Chapter Twenty-Seven: Figuring things out
By the time they got back to Jade's house it was late so Tori and Jade sent the kids up to bed. It was coming up to midnight and Tori and Jade were in the kitchen drinking much needed coffee. They'd been trying to figure out what to do about their current situation for the past hour but nothing useful had come up yet.
"So what are we going to do about this?" Tori asked. Jade shook her head, this was a very unusual situation for them both and neither of them could even begin to figure out the right way to deal with this.
"I don't know… I'm… we're both a little out of our depth here, Vega" Jade admitted sadly. Tori sighed, knowing that it was very unlikely that either of them were going to be able to sleep tonight with this weight hanging over them.
"All I know is we need to talk to Jennifer… I don't know what made her think she could replace her father like that!" Tori said sadly, Jade nodded.
"I'd have to agree with you there… You know I keep thinking where did I go wrong? Was it my fault that she thought she could disregard Thomas like that?" Jade said. Tori wrapped Jade in a tight embrace and leaned back so she could look into Jade's eyes.
"You've done nothing wrong! Don't blame yourself for this, Okay?" Tori reassured her. Jade nodded.
"I guess you're right" Jade sighed. Tori kissed her sweetly on the lips.
"Of course I'm right! This whole switched at birth situation is new territory for all of us. We're all dealing with it in our own way… and Jenn… she just needs us to talk to her… she's just confused right now. I mean she's a teenager" Tori said. Jade nodded.
"We'll talk to her tomorrow… now about Ryan… What do you want to do about him?" Jade asked. Tori scrunched up her nose at the thought of her distant Ex.
"I don't know… I mean if the girls both want to see him… I don't think Alex is too keen but if that's what they want, I don't want to stand in their way but Jade at the same time. I don't know if we should trust him" Tori admitted sadly. Jade placed her hand on Tori's which was now resting on the table and squeezed it.
"I don't like how he went about things… but maybe we could do supervised visits… I mean I know the girls are very stubborn and probably wouldn't like the idea but it couldn't help to try could it?" Jade suggested. Tori nodded.
"Yeah that could work. One of us with them at all times. It certainly leaves less to worry about… and god knows we've had our share of worries in this lifetime!" Tori said.
Jade smiled at the woman in front of her, she laced their fingers together and gave Tori's hand another squeeze.
"We'll get through this" Jade said confidently.
"I know" Tori said, smiling right back at her.
"I love you so much!" Jade said, pulling Tori in for a lingering kiss. Tori beamed back at Jade feeling fireworks and butterflies all at once.
"I love you too" Tori said back, returning the kiss.
The next morning Andre turned up with a very happy Patrick. Jade gave her son a hug and gave Andre a polite nod.
"How'd it go?" Jade asked.
"It was so much fun! We sang camp songs, roasted marshmallows…. Can I go again mom? Please?" Patrick asked. Jade nodded.
"Of course you can, just as long as it's okay with Andre and Macy" Jade agreed.
"Of course it is!" Andre said, Patrick smiled and gave the musician a high five before running off to get to his X-box.
"I'm sorry about last night Jade" Andre said, Jade shook her head.
"Don't worry about it Andre, It wasn't your fault…" Jade said.
"Have you spoken to Jen yet?" Andre asked.
"Not yet… we're planning on talking her today… we're a little out of our depth to be honest" Jade sighed.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Andre offered, giving her a small smile.
"No, I'm okay… we'll figure it out… bit thanks Andre…. I really appreciate it!" Jade said sincerely. Andre smiled.
"No worries Jade. I better get going now but good luck for today and tell Tori I said hello" Andre said. Jade nodded
"I will. Bye Andre" Jade said.
"Bye" Andre said turning back in the direction of his car.
"Are you ready?" Tori asked Jade as they stood outside the girls room that morning. Jade gave her a nod.
"Yeah. I think so. Are you?" She turned the question back on her.
"I suppose so" Tori admitted. They knocked on the door and waited for the girls to say; "Come in" and then walked right in.
"I think it's time we had a talk" Jade said to Jennifer. Jennifer turned her attention to Jade.
"Yeah you're right mom. I'm sorry... you know about going behind your backs like that!" Jennifer said.
"That was very dangerous for you to do... and you put your sister in a difficult situation not to mention walking off without telling Andre where you were going! but that's not what we came to talk to you about" Tori said.
"Oh" Jennifer said.
"Jen. What made you think you could replace your father?" Jade asked, Jennifer seemed to freeze at that.
"I...uh... don't know... I miss him a lot, I do but after finding out he was never really my dad... I just thought it would be great to get to know my real dad... you know" Jennifer admitted. Jade shook her head.
"Of course he was your dad! He loved you to bits, I know my marriage to your father didn't work out and he had some issues but he loved you and Patrick and if he was still here he wouldn't have loved you any less knowing you weren't biologically linked. No matter what happens you can't replace family members or friends. It's important to us that you know that! Both of you!" Jade said, she didn't want there to be a chance of Alex doing the same thing somewhere along the line.
"I know that now. I'm sorry" Jennifer said.
"Good." Tori and Jade said together.
"Can I still see Ryan?" Jennifer asked.
"Tori and I have agreed that you can see Ryan as long as one of us is with you... you two Alex but you don't have to" Jade told them.
"Thanks Mom, Thanks Tori" Jennifer said giving them both a hug.
"But that's not all. You are grounded for two weeks for running off and telling your sister to lie for you... and Alex you're grounded for a week for lying to Andre and us." Tori told them.
"Okay, I guess we deserve that" Jennifer agreed.
