"No." I shot daggers at him through my tears "I refuse to leave"
"Last time I checked Miss. Taniyama the decision is not yours to make"
"N-Naru -" He cut me off
"Clearly you don't follow instructions." he walked passed me to the monitors and looked into his file. Gene and Kat moved to give him space. Masako and Yasu sat at the kitchenette table, John in the arm chair near the door, Monk stood behind, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. Ayako sat on the edge of the sofa. Looking at her hands in her lap. Each one avoided my gaze
"Guys?" I whimpered out "Do you agree?"
Ayako balled her skirt in her hands "We could have lost you, Mai"
"I was okay! You have to take risks in this field to get the answers we need to finish a case!" I shouted. Naru slammed down his file on the desk
"I specifically told you, you were to help Yasu with research." he hissed
"I was!"
"How is frolicking around the campus research?" he questioned, leaning against the table behind him crossing his arms to his chest. Blue eyes narrowed
"Lizzy was giving me a tour! I was learning the history of this place. That is research" I defended myself
"And you didn't think about taking Yasu with you?" he raised an eyebrow. Still very angry. His jaw clenched.
I inhaled sharply at his question. Not once did that thought cross my mind when I left? I looked away from him. I wanted to prove to Naru that I wasn't stupid or helpless..that I could do things on my own "No. No, I didn't. I'm sorry"
"Sorry isn't going to cut it. You will be leaving first thing tomorrow morning. You are welcomed to stay in this room till then or when Miss. Elizabeth comes with your things you may find a room in the hotel."
"You're serious about this!?" I choked on my sobs
"I am very serious on this matter." he turned away. Singling that the conversation is over. Anger boiled within
"Why" I growled. Trying my hardest to control the energy in me to not break through the invisible barriers Kat helped me create days ago "Why is it that you treat me like some china doll!" I yelled at him. Taking his arm into my hand, I used all my strength to force him to look at me. For a few seconds, surprise flickered in his ocean blue eyes
"Let go of me" his tone cut through me. I could feel the warm sensation on my back growing and expanding through out my body. The air shifted around me, my eyes burned with a fury like a small flame was imbedded within my pupils. My air moved softly around my neck and face as the air gathered at my feet swirled. I could feel the tensing of Naru's muscle beneath my hand as I still kept hold at the crock of his arm. I heard the brief whisper from Kat to keep calm, but I ignored her. Naru didn't have the right to send me away like some disobedient child. He has done plenty of reckless things on cases and he's only received a smack on the hand and told no. Why am I so different?
"This is why," he said under a hushed breath, trying to keep it just between the two of us but the base was void of any sound. My eyes darted all around his face, landing on his eyes once more. Trying to decode what he had just said. But I was confused, he knew I was. Naru placed his right hand over my small one clutching to his arm, warm to the touch. He opened his mouth to say something but the door to the Red Room opened
"I have Mai's things like you requested" Lizzy stood in the doorway with her brother behind her. She too avoided my gaze when Naru and I looked to her. I knew she was sorry for getting Naru, but she did the right thing in the end. I walked away from my former boss to the siblings
"Thank you," I said to the both of them. Micheal handed me my suitcase that he held in his hand and gave a short nod, leaving to the hall to wait for his sister "And thank you, Lizzy, for alerting the team of my whereabouts" I gave her a kind smile, she looked surprised but noted my lack of sarcasm and smiled back.
"Well I have some homework to do. Have a wonderful night." Lizzy gave a final wave to the rest of the team and I and left the room, meeting up with her awaiting brother. I sighed, dropping the large shoulder bag Lizzy handed me
"I guess I'll call a cab" I pulled out my phone, the screen cracked at the top right hand corner. No doubt caused by the fall she had when Naru roughly tossed her in the room. I rolled my eyes at the sight of it
"You will not take a cab" Naru said. I stopped my googling of a non sketchy cab service
"Last time I checked I don't work for you any more" I huffed. Eying him up and down. Naru's eyes narrowed
"I already told you I requested a car for you tomorrow morning to take you to the airport"
"Yeah no" I picked my belongings up and made way for the door "I don't want to be around you any longer then I have too." I exited the room with Ayako and Monk pleading me to stay. I waved them off as well. Not wanting to listen to them. I was still mad that they didn't speak up in my defense. It took some time but I finally made it to the small cafe they had placed at the entrance of the hotel the campus converted. I was seated by one of the students working a night shift. Oddly enough I wasn't alone in the cafe. It was decently packed with hotel guests and students mingling. Thankful that the waiter sat me by the fireplace away from the crowded booths of people. I checked my phone, a little after eight n the evening. I ordered a late dinner of stuffed shells and a coke. While I waited for my meal I pulled out all my notes and findings of the school that I had done earlier on my tour with Lizzy. Knowing I was off the case I still wanted to know what was going on here.
"You defiantly belong with Noll" a chuckle came from across the table. I was startled but relaxed when I saw it was Gene and Kat sitting across from me. Thanking the stars I sat with my back to the crowd of people "Even when you got fired you still work" I picked up the crumbled straw paper I had from my glass of water and threw it at him, it, of course, went straight through, bouncing off the black chair.
"What are you both doing here?" I questioned quietly so no one else would hear
"Keeping you company of course," he said amused. I rolled my eyes, noting it was becoming a tick of mine "You know my brother means well"
I was flipping through some papers when the waiter came over with my meal. I said a quick thank you before answering my spirit guide "Yeah I know" I took a bite of the Italian dish and melted when the warm cheese oozed when I bit into it
"One down side of being dead is not being able to eat" Kat mumbled as she eyed my food like a little girl in a bakery. I laughed under my breath. Gene and Kat sat in silence as I finished my dinner, I ordered the chocolate cake Monk had bought me. Kat's eyes were as large as the plate, she basically fainted at the sight of it.
"So why are you working on the case? I thought you were going home" Gene asked, looking over some pages sprawled over the table
"Because I know for a fact that Naru is bluffing," I said, finishing the cake
"How do you know that?" Kat questioned. Seeming interested in how I knew. Gene tilted his head
"Oliver never bluffs. Have you played poker with him?" he said with a smile. I cracked a smile at the thought of him playing the card game
"Because he's smarter then he leads on" I laughed at Gene rolling his eyes "Come on, do you really think Naru of all people would let me get in a car and fly to Japan on my own….knowing the possibility I could be hunted down?"
"I never he thought of that" he said, Kat patted his arm
"That's why hes the smart twin" I let out a soft laugh at Kat's insult to Gene
"Exactly. Naru was already super proactive over me before I became Carpe. Now its like hes in over drive" I reached for my rose gold MacBook. I remember the day I got it, its been about a month now. I had asked Naru if I could get off a littler earlier that day. Surprising enough he had come with her, stating he had more knowledge of computers then she. My old laptop that my high school gifted me was outdated and had stopped working properly. So I saved up all the money I could, I had my eyes set for the pink Apple product. Naru tried to persuade me to get another and failed, we spent the rest of the evening together. Shopping in the outlet malls, he convinced me to let him buy me a little black dress and some fancy heels. Reasons I had no clue till he took me to his favorite restaurant. Which happened to have the reputation of one of the most expensive and hard to get in to restaurants in the area. On our walk back to the office he stopped us again at a local ice cream parlor a few blocks away, and for as long as I lived in the area and worked there, I have never come across it. But Naru claimed they had the best ice cream and he was right. Once a week or so, Naru and I would walk down and enjoy the cold dairy. It was a perfect day. "I am exactly surprised he let me alone for this long"
"Well you did piss him off pretty bad" Gene said, bored.
"I know. But I was just doing my job!" I exclaimed. A little too loud that I got a few looks from a few strangers in the cafe.
"No. You acted without thinking and put your life in jeopardy" a colder voice came behind her. I tensed, but butterflies erupted in my stomach at the sound of my name rolling off his lips. I spun in my chair and gazed up at Naru
"I thought I was Miss. Taniyama" I smirked at him. He rolled his eyes in annoyance
"Let's go" he picked up my luggage and left me with the papers to clean up. He didn't notice Gene or Kat...whom were now gone.
"Um excuse me!" I still sat in my chair, arms crossed "I thought I was no longer working for you"
"Mai I do not have time for this childish behavior" he turned and started to walk. I stuck my tongue out at him "I saw that" I huffed and gathers all my papers and laptop and followed after him. Of course he saw it, I knew he knew I would do that. I was happy to be leaving the cafe. All the iron drained my body, forever grateful that the iron chairs had coatings of paint on them to protect me from the metal beneath. Kat said it could burn her while nullifying her powers. I didn't want to find out the hard way. Once we left the cafe it was as if life was breathed back into me.
"Maaaaai!" Monk bombarded me as soon as I walked in the door "I missed you" he whined as he squeezed me against his hard torso
"I was only gone for an hour" I cried, trying to pull away desperately. A thunk came seconds later. Ayako was red in the face from annoyance at her boyfriend
"Let her go you moron!" Monk glared at his red head girl
"I know you did not do that on purpose" he rubbed his head. Ayako crossed her arms and puckered her lips
"So what if I did. You need to start treating Mai like a young lady. Not some two year old!"
"Mai is the closest thing I have to a daughter" he exclaimed. I blushed, I really never minded the consent hugging and worriers from my legal guardians. It was nice to have a parent like figures, especially a father. I knew that one day Monk will walk me down the aisle on her wedding day, and I know he will cry his eyes out. It's hard to believe that I've known the both of them...well mostly everyone close to two years now and so much as changed. The couple was still bickering but she rushed forward and hugged Monk around his waist, catching him off guard. Stopping the arguing.
"I love you" I whispered into his chest. I don't know what made me do it, maybe because he said I was basically his daughter? He wrapped his strong arms around me and hugged tighter.
"I love you too Mai" another set of arms wrapped around me, and the smell of lavender washed over; Ayako.
"We both love you sweetie" she kissed the top of my head. We stayed like that for a few more seconds before a low child-like cough came
"As lovely as this family reunion is I would like to do one final run through of the school before bed. Care to join?" Masako said standing behind us. Monk grunted as he opened the door for both ladies and John hurried to catch up. Leaving Yasu, Naru and me.
"So am I back on the team?" I asked Naru who was writing something in his classic black notebook
"Tea Mai" was all he said, but I let my smile grow knowing his answer was yes. I lingered for a moment taking in his image. His tall body draped in the chair, his legs bent and pulled close to the legs of the chair, his right leg bouncing. While he wrote elegantly with his right hand, ocean blue eyes darting over his words. His skin its usual cream color was glowing in the presence of the monitors feeds. Blues and greens mixed with purples danced over his face "Then work with Yasu on the school's research" he said breaking me out of my examination. I hurried to the small kitchenette and made his tea.
It was nearing eleven at night when the gang walked into the room, noticeably exhausted. Yasu and I were as well. Monk and Ayako walked over to our shared table in the kitchenette. Papers and blue prints scattered around. We had a white board behind us tapped with pictures I had taken, highlighted maps and case information.
"Looks like research suits you Mai" Monk said, eying the debris on the table. He lifted my notebook to read the passage I booked marked. It was about my dream I had earlier "Mai, what language is this?" he was flipping through the pages trying to find anything he could possible read
"Mostly Latin" I answered, finishing a few notes on the missing boys "Some in Hebrew"
"Do you know how hard it is working with someone who doesn't write her notes in Japanese or English" Yasu groaned as he cracked his back, I smacked his arm as he chuckled
"Mai, sweetie why?" Ayako asked as she looked at my notebook too
"I don't know. I have always done that. My mom did it as well, guess I just followed her lead"
"How many languages do you know?" John asked. I thought about it and started counting on my fingers
"Japanese, English, Latin, Hebrew, Lithuanian, French, Italian and my grandfather was teaching me Greek but he passed away" I finished counting. I just received fish eyes from everyone besides Naru. Even Masako looked stunned.
"Why so many?" she asked "And here I thought you were the stupidest of us all" I glared at her.
"As I said before, my grandfather wanted me to grow up being very versatile. He was in the American Marines so he was stationed all around the world for years and he learned all of these and passed them down to me. He told me my father knew them as well. But now that the Carpe secret is out, gets me wondering if it was for different reasons" I twisted my back trying to relieve the aching in the middle
"You guys came at the perfect time. We are all done!" I said all excitedly "Gather round the sofa" Yasu pulled the white board so it was in front of the base room door. Perfect spot so those sitting at the sofa could see, we had to move the arm chair so John could sit and see. Naru stayed in his chair at the monitors.
"What do you have there Mai" John asked,
"To answer your question John, this is what I was doing for the three an a half hours I was gone." I turned the board so they can see the map, blue prints. Pictures and notes that I took.
"So what are we looking at" Monk asked
"Good question, this is the map of the school. Each floor and each room" I pointed to the map. "the lines that are high lighted in pink are the secret passageways. The yellow high lighted lines are the main daily routes the student use. And this-" I pointed to the area circled in red " Is where I ran earlier today the door that leads here is in the Archives. Naru and I didn't get far because I had some weird thing happen to me. But as I was out touring the school, Lizzy showed me the South tower and when I looked out I saw this building. It's just a black square out there" I pointed to the picture I took " I asked Lizzy what it was but she said she didn't know since there is a gate that blocks off the forest pasted the stream." I then pointed to the gate
"And that's why you went into the woods," Monk said to no one
"Shorta. Lizzy showed me the gate, I did climb over it but I had the intentions to get back over since the sun was setting but..." I trailed off. Trying my hardest to remember the details that changed my mind
"But what?" Ayako spoke up. I looked back at the photo of the black building from the tower
"They were calling me" I spoke, "All of a sudden the forest was littered in hundreds of spirit orbs, and I could hear their whispers mix in with the sound of the breeze….it was haunting but I was memorized"
"And that's when you followed" Yasu finished my sentence. I nodded
"I know something is here…the answers are in that building" I pointed to the photo "And it might sound really crazy, but I believe that the passageway Naru and I were in this morning may lead to that building."
"We can always take the woods but Mai was lead there and the only reason we found Mai was cause Gene found us" Monk held is chin as he talked to the group
"And why should we believe that this hypothesis is right." Naru finally spoke up. I looked to him, clearly, he was still mad at me
"Because you're the one who told me to trust my instincts" He didn't say anything after that. The room was silent, taking the information in. Yasu cleared his throat to get our attention back to the board
"We were called here as a favor to solve the reason why eight boys have gone missing. In the beginning, it seemed very likely that they had runaway. The headmaster of the school said that they've done multiple searches of the surrounding mountains and woods to find the boys but each search came up with no leads. That building was never mentioned in our earlier meetings. So while Mai was out touring the school I got the basic information of the boys."
Yasu flipped the board over to show them the eight boys that went missing "These are the eight boys that were reported missing. Starting from the first who went missing 23 years ago is-
David Black- DOB: March 23, 1978. Age:17. MIA: October 28, 1995.
Ethan Dylan - DOB: September 14, 1982. Age: 15. MIA: February 2, 1997.
Matthew Hathway - DOB: September 22, 1987. Age:15. MIA: December 13, 2002.
Kevin Dyle - DOB: February 6, 1993. Age:13. MIA: November 28, 2006.
Jared Cohen- DOB: November 30,1991 Age: 18. MIA: September 14, 2009.
Frunz Steinway- He's a transfer student from Germany. DOB: April 20, 1993. Age:19. MIA: January 21, 2012.
Ivan Brun- He's a transfer student from France. DOB: July 1, 2001. Age: 14. MIA: March 15, 2015.
Nianzu Wu- He's a transfer student from China. DOB: January 31, 2002. Age:16 MIA: April 30, 2018.
Yasu finished the long list of information."Plus the first three boys that did go missing where wearing the old school uniform, which was black slacks, a black button up coat and a white dress shirt. The uniforms now for the boys are black slacks, black blazer, white dress shirt with the school symbol, navy blue tie also with the school symbol, and black dress shoes.
"So there isn't any real order to the disappearances" Masako pointed out
"Well there are similarities" I started "For starters they are all clearly boys, under the age of twenty. Which would but everyone besides Monk and the girls in jeopardy." Monk huffed and whispered that he could pass for a teenager under his breath
"At this point I went ahead and looked into the boys farther to see if they had anything connecting the" Yasu grabbed a few papers from the coffee table that he placed there hen they started "Each boy was active, they participated in school sports. So they each were physically healthy"
"And each boy was at the top of his class" I said with amusement "Yasu and I found going over their records that each boy shared the same four-point zero grade point average"
"So if it is a haunting, it's targeting physically active teenaged boys who are smart?" Ayako summarized
"Correct" Yasu and I said in unison.
"One last thing" I lifted my journal Monk and Ayako were looking out "I had a dream when I passed out"
"Why didn't you say anything" Naru voiced frigidly. Noting another mistake I made that day. I laughed nervously
"I forgot" I tossed him a sly smile and a shrug "Either way. In my dream I wasn't me. I don't know who I was but I was alone and strapped down to a what felt like a bed or maybe a wooden table? Naked and cold. I don't remember what the room looked liked, but I wasn't alone. There was two male voices, one of them was named Vinny and the other didn't have one. Vinny said Lord so I am assuming Vinny was his servant."
"Anything else?" Naru waved a hand seemly bored
"Y-yeah" I gulped "The second voice...he said to rid the body of my soul...then there was pain and the dream was over" but it wasn't, because my real nightmare started. The images burned into my memory of my carved face and blood red eyes. The sound of my own voice repeating monster over and over again.
"Wonder what that could possibly mean?" John questioned. Monk yawned and stood up, grabbing Ayako's hand to help her up as well
"I don't know man, but I say we sleep on it and regroup at breakfast"
"That sounds lovely" Masako stood as well "Now that you're back Mai, we are sharing a room.
"Oh okay" I wasn't really happy with the sleeping arrangements. Granted Masako and I want to strangle each other majority of the time but she understood why. Ayako and Monk, Yasu and John and Naru always stayed by himself. Now that she thought of it, the group was coupling up. If it wasn't for Naru, Ayako and Monk would have never met. Lin and Madoka were together before we met and now it seems Yasu and Masako have gotten a little closer over the last week
"Fine, Goodnight." Naru told everyone. They said their good nights and walked out. Monk took my things for me so I wouldn't have to carry it back to the hotel. Masako told me the room number and gave me the extra room key since I decided to stay behind for a little while
"Aren't you going to go to bed Naru?" I asked, he had his back turned to me
"Soon" was all he said
"I can do it. I'm not really tired anyway" I stepped closer to him
"No Mai. I don't feel comfortable leaving you alone"
I just laughed "Didn't you listen to the information Yasu and I read out? You are basically the perfect target. I'm more worried leaving you alone" I sat in the chair next to him. He gave me his signature smirk, the one that drove my insides crazy
"Please, let me do it. Go to bed. I promise I'll leave in an hour or two" It wasn't because I wasn't tired, I was exhausted but I am to afraid to close my eyes and there be a possibility that I would have the same dream again...the one about my so-called fate. I heard Naru let out a sigh as he stood and gathered some of his things.
"One hour Mai. Then bed" I smiled up at him and held up three fingers
"Scouts honor" he rolled his eyes and left the room. I called out to Gene and Kat who appeared seconds later. We chatted and Kat started to train me on my energy. Small basic things like always, the iron in the building made it difficult to produced my energy like normal but it was a nice training session to help strengthen myself when I am in these situations. No activity came through the monitors, just a couple students sneaking out of their dorms to do whatever they had planned. Quickly an hour passed then two. Knowing Naru would be livid if I stayed longer I picked up my purse and slipped my heels back on and left. Gene and Kat kept me company till I reached my shared hotel room, I scanned the key card and entered. Soft moans filled the dark room
"Oh my god!" I quickly adverted my eyes away from the pair in the bed. "S-sorry"
A light came on and I looked at the couple, Masako had the sheet covering her torso while Yasu sat bare-chested. Well this was a surprise in the least, I knew they had gotten closer but damn she didn't know how close
"Well, this is embarrassing" Yasu ruffled his hair. My face was matching Masako's. Red as a tomato
"You could have warned me" I shook my phone at them "A simple text would have done the trick"
"I thought since you didn't come to the room that you were either staying with Naru or in the base," Masako said looking away
"Masako, my stuff is in here" I walked in and grabbed my luggage "How about I leave and you two can get back to playing twister" Masako smiled up at me,
"Thanks" was all she said before I left "Can you not tell anyone?" I looked back to her. At that moment she wasn't the girl I didn't get along with, she was pleading with me to keep their secret
"Of course I wouldn't. Just next time warn someone" I laughed and closed the door. Debating if I should go down to the main desk and get a room if one was available. I opened my phone deciding against the idea and sent a simple message, hoping he was still awake

And not to my surprise, moments later while I was scrolling through an online shop, his name appeared at the top

Room 208
He stood above me, shirtless like the last time I came to his room. His chest was smooth and chiseled with muscle. Something I never expected to see from him. He wasn't overly muscular, he was lean with defined lines shaping out the muscle. Not a single hair was found on his smooth creamy skin, not even as my eyes trailed down to were a happy trail would normally be on men. But what drove me nearly insane was the defined 'V' shape muscle in his lower abdomen. I licked my lips, wanting to desperately trace my fingers there. His dark blue lounge pants hung low on his hips, showing he wasn't wearing anything underneath. I felt my heart thumping hard against my chest, heat rose to my cheeks and a throbbing sensation started between my legs
"I-I am s-sorry" I stumbled on my words, not being able to take my eyes off how his thin pants curved and draped over his bulge, basically giving me an idea on how gifted he was. My mouth went dry as I squeezed my thighs tighter "M-Masako is um busy and I didn't have any other place to sleep. I was wondering if –" Naru grabbed my suitcase and stepped aside, allowing me in
His room wasn't any different from the one Masako and I use to share, it was white and tan. Pretty basic but the only difference was instead of two beds thee was one queen bed in the middle with two side tables. One of the lamps on casting a warm glow. The television was on but muted, a commercial playing. Paperwork was sprawled on the bed "Why are you here again?" his voice sounded, I turned to him. He placed my suitcase by a door which I assumed was the bathroom
"Um Masako is currently occupied with something"
"And that something left you without a bed?" he came over to me. Close enough that I could smell the body wash coming off him
"Y-yes" I finally tore my gaze away from his chest and looked up to his face, I had to do a double take, Naru was wearing glasses with black frames. God it was like he was the most sexiest nerd in the world "I didn't know you wore glasses"
"Only when I don't have my contacts in" he crossed his arms. Another fact about him, and strangely enough I felt closer to him...like I came across a hidden secret
"I like them" I looked around the room once more, trying to not stare at the half-naked man in front of her "I can leave. I didn't know you only had one bed. I can always see if John is okay with sharing a room with me"
"No its fine. Its not like we haven't shared a bed before" He walked past me, clearing the bed of all the papers. I blushed, remembering it was just a few days ago that I slept in the same bed with him.
"You sure? Aren't we crossing some work related lines here?"
"I think we crossed plenty" he said, I was watching his back move while he cleaned off the bed. His muscles rippling under the movements, then I blurted out the words
"I don't think we crossed enough" my eyes widened when I realized what I had just said. He stiffened and slowly turned to me "S-sorry I don't -" he just looked at me, his blue eyes trailing over every inch of my body. Heart thumping, breathing hitched. I had to get out of his gaze, the longer he started at me the more hot I became
"I'm just going to take a quick shower" I backed up and rushed to the bathroom. I closed the door and leaned against it. Trying to catch my breath. Why? Its like I cant be alone with him. My body cried out for his touch, I wanted him to touch me...slowly, gently. I needed him in every way. I couldn't understand why though. Was it because he was standing there in all his glory, torturing me with just his one article of clothing. I moved to the edge of the tub and sat on the edge, waiting for the water to get warm. Naru was still clouding my thoughts when I stepped into the shower, the hot water pouring over me sending shock waves of pleasure through me. I dragged the tips of my fingers over my body, panting at the sensation, they moved over my breast, aroused with the thought of Naru's tongue licking and sucking on the buds. My mind was going blank and my body crazed. My hands moved lower, over my abdomen and till my right met with the waxed mound between my legs. Stimulated and throbbing. A low moan escaped my parted lips as I rubbed gently. Trying to imagine what he would feel like entering me. Steam filled the room quickly as the water grew hotter and hotter. Then the lights started to flicker. I needed him and I needed him right now
I washed my hair and body the fastest that I could, got out and dried my hair and body. I rapped the white towel around my small frame and opened the door. The lights were off, Naru laid casually on the bed up top the comforter. The TV. was the only source of light filling the room with a blue hue. He glanced my way then back at the show he was watching then back at me realizing I was only clad in a small white towel. I don't know where the hidden courage came from but as soon as his eyes fell upon my body I dropped the towel. He shifted up a little then swung one leg over the edge of the bed, but I began to make my way to him
"Mai-" I shushed him with my index finger. I pushed him back down on the bed and crawled slowly on top. His hands were hot on my skin
