her before I left for New York."

"Good, she needs to have that information. She really loves you."

Maura couldn't help but smile.

"I really love her."

"I'm glad she has you…I'm glad we both have you."

"I'm glad we all have each other to rely on. I never imagined this situation ever playing out in real life, but we are going to get through this and be stronger because of it."

A silence fell over them, Maura knew they needed a distraction.

"Any word from the scouts," Maura asked not recently having the chance to get caught up with her best friend.

"Yeah, they are saying early second round, maybe with one or two good combine performances I could sneak into the back half of the first round."

"Wow Frankie that is great."

"Yeah, I am going to sign with an agent once all this is done and officially declare."

"So, your foregoing college?"

"I could still go, but I really can't picture myself sitting in college classes."

"I understand I just think education is extremely important."

"I know you do and that is why I promise you I will get a college degree."

Maura looked at him slightly shocked but with a bright smile.

"I have been looking at some online programs I can do at my own pace and when it works for me."

"I think that is a very good idea Frankie. I'm so proud of you."

"Yeah well don't be surprised when you find a term paper in your inbox that I need you to proof," he smirked.

"I would love it," Maura smiled, but that smile faded when she saw an officer posted outside the conference room.

"What is it," Frankie asked looking around?

"Why do we have a guard?"

Frankie turn to see a guard now placed at the door to the conference room. He stood and looked through the window to see the bullpen in a flurry of activity. Frankie tried to open the door to the conference room but was blocked by the guard.

"What is going on," Frankie asked?

"I'm sorry sir I was just told to make sure you stay here."

"Why…something must have happened?"

"I haven't been informed of that information."

"THEN YOU BETTER FIND OUT FROM SOMEONE THAT KNOWS," Frankie yelled.

"Frankie…come on," Maura said tugging on his arm pulling him back into the conference room.

"Clearly something has happened," Frankie said annoyed.

"I know and we have to let them do their jobs…we will know soon."

Maura and Frankie stood by the windows and watched as officers ran in and out of the squad room. It was very clear something major had happened and both teens feared the worst. Not being told what actually happened their minds drifted to worst case scenarios which made waiting almost unbearable.

"Let's go," the officer said opening the door.

"Go? Go where," Frankie asked?

"I've been instructed to bring you down to Mass General."

"THE HOSPITAL," Frankie yelled.

"Jane is alive that is all I know."

"Frankie he clearly doesn't know much we need to go now," Maura said trying to be the rational one.

"Right, you're right…lets go."

The officer escorted the pair down to his squad car and they made their way over to Mass General. The once settled feeling Maura had knowing Jane was alive quickly dissipated when they pulled into the ER which was flooded with cop cars and ambulances. Frankie tried to get out of the car but the door wouldn't open.

"I have to let you out kid," the cop informed him.

"Well…," Frankie was growing impatient.

"I don't know where you are going yet give me a minute," the cop said getting out of the car.

"I JUST WANT OUT OF THIS CAR," Frankie yelled fighting with the door handle.

"Frankie, I get it but if you act insane they aren't going to let you out anytime soon. Give him a minute…with the number of cops around and the activity I can see in the ER we wouldn't get information any faster on our own."

"Why do you always have to be so sensible," Frankie huffed looking very much so like his sister when she pouted?

"Someone had to keep you Rizzoli's in line."

Minutes felt like hours but finally Maura say Vince emerge from the ER.

"Vince," Maura greeted as he opened the back door of the squad car.

"Vince where is my sister? How is she?"

"She is in surgery."

Frankie and Maura both felt like they got the wind knocked out of them. Surgery was serious and meant Jane was injured.

"What happened," Frankie begged to know?

"I can't discuss the details but Jane has some abdominal injuries, a concussion as far as I know and a bullet grazed her arm."

"SHE WAS SHOT," Frankie yelled!

"That is actually the least concerning injury, it was just a graze to her shoulder…didn't even go deep enough to hit muscle."

"How comforting," Frankie shot back.

"Vince do you know how serious the head injury is? Or how long she will be in surgery," Maura asked wanting to find out more details on Jane's injuries?

"Not really she was in and out of consciousness at the scene…I think part of it was shock and adrenaline. She had some stab wounds or cuts to her torso but she was taken out pretty quickly so I don't know much."

"Was my ma called? Where should we go? Can we see her doctor and get some answers," Frankie asked?

"I sent a uniform to go get Angela and bring her down here. There is no way she would be able to make it through this circus on her own. You two are headed to the third floor waiting room, I will make sure Angela gets there."

"Why is there such a police presence down here," Maura asked knowing this wasn't all for Jane?

"I'm sorry I can't discuss that right now…just head to the third floor and focus on Jane right now."

Maura nodded deciding to let it drop because really Jane was her only priority right now. She thanked Vince one more time before taking Frankie's hand to head up to the third floor.

They were only there for about 30 minutes before Angela came storming onto the floor. Maura and Frankie were in the waiting room when they heard Angela yelling at the nurse's station.

"JANE RIZZOLI…R. I. Z. Z. O. L. I. She was brought in through the ER and is in surgery I need to know what is going on with my baby."

"Ok, if you can take a seat I will find her chart and let you know," the nurse said calmly.

"I WILL WAIT," Angela said through gritted teeth.

The nurses nodded and tapped Rizzoli into her computer.

"She is still in OR2."

"Thanks Capitan Obvious…for what? How long will she be there? How serious are her injuries?"

"She is with the trauma unit but she is listed as non-life threatening. I put in a request to get an update from her doctor and when she is out of surgery you will get an update. I am sorry I don't know anything more."

"Ma," Frankie said pulling his mom into a hug, "Come on the waiting room is over here. The nurse really doesn't know anything…it's a waiting game."

Excruciating minutes turned into painful hours as they waited for the doctor to come out and give them a real update. The nurse had kept them advised that Jane was still in surgery and doing well, but that is all she could say. Vince had been by to check in and let everyone know he was heading back to the precinct but would be back when the hospital called that Jane was awake and alert. He advised them the best they could to not discuss what happened with Jane and just focus on her until he was able to speak to Jane. They all would try but Jane was going to dictate how the conversation would go.

Almost thirty minutes after Vince left the doctor finally arrived in the waiting room.

"Rizzoli," he called out.

The three jumped to their feet desperate for information.

"How is my Janie," Angela asked tears welling in her eyes already?

"You have a very tough daughter on your hands…she made it through surgery pretty good all things considered."

"What happened? We haven't really been told anything."

"Well she had a number of puncture wounds to her torso, none were deep so they didn't cause much damage but one did hit the liver and gallbladder."

Angela gasped not knowing medically what really that meant but in her mind, it couldn't have been anything good.

"Out of all the organs that could have been hit she picked the right ones. She can live a completely normal healthy life without a gallbladder and we simply resected a very tiny portion of the liver that was damaged. The liver is an amazing organ and will regenerate the damaged piece."

Angela took a deep breath thankful so far things didn't sound so terrible.

"She did have a GSW to the right shoulder but it was a through and through more of a graze needed about 10 stitches. She did dislocate that same shoulder but we were able to pop it right back in. There were no breaks but we are going to need to image that when she recovers, make sure there is no muscle damage. She had a broken nose we set and a black eye with a concussion. We will have to wait to assess her further after she wakes up."

"Oh my god my baby," Angela cried out thinking about all the pain Jane must have been in.

"Can we see her," Frankie asked?

"She is in recovery right now but should be moved up to her room within a half hour. With the anesthesia and trauma she has been through it could be a couple hours before she wakes up though. The nurse will have her room number soon and will let you know."

"Thank you doctor for taking care of my baby."

"It was my pleasure. I will be by later tonight to check on her, she will have an overnight doctor and I will be back on tomorrow afternoon…any questions you let us know."

"You might regret that with my ma and our doctor in training here," Frankie laughed.

"Oh really," the doctor asked?

"I'm not a doctor in training I want to be a doctor though," Maura admitted.

"She was just accepted to Harvard…she is going to be a doctor," Frankie said confidently.

"Harvard that is impressive. Good luck with your studies…we could always use another good doctor."

"Thank you."

And with that the doctor departed and the three collectively let out a deep breath.

"Ok, ok Jane is ok," Frankie said trying to collect himself.

"But what did my baby have to go through," Angela said still distraught by the injuries her daughter suffered.

"Ma we can't focus on that right now…we just need to focus on Jane and making sure she is comfortable and calm. We will deal with what happened later. The most important think is Janie is ok," Frankie reiterated to his ma.

"You're right…its just all so much."

Over the course of the next hour the nurse directed the small group to Jane's room. Eventually Jane was wheeled in and the impact of seeing Jane is such a state hit each person differently. Angela sprung into a fresh batch of tears seeing her daughter in such rough shape. She immediately pulled a chair to the side of her bed, took her hand and said a silent prayer. Frankie felt a surge of anger course through his body. He was grateful his sister was ok but hated the man or men that did this. He wanted answers and this we can't discuss the case wasn't going to cut it anymore. Maura was beyond relieved her girlfriend was ok, but above all else she felt love. She knew she loved Jane before this but now she new without a doubt she was deeply in love with Jane.

"Frankie why don't you take your mother to get some coffee and maybe something to eat. It's been hours since you guys have eaten anything," Maura suggested after the nurses had been through to check on Jane?

"Yeah, that is probably a good idea. I am starving and we have been here all day," Frankie said knowing Maura probably wanted some time with Jane.

"What about you Maura? You have been here just as long?"

"I'm fine for now, besides I don't want to leave Jane alone. Maybe bring back a salad or a sandwich or something," Maura offered knowing Angela wouldn't let it go otherwise.

"Ok sweetheart we will bring you back something to eat and a coffee. We won't be gone long."

"Don't rush, we aren't going anywhere," Maura smiled.

Maura smiled as she watched Angela and Frankie leave the room. She honestly wasn't sure Angela was going to leave her daughters side, but Maura was thankful for the time alone with Jane. Even though Jane was still unconscious but wanted this time to just be present with her.

"I'm here baby," Maura said linking her hand with Jane's. "I don't know what happened today but your safe now and I'm not leaving your side. I honestly didn't know the level of fear I felt today was possible but on the flip side I didn't realize the level of love I have for you. I love you Jane, I am in love with you," Maura said tears in her eyes over the overwhelming emotions she was feeling.

Maura rested her head on the bed and continued to hold Jane's hand. She needed the physical connection right now, she needed to know after this long and crazy day that Jane was with her. She nearly jumped out of her seat when she felt a squeeze of her hand.

"Jane," Maura whispered watching as her girlfriend was trying to come around.

Maura gently brushed back Jane's hair trying to stimulate some nerve endings and get her to wake from the fog. It took a few minutes but a forced cough seemed to be the final push Jane needed to join the land of the living again.

"Ugh pain," Jane mumbled.

"Ok, ok I am going to call the nurse," Maura said pushing the nursing station call button, "they will be here in a few minutes and have something for pain."

Jane squinted her eyes as even the dim lighting of the room was too much for Jane to handle.

"Bright."

"Ill turn this overhead off and just keep on the small lamp," Maura said quickly adjusting the lighting in the room.

"Better."

"Good, I'm so glad your awake," Maura smiled.

She wanted to hug and kiss Jane so badly but she wasn't sure where Jane was feeling pain and didn't want to do anything until the nurse check her and get her some pain meds.

"Question," Jane huffed out.

"What is it?"

"Who…who are you?"

Maura froze like a deer caught in headlights. Who was she? The love of her life that was who she was! Why didn't Jane know that?

"I ummm…I…we…,"

"Kidding," Jane half smiled, "kiss," she requested.

"You're kidding…your lucky your already in the hospital Jane Rizzoli because after that stunt I should kick your butt not give you a kiss," Maura said brushing her lips over Janes.

"Love."

Before Maura could respond the nurse walked in.

"Well, hello there Jane. It is very good to see you awake. How are you feeling?"

"Ok."

"Are you serious Jane Rizzoli," Maura huffed, "she said she was in pain."

"Ahh we have a tough girl on our hands. Ok pain level on scaled from 1 almost no pain to 10 worst pain in your life."

"Hmm 5."

"Ok, 5 multiplied by the tough girl factor and we get about an 8. I am going to start you on a morphine drip in a few minutes but first we need to get the doctor in to check that head of yours."

"Warn him its thick he might need to bring the sledge hammer to crack it," Maura sassed.

"Noted," the nurse smiled.

The doctor was able to come back and assess Jane and ordered the morphine. Jane was able to see her ma and brother before the meds kicked in and she was out. Angela sent the kids home to get a proper night's rest, there wouldn't be much more happening tonight. Any answers to what the hell happened was going to have to wait for another day.
