I don't own anything but the Lockhart Family.
Chapter Twelve: Complications
I didn't miss the eyes that followed Jasper and I to our seats in the back of the class. This has been happening all day, especially when Jasper would walk with me to and from classes. It surprised me at first when he did, I guess I just didn't expect him to want to walk with me in the hall. Never-the-less, I took the opportunity to get more information about Jasper. Favorite color (sky blue, "like my eyes"), favorite music (anything that suits his mood), favorite animal to hunt (bear or mountain lion, he'll take either or), etc, etc.
I also took notice at the fact that Jasper and I's seats weren't far apart anymore. Somewhere between the week or so Jasper and I have been talking, our chairs have migrated together, almost to the point of our elbows touching. If I just moved the right way, I would be able to make contact with his skin.
I paused in my questioning once I saw a substitute teacher come into the room. "I'm Mr. Peters, I'm subbing for Ms. Gilbert today." He greeted gathering everyone's attention. "Since she didn't write me any notes on what to teach you, we'll be playing a movie." He held up his hands, a movie in each, "Elf or The Bench Warmers?"
The Bench Warmers it is.
As soon as Mr. Peters turned off the lights to watch the movie, I felt a shock ignite passed Jasper and I. I almost gasped as I felt the utmost need to keep contact with Jasper. I shyly looked over at Jasper under my hair, trying to see if maybe he was feeling the same thing. Jasper's golden eyes burned dark and they were staring right at me. I felt my heart stop before restarting in overdrive.
The blood was pumping so fast within my body that it was echoing in my ears. I was almost 100% positive that everyone within a 5 feet radius would be able to hear my heart beat. I tried to hide the blush that resided onto my face from the knowledge that Jasper would be able to hear my heart beat.
The electric shock was circling Jasper and I, and I was sure that if I touched anything metal right now, I would get a shock in my finger.
I almost jumped at the cold contact that I felt on my hand. I looked down at the pale hand, loosing my fist up that was digging into my palm to try to stop myself from spontaneously reaching over at touching Jasper. I felt my heart flutter as Jasper's rough hand held onto mine tightly, the electricity between us numbing to a slight buzz. "You keep digging into your palm like that, you'll draw blood." Jasper whispered huskily.
I swallowed the big lump that formed in my throat before nodding my head silently. I didn't dare try to speak, knowing that if I did, my voice wouldn't survive the sentence.
Jasper gave me a jaw-dropping smirk before facing the front again, making me miss the way he was looking at me.
I tried to focus in on the movie, but the fact that Jasper kept playing with my hand ever so often would suddenly make my heart go into a frenzy. It was the little things that he would do- and I was almost positive he did it on purpose, by the smirk on his face every time my heart fluttered. He traced delicate trails on the back of my hand with his thumb. Sometimes he would randomly give my hand a gentle squeeze and I couldn't help but smile softly.
I looked over at Jasper questioningly when he let go of my hand. I missed the cool touch that he possessed- even though every time he touched me, it felt like my skin was on fire.
The lights turned on, making my classmates moan at the sudden light. "I'll be here tomorrow, too." Mr. Peters said ignoring the protests of the young students. "We'll finish the movie tomorrow."
The bell chose to rang at the end of his sentence, and all the students ran out of the classroom, and I took my time collecting my backpack before standing up with Jasper- who was patiently waiting for me by our desks.
"That was fun." He muttered as we walked out of the classroom.
I gave him a humorless laugh while I gently shook my head. "We have to do that again tomorrow."
I heard his sigh under his breath before he opened the exit door for me. I gave him a smile in thanks before proceeding outside.
"You're unbelievable!" I heard Bella snap before rushing past Jasper and I, Edward in tow. I gave Jasper a laugh before following them towards the cars.
"You were the one who mentioned how I'd never seen you in Gym- it made me curious." Edward easily answered back, making me laugh again.
Bella turned to me with a slight glare, not happy that I was laughing at her misfortune. "Oh, come on, Bella. I remember a time when Edward told you that he wished you didn't find out what he was, and you went and did it anyways." I knew I got her when she paused in her stomping. She huffed- knowing I was right- before going to Edward's car.
Edward looked at me, rolling his eyes jokingly before getting into the car with Bella.
"I recall you did the same thing." Jasper said as we got near his car. I opened the passenger side door before shrugging at him.
"I didn't say I didn't."
Jasper nodded with a faint smile before following me into the car. He turned the engine on before pulling out of the parking lot smoothly.
The car ride was silent besides my constant breathing. It wasn't awkward, it was pretty prefect. Just being able to sit in the car with Jasper without having to fill the void with nonsense chatter. Plus, I think I was all questioned out from today. I also didn't want him to get annoyed with the random questions that I kept asking him. I'll save the rest of them for another day- maybe Saturday.
We pulled into my driveway and I turned to look at Jasper to thank him, but my breath caught in my throat, stopping my movements. I didn't realize that Jasper and I were so close, but here we were inches apart. I took in a shaky breath looking at his golden specs that were starting to turn into a light brown.
I tried to blink to break out of the trance that I was under, but I couldn't seem to pull away from him. The same electricity that happened between us during History was back tenfold. It was even worse this time because we were alone, and there was nothing more that I wanted then to run my fingers through Jasper's blonde locks.
"Chelsea," Jasper whispered with his husky voice again, making chills run down my spine. "You should get inside."
I nodded my head silently, still in the trance but I was able to back up into my seat again. I took another shaky breath before grabbing my back and stepping into the light mist. "Oh, and Chelsea?" I looked down as Jasper rolled the passenger side window down to talk to me. "Tomorrow it's my turn to ask the questions."He didn't give me a chance to answer before he smirked at me and pulled out of my driveway, leaving me with my mouth gaped open. I shook my head before getting inside before the rain started to pour down on me.
"Hey, mom." I greeted setting the dinner plate on the table as she entered the kitchen. She looked at me questioningly, before sat down at the table.
"What's up?" She asked already knowing that I had something to tell her.
"Why would you assume that something was up?" I asked sitting down with my own plate, trying to act natural. "Can't I just make dinner for my lovely mother?"
"Okay, now I definitely know that something's up." My mom laughed before crossing her arms on the table to lean forward. "Spill."
I smiled at my mom before telling her about Saturday, "So, I've kinda-sorta been talking to this guy, and we made a deal for this Saturday. I would meet his family if he would meet you."
My mom sat silently for a while and I bit my lip in anticipation. "Who is he?"
"Jasper Hale." My mom's eyebrows raised in confusion, but I explained further. "He's adopted from Dr. Carlisle Cullen."
"Oh." My mom nodded her head understanding. "Is he as good looking as his father?" My mom gave me a slight smirk and I laughed kindheartedly at her.
"I would like to think he's more attractive." But that just might be my opinion.
My mom laughed at me before digging into her plate, "I'd love to meet the kid that's making my daughter smile again."
It was true, even since I've met Jasper I've been smiling more. It was almost painful to think of how I used to be before the move. The move really was something that I needed in my life.
"Bright and early, Saturday." I informed her and she waved her hand, but I knew that if I didn't warn her, she'd hang around the house in her PJ's.
I woke up the next morning feeling refreshed. I still ran around the house trying to get ready the fastest way possible, but that's all the excitement of seeing Jasper again.
"Morning, baby." My mom said as I ran into the kitchen. I smiled at her as she handed me a pop-tart fresh from the toaster.
"You're a saint." I said taking a bite out of the cookie dough pop-tart.
"I've been told." She said as she brushed my hair over my shoulder lightly. I smiled at her as I finished the pop-tart. "Is this Jasper fellow picking you up?"
"Yes." I nodded my head before I heard a knock on the door. I raised my eyebrows before moving to answer the door. My mom tried to push me out of the way so that she could get to it first but I was still faster. I opened the door glaring at my mother before I turned to see Jasper standing at the door with a small smile on his face. I wasn't expecting him to come up to this door.
"Are you ready to go?" Jasper asked, looking down at my apparel. It didn't look like the best thing to be wearing in Forks, but I did have a jacket to go over it.
My mom cleared her throat, obviously trying to get me to introduce them. I sighed before opening the door wider so Jasper could see my mom, "Jasper, this is my mom Elizabeth." I looked back at my mom, narrowing my eyes slightly, "Mom, this is Jasper Hale."
My mom gushed at him as Jasper held out his hand to shake. I coughed out a laugh as I saw the hand gloves he had on.
"Pleasure to meet you, Ma'am." Jasper said with his slight southern twang and I knew that my mom approved of him.
"He's so nice and handsome." My mom whispered into my ear, unaware that Jasper could hear everything she said. "Nice to meet you too, Jasper. My daughter has said some nice things about you."
"Okay, we're leaving." I interrupted before my mom could embarrass me. I grabbed my jacket next to the door before slinging the backpack over my one shoulder, I pushed Jasper slightly back trying to get into the car as fast as possible. "Bye, mom! See you later!" I didn't wait for her reply before I jumped into Jasper's car.
I sighed as I leaned back against the head rest. Jasper chuckled as he pulled out of the driveway, "You're right. I can definitely see the relation between you two."
"She's crazy." I gave him a laugh as I relaxed. "What made you decide to meet my mom today?"
"Alice." Jasper said like it explained everything, even though it just made things more confusing.
"Huh?"
Jasper gave me a laugh, "I forgot I didn't mention that part. Alice can see into the future." I felt my mouth pop open in surprise. "She saw that your mom would have been disappointed if I hadn't met her today."
"So weird." I whispered under my breath. "Does anyone else in your family have a special ability?"
"Uh, uh, uh." Jasper tsked lightly. "It's my turn today." I groaned while Jasper just smiled lightly.
"Favorite novel?"
"Don't have one."
"Favorite color?"
"That one's hard." I gave Jasper a laugh before thinking. "I would probably have to say red- all shades of red, really."
Jasper nodded his head, "You do wear a lot of red."
"Not today." I said looking at my tan and black outfit.
"No, not today." Jasper agreed before firing off another question. "Favorite genre?"
"Of what? Movies or music?"
"Hm, both."
Our conversations went a lot like that for the rest of the morning. Jasper firing off questions, one after the other, much like I did to him yesterday. I guess this was my payback.
Jasper paused in his questions when the bell rang to get to first period, "We'll continue this at lunch." Jasper said helping me down from sitting on the trunk of his car. I smiled a little at his help before nodding my head.
"How many questions could you possibly have?" I asked jokingly but Jasper looked down at me seriously.
"I want to know everything I can about you. You intrigue me."
I felt the blush reach my cheeks and I forced my eyes to stay forward, trying to make the blush go down. I felt Jasper's fingers slide down my warm cheek slowly before he dropped his hand. "I like it when you blush." Jasper said suddenly as we reached my first period class- Calculus. "It makes you look innocent."
"Gee, thanks." I said sarcastically as I tighten the hold I had on my backpack.
"I'll see you after class." Jasper said quietly pushing my hair out of my face before turning and walking down the hallway. I sighed as I entered the classroom, immediate eyes on my every move- like I said it's been this way since I started talking to Jasper. It's almost like the first week of school all over again.
Jasper didn't end up waiting until lunch to start on his endless questioning. I couldn't remember a time that I have talked so much. I needed to refill my water bottle about two times because my throat was getting scratchy trying to keep up with the questions. Sometimes he would ask simple questions, and other times he asked me to explain why. I felt like I was taking a verbal test on myself.
He asked everything from my current favorite book, my favorite gemstone, favorite vacation spot, where I wanted to visit the most. I was sure that he studied up on questions before he picked me up from school this morning. There was no possible way that he was able to think of these questions on the fly.
Lunch was no different; he was relentless. The only difference is this time instead of asking about insignificant things about myself, he started asking more in depth questions that I had to actually think about.
"What do you miss about Massachusetts?" Jasper asked, watching me as I picked at the salad in front of me that he made me again. Even if he didn't eat human food, he seemed to be well equipped with making it- even if it was just a salad.
"Easy, nothing." I said shoving a tomato in my mouth before I started to explain, "Massachusetts has nothing but bad memories there. I couldn't wait til I got out."
Jasper nodded his head in understanding before continuing, "Do you miss your father?"
I paused in my eating as I heard his question. I shook my head as my mood decreased slightly, "I miss how he used to be, but that man is gone. So no, I don't miss Mark."
"What changed him?"
I really didn't want to get onto the topic of Mark, but I knew that it was going to come up eventually. I sighed as I got ready to explain my story, "Mark Freeman was a regular business man that loved his family. One night him and his brother decided to go out for drinks- Mark's idea. They had fun and forgot about how late it was. They both decided that it was time to go home, but neither admitted to themselves that they shouldn't be driving. They were fine until Mark ran a yellow light and a mac truck slammed into the side of Mark's brother. Mark never forgave himself, believing that he killed his brother. Even though Mark didn't die that night, a part of him did." I picked at the salad before looking up at Jasper. "That's when he changed. It was subtle at first, a few yells here and there. Staying out past my bedtime. And then he got worse as time went on."
Jasper didn't say anything for a while. I stared down at the table, trying not to relive those memories.
"Favorite thing you like to do with your mother?" I sighed in appreciation as Jasper changed the conversation. I smiled thankfully at him, knowing he understood my gratitude before answering his questions again.
History was a treat again. Jasper paused in his questions once Mr. Peters turned on the movie and shut off the lights. Just like yesterday, the same tingling feeling spread throughout my body, making me want to lean over and trace Jasper's features. Before I was able to clench my fists, Jasper grabbed my hand silently. I sighed as the buzzing feeling dulled down again. It was definitely still there, but the immediate need to touch him was gone since I was holding his hand.
The movie was uninteresting as I decided to pay Jasper back with some random spurts of touches to his hand. I gently glided my fingers over his knuckles, trying to memorize the smooth feeling. I felt him shutter a couple times when I ran my fingers directly over his veins on his wrists. I was unsuccessful hiding my smirk when he did this- I was glad that I wasn't the only one that had a react when the other touched each other.
The lights turned back down and I dropped my hand from tracing the inside of his palm. I grabbed my bag at my feet before glancing down at Jasper who still hadn't moved, "Jasper?"
He snapped his gaze to me before getting up silently. I followed him without a word, worried that I did something wrong, or I said something wrong. Maybe I answered a question wrong.
We both got into his car silently and Jasper leaned his head on the steering wheel, still as silent as ever. I really just wanted him to say something, so I voiced my thoughts.
"You don't know what you do to me." Jasper laughed humorlessly. "It's so hard to resist you when you do things you do."
I was the one that stayed silent this time, not knowing how he wanted me to respond. He turned on the car before pulling out of the parking lot. I didn't want to make eye contact with Jasper's piercing eyes so I said quietly as I stared outside the window. I watched as the trees and wildlife fled by us quickly.
"I'm sorry." I said finally, tried of the silence. Yesterday's car silence was good because we both were comfortable. But now I didn't know how he felt, so it was more awkward.
Jasper pulled into my driveway before shutting the car off. "I should be the one that's sorry."
"You didn't do anything." I shook my head as I finally looked over at him with sad blue eyes. "I pushed my boundaries. I'm sorry."
Jasper shook his head with a smile small, "It's not a total bad thing. It's just something that I'm unused to. Especially with a human. I just don't want to make any mistakes. I don't want to end up hurting you."
"You won't." I said shaking my head.
"You don't know that."
"I know that you rather risk your family's secret than let a van crush me." I answered thinking back to a couple months ago. "You won't hurt me."
"I'm trying not to."
It went silent after that. I sighed before grabbing my bag on the floor and opening the car door. No one said anything as I closed the door behind me and climbing up my front steps. Just as I was about to open the front door, I felt a hand grab mine. I looked down at the pale, cool hand before looking up into Jasper's eyes.
"I want to try something, again."
I didn't know what to say, so I just nodded my head as I turned facing him. Jasper stayed where he was for about 2 whole minutes, clearly thinking about what he wanted to try over and over in his head. I let him think it over, trying to be patient.
He sighed before lifting his hands gently and cupping my face, "Don't move, okay?"
I nodded my head again as Jasper leaned down slowly. I felt my breath hitch in my throat the close proximity of us. I thought that he was going to turn his head like he did last time to smell my neck, but my heart skipped when Jasper's cool lips reached mine.
I followed his plead and stayed as still as I could. Trying to calm my erratic heart beat, but it was hard when Jasper's lips were softly on mine.
Slowly he began moving his lips against mine and I closed my eyes, enjoying the feeling of his cool lips on mine. I would have thought they would be hard, but they were surprisingly soft. I slowly began moving my own lips against his, not wanting to test his patience, but also not wanting to miss this opportunity to kiss Jasper- I might never get this chance again.
Jasper pulled away ending our soft kiss. His breathing was as infrequent as mine. His kept his eyes closes and his hands were still cupping my now really warm face.
He opened his eyes softly smiling at me.
"Are you okay?" I asked looking up at him. His eyes were a dark brown instead of their usual golden.
"It's not as hard as I imagined it would be." Jasper smiled down at me. "It's still difficult, and I can't ever lose control with you- but over time, it might get easier."
I smiled gently up at him, "Practice makes perfect."
Merp, they finally kissed! I'm so happpyyy!
