Chapter Six

Never in her entire life had Yang ever thought she witness a single person completely obliterate not one, not two, but three Alpha Grimm with nothing but a rusted up, trashy flagpole. And yet, here she was, standing among her fellow first-year applicants, including her younger sister, all open-mouthed and staring in complete and utter shock at the sight before them.

There, standing before a destroyed valley of broken trees, carved earth, and a pile of rubble that was once an ancient ruin with his "all-mighty" weapon in hand as the ashes of several Grimm scattered through the wind, was none other than the boy who tanked her semblance-enhanced punch like it was nothing and proposed Pyrrha Nikos, herself.

How did it end up like this?

Well, for that we have to go back to when Yang made the biggest mistake of her life. Making eye contact with the entity that would unfortunately be called her partner for the next four years of her life, Jaune Arc.

It was minutes ago that Yang had defeated a duo of Ursa Majors with nothing but her bear hands...Get it? Anyway, there she stood, her twin golden shotgun gauntlets, Ember Celica, smoking from the residue of her firepower as the two carcasses of the Ursi faded away into nothing until there was nothing but herself and the surrounding treeline.

"Well, that was fun." she said to herself, stretching her arms until she heard a nice, loud pop from her left shoulder. "Ooh, been WAY too long since my last session. Gonna have to set up another appointment after all of this is done with." Another pop from her other shoulder was music to her ears as her arms dropped to her sides and she scanned her surroundings. "Trees. Bushes. More trees. More Bushes. So on and so on." she released a sigh as she began wandering in a random direction, making sure to keep her eyes open for any hostiles and future teammates.

Several minutes pass as Yang wandered aimlessly through the forest of emerald, her adrenaline slowly fading away the further she walked from her landing zone. Her lilac eyes moving from side to side as she sighed with boredom. Her skirt billowing in the soft breeze that brushed against her exposed skin the farther she wandered until she broke through the collection of trees and into a massive clearing of pristine, white flowers, all sprouting through the grassland and lying in the middle of the clearing was a collection of craters.

Yang's instincts flared to life as she quickly readied her weapons, checking to make sure they were loaded with ammunition as she walked, cautiously, further into the clearing and closer to the craters that gave her a bad vibe. As she drew closer to the three empty craters, Yang's instincts went into a flurry as the distant sound of rumbling thunder caught her attention. But never in all her life did she expect to see a massive collection of boulders come flying out of the forest and crash in the clearing a few feet from her own position.

Her mouth was agape in shock and her arms laid limp at her sides as she watched the massive collection of rocks and boulders begin to stand, until it eventually formed a humanoid shape. And in the middle of the humanoid rock monster was the tell tale masked face of a Geist, a specialized Grimm that was able to possess inanimate objects at will. But even with her presence known to the hulking Petra Gigas, it still ignored her blatantly as it's face was kept trained on the path of destruction that it had mistakenly created.

Yang's own eyes followed the Grimm's stare towards the path of destruction, her heart thumping a mile a minute as she watched with a mixture of excitement and fear. Whatever had caused the Petra Gigas to come flying through the forest with little effort was definitely something Yang desired to see. Just who or even what could so effortlessly throw a freaking collection of rocks and boulders that must've weighed more than a ton?

Well, as the Petra Gigas's arms shifted ever so slightly as a silhouetted figure raced past the treeline, unseen by Yang's vision as her instincts screamed at her with a furious passion. Her adrenaline pumping through her veins like gas in a motorcycle as her muscles tensed with excitement. Both she and the Petra Gigas waited in earnest for the mysterious figure to reveal itself. Who could be so deathly powerful as to throw a literal rock giant through the emerald forest with ease? Well, Yang was about to see as the figure broke through the bushes of the forest and all emotion drained from her face.

There, standing with his rusted flagpole in hand as the wind brushed his blonde hair back, was the boy who tanked her punch and caused her to very nearly have a complete mental breakdown, Jaune Arc. At first, Yang didn't even want to believe it. She pleaded with the unknown gods, despite not be very religious, to prove to her that the mysterious person who tossed the Petra Ggas was not this tall, blonde, and scraggly-looking boy.

Alas, such a plea fell upon deaf ears as the Petra Gigas raised it's boulder-sized arms into the air while Jaune remained unfazed beneath it's massive towering shadow. As the Grimm's arms lowered with incredible speed, Yang's instincts sent her into a flurry as she pushed off with her right foot, making sure to empower her legs and waist with her Aura as she raced to save Jaune from death.

Luckily, Yang was able to make it just in the nick of time, holding her palms up to meet the Petra Gigas's strike and with the added strength from her semblance, she remained mildly unscathed. And with an added blast from her gauntlets, aimed directly at the Geist's mask, to which it then moved it's arms to protect itself, Yang was then able to grab onto Jaune's jacket and make a break for the forest. The sound of rocks grinding upon rocks echoed into their ears as Yang literally dragged Jaune by the collar deeper and deeper into the forest and away from the massively possessed stone giant.

Once she had determined they had made their escape safely away from the Petra Gigas, her hand unlatched itself from Jaune's collar, causing him to stumble and trip onto the ground. Rolling himself onto his back, Jaune came face to face with a very pissed off red-eyed Yang Xiao Long. Her veins visible near the corner of her head as sparks of aura sparked off of her luscious blonde hair.

"WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!?" she shouted at the boy still lying on the ground before grabbing his collar and yanking him up to eye level. "Do you realize that you could've died back there?!" she continued to shout at the silent boy.

"But-" he attempted to say only Yang to silence him with a single look,

"But nothing!" she interrupted. Sighing, she released her grip on Jaune's collar, dropping him to his feet as she attempted to calm herself down. "What were you even thinking back there?" she asked, crossing her arms as she watched Jaune scratch the back of his neck, avoiding her red eyes. "Well?" she asked, as Jaune remained silent.

"I was thinking it looked like a strong opponent so...I wanted to fight it." he said, looking bashful under the heated gaze of Yang's red eyes.

And it was in that moment that Yang realized what had just happened to her. As her red eyes reverting back to her natural lilac as her mouth hung open and she stared into space, completely oblivious to the world around her as she realized what making eye contact with this boy had meant. Yang plus Jaune equals eye contact. Eye contact equals partners. Yang plus Jaune equals partners.

But before she continue to contemplate every mistake she'd ever made that could warrant such bad karma, the thundering sound of a the Petra Gigas echoed throughout the forest and it was drawing closer and closer to their exact location.

"Finally!" shouted Jaune, twirling his weapon in excitement. "Time for some fun!" he shouted out, lifting his foot to walk towards the thundering echoes when Yang grabbed his wrist and preceded to drag him away from his quarry.

"Save the fun for another time, lady killer!" Yang shouted as she dragged Jaune away from the thundering echoes.

But even as the two of them ran through the forest, the echoes of thundering footsteps only continued to grow louder with each step they took. Finally, the two of them were able to break through the massive plethora of trees and soon found themselves standing at the edge of a massive valley with a menagerie of ancient crumbled ruins. And there in the center of the ruins was a group of her fellow first-years, all fighting against a large Deathstalker while a gigantic Nevermore sailed effortlessly through the azure sea above.

At the sight of her little sister, Ruby, getting knocked away by the Deathstalker's stinger, Yang's hand unclasped itself from Jaune's wrist, releasing him as she and him raced off to save her little sister. But before she could get any further away, the line of trees where they had exited exploded with a humongous force as broken tree trunks and dirt flew across the valley and there stood the Petra Gigas.

"Oh, come on!" shouted Yang, grabbing Jaune's wrist and rocketing off to where the group of still fighting the Deathstalker and the Nevermore as the Petra Gigas chased after them.

As the two neared the ensuing battle with the Petra Gigas hot on their tails, a white glyph magically appeared beneath their feet and soon the two of them were shot off into the air above the ground just as the Petra Gigas's arm narrowly missed them by a hair. At the apex of their sudden flight another white glyph appeared before them and once again, the two of them found themselves rocketing off towards the group at breakneck speeds.

Luckily, the two of them were able to avoid being crushed by the velocity and meeting an unjustly end via smashing into the ground when a length of black ribbon wrapped itself around their bodies. And with a powerful tug the two were able to safely roll upon meeting the ground and remain unharmed though not without some light scratches and bruising that would heal thanks to their aura.

Unfortunately, it would not stop the three mega-sized Grimm that were currently charging towards them. But when several more white glyphs appeared around the group, forming a massive wall of frozen water, blocking the three grimm from attacking them. Both Yang and Jaune turned back to see Ruby comforting a kneeling Weiss, her breath ragged from exhaustion and her muscles tense from overexertion.

"Ruby!" shouted Yang, pulling her little sister into a tight embrace. "I'm so glad you're okay." she said, smiling as Ruby's face began to turn blue due to lack of glorious oxygen. Once Yang had reluctantly released her vice-like grip from her little sister, the little red-hooded gothic lolita took in a deep breath, feeding her starving lungs with delicious oxygen as the three grimm pounded on the wall of ice outside.

"Is everyone alright?" asked the boy with black hair and a pink stripe. Seeing several heads nod in confirmation and a few select groans, the boy nodded his own head.

"I believe we're about as alright as anyone else could be in this situation, Ren." said Blake, looking at her partner with a sardonic grimace.

More thundering pounds echoed around them as the Petra Gigas and the Deathstalker continued to beat into the icy blockade while the screeches of the Nevermore echoed above their sanctuary in the ruins. Jaune looked around, seeing the collection of chess pieces and walked over, picking up a small golden horse.

"Are these the relics?" he asked aloud, grabbing the group's attention as they all joined him.

"Chess pieces?" asked Yang, taking the golden horse from her partner's grasp, examining it as she brushed her fingers against it's smooth surface.

Suddenly, the sound of the ice wall shattered pulled their attention away from their objective as a massive hole appeared in the wall, having been punctured by the Petra Gigas's strike as slowly but surely large clumps of ice began falling away, crashing on the ground and breaking further apart.

"Alright, I think we can all agree that this is beyond our capabilities." said Weiss, grabbing a golden castle from off of the pedestal.

"She's right." said Ruby, her silver eyes shining with seriousness as more ice fell to the ground. "There's no point in fighting these things."

"You heard the lady! Get a chess piece and let's get the heck out of here!" shouted Yang, her words already having an immediate effect on the others as they each grabbed their chosen relic and preceded to run towards the back exit when Ren turned to Nora.

"Nora, give us some covering smoke!" shouted Ren when Nora unleashed her weapon, firing off a canister towards the exit that then exploded with dark pink smoke, giving the group a cloud to conceal their movements, allowing them to race off without the grimm noticing them.

However as the pink smoke began to fade away and the grimm caught sight of their prey, the group pushed themselves to their limits, empowering their bodies with a surplus of Aura that fuels their bodies, allowing them to run at accelerated speeds away from the charging Grimm. But as the group came upon a bridge that led to the cliff, the gigantic Nevermore made a nosedive on their location, destroying the bridge with it's massive weight and unfortunately separating the group from the lovable knightly goofball, Jaune.

Struggling to her feet, Yang looked back to see her partner standing face to face with both the Deathstalker and the Petra Gigas while the Nevermore continued to fly overhead. Her lilac eyes widened at the sight as the monstrous grimm as they remained motionless before her partner.

"Jaune!" she shouted at her partner, her words causing him to tense up. "Get out of there! Run!" she pleaded only to witness as Jaune turned to gaze into her eyes with a carefree smile as a bright white light enveloped his body.

"It'll be okay, Yang. I've got this." said Jaune, turning back to face the grimm as the bright light grew brighter and brighter until eventually, the entire valley was surrounded in a blinding light.

The others covered their eyes in an attempt to block out the flash of light that came from Jaune's body. And with it came a tremendous pressure the likes they've never felt before. But it was what was happening to themselves that had they questioning everything in life. Their wounds, their exhaustion, and their Aura were all being rejuvenated by Jaune's overwhelming power. It felt like they were all just batteries that were being charged by Jaune's Aura. As the light faded away, revealing Jaune with a pure white halo surrounding his body, his flagpole in hand s he faced the gigantic grimm that seemed to cower before him, his hand tightening around the pole's shaft as he dropped into a fighting stance, he opened his mouth to speak. And though he stood a few feet from them with the thundering echoes of the grimm that turned to run from the glowing boy, his friends heard his words loud and clear.

"It's time you guys learned a valuable lesson!" he shouted, raising his flagpole in one hand and stepping his foot back, prepared to throw the rusted up weapon at the fleeing grimm. "DON'T MESS WITH AN ARC!" And with a mighty throw, the flagpole rocketed towards the fleeing grimm, accelerating until it effortlessly pierced their bodies and enveloped them in a massive flash of blinding light.

After a while the flash of light faded away and all that was left was utter destruction in the wake of Jaune's blinding attack. The group all watching with shocked and dumbfounded expressions as Jaune turned to look back at them with a goofy smile, scratching the back of his head.

"Heh, looks like I went a little overboard, again." he said, laughing as all of his friends fell backwards, completely overwhelmed by the sheer shock of witness something as unbelievable as that.

Elsewhere, standing atop Beacon Cliff with a smile on his face and a mug of piping hot black coffee in his hand while Glynda stood off to the side with the same look of shock his students had had previously, Ozpin turned to glance back down at his device, seeing the smiling face of Jaune. When suddenly a second screen appeared a direct message from Orville, himself.

"How is he?" the message read. Looking back to where the smoking destruction of the Emerald Forest was happening, Ozpin turned back to the screen to reply.

"I believe Jaune will make this year very interesting, Orville." typed Ozpin, tucking his device away as he began walking towards the academy, mentally preparing himself for the year that was to come. A storm was brewing in the world of Remnant and Jaune Arc was in the eye of it.
