Chapter Eighteen: Butternutt
The rest of the evening was left un-resolved, both Tori and Jade were too scared to mention Patrick's misunderstanding in case they say the wrong thing. Although that left both of them wondering the same thing; "Where is this relationship going?"
So by the time they were alone in their hotel room they began voicing their thoughts.
"Where are we heading?" Tori asked, being the first to actually say anything. Jade looked down at her feet and realized that she didn't exactly have an answer.
"What do you mean?" Jade asked, although it was a rhetorical question because she knew what Tori meant.
"I mean… where is our relationship going? Do we move in together? Or get married? Or you know…" Tori trailed off.
"Well… Isn't it a bit too soon to be having this conversation? We haven't exactly been together that long!" Jade pointed out.
"I am aware of that, Jade. I am also aware of the fact that we are both in our late thirties… pushing forty… we don't exactly have time to wait around" Tori reminded her.
"Please don't remind me! In my mind we are in our early twenties!" Jade joked; Tori raised her eyebrows and placed her hands on her hips.
"Okay… I understand that we aren't getting any younger but does that mean that we have to rush in to anything?" Jade wondered, she moved closer to Tori and placed her arms around the tanner woman's neck and leaned in close.
"Can't we just do the fun stuff?" Jade wondered, whispering in her girlfriend's ear. Jade moved closer to Tori's lips and began to kiss her softly. Tori kissed her back for a second before coming to her senses and pulling back a little bit.
"Jade… I know it'll be easy to just 'Do the fun stuff' like you said but we don't do easy, remember? Ever since we first met it was dam hard to get you to even like me as a friend… We have children to consider here, we have to set an example for them!" Tori said, as she began pacing around the room.
"Tori! What example do we have to make here? That they should get married after being with someone for a short time? That they should hate the person they love before they get together with them?" Jade asked.
"Well, no… but Jade that isn't what I meant!" Tori sighed.
"Look Tori. I'm not saying that I don't want to be with you because believe me, I do! It's just… I was married once and look how that turned out… Of course I hope it would be different with you but I rushed into that relationship too. I was too stupid to realize that I was making a mistake until it was too late. I don't want to make that mistake with you!" Jade said but it didn't help matters much. Tori's nostrils flared and Jade could have sworn she saw smoke coming out of her ears.
"So marrying me would be a mistake? Is that what you're saying?" Tori accused.
"No. That is definitely not what I am saying. I'm just saying that because we have been in this relationship for a short period of time… I don't want to jinx it. We're in the honeymoon faze, it won't stay like that forever! We have so many firsts to experience together. Our first big row, Our first weekend alone, Our first picnic… the first time we say 'I love you'…" Jade explained.
"I think we can cross one off of that list" Tori joked. Jade shook her head and sighed.
"I guess this is our first big row... Should we pause it so we can celebrate?" Jade mused.
"No... We need to have this discussion" Tori sighed, as much as she wanted to take Jade's offer she knew that they needed this talk.
"I guess you're right... I hate it when you're right!" Jade sighed.
"Well get used to it, West!" Tori said, trying to sound intimidating.
"So... If I have to get used to it does that mean you're going to be around for a while?" Jade wondered.
"That's the plan!" Tori admitted.
"Okay then, Discussion over?" Jade wondered. Tori nodded.
"Girls, we just want to know why you told Patrick that we were going to get married?" Tori asked, Jennifer and Alex the next morning at breakfast.
"We didn't!" Jennifer pointed out.
"Well why does he have that idea in his head then?" Jade asked.
"He must have overheard us talking... We were just saying that if you got married it would be cool! That's all!" Alex explained.
"So... Are you getting married?" Jennifer asked, eagerly.
"Not in the foreseeable future" Jade said, as she looked over at Tori and smiled.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Jennifer asked.
"I see someones been spending too much time with Cat!" Jade joked.
"What your mother is trying to say. Is that We're not at the getting married stage yet... but when we get there you two and Patrick will be the first to know!" Tori explained.
"Vega" Jade said, they had just come back from skiing and were alone by the fireplace, Tori turned to see a thoughtful look on Jade's face.
"Yeah?" Tori asked softly, taking Jade's hand in hers and rubbing circles across Jade's hand with her thumb.
"We've both been through a lot with previous partners... So I hope you'll understand..." Jade started but stopped mid sentence as she thought of a better way to word it.
"What is it Jade?" Tori wondered.
"Sorry... It doesn't matter" Jade sighed, there was no way in Jade's mind that she thought she could say the words she'd been thinking without offending Tori.
"Tell me Jade, I won't be upset!" Tori protested, reading the pale woman's mind.
"It's just what we were talking about earlier... You know the conversation about the firsts we still have to encounter together" Jade explained. Tori's face turned into a quizzical one, wondering what her girlfriend was going to say.
"Go on Jade" Tori urged.
"The thing is... I don't want to say it yet... I don't want to say the big words unless I know for certain I mean them... The thing is I really do think I'd mean them if I were to say them out loud but... It's like my words are frozen and I can't get them out because I'm scared Tori... You may not believe this but I do get scared sometimes" Jade explained, Tori's heart melted a little bit and she wasn't sure if it was in the good way or the bad way.
In Tori's mind this was an almost love confession even though it was technically not one but Tori was flattered because it meant that she and Jade were actually going somewhere and moving forward.
"Let's come up with a new word!" Tori suggested with light in her eyes, Jade smirked.
"Oh yeah, What word would that be?" She challenged coming back to the Jade West, Tori knew and ... well let's not jinx it yet...
"Butternut!" Tori suggested, Jade smiled.
"Tori, You do remember that, that was a word we were supposed to use if something went wrong?" Jade asked.
"Yeah, but it was also a word that you said when nothing was really wrong... Remember?" Tori reminded Jade.
"How could I forget... That was good acting on my part!" Jade teased and although Tori knew that at the time she had suffered for it she knew it was now a time they could look back and laugh about it. Tori leaned in closer to kiss Jade when they heard someone clear their throat. The two reluctantly moved apart to turn and see who their interrupter was.
"What's up Beck?" Tori asked, sweetly.
"I'm sorry to interrupt guys but can I talk to you about something?" He wondered.
"Sure" Jade sighed but Beck ignored her.
"I know you said that you weren't going to file a law suit against the hospital but I did some research... and I really think you should" He told them, handing them a stack of printed paper filled with information. Jade and Tori looked at each other before turning to the paper.
"Beck this is a lot of research!" Jade said, flipping through the pages that she now noticed he'd managed to staple together.
"I know, the thing is the whole situation bothered me and you know how much I care about you both... So I began digging and there are so many things I found wrong with what I found out that I had to do more research" Beck explained.
"Well... What did you find out?" Tori asked.
A/N: A little bit of a cliff-hanger... Kind of. I hope you liked it? Let me know in a review thank you for reading! :)
