Chapter Five: Phenomenon
I slipped on my black ankle boots as I heard Bella beep her horn outside.
I was supposed to go car shopping this past weekend, but of course my mom had just received a job opening at the hospital as a secretary. She apologized repeatedly, but I just shrugged her off. I was more glad that she got a good job that she would enjoy. I could go car shopping any day.
"Chelsea, Bella's here!" I heard my mom shout from the living room. I groaned as I ran around my room trying to find everything for school. I woke up late today so I felt disorientated while I was getting ready. I had already texted Bella that I should be ready by the time that she got here and of course I'm still running around, trying to sort everything out. I should of done this last night.
"Coming, coming." I shouted back finally grabbing my full backpack and racing out the door.
My mom held out a warm pop tart for me to eat. I smiled gratefully at her before grabbing the breakfast, kissing my mom's cheek and heading out the door.
I stopped in my tracks as I looked at the white snow covering the ground. I never really had a problem with snow, but I was pretty sure that it was a little too early for snow to be covering the ground. I slipped on my jacket before hurrying to Bella's truck.
Bella shook her head as I opened the truck door. "Somehow you still look good even though you overslept." She muttered under her breath.
I smiled at her compliment as I looked down at my outfit, it was one of my favorites. "Thanks, Bella."
She hummed under her breath, but she smiled at me none the less.
We pulled into the school and quickly got out of the car. "I'm not liking this snow." Bella groaned looking down at the ground.
I gave her a laugh. She was so used to hot and sunny weather, I was really surprised she even made it to school with the snow on the ground. "At least Charlie put new tires on the truck for you." I commented looking at the said tires.
Bella nodded her head. "Yeah, I don't think the truck would have made it to the school if he didn't." Bella joked, even if we both knew that it was true.
Bella and I were too focused on her new tires and snow chains that we didn't realize a blue van was quickly headed our way. I gasped as I looked up at the screeching- the breaks trying to stop the car and the tires skidding against the icy ground.
You know how in movies, when a near death experience happens, it happens in slow motion? Yeah, that doesn't happen in real life. I could feel my heart stop as I did nothing while the van headed towards Bella and I. I felt like I was in shock because I was having a hard time breathing, and a hard time looking away from the incoming van.
I wanted to try and move out of the way, or at least push Bella out of the way. If someone was going to make it out of this accident, let it be Bella.
I didn't have time to close my eyes, hoping that this was going to end fast. I also didn't have time to register that the hard, cold object that hit me wasn't the van. I opened my eyes quickly to see golden eyes, but not the golden eyes that I was used to. I felt the arms circle around my waist before pushing me clear of the incoming van. Somehow all this happened within the span of 30 seconds.
Another pair of arms grabbed me from the corner of the van as it wrapped around Bella's truck. I felt myself stop breathing for a second time within 5 minutes as I watched Bella and Edward disappear behind the van.
A loud crash was heard throughout the school parking lot, making everyone go silent as they waited to see what happened. I felt the arms disappear from my waist and I barely had time to look back to see who it was that grabbed me out of the way before everyone crowded around the crash.
"I'm calling 911."
"Someone go get the principle!"
"What happened?"
"Bella, are you okay?"
I looked over my shoulder to see Jasper waiting back towards his family that were glaring towards the car accident. I saw Bella stand up from the ground and we met eye contact through the crowd- something was definitely up.
It took six EMT's and two teachers- one that I didn't have and Coach Clapp- to move the van far enough to allow the EMT's to get to Bella. I ran over to her side as they laid her down on a stretcher. I could tell that she wanted to protest really bad, saying that she was fine, but she knew that she wasn't going to win that battle. She blushed in embarrassment when they placed a neck brace on her neck. I was also checked since I was so close to the accident- I would have been closer Edward didn't push me away and Jasper didn't pull me away from contact.
They said that I looked fine, but they thought that I should go to the hospital to make sure that everything was fine. I agreed only because I didn't feel like arguing with the paramedics. I turned the same time Bella looked over my shoulder to see Chief Swan make his way over with wide eyes, "Bella!"
"I'm completely fine Char- dad." Bella stuttered slightly before sighing. "There's nothing wrong with me."
Charlie shook his head before turning to talk to a couple paramedics. Bella was lifted into the back of the ambulance, I quickly followed the EMT's into the back, sitting near Bella's head. She looked up at me with a look that said we really needed to talk. I completely agreed.
I was escorted into the same room that Bella and Tyler- the one that was driving the van- were in. I was sitting on the bed next to Bella, waiting to get checked so I could go home.
I looked up quickly when the door slammed open, revealing my mother. I sighed as I forgot that today was her first official day at the hospital. "Chelsea! Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, mom. I didn't even get a scratch on me. I'm just here because they wanted me to get checked because I was close to the accident." I explained softly, trying to calm her nerves.
She sighed with her hand over her chest, "Oh, hon. You gave me a heart attack." She shook her head before looking over at Bella, "How are you feeling, Bella?"
"I'm fine." She shrugged her shoulders. I could tell that she was getting tired of telling people that she was okay and she didn't need to be here.
"That's good." She sighed before turning back to me, "I have to get back to work, but I'll try to get off a little early so we could get something to eat, okay?"
I nodded my head as she leaned down to place a kiss on my forehead. "Love you."
"I love you too." She smiled before leaving the room as Edward walked into the room.
"Hey, Edward, I'm so sor-"
Edward held up his hand to Tyler and flashed him a smile, "No blood, no foul." He sat down at the edge of Bella's bed and looked at both of us, "What's the verdict?"
"I'm fine, I'm just waiting on a checkup before I could go home." I said shrugging my shoulders.
"There's nothing wrong with me, but they won't let me go." Bella shook her head. "How come you aren't strapped to a gurney?"
"It's all about who you know." Edward smirked jokingly at Bella and I rolled my eyes. His father was the best doctor in this hospital, of course he would get away with things like that. "But don't worry, I came to spring you both."
I looked up when the door opened again, revealing the most handsome doctor that I've ever seen. I could feel my jaw go slack slightly as I looked at the blond male walking towards us. I stared into familiar golden eyes and could only guess that this was Carlisle Cullen, Edward and Jasper's adoptive father.
"So, Miss Lockhart," He said looking down at my chart. "How are you feeling?"
"I feel fine. They made me come for a check up." I shrugged my shoulders lightly.
He looked up at me and smiled softly, "Alright. Were you part of the accident?"
I decided to go for the truth because what did I really have to hide from their father?
"I was until Edward and Jasper got me out of the way." I answered truthfully. I saw Carlisle look over at Edward quickly. They shared a look before Dr. Cullen smiled back at me.
"You must have been very lucky." He nodded his head.
"Yeah, it was crazy." Bella spoke up this time. "He got to us so fast, and he was no where near us."
Again, they shared a look. I slanted my eyes at their motions before getting up from the bed. "Am I all set?"
Dr. Cullen looked over to me before nodding his head with a smile, "Yes, everything seems to be okay from your paperwork. You are free to leave whenever."
I smiled thankfully before looking over at Bella. "I'll meet you outside when you're done?" She nodded her head as her answer.
I quickly walked out to the waiting room and sighed. I really wanted to get answers on what happened today. I could feel a headache just start from all the confusion that I was feeling at the moment.
I stopped at a soda machine to grab myself a Coke. I needed something to drink after all that's happened. Just as I was about to bend down to pick up my drink, another pale arm reached out and grabbed the coke. I followed the arm to see Jasper holding out my Coke for me. I grabbed it slowly not sure what to think about him right now.
"Chelsea Lockhart, right?" I nodded my head at his question. "How are you feeling?" He asked quietly after I took my drink from him.
I was surprised that he was talking to me, since we've never spoken once. "I'm okay." I answered shortly.
"I want to apologize to you. I haven't been the friendliest recently." He said looking down at me. I could almost melt from his voice, which had a slight twang of a southern accent. "I also want to apologize about Monday last week." Was it only just last week? "I wasn't feeling like myself and I didn't mean to frighten you."
"You didn't." I said shaking my head. "But thank you." I nodded my head before turning the other way figuring that was all that he wanted to say to me.
I stopped short when I thought about a question that has been bothering me, "How did you get to us so fast?" I asked not looking back to see Jasper's expression. When I didn't get an answer, I turned around thinking that he left after I asked the question but he was just glaring at the ground when I turned. It was the same glare that he had on his face the first day in History.
He quickly looked up at me once he realized I was waiting for an answer, "I was right next to you, Chelsea." He said shaking his head like I asked a stupid question.
But I knew that he wasn't standing right next to me. Unfortunately for me, I seem to have a Jasper radar that tells me exactly where he is all the time. I can tell you that it wasn't right next to me like he wants me to believe.
"You were standing by Edward's car, on the other end of the parking lot." I said disagreeing with him.
"I think they should check your head again," He said glaring over my head. "I think you might have hit it if you don't remember where I was."
"I just want to know the truth." I said softly.
"What do you think is the truth?" He asked stepping closer to me to keep the conversation to ourselves as a couple nurses walked down the hall.
I glanced around me before turning back to Jasper. His golden eyes were shining with something that I couldn't place. "I know that you and Edward shouldn't have been able to get to Bella and I as fast as you both did. I also know that I probably should have died in that crash since the front of the van was coming for me straight on." I shook my head trying to remember what events happened.
"What do you think happened, Chelsea?"
"I think you both stopped the van from crashing us." I said answering his question.
"No one is going to believe that." He said tightly clenching his teeth.
I shook my head slowly, "I wasn't going to tell anybody."
He glanced down at me in surprise, letting go of the anger that was placed in his intense eyes. "Then why does it matter?"
"It matters to me."
"Why?"
"Because if I'm going to lie for you and your brother, I want to know why."
"Can't you just thank me and forget about it?" Jasper asked impatiently.
I rolled my eyes, "Thank you."
"You're not going to drop this, are you?" Jasper asked looking down at me.
"I just want the truth, Jasper."
"I already gave you the truth."
"Then why don't I believe you?" I asked crossing my arms. He shook his head before turning around and started heading in the opposite direction. "Why did you even bother?" I called out to him, he stopped for a few minutes before continuing to walk away from me. I shook my head before running my hand through my hair, exhaustively.
I walked into the waiting room to see Bella talking to her dad. I looked around the room as I recognized some of the students that went to our school, waiting to here how everyone was. I avoided everyone's questions as I made my way to Bella and Charlie.
"Come on, let's go home before we get ambushed." Bella said looking at the waiting people, ready to ask Bella and I questions.
"I couldn't agree more." I shook my head, wanting to forget about the conversation with Jasper.
Charlie nodded his head before leading us both out to the cruiser. Since my mom was still at work, I was going to go home with Bella and Charlie, Bella and I still needed to talk about what happened today.
"I just can't believe that he was next to us. He wasn't, was he?" Bella asked looking over at me sitting at her desk. I shook my head at her question. She sighed before falling back onto her bed, "I feel like something's going on with the Cullen family."
"I agree. They seem to be hiding something big." I've felt this way since the first day.
"Edward barely denied the fact that I was right." Bella shook her head. "He told me that no one was going to believe that he picked the van off of my legs- which did happen."
"Jasper told me the same thing after I told him that Edward and Jasper were not supposed to be able to save us from that crash."
Bella looked over at me before speaking again, "What did happen with you?"
"I don't really know. All I remember is closing my eyes, waiting for the impact, but it never came. Instead I got pushed out of the way by Edward, before Jasper pulled me away from the van slamming into the truck." I explained thinking back to this morning.
Bella pursed her lips in deep thought before shaking her head again, "I'm starting to get a headache."
I couldn't agree more.
I looked down at my phone vibrating to see that I had a message from my mom saying that she was coming to pick me up from Bella's. We'll have to continue this conversation some other time.
I got up from the desk and told Bella my thoughts. She nodded her head agreeing with me before giving me a hug goodbye. It was an awkward hug, but I could tell that she was trying.
So was I for that matter.
By the time that my mom picked me up from Bella's and we had gotten home, it was 6:56 pm. I didn't really feel like staying out too late for dinner, and neither did my mother for that matter. We both agreed to do a rain-check before heating up leftovers in the microwave. I quickly ate before disappearing into my room to try and relax.
I grabbed two ibuprofen from the bathroom on my way to my room to try and get rid of my headache that hasn't disappeared since I've left the hospital. Once the pain medication started working, I could feel myself start to go under a deep slumber. No haunting dreams to keep me up at night.
