"I will save Sasuke," he told her infallibly. "I did save Sasuke."

"And how?" she demanded, challenging his Sharingan with her own emerald eyes. "By slaughtering his entire family and leaving your last words of hate in the air?"

He fumed in his own apathetic way, and broke their gaze. "Sasuke will soar," he said quietly. "Much higher than I ever have—much higher than I ever will."

There was a long silence, and she sighed, almost sympathetically, as she took his face in her hands.

"Of course he will," she assured him, brushing her fingers against the eyelids that covered his blindness. "You gave him the chance to soar. After all," she surveyed his broken bones, his tattered cloak, "how can you fly with broken wings?"
