So, Thorin follows his gut...
No beta, sorry for mistakes, feel free to apply.
Thorin watched all weary in the distance but when Gandalf called his nephews fools he had to disagree. It wasn't his to call them fools, only Thorin got to do that. But then master Baggins stepped in, as he always does.
Thorin had an impulse to stop him, they have just escaped Krill, it seemed dangerous out there, but of course he was wrong. This was the wild, it was dangerous all the time, master Baggins was right, he was small but he knew how to handle himself. Thorin shouldn't let his fears govern his decisions. Fili and Kili were out there probably in some childish pursuit, nothing dangerous, master Baggins will find a way to get them back. That's why he let go and addressed Bofur's problem with their supplies.
"Go, hunt us dinner" he ordered and turned back. Master Baggins was already gone, quick as always. He was probably silly to worry, Krill was far to the west, this wasn't his territory anymore, it was… He looked around. Gandalf wasn't in sight either, he went with the Hobbit. That should have discourage his fears, but they only grew bigger. Wizard didn't roam somewhere if it wasn't any danger there, he was drawn to danger like moth to a flame, and he had no interest in dull ordinary tasks like collecting youngsters that stayed from path while hunting.
"Balin watch the camp, Dwalin and Bifur with me, we will found those two mischief and teach them a lesson about wandering off" he said darkly.
"Excuse me" Balin led him to a side "isn't that a tad overprotective, like you said they are fully grown warriors, we wouldn't brought them if they weren't."
"Yes they are, but it just feels wrong, keep everyone in sight and don't go to sleep until we're back" he patted him on the back and ran into the darkness knowing Dwalin and Bifur are right behind.
The sun has set and tracks were hard to follow. They reached huge pile of rocks, tracks led both ways.
"You two that way" he instructed them "meet me on the other side."
"But…" started Dwalin.
"I'm not an infant just because I'm your prince" Thorin growled. "If you see Kili and Fili first, drag them back by their ears!"
They nodded and Thorin hurried sensing the danger. White deer was in the air. He hated it almost as Krill, but he knew better than to pursue its trail. Kili and Fili were too young to know.
Behind the rocks there was a small flame. He approached it carefully just to find Gandalf crouched down by the flames.
"You old fool" Thorin turned on him. "Where are others? I thought you went with Master Baggins to find them, and you just wandered off to think some, to dream of White Deer. They could all be sleeping somewhere!"
Gandalf looked at him rising his eyebrows with shadows long on his face from the fire.
"They are sleeping" he said calmly. "Here."
Thorin looked in the shadows and saw them there, three silhouettes on the ground.
"What did you do?" he hurried by their side. Fili and Kili did breathe still but their breath was weak, skin pale and they lay too still, master Baggins twitched in his sleep. "How could you let master Baggins to fall asleep on a place like this, just beside magical boulder? You should have known better!"
"He went in on his own free will" Gandalf said with his strong voice, but then he continued more quietly. "There was no time for anything else, I can't go in, and you can see how far have Fili and Kili gone, they are persistent hunters but I'm confident Bilbo is stubborn enough to get them out."
"On his own?" Thorin was enraged. "You never go in on your own, the beast will get him too! Send me in, I'll get them."
"No" said Gandalf simply.
"What?" Thorin advanced at him. "You must, they'll be lost!"
"They will be lost if you go in" Gandalf shouted at him. "There is too much that your heart desires, too much that was lost, if you go in there no one will return!"
"But you can't let everything depend on master Baggins! Their lives are at stake" Thorin was frustrated.
"But everything does depend on him, doesn't it?" Gandalf said darkly. "I've chose him because he has what it takes and he had shown it many times. Besides his heart's greatest desire is something simple like reading books, he'll pass that deer without trouble."
"Reading books?" Thorin was amazed by Gandalf's naivety. "He's a man, he has shown that many times too, we don't know anything of his heart desires. Man that stubborn has to be passionate, he'll never get out!"
"You need to trust me on this" Gandalf said calmly. "I know how to judge character."
"Character maybe, but heart no. Send me in, there's nothing my heart desire but to bring them back!" Thorin ordered him.
"No" said Gandalf sternly. "I would trust you if you weren't foolish enough to ran through night like this alone."
"I wasn't alone, Dwalin and Bifur will be here in the moment, they went other way around" he said irritated. "Now will you send me in?"
"Not on that side" Gandalf got up upset. "Deer always resides on the side further from the moon. I'll go and get them, they are wise enough not to sleep but fear can find you awake too. You stay and watch them, they'll wake up soon, don't let them fall asleep."
He was gone before Thorin could argue. He looked at sleeping forms.
"Please come back" he whispered looking at Fili and Kili but they didn't move. He sighed not wanting to think of the outcome where he would have to carry on without their bickering and laugher.
"Lovely" master Baggins suddenly said and Thorin rushed by his side.
"Did you wake up?" he asked kneeling beside him but master Baggins was still asleep. "Talking out loud is a good sign" he continued to talk to him. "It means you're still in control of your body."
"More beautiful than anything" said master Baggins and Thorin grabbed his hand.
"Whatever it is, whoever it is, it isn't real, none of it is real. If you stay much longer you'll die in there. Find Fili and Kili, remember, Fili and Kili, bring them back" he pleaded and master Baggins frowned.
"Your voice is different, it's harsh and strong, like you're mad at me" he said with concern on his voice.
Thorin cursed inwardly and tried to control his voice.
"I'm not mad, I'm grateful for going after boys. Remember, you came in to find Fili and Kili, not to wander off into sweet illusion. Snap out of it, it's not real, it's a dream!"
"Of course" master Baggins murmured. "Reading, give me a book to read, anything!"
Thorin shook his head waiting, of course it wasn't a book his heart desired.
"That's unreadable!" he shouted. "Fili, Kili, there's no time for this, now it's not time, it's never time. Fili, Kili! They are…"
With that his voice trailed off and he became still. Thorin knew he went further in. All he could do was hold his hand hoping it helps, he squeezed it with his both hands thinking how small it was. It seemed it has no power but it held his life. Thorin hoped Gandalf is right.
"You can do this" he said quietly. "They'll listen to you, they are smart enough."
The time dragged on, it seemed like forever but finally Fili moved, and then Kili too, they coughed and moaned.
"My head" said Fili.
"I'm sick" said Kili.
But Thorin ignored them, he looked at hobit's face.
"Come on" he whispered "you can do it, it can't be so convincing to feel real, come back."
With that master Baggins took a deep breath and slightly opened his eyelids.
"You're back!" he said with relief and smiled.
"Oh no" he closed his eyes. "I'm still sleeping, now I have to find another veil, and it isn't easy to cross through it."
"No, you're awake, you're not dreaming" Thorin reassured him.
"You always say that" he sighed. "But it must be dream you're smiling, you wouldn't smile at me like that" he sat up and started to look around searching for veil.
"No, you really are awake" Thorin said again. "Look" he tapped his pockets but they were empty so he reached in his hair and took out his braid. "Read this."
Master Baggins just looked at his hair not moving.
"Now I just know I'm dreaming" he said flatly. "And I will be stuck this time."
"Just read the inscription on the cuff" Thorin got impatient, he wasn't feeling like slapping him after he saved his nephews.
"Inscription?" master Baggins leaned forward. "I can't read it, it's dwarfish."
"Yes, but you can read letters, they don't sway and disappear" Thorin insisted.
"True…" master Baggins said slowly but then suddenly jumped away from him pulling his hand out of Thorin's. Thorin had forgotten he's holding it. "I'm awake!"
"So are Fili and Kili" said Thorin with a deep sigh. "Thank you Master Baggins, you seem to always deliver."
"It's nothing" master Baggins frowned and looked at Fili who was moaning with his head in his hands. "They look like they need help" he said and went to their side.
Thorin stayed in place watching them knowing that when he moves he'll yell his lungs at them. Before that he let himself a moment of peace, moment of gratitude that they are still with him.
So lets see what did Bilbo dream about ;)
