Title: A Christmas to Remember
Disclaimer: I do not own InuYasha and Co.
Summary: "Tell me Higurashi, did you and the mythological Lord have tea together?" Her teacher asked sarcastically. "No professor, The Lord of the Western lands and I never had tea together, although we did spend Christmas together." was her simple reply. S/K
A/N: Three more chapters left. Then back to updating the story! Hope you guys are as excited as I am.
"You've got to be kidding me!" Cringing at the cramp in her arm, she glared at her opponent in anger. An opponent that were simply an object. Let out an exhausted breath, she looked at her friend in annoyance.
"Why don't I get someone to help you with—"
"I've got it Eri. Besides, it's just a Christmas tree." Kagome grumbled while readjusting her arms and debating on how to pick up the tall and heavy box that contained a fake 7-foot Christmas tree inside.
It was just a tree—not even a real one. She should have been more than capable of simply picking up the dang thing and placing it in the cart. Yet, as she tried to pick up the box once more, she let out an irritated huff as she realized that she would not be able to accomplish such a task without asking for help.
"Ma'am? Can I help you with that?" A deep voice asked suddenly while Kagome angrily looked at her friend Eri. Her friend had not even cared to listen to Kagome's response, and had gone ahead and found someone to help.
"I should have been able to get it in the stupid cart at least." Kagome mumbled under her breath frustrated at herself. She had managed to survive demons trying to kill her, but somehow could not even get the stupid tree in her cart.
If that wasn't embarrassing, she didn't know what was.
"Kagome, it's two feet taller than you." Her other friend Yuka attempted to make her feel better.
Ignoring the comment, she watched the Christmas tree make its way into her cart. Turning to thank the man that had helped her she instantly froze.
What the hell?
What was it about today?
Had this day been deemed 'Meet All Youaki' Day?
Had she not gotten the memo?
Frustrated, she wondered what made today special. How was it that she went years without sensing any Youkai but suddenly they were all around her? Staring at the man's face for a bit longer, she nearly snorted in annoyance. What was it about nearly all the Youkai that made them so appealing to the eye? Was that requirement with them?
"Is there something on my face?" The man asked curiously while grinning ear to ear. Blushing, Kagome realized what it had looked like. To be fair, he had just helped her with the Christmas tree from hell.
"Oh shoot, no, sorry—I mean, thank you!" Kagome babbled away nervously.
Slightly confused, she began to use her powers as she had done in the Feudal Era. Yet, no matter how hard she tried, she simply couldn't figure it out. Why was she able to suddenly sense Youkai, but couldn't figure out what breed they were? How had she known that Shinji was an Inu, yet not what this man was? Eyeing him once more, she wondered if he was attempting to hide his identity.
Then it clicked.
"Were you sent to follow me!?" She hissed in a low voice while glaring daggers at the man. Clearly, that was the only thing that made sense in this situation. Why else would there be another youkai right next to her?
Yet, the amount of surprise that was clearly on his face made Kagome cringe. Or not. Trying to read his aura, she realized that it held no deceit. Bracing herself for all sorts of reactions from him, she got the one she never expected—laughter.
" While you're decent eye candy, I am married" The Youkai responded in a playful tone causing Kagome to turn different shades of red at once.
"Are you okay?" Eri whispered in her ear while nudging her a bit. Apparently, she was not okay. In fact, everything about today was completely wrong. When she had gone back and forth between this time and Feudal Era, she had never once sensed a Youkai in the future that implied that they lived here. Yet, suddenly, after years of the Bone Eater's Well being sealed off, they instantly began appearing in her life?
Something was clearly off.
"Hey, we should probably get going. The roads might be getting bad with all the snow." Eri suddenly stated with concern but also impatience written all over her face. Nodding, Kagome began to follow her friends out of the store after giving the mysterious Youkai a nod of thanks.
As her friends and she stood in the checkout line, curiosity finally got the best of her.
"I'll be right back!" Kagome told her friends as she dashed back in an attempt to find the Youkai that had helped her with the tree. Quickly glancing in several isles, she finally spotted him standing next to a gorgeous woman who seemed to be contemplating on different dish sets. Walking up to the couple, she noticed the man glance up in mild surprise when he realized who she was.
"Look—this is going to sound incredibly stupid but curiousity got the best of me. I don't know if the universe is playing a sick joke on me—but I have to know." While trying to think of the right way to ask such a question, she noticed the Youkai woman raise a brow in curiosity.
Then she narrowed her eyes and stood a step back.
"I'm not going to hurt you!" Kagome all but shouted but cringed at the expression the woman was giving at her.
Had she sensed that she was a Miko?
"Hurt us?" The man asked with humor once again in his tone. "Why would you think you would—" he began but stopped when he heard whatever the woman had whispered under her breath.
"Miko?" He whispered in a confused tone while staring at her in almost as much shock as Kagome was feeling.
"Yes, I am but—"
"I was unaware Miko's were still around—well, ones that actually had power."
"Trust me when I say I thought you—well, Youkai in general were extinct!" Kagome whispered under her breath while mentally screaming for her heart to stop beating so fast.
"Why are you here?" The female asked while being much more guarded than the male.
"I can sense what you are, obviously, but I just can't pin point it." Kagome tried to explain. When the male raised a brow, Kagome huffed out in irritation.
"Dog? Wolf? Fox? Cat? What are you? She inquired curiously. "I used to be able to sense what everyone was."
"And yet you said that you did not think we existed mere seconds ago. Your stories do not add up, Miko." The woman stated coldly with narrowed eyes.
Dammit. How could she explain what she had mean,t without sounding crazy? Lowering her head in defeat, she couldn't help but cursed her luck.
"Kagome? We're ready." A voice interrupted her once again. Kagome turned around to find Eri standing there with a bored look on her face. Turning back to the couple, Kagome stared at them with longing. If any youkai were alive, was it possible that certain otherYoukai were as well?
Closing her eyes happily, she smiled.
As she left, all she could think about was her kit and a possible Daiyoukai. After all, if anyone survived—it would have been those two. As snow fell down from the sky, she let out a wishful sigh. Perhaps, she would not be forgotten after all.
Perhaps this Christmas would be different from the rest, and maybe—just maybe, she could really get a bit of happiness after all.
A/N: I don't know if anyone realizes this but in less than 24 hours, I've revised eight chapters. Not much was done other than tinkering with small things and making sure it flowed.
