Chapter Eleven: Interrogations
It was easy waking up the next day to get ready for school. I probably have never been this excited to get to school early on. I made a point to look good today- going as far as to straighten my hair. I wore something cute, but still practical with the weather.
I quickly looked outside and smiled when it was nothing but clouds. I never thought I'd be that happy to see clouds. But clouds meant Jasper and that thought couldn't please me more.
I glanced over at the clock and realized it was time for me to leave. I grabbed my keys off my bedside before running through the house. I barely had time to grab a granola bar to eat on the way. I grabbed a fresh water bottle from the fridge before hurrying out the door.
I stopped in my tracks when I noticed a familiar black vehicle in my driveway and a even more familiar figure next to it. I felt the smile reach my face as I looked at Jasper leaning against the Mercedes. "Need a lift?"
I graciously nodded my head as I walked over to the car. "Thank you." I bowed my head as Jasper opened the passenger side door for me.
Jasper closed my door for me before speeding over to the other side. I almost jumped by how fast he was before I shook my head, "Show off."
He gave me a laugh before pulling out of my driveway.
It was a relaxed silence through the vehicle. I was just happy about being in Jasper's presence. I feel like I still had so much I wanted to ask him, but I didn't want to bombard him with questions so early in the morning. I would wait til History or, if we sit together, lunch.
"How did you sleep?" Jasper asked glancing at me from the corner of his eyes.
I actually slept pretty good last night- no nightmares. "Pretty good." I answered truthfully. "How was your night?"
"Long." Jasper answered back. "Sometimes I wish I could still sleep so my days didn't feel like weeks."
"I can see how that would get annoying." I nodded my head.
"Tedious more than annoying."
I nodded my head in understanding.
We pulled into the school parking lot, and I had to question how fast we were actually going again. I didn't get the chance to think about it much before we pulled into a spot next to a red BMW. I gazed questioningly at the M3, I haven't seen that car in the parking lot before. "It's Rosalie's." I heard Jasper answer over my shoulder.
I looked behind me to see his chest barely an inch away from my back. My heart sped up at the fact that we were this close to each other- though just looking at him can make my heart sped up double time. He gazed down at me with heavy eyes before pulling me closer to his car. I gave him a questioning look before I heard a car pull into the spot that we were just standing.
I noticed Edward's Volvo right away.
"Ostentatious, isn't it?" Edward asked jumping out of the car. Bella was looking at Rosalie's car, so I knew they were talking about the same thing Jasper and I were talking about a couple minutes ago.
"Um, wow." Bella breathed lightly. "If she has that, why does she ride with you?"
"It's ostentatious like Edward said," Jasper began with a tight voice. I looked up at him in question, but he never let any of his emotions show so I couldn't understand why he sounded like he was in pain. "We try to blend in." Bella and I glanced at the three flashy cars lined up, all belonging to the Cullens.
I raised my eyebrows, "Doing good." I said sarcastically making both boy roll their eyes at me.
I felt Jasper's hand on my lower back as Edward and Bella started talking again. When I met eye contact with Jasper, he looked like he was in pain again. I felt him tug the ends of my cardigan lightly, almost like he was trying to get my attention. That's when I realized his eyes were a shade darker than they were this morning. I flicked my eyes over to Bella and back to him almost in a question. He nodded his head and I turned back to the two other people that weren't even noticing Jasper and I's silent conversation.
"We're gonna head in, I still need to get to my locker before class starts." I said trying to break away from the two.
"Okay, I'll see you later." Bella smiled at me while Edward stared at Jasper silently. His eyes narrowed before glancing at me. I heard Jasper growl lightly and I looked at him confused. I felt his hand tighten on my back.
"Come on, Jasper." I said lightly not wanting him to turn his anger to me instead. He nodded his head as I pushed lightly on his chest to get him to move. Bella looked over at me unsure of what was going on but I just continued making sure Jasper was moving away from them.
I lead us into the cafeteria knowing that no one would be in here that early, except for maybe a select few. He leaned against the wall, taking shallow, short breaths. I stayed where I was, no wanting to move and make him any more uncomfortable. "Was it Bella's-" I lowered my voice so that no one would hear us, "blood that set you off?"
He nodded his head, not opening his eyes. "It's extremely potent."
"Are you okay?" I inquired.
Again he nodded his eyes but he opened his eyes this time. They were still a little dark, but back to their usual golden color. "I usually hold my breath so that it doesn't bother me."
"Do you usually hold your breath around me?
"No." Jasper replied honestly. "For some reason, your blood doesn't make me want to rip your clavicle open." I blinked at his word choice and he smiled sheepishly at me,
"Sorry."
I shook my head at him, "Don't be." I waved him off, trying to stop the shiver down my spine. "So my blood doesn't call to you like Bella's?"
"It still calls to me." He broke off our eye contact as he looked straight ahead. "Don't get me wrong; you're blood is still strong. It just calls to me in a different way."
I felt the blush dusting my cheeks as my heart stuttered in my chest. "Why did you growl at Edward?" I asked trying to change the subject.
Jasper paused momentarily before gazing down at me, "Edward can read minds."
I stilled as I thought about Edward reading my mind. There was things in my mind that I didn't want anyone to see. Not even Jasper- Especially not Jasper.
"Chelsea?"
I looked up at Jasper and realized he was still waiting for a response. "Okay," I took a deep breath in before relaxing my shoulders, "how does that take part in why you growled at him?"
"He read my thoughts about having trouble with Bella's blood, so he portrayed his concern over to you." I raised my eyebrow at him, wanting him to explain further. He sighed before continuing, "I told you that I was the newest to the diet in the family. Bella's blood calls to even the strongest of vampires, so imagine how much it burns to be around her frequently."
"I'm guessing it feels like a hot iron was shoved down your throat." I said quietly.
Jasper nodded his head, "Exactly. When Edward saw that I was having trouble, he wanted to make sure that I should be as close to you as I was. He thought that I could ever hurt you." Jasper scoffed like it was some big joke. But I understood where he was coming from now.
"Why was he concerned?"
"Your blood is almost as strong as Bella's." Jasper replied and I must have looked shocked because he laughed a little.
The bell rang for first class and I almost pouted at the fact that I won't be seeing Jasper until lunch. "Come on, I'll walk you to class." Jasper nodded his head, leaning off the wall. I nodded my head before following him out of the cafeteria.
I somehow made it to my classes with girls jumping down my throat. They all had their glares on their face, especially when they saw Jasper and I walking in the hall together this morning. I almost scoffed at all of them, but I just shrugged it off my shoulder. I wonder how Bella was handling the added attention.
"So, you and Hale, huh?" I looked back at the voice to see Derek leaning against the locker next to mine. It was almost lunch time and I had to put my books back into my locker.
"I don't see how that's any of your business." I said as pleasantly as I could, but I was starting to get irritable about all the glares sent my way.
Derek nodded his head, "I see. I was just simply curious because if you two weren't dating, then I was gonna ask you to go out to dinner with me this Friday night."
I opened my mouth to reply to Derek but another gruffer voice beat me to it, "Sorry, she's taken." I looked behind me and smiled gently, but shockingly at Edward.
Derek narrowed his eyes at Edward, clearly not liking that he interrupted our conversation. "Chelsea can answer for herself." He turned back to me, "So what will it be?"
I tried to smile conscientiously at Derek, "Sorry, but you heard Edward. I'm taken." Truth be told, I wasn't exactly sure what Jasper and I were yet, but if it got Derek off my back, I could live with a few accusations.
Derek's narrowed eyes looked at both of us before scoffing in my direction, "Your loss."
I watched as he turned and stalked away slowly, almost like he wanted to make a dramatic exit. I shook my head before turning back to Edward, "Thanks for that."
"No problem." Edward nodded his head. "I read his mind and he wasn't going to take a no for an answer."
I nodded my head in understanding before closing my locker tightly, lock it back up. "Chelsea?" I looked up at Edward again curiously. "I'm sorry about this morning. I didn't mean to seem rude about my accusation. I just didn't want anything bad to happen to either you or Jasper."
I nodded my head before giving Edward a smile, "I'm sure it didn't bother me nearly as much as it did with Jasper." I patted his shoulder lightly as I fixed the strap of my backpack, "You should apologize to him, not me."
Edward nodded his head.
The bell signaling that lunch is started sounded throughout the hallways , and the hallways filled with people. Edward nodded his head at me in a goodbye before taking off to, what I can only guess, find Bella.
I almost jumped when I felt a cold hand touch my lower back. I smiled relieved that it was just Jasper. "Hey." I greeted cheerfully.
"What did Edward want?" Jasper asked looking at the corner that Edward turned into. I thought about telling him about the whole Derek situation, but I knew that he would get mad about it.
"He wanted to apologize about this morning." I said pulling him along to get to the lunchroom. I was hungry from only getting a granola bar this morning. "I told him that he was apologizing to the wrong person." Jasper nodded his head as we walked into the cafeteria. We jumped into line and I watched as Jasper grabbed a bowl for salad before making a picture perfect salad. I almost rolled my eyes at the thought.
Jasper handed the lunch-lady three bucks before sitting ourselves at our regular lunch table. I sighed as I grabbed a cucumber before shoving it into my mouth, "Something else happened that made Edward come over to me." I mentioned quietly, not making eye contact. Jasper waited not-so patiently, but he stayed quiet none-the-less. "Derek came over to me and asked if we were a thing. I told him that it was none of his business. He then proceeded to ask me out on a date, but Edward came over and told him that I was taken. I agreed with him, knowing that it would get Derek to lay off." I took a peek up at Jasper.
His lips were pursed, his forehead crinkled and his eyes narrowed. "Remind me to thank Edward later." He said pushing the salad towards me again, remind me to eat.
I took another bite of the delicious salad before swallowing, "I hope you don't mind that I said we were seeing each other. I know we haven't really talked about anything on that sort-"
"It's fine, Chelsea." Jasper said shaking his head with a small smile. "It's easier to tell people that we are seeing each other than to tell them otherwise."
I bit my lip to hide my giant smile but I nodded at him anyways. I took a another bite of my salad to try and hide my smile further, but it wasn't helping since I could feel the ends of my lips tight in a smile.
"Do you really need to go to Seattle this weekend?" Jasper asked and I pursed my lips, thinking.
"Why?"
Jasper gave me a half smirk, "Answer the question first."
I huffed before going back to thinking. I really just wanted to avoid the dance, and I was going to look around for a vehicle, but my mom took care of that for me. "No, I don't think so."
"Would you like to come meet my family?" I paused at his question.
"What if they don't like me?" I asked biting my lip. I was afraid of meeting Jasper's family. Especially after getting so many glares from Rosalie. I didn't want to end up hated by his family since I was a human.
"So, you're more nervous about the fact that you're not going to be liked?" Jasper shook his head with a chuckle. "Only you would be more worried about that instead of being in a house full of predators that could kill you."
"I know you wouldn't let them hurt me." I said honestly.
Jasper's smile dropped slightly, but it was still there as he nodded his head, "Touche."
"I'll go to meet your family, as long as you meet my mom." I haven't mentioned Jasper to my mom, but I'm sure she'll be excited to meet him once she knows.
Jasper kept my eye contact as we both stay silent for about a minute. "Deal." He nodded his head, relaxing in his chair.
I smiled at him as I held out my hand. He rolled his eyes but shook my hand anyways, sealing the deal.
"Bella will be joining you on Saturday." Jasper said looking over at Edward and Bella's table.
"At least I'm not alone." I gave him a laugh. "On Saturday will you tell me your story?" I was still curious when he said he had a different upbringing than the rest of his family. I wanted to know everything about Jasper.
Jasper took a moment to decide before he sighed and nodded his head, "Yes." I started to smile but Jasper interrupted me, "Don't get too excited. It's a gory story."
"I can handle it." I promised.
Jasper nodded his head like he wanted to comment further, but he bit his tongue.
I started eating my salad slowly again as I glanced around the cafeteria. I could practically feel eyes on my back every time Jasper and I make a move, and it was starting to get on my nerves- much like the first week of school.
"What's the matter?" Jasper asked feeling the rise in my aggravation.
It was a downside of him being able to feel my emotions. He always knew what I was thinking, no matter what. Most of the time, he was polite and didn't mention anything about my sudden waves of depression that I sometimes still got.
"I've been getting glares all day." I said stabbing a piece of lettuce in my dish. I pushed it away from me, finalizing that I was done with it. "Every move I make, some girl's been looking at me, analyzing me. It's starting to make my skin crawl with annoyance. It's almost like trying to get a bug off a spot on your back that you can't reach."
"They're all jealous of you." Jasper answered, crossing his arms on the table and leaning forward.
"I figured."
Jasper shook his head, "Not the reason that you think. They're jealous because you're beautiful." I felt my cheek flare up at the compliment.
"I don't think so, but thank you." I said smiling shyly.
"Trust me." Jasper said pointing to his head, reminding me he could read emotions.
"How does that work, anyways?" I said intrigued now that he brought it up. "Does it work like Edward's does how you can read what they are feeling, like in your mind? Is it on a constant loop?"
"It's different from Edward's because he can read what you're thinking, but he can also hush the voices. He doesn't get anything from it except a headache." Jasper explained. "My power, I can constantly feel what people are feeling. If their emotion is strong enough, I can start feeling the same way." He half-smirked as he looked down at me, "It's difficult living in a house full of vampires that don't sleep that are in love."
I cringed at what he was implying, "I see."
He gave me a soft laugh and I almost melted at the sound.
This time I did pout when I heard the ending bell for lunch sound through the school. Talking to Jasper was definitely the highlight of my day.
Jasper picked up my salad bowl before walking over to the trash. I smiled at him as he placed his cool hand on the center of my back, leading me to my next class.
I couldn't wait for History.
Let me know what you think; thank you all for favoring and following! Love you all.
