Astoria stood there for a moment. Her eyes surveyed the room. She didn't give it much time before she turned on her heel and returned to the nurse's desk. She placed her palms far apart on the counter. If she was in her own body, she would have had to slightly bend to do that, but in Dr. Rey's body, she could barely even do it.
"Where's Malfoy?" she demanded.
The nurses seemed taken aback by the tone. Astoria narrowed her eyes. Although quiet, she was used to getting what she wanted. Again, she had to remember that she was to act as happy-go-lucky Dr. Rey. She cleared her throat and tried again. "Mr. Malfoy. His room is empty."
A nurse with black hair and nearly-matching eyes seemed suspicious. "You discharged him a few hours ago. How can you possibly forget already?"
Astoria had the feeling that she was being completely seen through. "Um. Right. It's been a long night."
Before she could give the chance for the nurses to reply to her, she began to walk quickly down the corridor so she could leave the building. It had only been a couple of hours. She shouldn't expect him to report to her immediately after leaving. She was being unreasonable. Regardless, there was something in the pit of her stomach that didn't quite feel right.
By the time she got back to their apartment building, Astoria had grown taller and her hair grew straighter. It didn't take long for the transition to go back, although the clothes she wore suddenly felt immensely tight. She returned to her own flat to change into something that fit and then walked quickly to Draco's place. She knocked with purpose and stood there, rigid. When there was no answer, she knocked harder. She couldn't fathom where else he would go outside of home after being aloud out. Astoria wondered for a moment if he had gone to his parents', but the idea didn't seem right.
She looked around the corridor before she pulled her wand out. She tried the typical 'alohomora' but wasn't surprised when it didn't work. She tried all of her tricks that she could to get in, but to no avail. Astoria wasn't really surprised, but she had hoped for the best. Astoria could feel heat rise to her face in frustration but she tried to keep the emotions buried. There wasn't time for that, and it wouldn't get her anywhere. It amazed her in a way, however. Working as an unspeakable had numbed her to many of the reactions that a normal person would have. Astoria heard awful things every day in her job and listening to prophecies, but yet it didn't seem to affect her.
Astoria didn't know where to go from there. One place that might distract her, however, would contain alcohol. It might not be the best option, but it was the only one she had. When she reached her destination, it was extremely busy. She had to nudge her way through the people to get to the bar. She ordered a double and stole a bar stool from a girl who stood up. She stirred her drink with an absent mind. This was ridiculous. A drink wouldn't work – but many might. She ordered a couple of double shots and downed them before she returned back to her original beverage. It didn't take long until her bladder felt immensely full. She knew where the loo was, and it was lucky for her because it was so busy that she might not have been able to find it anyway. It was difficult for her to get there and when Astoria left the bathroom, she knew that her seat would be taken. Her head felt light and her eyes were fuzzy. Everyone seemed to blend into one another. She took a deep breath. Perhaps this hadn't been a good idea, she thought to herself.
Astoria went to leave, but as she got to the door she almost ran straight into Draco Malfoy. His grey eyes went wide and turned immediately to try to leave but wasn't able to due to the fact that Nora was gripping him by the hand. She pulled him back to her and politely smiled at Astoria.
"Oh, I'm sorry, we must be in the way," Nora commented lightly before she tried to pass by.
Astoria, however, stepped in her way. "Who the hell are you?" it came out of her before she meant to and she surprised herself by her fierceness and impulsivity.
"Astoria - " Draco reached forward but before he touched her, he dropped his hand. "Leave it alone," he mumbled almost out of earshot.
"No." Astoria pressed on. "What is going on here? Why wasn't I ever allowed to see you?" she demanded. She felt an incomprehensible rage and she realized she felt it for everyone.
"Well, I'm not supposed to say anything," Nora said, conspiratorially, "but we have no-access lists made by patients and, well…" she trailed off.
Astoria's focus returned to Draco and her gaze was intense. "You put me on a … on that list?" she didn't know whether to feel hurt or angry.
Draco opened his mouth, but again Nora spoke, "I wasn't even supposed to tell you that much. Can we go by?"
Speechless, Astoria stepped aside. She scowled and just as they passed, Draco grabbed Astoria's wrist. "I didn't put you on any list."
It was all he managed to say before he let go and was led away. Astoria stood there with the spot where he had touched her still warm.
