Chapter Fifteen
To Wish Impossible Things
Lily stayed with Brooke until Keith and Karen were able to return home. This attack convinced Karen to cancel her Italy trip. After a lot of thought and discussion, she had decided to go with Keith, leaving the boys in charge of the house and Lily. However, she quickly changed her mind once the attack happened. She didn't care if the crime was personal or not. She didn't want to leave her family vulnerable for another attack.
Her family tried to convince her that things would be fine while they were on their trip, but Karen wasn't going to budge. Haley's parents, Deb and Julian also volunteered to keep an eye on everybody while they were gone. After a lot of persuading, Karen decided to take her trip.
Both Brooke and Haley were there to help Lucas and Nathan with their recoveries. They wanted to be able to compete in the annual Boy Toy charity auction. Brooke had saved all of her money so she could bid on Lucas. She didn't care if her mother approved of it or not. She was going to win that date with him. There was no other option.
That same day, Brooke found out some unexpected news from her father, the same news that he had wanted to share at Thanksgiving. And she was disgusted about both of the news. After the argument, she quickly went to her bedroom and called Haley to vent about it.
"My dad isn't just marrying that slut, but she's pregnant with his baby!" she angrily exclaimed. "With my luck, they will probably have a boy. Then he'll ignore me more than ever. He'll probably claim that I'm not his daughter anymore."
She could tell that her friend was amused. "Brooke, don't you think that you're overreacting?"
"No, I don't. When was he ever there for me? Or my mother?" Brooke asked. Haley knew she had a point. "All he has done in the past sixteen years is either go golfing with his clients or have affairs with women who are much younger than him. Who knows if he will repeat the process with this kid? But if he does, then I will help raise my brother or sister. There is no way I'm going to turn my back on my family." She was planning on saying more, but she then heard the doorbell. "I got to go. Someone is at the door." They quickly said good-bye before she hung up the phone.
Brooke hurried to the door and pulled it open. She was shocked when she saw Rachel, who was looking very upset. She quickly embraced her friend in a hug before she gestured her to come in. There were mixed emotions as Brooke led her into the living room. She waited until they were sitting on the couch before she got ready to speak.
Rachel beat her to it. "Dan found out that I was pregnant with Julian's baby." Brooke knew where the conversation was going before Rachel even told the rest of her story. "He taunted me and convinced me that I would ruin Julian's life if I kept this baby. So I did what I thought was best for everyone. I'm sorry I didn't tell you or contact you, but I was so confused that I didn't know what to do." Rachel let out a heavy sigh. "Now I know how you felt when you found out you were pregnant."
Brooke gave her a comforting smile. "Don't worry. I'm here for you. We'll get through this together."
Rachel shook her head. "There is no baby anymore." Brooke was curious to hear what had happened. "I had a miscarriage a few days ago. And that's why I came back to Tree Hill. Dan doesn't have anything on me anymore. Besides, I couldn't miss the Boy Toy charity auction."
Brooke was confused by Rachel's reaction. She seemed very upset at first over the whole pregnancy thing, but she was thrilled when she revealed that she had lost the baby. But she then figured that it was more because she was worried about Julian than the baby.
"Well, you're in luck. Even though Julian isn't a basketball player, Whitey is letting him be auctioned off. So tonight would be the perfect chance to talk to him," Brooke told her. "And I'm sure that he will understand once he hears what his father did. He is already suspicious about him for the attack on Lucas and his family."
"Yeah, I heard about that," Rachel said. "Are they okay?"
Brooke nodded. "Lucas and Nathan got the worst of it since they fought off the attackers. I feel really bad for Lily though. She has been dealing with nightmares ever since the attack. Keith and Karen are going to try counseling for her. I hope that will help her."
Rachel agreed. She then changed the subject. "Can I stay with you for awhile? I really don't want to go home and face my parents. I know that they probably didn't even miss me, but I don't want to take that chance."
Brooke gave her a smile. "Of course you can stay with me. Let's go get your stuff out of your car."
"Did I miss anything else while I was gone?" Rachel asked her as they headed out the front door.
Brooke thought for a moment. "No unless you want to count my dad marrying his whore who is now having his baby."
Rachel just rolled her eyes. "Why am I not surprised?"
That evening, Brooke stood with Haley, Millie and Alex towards the front of the stage. Both Brooke and Haley wanted to make sure that they had a clear view of the men who they were bidding on. "It's too bad Lucas and Nathan are the last ones on the list. If you don't get them, then you're out of luck," Alex pointed out.
"I don't think Lucas will get bids too high," Brooke replied. "He said that he's not really into this whole auction thing, but he wanted to do it for charity. And if I play my cards right, he will get a free date with me."
The auction soon started and the basketball players started to come out. The crowd cheered as some players really showed off. Then Julian came out and the crowd went wild. There were bids every which way, but it quickly ended once someone called out 300 dollars. Brooke smiled to herself as she thought of the contribution that helped Rachel get to that amount. Rachel was hiding in the crowd and she would only make her presence known to Julian when it was time for the dates.
Later, Jake came out in the mascot outfit. To Brooke's surprise, Peyton won him. She would have thought she would have to battle it out with her for Lucas. But she didn't dwell on it for long. Instead, she waited impatiently until Lucas's name was called.
Lucas emerged from the curtain as the audience cheered. Brooke waited until the bidders went as high as they could go before calling the amount of money that she had. Whitey was about to declare Brooke the winner when they heard another voice calling out her amount. Brooke couldn't see who it was, but she knew that she had to act quickly if she wanted to get Lucas. Borrowing money from Alex, she called out her new number. However, the other bidder had more money and Brooke was disappointed when she heard that Lucas had been sold.
Millie tried to cheer her up as Alex disappeared into the crowd. Nathan came out from behind the curtain and the crowd went wild. Haley was surprised as Nathan showed off for the crowd. The amount of money started high and quickly became higher. Haley turned to her friend. "Bid on Nathan," she ordered.
"What? Why?" Brooke asked.
"Because I'm letting you borrow my boyfriend for the night," Haley replied as she gestured her to hurry up. Brooke called out the amount of money that she had collected again and was relieved when she heard that Nathan was hers.
"Are you sure you want me to do this?" Brooke asked Haley as they headed to the location where the bidders would collect their men. Millie went to go find Mouth. Even though he wasn't in the auction, they were going out on a date too.
"You had this whole evening planned. It would be sad if you had wasted it," Haley replied. "Besides, I'm curious to know if my boyfriend talks about me when I'm not there." Brooke laughed. "I'm sorry that you didn't get Lucas."
Brooke nodded. "Yeah, me too. I wonder who did though," she said as Alex joined them. She gave them a wide smile. "What are you so happy about? Do you know who won Lucas?" she asked anxiously.
Alex nodded. "Yeah, and Julian was right. Lucas does have an ex-wife. And she is the one who won him."
"How many times I have to tell you that Lucas doesn't have an ex-wife?" Brooke said. She was getting tired of having this conversation. "I'm his friend. I think I would know if he had an ex-wife." She didn't say anything more as she walked away from Alex. Haley didn't say anything as she followed her. Brooke shook her head in disbelief. "Can you believe her? She won't let that ex-wife thing go. Well, I'm going to prove her wrong. I'm going over to Lucas and his date and introduce myself."
"I don't think that's a good idea," Haley replied. "You don't want to ruin the night by causing more drama, do you?"
Brooke frowned. "How would I cause drama if I'm just going to introduce myself?"
Haley tried to think of a good lie, but nothing came to mind. Truthfully, she was tired of hiding secrets from Brooke. This was her best friend and she was supposed to tell her secrets, not hide them from her. However, this secret was not hers to tell. "Why don't you get your card and I'll be right back?" she suggested. Not waiting for an answer, she hurried away from her and went to find Lucas.
It took Haley a few moments before she found him. He gave her a smile. "So who won me?" he asked curiously. "Because I couldn't see who it was."
"According to Alex, it is your family friend Lindsey," Haley replied as Lucas's face fell. "You have to tell Brooke the truth about Lindsey now or I will. I'm tired of keeping this from her. In fact, I don't know why you wanted to keep this a secret at all. So you've made a mistake in getting married too young. Brooke made the mistake of having sex with guys she barely knows and ended up getting pregnant. You've both learned from them. So there is no reason in hiding your secret."
"What about yours?" Lucas asked. "When are you going to tell Brooke that you have been tutoring Peyton all this time and that's how you got into the discussion for her to be the deejay for her Halloween party?"
"That's completely different," Haley protested. "I'm keeping that a secret because I know how Brooke feels about Peyton. You're just afraid of embarrassment and ruining your family's reputation. I'm surprised that that didn't cause the family feud between your family and the other Scott family."
Lucas let out a heavy sigh. "I'll tell her after the holidays are over," he promised her before he went to find Lindsey.
A few hours later, Nathan dropped Brooke off at her house. To her surprise, the front porch lights were on. "Well, that's never good if my mother is waiting up for me," Brooke told Nathan. "I'm sure she is just waiting to ruin my night."
"Don't let her get to you," Nathan advised her. Brooke knew he was right. "I hope you're not too disappointed that you had the second best looking twin, but I had a fun time tonight. I never thought swimming in the pool with my clothes on would be so much fun."
Brooke laughed. "If you wouldn't have pushed me in, then I wouldn't have pulled you in." There was a short pause before she spoke again. "Well, I guess I should go in. You don't have to walk me to the door. I don't want my mom to get the wrong idea about us."
Nathan looked at her with raised eyebrows. "Since when do you care about what your mom thinks?"
"I don't want her to carry out her threat about separating me from my friends," Brooke replied. "She has already shown that she will do that when she tried to force me to go to Thanksgiving dinner with my dad."
"Do you really think she is conspiring with Dan?" Nathan asked. They had started to discuss it earlier at dinner, but they quickly changed the subject. They hadn't wanted to ruin the evening with the talk of people going after them.
"It's too much of a coincidence that my mother refused to let me go over to your house right before you and your family were attacked," Brooke replied. "The problem is that nobody wants to admit that they are behind this or involved in this attack."
"Don't worry. We'll figure something out," he assured her as she climbed out of the car. "Are you sure you don't want me to walk you up to the door?" Brooke gave him a smile as she nodded her head. "What about my kiss?" he called. Brooke stopped for a moment before she went back over to the car and leaned over. Their lips touched for a few seconds before they pulled away. "Don't tell Haley this, but you're a good kisser."
"You're not bad yourself," Brooke replied before she headed into her house. She really hoped that her mother wouldn't be giving her a lecture about coming in late. She never had a curfew before. She wasn't planning on having one now.
Brooke soon heard her mother's voice. "Brooke, can you come in the living room for a moment?" Being exhausted as she was, she wasn't in the mood to listen her mother. However, her mother didn't allow her to move very far before she demanded that Brooke come into the room. Brooke quietly groaned to herself before she went into the living room. Victoria gestured her to sit down and Brooke started to get nervous. "Brooke, there is something I need to tell you," Victoria said. Brooke wasn't sure if she wanted to hear this, but she knew that she had to if she wanted to get out of the room.
"We're what?!" Brooke angrily exclaimed.
