The smoke rising was the first thing she saw as she approached her home. Black stained the sky, and Kotone knew then that her rush hadn't been for nothing. Only thirty minutes earlier had she met the end of the desert and found the grass once again, but yet a panging feeling in her chest, like something was terribly, terribly off, so she propelled herself forward with fantastic speed, gripping her gut the entire way.

"Please be safe," she whispered to the air, imagining her subordinates, their smiles grinded into her memory.

Taking a single moment to boost her off of a heavy branch, Amaterasu shot forward, her usually stoic expression tinged by her furrowed brows.

-:-

Fear swallowed her whole, dying her face a pale white as she tried to crawl away from the menace that had stolen the face of her lifelong friend.

"Hiromi-chan…" The beast taunted, stalking forward leisurely after the smaller girl, "Don't you want to play?"

Words had long since escaped her reach, as the blonde gripped the ground, searching for some kind of weapon or means of escape. Haru was still in danger, frozen in fear a few feet back. Any moment now, that Akatsuki man could come back and take her. The chunin's thin hand felt around behind her, until she was met with dry dirt. She cursed her lack of luck.

"Come, Hiromi-chan, let me tear you limb from limb!"

Taking only a single moment to think, Hiromi scooped up as much sandy material as she could in her tight fist and flung it at those beady black eyes before scrambling to her feet.

I need to lead her away from Haru!

The chunin swung around and began to run, but she barely made it a few yards away before her ankle and gripped and her face was pummeled by the earth, causing a bright red wound to blossom on her forehead, dripping periodically.

"Aha-ha-ha! Were you really trying to escape from me, Hiromi?" Maiko sneered, "Or perhaps… you were trying to make me follow you, hmm?"

Her cruel eyes landed on the small toddler with silver hair, who finally seemed to gain a grip on herself and was quivering.

"No, please," Hiromi squirmed, "Leave her be! I'm the one you want!"

The green-haired Akatsuki member shot her a merciless glare. Malicious intent shot through the blue-eyed girl's body and she tried to grab the taller woman, but she was too slow.

Haru waddled backwards, eyeing her pursuer anxiously. She was moving raptly, yet not hurriedly at all, calculating every move the child made. As she neared the little girl, she leaned down and yanked a weapon out of a nearby body. It was a dark, thick pole with a sharpened edge that she admired briefly.

"H-hiwomi!" She cried out, "H-hiwomi! Save me!"

Tears swept down the blonde's face and she began to crawl towards the toddler, desperate. She had promised to keep this baby safe, hadn't she?

"D-daddy! Daddy!" Haru let out a scream when Maiko grabbed her by the collar and raised her off the ground, "Daddy!"

"No! Please! Haru!" Hiromi begged.

The murderer didn't spare the chunin a glance, tightening her grip on her weapon and swinging it down with an evil grin.

"Mommy!"

Maiko froze, and Haru saw her face contort for a moment.

"Mommy…?" the criminal murmured quietly.

That one moment of hesitation was all Hiromi needed in order to regain her composure. She leapt to her feet in a hurry, though her body ached from her previous beating, and grabbed Haru out of Maiko's hands.

At the sight of her captive being rescued, the demonic teen let out a scream of harsh fury and stabbed her lance forward. Blood squirted onto her visage.

Hiromi let out a cry, crumpling to the ground nearly immediately with Haru underneath her, shielding the girl with her body. Blood dripped down beneath her, causing the toddler to flail and sob.

The sharpened spear that Maiko once held in her hand was cleanly speared through the blonde chunin's left shoulder, glinting spitefully on each side of her body.

"O-oh god," she murmured.

The agony she felt was incommunicable, and she shivered though the air was unnecessarily hot and humid.

Laughter resounded throughout the dead village, and Maiko seemed to crunch over in amusement. When she had recovered, she wickedly yanked her weapon out of Hiromi's shoulder and gored her again, in a different area of her left arm.

Blue eyes hazed over in pain as she yelled each time she was pierced. Maybe it was because death was at her gates, or because she was hallucinating from lack of blood, but for some reason, the scene before her changed.

A four-year-old Hiromi Sato was gaily walking beside her mother, grasping her hand. Oh, how she loved this walk.

From her house to the academy, her mother would talk to her about the weather, her lesson, and almost everything.

Of course. She was her mom's best friend and vice versa.

The blonde's braid danced behind her as she skipped ahead of her mother towards the academy's double doors.

"Hey, look, Mommy! We're here! Mommy! Mom-"

The girl was shoved to the ground and her eyes widened and filled with tears spontaneously.

"Sorry! Are you okay?"

She looked up and was blinded by the sun. Hiromi put a hand to block it and smiled.

"O-oh, I'm fine!"

The girl in front of her was her age, and her height. Her eyebrows were as black as night, conflicting with her lovely mint green hair. It was long, almost to her knees, and her bangs were perfectly straight.

Her clothes were all bright hues.

Mrs. Sato approached with a worried glance at the green-haired girl, "What happened?"

The mysterious girl frowned, "I'm sorry. I was so excited, I ran into her!"

After a thorough explanation and a kiss to the forehead, Mrs. Sato left and the girl smiled brightly at Hiromi, revealing canines like Kiba's.

. . .

"My name is Maiko Arakawa! What's your name?"

"I'm Hiromi!"

The taller girl in the bright blue seemed to mouth something to the blonde, but she couldn't hear.

"W-what..?"

"….Hi…ro..!"

"What are you saying? What's happening?!"

"Hiro…. Mi!"

"Hello?!"

"Hiromi!"

-:-

The blonde guardian let out a gasp of air, as though she had been holding her breath. As she awoke to reality, she was also reminded of the thick spike protruding from her shoulder, accompanied by many other wounds.

Maiko was nearby with an unhappy scowl on her face, wielding her rapier, but oddly enough, not even looking at Hiromi.

"W-what…?" She mumbled, peering around with blurry eyes.

Haru was unscathed, though bled upon and panicked, but something was amiss… Why were there black spots in her vision? And why hadn't Maiko killed her yet? Everything was fading away...

"Oh," Maiko frowned, "it's you."

Attempting to look around, Hiromi lifted her head, only to reveal a sharp pain in her arm, causing her to let out an airy yelp of agony. Unexpectedly, a cool hand pressed against her good arm, soothingly soft.

Peering up, the blonde let a small smile grace her features.

"K-… Kotone…" She whispered.

The white-haired chunin did not respond, but inspected her wounds speedily, knowing time was of the essence. She grasped the metal pole jutting from Hiromi's shoulder and gave it a slight tug.

Hiromi screamed before panting, "P-please don't pull it out… I … I'm going to pass out from the pain…"

Amaterasu nodded softly, sending chakra into her palms and snapping a piece of the lance off on both sides.

"I don't know any healing ninjutsu," she stated, "You'll have to deliver her to the hospital."

Who was she talking to…? Blue eyes wearily tried to search for another figure.

"Right."

Hiromi found herself being gently lifted up into strong arms and sent a sad smile to her rescuer. Kiba smiled back down at her briefly before setting her upon Akamaru's back, who whimpered and licked the blonde's foot.

"K-kiba!" she grabbed his sleeve, "Don't forget Haru!"

"Wouldn't dream of it. Sit tight, okay?"

The toddler was placed in front of Kiba while Hiromi was in the back. Haru looked a little dazed and was still crying, but besides that, she was completely unharmed.

Maiko loomed nearby, her face distorted in a scowl. Her blade gleamed in the light menacingly and nauseatingly.

"I… I thought you were in the desert," Hiromi murmured to Kotone, who stood stiffly close by, meeting Maiko's gaze with an impassive look of her own.

"I returned quickly. I knew that something was going wrong... If only I had arrived sooner."

Hiromi didn't need to be a genius to know that the usually passive teen was referring to her left arm that hung limply at her side, with blood dripping down her fingertips.

Her blue eyes went wide, "Y-you're coming with us, right, Kotone?"

"Go, Kiba."

Akamaru charged into a gallop and Hiromi wrapped her right arm around her friend hurriedly, turning her head to peer back. Her vision was still so blurry, and the black spots were spinning now, but she saw the white blob that was her best friend and tears flew down her face.

When she couldn't see them anymore, she hid her face in Kiba's jacket. He stayed quiet; though many sounds of chaos surrounded them, he could clearly hear her soft sobs.

He wished to comfort her, to say that Kotone was strong and would show up any moment now with an unconscious Maiko in tow, but even he had his doubts.

Kiba's loyal dog panted as they navigated their way through fallen homes and other debris. The hospital wasn't exactly nearby, but he would die before he gave up on this girl. Akamaru whimpered, questioning the girl's condition, but his master said nothing.

As they continued on, trudging through the wreckage, the brunette thought he saw the infirmary in the distance.

"Hey, Hiromi, look! You're going to be okay," he exclaimed positively.

Almost seconds later, he felt the girl begin to slowly slide off of Akamaru. Kiba reached behind him to try and steady her, but she fell off completely and his dog stopped immediately, letting his partner leap off and leave the toddler in the dog's care.

"Hiromi!" he called worriedly, eyeing the girl's unmoving body.

The teen with the leather jacket turned her over onto her back gingerly, pressing his ear to her chest in order to hear her slowing heartbeat. He flew into a panic.

"O-okay, I have some ointment here! Just hang on for a little longer, please, Hiromi!"

Her breathing was heavy, and she gripped his jacket as though it was his lifeline, as he removed her outerwear to see what he could do about her state.

Skin was ripped, lacerated, hacked and sliced, along with the gaping hole that had a metal pole-like object from one of those 'Pain' guys. Kiba considering pulling it out, but he remembered Hiromi's statement earlier.

"Don't go to sleep, okay?" His voice was shaking, and so were his hands as he cleaned off the incisions that he could reach, "I'll wrap your arm up and-"

A soft hand grabbed his trembling one and his dark eyes filled with grief. Hiromi was looking up at him with a peaceful, sad expression.

"Kiba… Please go," she breathed, "take Haru somewhere safe."

"No, I'm not leaving you here alone!" he argued, "Please, just stay awake a little longer!"

"I can't… I'm in so much pain… Kiba, please… just let me go."

"I won't!"

Silence and realization swept over them like a sheet.

"Hiromi, I'm so sorry," the brunette closed his eyes and gritted his teeth.

"About what…?"

"I'm sorry about the time we killed that old man's cat and I blamed you and Shino for it."

"K-kiba..?"

"I'm sorry about all the times in the ninja academy when I pulled your hair."

Hiromi's eyes were half open, as she listened to her most beloved friend's quivering voice. The black spots were all but gone now, replaced by white.

"I'm sorry about that time you went on a date with Neji and I punched him, but I don't really regret it as much as I should."

The dying blonde let out a small, sad laugh. Her lips were pulled up in a shaky smile, stretched across her pale face that was once pink and rosy with youth. Her blue sapphires were dulled and her lids were sluggishly wavering; she was slowly fading.

"Please, try and hang on a little longer… Hiromi, please…" Kiba trembled.

[Soundtrack Suggestion – 'Quiet Feelings' from Howl's Moving Castle]

His usual appearance of a cheery teen was crumbling at the sight of the girl he admired most vanishing increasingly. He had never before shed a tear in the company of his classmates, but in the final moments of Hiromi's life, he wanted to speak his mind clearly, so that there would be no regrets.

The brunette reached down and took a piece of blonde hair in his hand, caressing it carefully. He pressed it to his lips incredibly gently, and spoke in a soft tone.

"Hiromi, I love you."

Deathly white hands reached out deliberately, laying their cold touch on the tan skin of Kiba's cheek. Her smile revealed her teeth and salty tears trickled down the corners of her eyes.

"I'm sorry I couldn't save you… I'm so sorry!"

"K-… k… ki…kiba…"

Akamaru lagged, standing solemnly in silence and watching the scene from afar. The child on his back wasn't oblivious to her guardian's pain, but was also quiet, somehow sensing the powerful intimacy that draped over the dead girl and the dying boy.

"Th-… tha… thank… you."

The 'you' dragged on in an airy whisper until Hiromi's hands fell back to her sides and her tears subsided, leaving no trace.

Kiba gritted his teeth. He hid his face by lowering his head, allowing his waterworks to drip onto the cold body of Hiromi Sato. He was furious and devastated; angry with the world for letting the love of his life fade in front of his eyes and filled with grief due to the fact that he would spend the rest of his life knowing that if Hiromi had lived, he would've been able to live out his life by her side.

-:-

Amaterasu skidded backwards, wiping the blood off of her cheek with the back of her hand. Her eyes were evaluating her opponent, who held a cynical expression with a devious, sly grin. Her white katana was held out in front of her, gripped tightly with both hands while Maiko swung her own thin weapon lithely with her fingers.

The battle was definitely not in Kotone's favor; she had already obtained various wounds, including a deep slash across her left calf, a laceration across her face and a slit going from her wrist to her elbow. The undernourished skeleton though, only had a graze across the top of her right hand and a few scratches on her upper arms.

White eyes danced across the battlefield, searching for anything to use as leverage against her opponent, who was preparing for another attack, holding two fingers up to her lips.

"Fūton; Kazekiri no jutsu [Wind Release: Wind Cutter technique]."

"Katon: Gōkakyū no Jutsu [Fire Release: Great Fireball technique]!"

A comet of fire, blazing from the lips of a haughty looking Maiko met with the blade of gales, obliterating it upon contact and charged its way to Kotone, who would've made it away unscathed had it not been for the increased power of the jutsu, causing her to yelp in pain as her right foot was seared, collapsing.

As she attended to her foot in a hurried fashion, she glared up at Maiko, "Fire type chakra… How unfortunate."

"Ha-ha-ha." The slimmer teen laughed humorlessly, "Fire type is not exactly our forte, but I had a friend teach it to us just for this kind of occasion…"

Kotone frowned, "More than one type of chakra...!"

"That's right. This is why you'll never be able to stand up to me."

"You're getting a little ahead of yourself, are you not?"

Charging forward, the whitehaired kunoichi swung down her sword, clashing blades with Maiko, who held her free hand up in a hand seal, her cheeks suddenly filled.

Oil?

"Katon: Endan [Flame Bullet]!"

Speeding up her body's movement with a sudden spur of chakra, Kotone ducked, taking her sword with her and cutting across Maiko's legs swiftly, ignoring the scorching heat located directly above her.

The Akatsuki member let out a shout and did an impressive backflip, inspecting the damage the stoic chunin had inflicted.

"YOU (curse.)!" She yelled irately, "YOU'RE GOING TO REGRET THAT!"

Preparing herself for another attack, Kotone firmed her stance and situated her sword in a defensive position. Before the green-haired menace could reach her, though, she froze and looked up at the sky with her black eyebrows furrowed, causing her piercings to shift.

Amaterasu thought of following her gaze, but decided against it as Maiko sheathed her sword and performed an unfamiliar hand seal that the pale queen instantly branded into her mind, thinking of it as a clue to find out what had happened to the Arakawa she once knew.

"As fun as this is, it looks like it's time for me to pull out."

Some sort of black form seeped out of Maiko's eyes, like a thick mist, pouring itself around her skeletal figure.

"A war is coming, Kotone…" She threatened, "Prepare yourself… For next time you encounter us, it'll be on the battlefield with a duel to the death."

The dark jutsu swallowed the green-haired teen and released a cold laugh before vanishing into a thin mist. For a few minutes, Amatearsu held her stance, expecting another attack, before she sheathed her katana and ran as quickly as she could, towards where she saw Kiba and Akamaru gallop off to.

Please, be alive.

[Time skip of Pain destroying the village and fast-forwarding to the revival of the dead because reasons]

-:-

Kakashi didn't exactly know quite where he has, but it felt nice. It was like the feeling you get when you are a kid and you've fallen asleep in front of the television or somewhere else random, and feeling the arms of your parents wrap you up and take you back to your bed, like you were at home after being somewhere foreign for a while.

Maybe that wasn't the proper description, since the silver-haired ninja didn't exactly feel at home. Something, or rather, someone was missing.

Either way, he was able to finally speak with his father, get the answers to questions he was finally able to ask, right? Then he could go back, judging by the green aura that was creeping over him.

"A granddaughter, hm?" Hatake Sakumo murmured.

Kakashi nodded, "She has Mother's eyes, and our hair color."

"And her mother is deceased as you said."

"Yes… You're right… But everyone in the village loves one another; she'll be properly taken care of."

"Huh? Are you sure about that?"

Kakashi eyed his father with a raised brow, but the elder man had closed his eyes with a smile. Realization filled the younger Hatake man and he stood from his seat in front of the fire with haste.

Across the flames, a woman stood, with dark hair that billowed down her shoulders and curled around her pale visage, intensifying her dark eyes and rosy cheeks. She was wrapped in a light periwinkle kimono that was adorned with green accents; it pooled at her feet, but it flattered her figure in a way only she could manage. Kakashi wanted to run to her, but she slowly glided to his side with an unhappy frown.

"I don't think you'll be leaving Haru alone for long! A young girl like her with my genes is bound to need a strong father at her side for her teen years," she prattled on, "And when boys start realizing how beautiful she is, it's game over if she doesn't have you to protect her!"

"Hanako!?"

"One day, she'll actually find a man and marry him; you'll obviously have to be there for that, and she'll have precious little grandchildren that you'll have to spoil but…"

"Hanako..."

"But... she'll need a mom."

Kakashi frowned, "Hanako?"

The brunette continued in a slower manner, "You must remarry, okay? Find another woman who treats you nicely and has blue eyes so that Haru never questions if she's really her mom…"

"Stop."

"You can throw all of my kimonos away so that Haru doesn't suspect anything, and one day, she won't even remember me! In fact, go, fall in love and make her a sibling, Kakashi! That way, she'll never even wonder if she had a different mother…"

"Hanako, stop!"

"Oh, and you'll need to forget about me, too, considering you'll remarry a prettier, nicer woman with no mental issues! Ha-ha-ha! Go on ahead, Kakashi. You can forget about me; replace me!"

Strong arms wrapped around her body in an intimate embrace, causing her to stop her rambling.

"Hanako," Kakashi breathed, "Stop crying."

The mother had never even realized it, but during her babble, tears began to flow freely from her dark eyes and she rubbed them away speedily, but no matter how many she wiped away, they just kept coming.

"I-I'm sorry, just-…"

"Hanako, I will never, ever forget you."

"N-no! Please, just move on! You won't be able to stay here much longer so I just needed you to know that it's okay to forget…"

It was true; Kakashi was fading fast what with the strange green chakra and all, but he didn't let that stop him from holding his lover close to him.

"Hanako, I love you, and Haru loves you. For all of the years she and I are together, I'll never let her forget you."

"B-but!"

[Soundtrack suggestion - 'Moving' from Howl's Moving Castle]

"And you'll always be my wife, Hana."

The use of her intimate nickname caused her to break down, returning Kakashi's embrace with vigor and more tears, "Please never forget me, Kaka! Please don't let Haru forget me! I-I love you both so much and-and-and, I'll never forgive you if you forget about me!"

Her tears subsided eventually and she released her love, stepping away and observing the green light engulfing his entire being.

"Take good care of Haru, alright?" Hanako sniffled, "And be sure not to embarrass her when she gets her period, and spoil her rotten with dresses when she gets old enough to like boys."

"Yes, dear."

The light had finally begun to whisk him away and as he gradually disappeared, Hanako blew him a kiss with a loving expression. But, a small tug on her kimono caused her to look behind her with a soft smile.

"Why don't you say 'bye-bye'?" She said sweetly.

Who in the world is she…?

A small body, inches taller than Haru*, appeared from behind Hanako, dressed in a blue kimono and a green obi. Hair like a mop of a dark grey color was tussled playfully and the child opened his eyes to reveal eyes as dark as Kakashi's, though less wide and shock and thrilled.

"Go on, Eri*."

The little boy wobbled forward, his entire demeanor shy. But he looked up at Kakashi, a big grin spread across his small face and he gave him a sloppy thumbs-up.

"You protect Haru back home and I'll protect mom here, okay?" Eri's grin was optimistic and excited, "I love you, dad, so be careful out there!"

Then, Kakashi was awake, looking up at the blue sky of Konoha, with the awareness of the fact that his son was perfectly healthy and just who he had expected him to be.

-:-

Konan kept a serious expression as she walked; the two levitating bodies wrapped in paper were all that she cared about. She glanced behind her and stopped.

"You can stop hiding now."

A thin teen revealed herself, her expression confused and distressed.

"Where … is Leader-sama? Why … why were people waking up?" She asked quietly.

"He is dead, Maiko, but in his death he revived the ones killed, redeeming his final moments," the blue-haired woman did not hold back the truth.

"W-what?!"

"It is over. Do with yourself as you please."

She continued moving, but the green-haired teen stood stiffly. Her surroundings completely morphed and when she blinked, she in a different area, surrounded by transparent halls. Maiko marched down them in a fury until she reached the main chamber.

Upon arriving, Maiko released a scream. Yami and Hikari were already there, waiting for her.

Yami was just as angry as she was, pacing the room in an eerie manner, levitating above the ground, "I don't understand what's happened!"

Its counterpart sat carefully in the air, its light features delicately glowing, "This is the consequence of your recklessness."

"Shut up! You don't know what you're talking about," The dark being yelled at Hikari.

"But I do. I predicted this all -"

"BOTH OF YOU BE QUIET!" Maiko shouted.

Her voice echoed through the forest outside of Konoha and she realized that she was back. Her mind was throbbing, like it had its own pulse, and she didn't know what to do. While she had accomplished her goal, she had no clue of what to do with herself.

Maiko fell to the ground in a fetal position and covered her ears with her hands. She felt sick to her stomach.

"I don't know what to do…"

"Help me…"

"Yami."

The green-haired teen's demeanor completely shifted as she stood up off the ground and brushed herself off. She looked around curiously before bolting off, only to reveal eyes that were black as night and crying droplets of blood.

What do YOU think? I'm trying to sneak in some Kotone x Sasuke but it seems like he's always away doing other things -_- and I don't want to be that ONE author who just kinda shoves their characters into the main storyline, so I'm hoping I can just kinda slither them into situations c: especially Kotone and Maiko since ya know. Stuff. Either way, you will definitely see Kotone and Sasuke get fluffy :)

Even before you suggested it, I was deadset on allowing Kakashi to see Hanako for a final time, and as a bonus, his son, Eri! Kakashi does go through a lot of crap v.v So that's why I made sure that he saw her! I hope the interaction wasn't too sudden or awkard c:
