Chapter Forty-One:
They were sitting together on park bench sipping coffee peacefully.
"Penny for your thoughts, Spencer?" Rayburn asked.
"Which one?" he asked,
"All of them," she said.
"There is just so much to decide on," he said. "Moving in with you and Steph, me rejoining the BAU. Jenna changing school districts. It's a lot to consider."
"Not all at once," she said. "You still have to give out exams."
"But I think about it all constantly," he said.
"I wish I was as smart as you sometimes, but other times I don't envy you," she said. "As your team keep emphasizing, you're never alone."
"I know," he said taking her hand. "I have you."
"We're going to make this work," she said. "I believe it in my gut and in my soul."
"I do too," he said.
…
It was the day before they were due to move in and most of their things were in boxes. Reid brought Jenna into his bedroom and pulled out a key.
"Do you know what this?" he asked.
"A place where mom kept her private things," she said.
"It's called a hope chest," he said. "It belongs to you now to carry on your mother's hopes and dreams while forging your own path."
"You really want me to have it?" she asked.
"If you think it won't clash with your room?"
"No," she said. "It's looks really neat."
"Would you like to see what's inside?"
"Please," she said.
The spent the rest of the night pouring over the details of Jane's life. Reid read out parts of Jane's diary and Jenna examined her wedding dress. They laughed at old photos together and few tears were shed. It wasn't his way of saying goodbye to Jane, but a place to keep Jane's memory safe.
…
Reid sat in J.J.'s office patiently. The expression on her face gave nothing away. He had no idea what was coming.
"I spoke with the unit chief Neal Weis," she said. "He'd be honored to have you on his team."
"That's great news J.J!" he said.
"Congratulations, SSA Reid," she said smiling.
"Thank you so much, J.J." he said standing.
She came around and gave him a hug.
"Big things are coming for you Spence," she said. "I can feel it."
…
"Dad I'm going to be fine," Jenna said over the phone as Rayburn made pancakes for her and Stephanie.
"I just can't believe I'm going to be missing your first day of eighth grade," Reid said.
"It's not kindergarten," she said.
"But next year you'll be a high schooler, you're growing up so fast."
"I thought you said my development rate was only slightly above average," she said teasingly.
"You know what I mean."
"I'm going to be late if I keep talking to you. I promise I'll tell you all about my first day when you get home okay?"
"Okay, Jenny Jen. I love you."
"I love you too," she said and hung up.
Stephanie was watching.
"So, is he going to be like this every first day of school?"
"Pretty much," she said.
"Cool," she said. "Dad never makes a big deal of being there for my first days."
"I guess what I think is kind of embarrassing is kind of cool to other people," Jenna said.
"Your dad's one of a kind, Jenna," Rayburn said as she put pancakes on her plate. "Don't ever take it for granted."
"I've figured that out recently," she said. "And I won't."
"So, when do you think he's going to propose, Mom?" Stephanie asked. "I'm thinking Halloween as there is something romantic about running around in masks."
Rayburn lightly hit Stephanie's hand with a spatula.
"Remember when we had a talk about boundaries?" she said.
"I have selective memory," she said with a smile.
"I hope you remember your math or I'm making you study with your father."
"I haven't forgotten anything," she said. "I was tanking my grades to mess with you."
Rayburn looked furious and Jenna couldn't help but snicker. It felt good to be part of a family. Jenna trusted her dad to know what was best, and what was best was Addison and Stephanie Rayburn for now.
