Chapter Nine: Port Angeles
I looked around me, trying to figure out where I was. I jumped backwards when I heard a familiar voice calling my name, "Chelsea." I looked over my shoulder as I saw my dad coming out of the dense forest. His sinister grin was gone from his face. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you." I shook my head as I tried to wake up from this dream. But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get out.
I took a quick step back once my dad tried to step towards me. "I just want to talk." He said but I just shook my head at him. I didn't have anything to say to him.
"Chelsea." I heard another voice say behind me. I looked over my shoulder to see Jasper waiting near the trees. I wanted to move towards him but my dad's voice stopped me again.
"Chelsea, don't you go over there!" He snapped and I looked at him silently. "He's dangerous."
And you aren't? I wanted to say, but my voice wasn't working in this dream. I shook my head at my dad before walking towards Jasper. The closer that I got to him, the more red his eyes turned. I shook my head trying to imagine his beautiful golden eyes, but they weren't coming back.
"Chelsea, run!" I heard Jacob's voice shout. I didn't want to run, I was right next to Jasper. This is where I wanted to be.
"Trust me." I heard Jasper purr lowly in my ear. I nodded my head with a smile at him before I heard a loud growl. Jasper pushed me out of the way as a huge russet color wolf tackled Jasper to the ground.
I couldn't move my legs, no matter how much I wanted them to. I just sat helplessly watching Jasper and Jacob fight. Jacob's wolf mouth opened wide as he was about to bite Jasper's head. "No!"
I shouted as I sat up in my bed. I heard my mom run down the hallway and into my room as I leaned forward holding my head. "Chelsea." She sighed looking at me on the bed. I barely noticed that she was still in her uniform from work at 1:32 am.
"Did you just get home?" I asked looking down at her outfit.
She nodded her head slowly, "I was just about to change when I heard your scream." She paused. "Are you okay?"
"Just another dream." I shook my head at her. I didn't want her to worry anymore than she did. She already had bags under her eyes from her lack of sleep.
"I thought they were gone." She muttered under her breath, but I heard her.
"Me too." I haven't been having nightmares since I've met Jasper, but ever since that story Jacob told me, I couldn't help the nightmares that followed.
"Try to get some sleep okay, baby?" She asked getting ready to close the door. I nodded my head. "I love you."
"Love you too."
I reached over and grabbed my phone from the bedside table and looked at the message that lighted my screen.
Bella: Going to Port Angeles with Jessica and Angela tomorrow, you're coming with.
She sent that yesterday so I assumed she meant today. I sighed before shutting off my phone, hoping to get some much needed sleep.
Jessica drove faster than she probably should have with three other people in her car- but we did get there in record time. It was about four o'clock when we reached the dress shop that the two girls wanted to shop at. I followed unwilling but I didn't have a choice, I had no way to get home.
I sat next to Bella the whole time, watching as the girls tried on different dresses. They started questioning Bella and I on past dates that we went on.
"I've never had a boyfriend or anything close. I didn't go out much." Bella explained shocking both Angela and Jessica.
"What? Why not?" Jessica asked stopping on her way back to the dressing room.
"No one asked me." Bella shrugged.
"People ask you out here," Jessica pointed out. "and you tell them no."
"Well, except for Tyler." Angela reminded quietly and I stopped fiddling with my nails to look over at her.
"Excuse me?" Bella gasped. "What did you say?"
Jessica looked over at Bella suspiciously, "Tyler told everyone he's taking you to prom."
"He said what?" Bella asked as I started laughing. I was just happy that he seemed to move his attention off of me.
"That's gold." I said in between my giggles.
"I told you it wasn't true." Angela whispered over to Jessica. Bella glared at me and I quickly got up from the chair I was sitting on before she could reach over and hit me. I smiled at Angela before helping her pick out a couple dresses to try on.
"That's why Lauren doesn't like you." Jessica mentioned while giggling.
I heard Bella grumble quietly to herself before she spoke up, "Do you think that if I ran him over with my truck he would stop feeling guilty about the accident? That he might give up on making amends and call it even?"
"If that's what he's looking for." I laughed giving Bella a wink over my shoulder. I barely missed her shoe that she threw at me with a scowl. I just laughed harder as she grabbed the shoe from the ground.
The dress section was full of different kinds of dresses, but it didn't take long for both girls to narrow it down to a select few. I encouraged Jessica to get the long black one that really showed off her figure, while Bella liked the blue one. We all agreed on the pink dress that Angela picked up. It made her look tall, almost like a model with her slight figure.
We headed over to the shoes and accessories section when both girls were satisfied with their choices. Jessica disappeared over to the necklaces and bracelets while Bella and I stayed near Angela, watching her pick out shoes to try on.
"Angela?" Bella spoke up looking down at her shoes. They were a pair of strappy pink heels. They would really match the dress that she pick out well.
"Yes?" Angela answered holding out her leg, twisting it back and forth to get every angle.
"Go with those ones." I said with a positive smile. Angela smiled down at me before nodding her head.
"Is it normal for the," Bella paused briefly. "Cullens to be out of school a lot?"
None of the Cullens were in school Monday or today. I tried not to get too upset over the fact that I haven't seen or heard from Jasper since Thursday. But his absent really made me sad in school. I kept thinking that they were probably still on their camping trip, and the rest of the family joined them. That's all I could really fathom- it's either that or I'm going to start believing they were all in my head.
"Yes, when the weather is good they go backpacking all the time- even the doctor." Angela explained making me let out the breath that I wasn't aware I was holding. "They're all real outdoorsy."
Angela didn't question why Bella wanted to know, like we both knew that Jessica would. She just answered the question and left it at that.
"Oh." Bella said as Jessica came back smiling at the silver jewelry that she found to match her silver heels.
The plan after dress shopping was to go out to dinner at a local Italian restaurant on the boardwalk. Since we all managed to get out earlier than expected, Jessica and Angela wanted to go walk along the boardwalk.
"I actually really want to check out this book store that I saw online." Bella mentioned quickly.
Angela nodded, "Okay, we'll go with you."
"No, that's fine." Bella shook her head. "You wouldn't want to sit there while I look at books."
I raised my eyebrows at her.
"Okay." Jessica said hesitatingly. "We'll meet at the restaurant for 6?"
"Sounds good." Bella smiled before walking in the direction that the book store was in.
I bit my lip as I thought about going with her, but she said that she wanted to be alone so I sighed before following after Jessica and Angela.
I sighed as I looked at my watch again, wondering where Bella was. It was 6:12 and Bella still hadn't come back from her bookstore run. She could have just gotten lost in her own thoughts because I know how she gets with books, but there was something in my gut telling me that something was wrong.
"I think I'm going to go search for her." I said looking at Jessica and Angela. They both looked over at me.
"Want us to go with you?" Angela asked.
I shook my head quickly, "No, you two go ahead and start eating without us. I'm sure it'll only take 10 minutes." I smiled. They both nodded their head before Jessica gave me directions on where the bookstore was.
Of course, even those easy directions, I was able to make a wrong turn somewhere. I looked at the street sign that said Center St. before shrugging and following the street. As long as I kept track of where I was actually going, I couldn't get too lost.
Right as I made the turn, I froze and cursed my decision making skills. Two men were leaning against the brick wall. I turned around as fast as I could before turning the corner, but my fear came true as I heard them shout, "Hey!"
I didn't stop moving, I just kept walking the way that I came. I would hit the busy streets soon enough and then I won't have to worry too much.
"Where you going, pretty?" I heard behind me. I didn't want to look back and acknowledge them, but I looked over my shoulder anyways. They were catching up quickly with dark grins on their face. I flinched as his face popped up.
I tried to dodge them as much as I could, but I guess they got tired of the chase. One of the men pushed me into the side of the building and I flinched thinking back to him.
"You think I'm done with that?" I heard my father call out as I was cleaning off the table. I looked down at the glass of wine in my hand before putting on a tight smile.
"I was just coming to pour you some more." I lied trying to ease his anger.
"You want to say something to me, you say it."
"I don't have to say anything." I shook my head, glad that my mom was working late. I didn't want her to get into the middle of this again.
I felt his hand grab my throat before pushing me into the china cabinet. "Don't lie to me!"
"You look like a fun time, beautiful." I tried getting my hold on reality again, but every time I looked up at his smile, I couldn't help but think of my father.
"Please." I whimpered, wanting nothing more than to crawl into myself.
"Look at that," The other man laughed. "She's even begging for you."
I shook my head as I tried to get passed the two men, but they just pushed me back into the wall.
"What do you want from me?" I heard my father shout before he threw me into the living room. I tried to catch my footing, but I tripped landing on the coffee table with a loud cry. "I've apologized over and over again- what more do you want from me?" He kicked down and I felt the pressure of his heel on my lungs.
A loud screech was heard making the two men jump away from me, but I couldn't focus on anything as I sunk to the ground. I didn't even realize tears were streaming down my face until I placed my head in my hands.
"I give you everything!" My dad shouted as he grabbed my hair tightly in his grasp. "Everything!" He threw me back into the kitchen and I slammed into the table. I quickly grabbed the knife that was resting on the table before I turned back to my father.
"Please, stop." I sobbed as I held the knife up to him.
He growled as he grabbed the knife out of my hand and slammed it back onto the table. I felt his hand wrap around my throat tightly, blocking my air ways as the other went behind my head, making sure I wasn't able to move out from his grip. "Smarten up, girl, or next time I will make sure to end your life."
I flinched harshly as hands gripped my shoulders lightly. "No, no, please." I shook my head thinking it was the two men back for me.
"Chelsea, relax, it's me." I looked up at the familiar voice, but I almost wished that I didn't- the glare set in his eyes made more tears fall down my face.
I heard him growl loudly before he helped me up off the cold ground. "Get inside." He pointed to the sleek black car and I hurried to follow his instructions, I just wanted to get home. I watched with silent tears as Jasper stood outside the car. He had his hands clenched into fists before he fast walked back to the car.
He didn't say a word as he started up the car before taking off, almost running the two men over. I felt myself wanting to curl up again, but I knew that Jasper would never hurt me.
"You should put your seat belt on." Jasper said quietly. I didn't have the heart to argue with him, so I just nodded my head before slipping the belt over my body and clicking it into place. "I would also text your friends saying you're fine and you got a ride home." Again, I nodded my head before trying to find my phone. I found it in my back pocket before texting Bella, and Angela that I'm fine and I'm going home with Jasper.
"Distract me so I don't drive back to kill those guys." Jasper growled and I sniffed before trying to think of something to say.
"My mom got me a new Jeep." I whispered unable to get my voice any louder than that.
He nodded his head, "Keep going."
"I was surprised that she had managed to find me a decent car. I've been looking for weeks and all I've been able to find are run-downs." I tried thinking of anything else to say but I was at a lost. "Where are we going?"
"I'm taking you home." I nodded my head at his answer.
"Did you just come back from camping?" I asked thinking about how he wasn't in school the past few days.
"I got back on Sunday." I looked over at him surprised, why wasn't he in school then?
"Then why-"
"I'll explain later." He muttered still concentrating on the road in front of him.
I nodded my head before wiping my cheeks, I could see feel the salty substance on my cheeks.
I looked up as we pulled into an empty parking lot. I looked back over to Jasper but he was gripping the steering wheel tightly and his head was rested on the wheel.
"Are you alright?" I heard him ask quietly. Physically, I was fine. They didn't really touch me besides the fact that they pushed me into the wall. Emotionally, I was a wreck, but Jasper could tell that.
"You already know the answer to that." I finally answered quietly. He nodded his head as he leaned back in his chair, but his eyes were still closed. "How did you find me?" I asked. I wasn't complaining that he did, I was just curious on how.
"I was following you." I guess it should have freaked me out that he was following me around, but I couldn't help but get a nice comfort out of the fact.
"Are you alright?" I asked finally as he opened his eyes.
"It's taking all I have to not turn around and kill those bastards." Jasper growled lowly. "The things they were feeling-" He stopped as he slammed his hands down on the steering wheel. I jumped at the loud noise listening to Jasper's loud breathing. "I'm sorry." He finally said.
"It's okay." I managed to say. "Better?"
"No."
We were silent for a while as we both tried to calm down from everything that happened. Finally, Jasper turned on his car engine before taking off down the street again. I watched as the trees passed by quickly before I brought up a question, "How did you know where I was?"
He was silent for a while before he finally answered, "Edward and I were keeping tabs on you and Bella." He answered honestly. "When he realized that you all split up, we went looking for you. Of course, I had more trouble than Edward did because he at least had an idea that she was going to the book store, you just took off without a location."
"I was heading for look for Bella." I muttered quietly.
He looked over at me, silent in my confession.
"So then how did you find me?" I asked curiously. Jasper looked over at me, debating if he wanted to tell me the real reason or not. "You can trust me." I muttered silently as Jasper's eyes turn back to the road.
"I don't know if I have a choice anymore." He admitted again before sighing. "I was following your scent."
"My scent?" I asked raising an eyebrow.
"Yes." Jasper nodded before his lips twitched upwards. "You smell almost like rainfall and cherry blossoms."
"Interesting."
"My turn." Jasper said and I prepared myself for the question. "What happened with your dad that made you move?"
I wasn't prepared for that question. His loud yelling echoed in my ears and I tried to shake away the memory. "He wasn't a kind man." I answered rubbing my arms slightly where I knew permanent scars were scattered. "He had the worse temper, and he wasn't able to control it."
Jasper nodded as his eyes flashed slightly in, what I can only guess, anger. "Did he ever harm you?"
I paused in my answer, I didn't know if I should answer him or not. I didn't want him to become angry again. But when Jasper looked over at me expecting an answer I couldn't help but blurt it out, "Yes."
He sucked in a deep breath before turning back to the road.
I thought about something that might distract him like I did earlier. "I have another theory."
Jasper's lips twitch as he thought about my other theories, "I hope this one is better."
"I don't know." I answered truthfully as we pulled into my driveway. I looked down at the time to see that it was only 8:02. How fast were we driving?
Jasper and I sat there for a long time, letting each other think before I decided to speak up, breaking the silence, "Would you like to come in?" I asked, knowing that this conversation wasn't over.
Jasper looked hesitant.
"My mom's not home if that's what you're worried about. She's working late tonight."
He finally sighed before nodding his head.
Let me know what you think! Thank you for reading :)
