Chapter Twenty Six: Lost Camper
"Jennifer's missing?" Jade said, filing the half-Latina in and they both rushed to get dressed. Tori took the phone from Jade and listened to Andre's frantic words.
"Andre calm down…. Keep looking for her Jade and I are on our way… I'm sure she's fine" Tori said, the last part was just as much for her as it was for Andre and Jade. Tori hung up and gave Jade a much needed hug.
"She probably just got lost… by the time we get there I'm sure she'd have turned up" Tori reassured Jade. They both hoped Tori's words would be true as they rushed out to the car and sped to the campsite to where they all had been camping.
"How did this happen?" Jade asked Andre as soon as they caught sight of him with Alex and Patrick. They were in the campsites parking lot and Tori and Jade had arrived a few minutes ago.
"Jennifer said she needed the bathroom and I sent Alex to go with her, they both knew where it was but Alex came back and Jennifer didn't" Andre explained.
"How long has she been missing?" Tori asked, she placed a hand on Jades shoulder and gave her a look that said; 'Breathe, we'll find her'.
"About an hour" Andre admitted. Jade's eyes lit up with fury.
"An hour?! She's been missing for an hour and you didn't think to call us?" Jade demanded to know.
"I'm sorry Jade. I know you're mad... look we just didn't want to worry you over nothing. Macy and I thought if we called you and she jus turned up straight after that we'd have worried you for nothing and we know you've got a lot on your plate..." Andre explained.
"What if she's had a fall and the time you spent not wanting to worry us has actually lessened her chances of surviving?" Jade sobbed, Tori pulled her in a deep hug.
"We'll find her Jade. Whatever's happened she'll be fine. Jennifer's strong just like us" Tori said, rubbing circles against her back.
"Alex... you saw Jennifer last. what happed exactly?" Tori asked, turning to their other teenage daughter.
"That's the thing... She won't tell us!" Andre said.
"Alex Vega! Tell us where your sister is now!" Tori said, raising her voice and looking at her daughter with a 'You'll do as I say' look.
"I'm sworn to secrecy... I can tell you though that she's fine!" Alex admitted, Jade sighed.
"Alex just tell us where Jennifer is. She could be in danger for all even you know." Jade said, the tears had all but gone now as she'd realised this was just teenagers playing games now... it wasn't her daughter being lost in the woods. Alex sighed and she faltered.
"Okay, fine. Ryan showed up" Alex admitted, Tori and Jade looked at each other with sheer panic.
"What Ryan... as in your ex Ryan?" Andre asked Tori. Tori nodded.
"Why didn't you tell us this Alex?" Andre asked, he seemed hurt.
"Andre why don't you go back to your camp with Patrick and we'll call you when we find her, Okay?" Tori asked. She didn't want Patrick to miss out on something he'd enjoy just because his sisters were taking risks. Andre nodded and he and Patrick walked back to the camp leaving Alex alone with her very angry mothers.
"So Ryan showed up? What happened after this?" Jade asked.
"He wanted to go for ice cream" Alex said.
"Alex please just cut to the chase" Tori said.
"Okay well he wanted us both to go at first... to get to know each other but I said no. Jennifer on the other hand wanted to she said it was as if she had her dad back and she wanted to give him a chance to be the kind of dad her... or rather what my dad had been to her... you know before he became an alcoholic... well she told me not to tell anyone but she told me they were just going to the ice-cream parlour down the road" Alex said.
"Okay, let's go there" Tori suggested. Jade nodded and the three of them got into Tori's car.
Jennifer's eyes widened in shock when she saw Jade and Tori walk in with Alex. Ryan turned round to follow Jennifer's gaze and his mouth dropped.
"Tori." He said.
"Look Ryan I understand that you want to get to know Jennifer but you can't just show up un-announced and not even give me and Jade a heads up" Tori stated clearly unimpressed with her Ex.
"Mom. I want to get to know Ryan" Jennifer complained.
"And we understand that Jen, we really do but Ryan here has to go through proper channels to arrange that and how did he even know where you were? Did you even think about that?" Jade asked. Jennifer shook her head and then turned to Ryan.
"Yeah how did you know where we were?" Jennifer asked, her hands now placed firmly on her hips.
"I uh... umm..." Ryan stammered, his face started to go red and the girls eyed him suspiciously.
"Did... you... Oh god did you follow us?" Alex asked.
"No... Of course not!" Ryan said standing up.
"Then explain how you knew we were there?" Alex demanded.
"I overheard your mom on the phone to Andre and I was the one who originally told Andre about that campsite. He used to go there for inspiration... I just took a chance" Ryan explained. Jennifer and Alex visibly relaxed seemingly believing what he was saying.
"Whether or not that's true Ryan next time you want to get to know our daughter's then you have to call us first. You need to give us some time to figure all this out" Tori said.
"Okay. I accept your terms." Ryan said. He placed a 20 dollar bill on the table and left.
"Jennifer! You scared us half to death! What were you thinking?" Jade shouted but gave her a hug anyway.
"I'm sorry. I just thought..." Jennifer mumbled.
"you thought you could replace the dad you grew up with? but Jennifer it doesn't work like that. Yes you were switched at birth but even so no one biological or not can replace the family you have!" Tori said joining in on the hug.
"C'mon let's go home" Jade said. They all followed her out towards Tori's car.
