Chapter Fourteen: Confessions Pt. 1
I was surprised to say the least.
Jasper's skin started radiating, almost like a crystal would if you put it in direct sunlight. It was almost too much to look at. I wouldn't say that he was sparkling, but he was definitely glowing. It was easy to point out that he was different; I understood why he didn't go out in the sunlight around humans.
I felt my lips turn up in amusement, "You glow."
Jasper looked at me with a scowl on his face, "More like sparkle."
"It takes a real man to pull off sparkles." I joked taking hold on his hand gently. He rolled his eyes at my joke but followed my lead as I sat against one of the trees.
We settled in a comfortable silence as the sun shined through the trees lightly. It was nice to feel the gentle warm that the sun was providing. I almost feel like I haven't been able to enjoy the sun for a while now. I felt my eyes close against my will as I relax against the tree.
I felt Jasper's fingers lightly trace my hands and wrist gently. "You owe me an explanation." I said quietly almost afraid to break the silence, but I knew that Jasper heard me. I felt the light traces stop and I opened my eyes to see him looking at the ground with a grim look.
"I guess I do, don't I?" He sighed peaking at me from the corner of his vision. "Where should I start?"
"The beginning is always best." I gave him a light smile.
"I was born in Houston, Texas in 1844. I lived on a farm with my siblings and my mother and father. When I was 17, I wanted to go into the army to fight with my country. So, I did." He started lowly.
"But don't you have to be like 20 to fight in war?" I asked confused.
"Correct. I lied and said that I was 20, and I passed and got in. After 2 years of fighting, I was declared Major in the Confederate Army. After a while of being Major, I was alone one night when I came across three mistresses. They were beautiful-" Jealousy sprain into my heart but I shoved it away, by the look in Jasper's eye and the smirk on his face, I knew he caught it. "of course, but dangerous. I didn't know it at the time, and being the southern gentleman I was, I assisted them. Maria was the one to turn me, saying that I would be of great use to her. I was turned in 1863. After three days, I woke up and she explained everything to me and what was happening and why I was turned. I was turned to assist Maria in the Southern vampire wars. She wanted power and she planned to have it.
"After a while, sometime in the 1940's, I got tired of all the killing and the same things and I realized that Maria didn't love me and that she was just using me to build a better army. I met Charlotte and Peter, they were mates, but didn't tell anyone but me because it was forbidden and they would be killed. We left together and after a while, I left them to become a nomad. I was alone until I found Alice and Jackson. Well, they found me." He smiled and shook his head.
"I was shocked to say the least that they would be looking for me and waiting for me, but there they were. It was 1948 when they found me in a coffee shop. The three of us went and found the Cullen's and Alice didn't even give them notice before she started moving in. She moved Edward's stuff into the garage and put her stuff in his room and then explained why we were there. At first they were scared of me, though." He looked down.
I could tell that he was hoping he didn't have to tell me something. I almost didn't want to ask because I knew that whatever it was upset him, but I was too into the story to have him stop now. "Why would they scared of you?"
Jasper sighed as he finally made eye contact with me, "During the wars, when I had to fight newborn vampires, they bite a lot. Whenever a vampire bites you, a scar is left in it's place." He paused to roll up his sleeve. I was confused for a moment before I finally saw it. I had to really concentrate on his arm to see the various sizes of crescent moon shaped scars. "It's a lot easier to see with vampire eyes. I have these scars all over my body, so it brought up a red flag to the rest of the family and a lot of questions." Jasper gave me a crocked smile, "Battle scars."
I nodded my head before rolling up my sleeves, "Just like mine."
I almost regretted showing him my scars, but I knew he wouldn't judge. He opened up to me, it was only fair I gave him the same treatment.
"Your father?" Jasper asked lightly grabbing my arm to examine my scars.
"Most of them." I said quietly. "Others are from myself. I was in a bad place back in Massachusetts. I knew that it wouldn't make anything better, but I couldn't control myself at times."
Jasper leaned down and lightly kissed my arm where the darkest scar was placed, "You'll never have to feel that way again."
