"Well, your faith was strong, but you needed proof!
You saw her bathing on the roof;
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya'!" Jasper sang deeply, staring into Alice's eyes.
We all sang a soft melody beneath his words as he continued, joining in to sing "Hallelujah" together.
I picked up the next verse with a deep breath and sang more passionately than ever before. This cover held a special meaning in my heart.
"And love is not a victory march, it's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah!" I sang. Then Edward, Jasper and Alice joined in.
"Hallelujah… Hallelujah… Hallelujah… Hallelujah…"
Alice took the last verse, and we all joined one last time as we let the last hallelujah fade from our lips.
The crowd erupted in a scream. I grinned and glanced at Edward. His lips were crooked, and his eyes were bright gold. He looked statuesque in the moonlight, like an angel sent from above.
He was my angel.
It had been 5 years since we last played publicly together. The family decided to meet us for New Years in Las Vegas where we had been living, and Alice suggested a random pop-up show at a local bar. Little did we know, but people still remembered our band, and they showed up in droves; filled with excitement, selling out the show in a matter of minutes.
"Thank you for joining us this New Year's Eve. We couldn't have asked for a better turn out." Edward spoke to the crowd. They cheered and whistled, and we all laughed.
"Who's ready for the new year!?" Alice asked, trying to be heard over the group of fans. "Well, we got a little less than half an hour to go!"
I glanced at Jasper and felt for his mind. My shield stretched, and I leaned on his calming demeanor to help smooth the fractious anxiety I felt. The next song would be rough. We had never played it for a crowd, let alone the rest of our family.
Edward and I had moved to Las Vegas after Kate and Garrett left. The band dissolved, and we were okay with that. But that didn't mean we stopped writing together. Edward and I had been doing small shows around town, playing in front of the Bellagio fountains for tips, and the occasional karaoke night to get out of the house. Las Vegas forced us to live the night life due to the constant sun, but we managed. I'd actually grown to love the small city with big dreams. It sprawled in every direction away from the famous Las Vegas Strip, but deep down it was just a small town with regular people just struggling to get by like everywhere else.
Jasper pushed a little courage toward me and it shook me from my deep thoughts.
Right. Music.
"This next song will be just the two of us," I said, gesturing toward Edward.
The fans cheered again, and Edward picked up the acoustic guitar. We both sat on the box drums, facing each other. It was an intimate song.
I cleared my throat, closed my eyes, and the crowd grew silent.
"Little do you know
How I'm breaking while you fall asleep.
Little do you know
I'm still haunted by the memory.
Little do you know
I'm trying to pick myself up piece by piece.
Little do you know I…
Need a little more time."
I opened my eyes and stared into the liquid gold sitting inches from me. Edward strummed the guitar's first notes and I took a deep breath.
"Underneath it all,
I'm held captive by the hole inside.
I've been holding back
For the fear that you might change your mind.
I'm ready to forgive you,
But forgetting is a harder fight.
Little do you know I…
Need a little more time."
"I'll wait! I'll wait!" Edward's voice rang out clearly in the moonlight, responding to my last words.
There were no stage lights at the Beauty Bar. It was an outdoor venue behind a bar, but the full moon was more than enough light to cast beautiful shadows across his face and dance across the stage.
"I promise you don't have to be afraid,
I'll wait.
Love is here, and here to stay.
So lay your head on me."
Edward's voice was so real and filled with pain.
"Little do you know
I know you're hurting while I'm sound asleep.
Little do you know
All my mistakes are slowly drowning me.
Little do you know
I'm trying to make it better piece by piece.
Little do you know I…
I love you till the sun dies." he sang gently but so raw.
I reached out for him, but his fingers strummed the guitar. My hand fell and we sang together in harmony.
One chorus down, one to go, I told myself.
You're strong, Bella.
His voice echoed in my mind and I let my shield snap back around myself.
It was warm and comforting, like a soft blanket wrapped tightly around me. We had practiced letting my shield stretch around him without being overwhelmed by others' thoughts. I could choose to take his power or not, and what thoughts I heard, if any at all. Las Vegas and our solitude had been good for us. But the pain still ached at the bottom of my stomach.
Something was still wrong or missing.
I tried to regain my focus and noticed Jasper staring at me intently. He could feel my confusion and despair. I reined in my shields and released them from around my family, leaving me alone within my bubble. Jasper raised an eyebrow, but I rejoined the last chorus and focused on Edwards' hands and guitar.
As the song came to a close, the crowd roared once more. I took a deep breath and reached out for Edward. He took me in to his arms, swinging the guitar behind his back in one quick motion. We held our embrace for a long moment before slowly letting go. We held hands and turned to face the fans. A soft smile escaped me and I took the microphone with my free hand.
"Enough sappy new songs, how about an oldie but goodie to get this place jumping before those fireworks go off!?" I said loudly with as much enthusiasm as I could fake. Inside, something felt off.
Jasper, Alice and Edward took their places behind their instruments and I took up center stage. Alice would play the piano for this song. She had been learning the various instruments in hopes of one day reuniting our band. She skipped to her seat and looked poised and ready to strike.
I chuckled softly and spoke, "Here we go, boys and girls."
The guitar and bass twanged loudly with their riffs and the crowd screamed. They hit the bridge and the music came to a standstill.
"I tried, to kill the pain! But only brought more!"
"So much more," Alice whispered behind me.
I ripped the microphone from the stand and walked from one end of the stage to the other. The fans started jumping up and down and a grin played across my face.
"I lay, dying, and I'm pouring,
Crimson regret, and betrayal!
I'm dying! Praying! Bleeding! Screaming!"
The words echoed from the speakers. I squatted down, the hem of my dress brushing the stage floor. I sprang back upward, jumping higher than I probably should have, and swung my head back, my hair tracing a long dark arc as it whipped about.
I landed with a thud on the old wooden floors of the stage and tilted my head down, facing the crowd.
"Do you, remember me?
Lost for so long!
Will you be on the other side?
Will you forget me?!"
As I screamed out the odd structured chorus, my stomach sank again.
It was an odd but familiar human feeling I'd been having more and more recently. It felt as if all hope was gone, and all that was left was despair and darkness.
It felt like the day he had left, all over again.
Jasper leaned against me, still playing his bass guitar, and I realized I had stopped singing. I quickly found my place and picked up in the middle of the last verse.
"Will I be denied? Christ! Tourniquet! My Suicide…"
I slowly bent down, my hair covering my face as I let the last words echo through the venue. Alice played the last few haunting notes on the piano as Edward and Jasper flanked me on either side. They lifted me gently to my feet and I held my breath. Suddenly, the warm, sharply metallic scent of blood of so many humans in the outdoor space hit me all at once, and I couldn't focus on anything but the sickly sweet venom pooling in my mouth.
I turned and ran from the stage, grabbing a bottle of water as I leaped from the risen platform we had been performing on. I sat in the dark corner behind the merch booth just outside our RV. I poured the water into my mouth, swishing it around before spitting it out.
The attempt to rid the venom from my mouth helped, but the residual taste still lingered.
So did the smell of blood.
Edward appeared above me and I looked up.
"Bella? Are you alright? What is it?"
"It's happening again. I don't understand this, Edward." I sighed and swished more water. The warm liquid was refreshing against my cool skin and tongue.
"Do you want me to get Jasper?" Edward shifted on his feet, trying to hide his mild discomfort.
"No. Finish the set. Only one song left. Do something from Virulent Disease. They'll love it." I replied.
"Alright. Why don't you wait in the RV?" Edward suggested.
I nodded and retreated to the familiar scents and surroundings. I could feel his eyes on me as I left, but I didn't look back. With my improved hearing, I could make out the whispers from the crowd. They were confused, concerned, and selfishly wishing I would return. I sighed and closed the door of the RV behind me, taking a seat in the over-cushioned oval chair by the window. I pulled the blinds down and closed my eyes, trying to shut out the noises and human blood scent.
"Alright, how about a few reasons to welcome the new year?" Edward said to the crowd, and I could just picture the grin on his face at his own pun.
Everyone cheered and screamed. I could hear fireworks being prematurely set off in the distance. New Year's was less than five minutes away.
The opening piano notes to The Reason began and a slight smile spread across my face. This was his anthem to me. His explanation. His apology. His wishes and fears. This was the song that he was playing when I first realized that he still loved me. That he never moved on.
We'd had our difficult times in Vegas, since we left our family behind. Our dark times. Our arguments. We weren't the perfect couple, but we loved each other.
Desperately.
Irrevocably.
As the song came to a close, the fans screamed, and we could hear people counting down from twenty. I got up, opened the door once more, sat on the steps of the RV, and looked up in to the sky.
"Thank you! From all of us in Beautiful Disease, thank you! And have a Happy New Year!" Jasper spoke loudly above the chanting of numbers.
"Ten, nine, eight, seven…" the crowd said together. Fireworks began to burst in the sky above us, and suddenly the air was filled with smoke, lights, and falling embers.
There was nothing like New Years in Las Vegas.
I felt my hands tugged forward and I scooted off of the step I had been sitting on and in to Edward's arms.
"I love you, Isabella Swan."
"Happy New Year!" Las Vegas seemed to scream in unison, and the sky was swimming in beautiful lights.
They danced across our skin, shimmering gently like diamonds. I wrapped my arms around Edward's neck and let out a deep sigh with a faint smile on my lips.
"And I love you, Edward Cullen."
"Say it again," he teased, and I smiled up at him brighter this time.
"I love you."
Several people began singing Auld Lang Syne together, and the song grew louder as more and more people joined in.
...
If you've ever been in Las Vegas for New Year's, you know to avoid the strip with your own vehicle if at all possible. They shut down the main avenue and barricade all streets surrounding it in the middle of the afternoon on New Years' Eve. Having lived here for 5 years, we knew to expect to be stuck at the venue until at least 4am.
We visited with fans for the first few hours, signing merchandise, telling stories and pretending to drink along side them. By 5am we were able to pack up and head home, the lingering smoke and embers long since faded in the sky.
"Should we unload everything in to the garage?" Jasper asked, glancing at Alice, then Edward.
"It will be fine in the trailer along the side of the house. We can worry about it later." Edward replied as he set a few of the bags down by the entry way.
"But what if we want to play or write tonight?" Alice exclaimed, sounding almost concerned.
Edward and I chuckled, "Then we'll just use the spare instruments in the den." I replied.
We all settled in to the living room, Carlisle and Esme joining us last. There was a long pause before anyone spoke. Of course, it was Esme who broke the silence first.
"The show was really great."
"Yes, I particularly liked the changes you made to Bring Me To Life. The crowd seemed to really enjoy it." Carlisle added.
"Yeah! And the headbangin' Bell's was awesome up there! Way to rock the house, sis!" Emmett exclaimed, pumping his fist in to the air.
We all laughed, and I smiled at the big child-like man that I'd missed for 5 years. He was the closest to a brother-like figure I'd ever had.
We sat, all smiling for a moment before the topic was finally brought up that we'd all been circling in our minds.
"Bella?" Carlisle asked. "How long have you been… getting these… spells? For lack of a better word."
I sighed deeply, crossed my legs and leaned forward. I had been waiting for this to come up.
"It comes and goes when Edward and I are performing. Only when we are out in the public. Certain songs seem to trigger the… sensation." I explained.
"Can you describe it?" Carlisle asked.
"Like my stomach drops out, mixed with waves of hopelessness and fear... sometimes even…" I paused, unsure if I should include the scariest part.
"Bella?" Jasper asked, probably concerned by my uncertainty he was sensing. "What is it?"
"Rage."
Everyone's eyes flitted around the room at one another before settling back on me.
"Do you feel like you're losing control?" Carlisle continued.
"No!" I said, perhaps a bit too enthusiastically. I didn't want them thinking I was losing my mind or going to hurt anyone. I wasn't a newborn anymore. "No, I… I can control myself. But," I paused once more. "But I do get a blood thirst I have never experienced. I don't understand it."
"That is unusual." Carlisle said.
"Is something wrong with me?" I blurted. I couldn't hold the fearful thought inside any longer.
"Bella, nothing is wrong with you," Edward said, trying to comfort me. But his opinion wasn't the one I was looking for.
"I don't think so, Bella." Carlisle started. "But I would like to try a few things in the coming days to see if we can recreate the sensations and perhaps track your mind waves. I'll have to find some equipment. But try not to worry too much on it. We'll figure it out."
"Ok…" I sighed and looked down, fidgeting with my lip ring between my teeth.
After another long silence, Rose finally spoke. "You know, I still don't understand why you chose Las Vegas to live in. I mean, you're stuck inside for almost 16 hours a day. And why do you play like street performers? You don't need the money, Edward."
Edward and I exchanged smirks. "We just enjoy playing for an audience. Whether it's our music or just covers. Sharing music with the world makes us happy. It gets us out of the house." Edward replied. "Plus, Bella seems to really enjoy people watching." He chuckled and glanced at me again.
"People are just so random!" I exclaimed. "They drink, they party, they let loose. It's amusing to watch. I'll have to take you down to Fremont Street one night and make you people watch with me. It gets really interesting around midnight when all the street performers are in full swing and people are in costumes."
We spent the rest of the early morning talking about the uniqueness that is the city we chose to live in. It wasn't our only stop on our journey after we left Alaska, however. We stopped in Chicago for a while, and Edward showed me where he grew up. We spent Christmas there one year before leaving in the spring.
From there we went to New York, mainly because I'd never been. Edward wanted me to see anything and everything. We spent a summer driving back west across the country before we finally landed in Las Vegas. We enjoyed the nightlife so much, we just stayed. We bought a house, built a music studio in the den, and wrote music during the day, and learned the city inside and out during the night. Some days, I wished I was still human just so I could enjoy the sun, the luxurious pools and day spas, and the famous foods of every country around the world. I often felt I was missing out on so much, but I never shared that with Edward.
The fact that he left in order to keep me safe and human never left the back of my mind. A part of me still hurt, in fact. But I understood now. We'd talked, argued, made up and argued again about the topic many times. Part of the meaning behind Little Do You Know was actually the pain he caused me by leaving. Most people seem to assume its about infidelity, but that's the wonderful thing about music – it can mean whatever you need it to mean to you.
Music had brought us back together. It had healed us in many ways. I just wanted to share that magic with as many people as I could.
"Bella?" Alice called from the music room.
"Yes Alice?"
"Do you feel like joining us in the den? The boys and I were just going to try out a few new tunes." She replied.
"Sure. I'll be there in a minute."
As I stood, I felt the familiar sensation once more. My stomach lurched, my knees almost buckled, and I felt hopeless and afraid.
"Carlisle!" I cried.
Everyone ran in to the room and circled around me. Edward and Jasper lifted me to my feet and Carlisle looked into my eyes, examining them.
"This has never happened before. At home, I mean. What's happening to me?" I said, the fear thick in my voice.
"I don't know, Bella. Try and just stay calm. Take deep breaths and try to focus on each inhale and exhale. In through the nose, out through the mouth." Carlisle said as he reached for his medical bag by the chair.
"Bella…" Jasper said suddenly. I could hear concern in his voice, and so I turned and looked into his eyes. They were scared, too. "Bella… I think I feel it too. And it's not coming from just you."
Suddenly, Alice froze and turned toward the front door. Her eyes glossed over as a vision flashed in her mind. I focused and drew her in to my second shield, taking her power as my own. That's when I saw her: Dark, long, mousy brown hair, bright eyes and a softened face. She looked so lost and scared. She was still so young.
"Alice, what is it?" Carlisle asked, concerned.
"It can't be," Edward said quietly as he, too, saw the familiar girl in Alice's mind.
We all jumped when there was a knock at the door. The odd sensation left me, and I was standing still, staring at my own front door. I glanced at Edward, then Alice. It couldn't be her. I watched her die.
Esme slowly walked to the door, waited a moment and then slowly opened the door. She gasped and raised her hand to cover her mouth in disbelief. She, too, saw what we had just seen but in a vision. She was real. She was standing on my front porch.
Esme lowered her hand and reached it out to the young girl standing in front of her. The girl just stared at Esme's hand, uncertain what to do.
Once more, it was Rose who broke the silence.
"Bree?"

Happy New Year! I've missed you all so much!
Chapter song question: In the last 6 years of music, what's a new song that reminds you of Bella and Edward? Perhaps I'll work it in to the story!
