Even Kylo turned to look at Hux. The general's face turned a shade of rose-red as he became conscious of all the pairs of eyes observing him.
"Well, don't just stand there like you're trapped in frozen carbonate! Get back to work!"
Hux became flustered and turned on his heel and walked out of the bridge.
An officer approached him, "Sir, I have some news. A rebel ship has been spotted." Hux whirled around to see a lone x-wing fighter flying toward his ship. "Put the shields up and fire!" "Yes, general!" The officer declared while he jumped down into the lower level to tell the others.
"FIRE!" Hux screeched.
Green flashes of light were emitted from the front of the ship. Hux and Kylo watched the miniscule x-wing move around every green bullet.
"KEEP FIRING!" Hux yelled.
The general and the knight stood side by side in anticipation of the destruction of the rebel fighter. But no such annihilation came about. Hux grew anxious and dug his fingernails into his palms. The rebel just kept getting closer and closer until it flew through their ship.
In those moments, Hux faintly remembered something heavy pushing him to the side and landing on top of him. Pieces of the x-wing flew in all directions in the bridge. He stared up at the ceiling while he struggled to breathe. He saw a small image of a galaxy in his mind and thought it was the most beautiful thing that he ever saw. The last time he was conscious, he felt was someone dragging him by the arms.
Beep… Beep…Beep. Hux woke up seeing bright lights and white walls. A droid soon hustled over to tend to him and to check his vitals.
"Those are quite some burns you've got, Armitage." Hux peered down at his arms which were red and blistering. "You've also got two broken ribs and a fracture in your tibia," the droid added in its usual monotone voice.
"Yeah okay, but who brought me here?" Hux couldn't recall a thing after he'd been dragged away from the wreckage.
"It was Kylo Ren, sir," the droid supplied. Hux felt a little burst of joy in his heart. Kylo had brought him here. His knight had brought him here. Maybe he did care. He thought and grinned despite having broken bones and being stuck in the infirmary.
"Where is he?" Hux inquired.
"He's over there, sir. He passed out after dragging you here." No. Kylo can't be dead. "Is he—I mean, what happened to the rebel scum who crashed into our ship?" "She died. It is believed to be a suicide mission. The rebel was Captain Mira, sir." Hux nodded and tried to recall names of the high-ranking rebels but he couldn't seem to recognize that particular rebel.
"Is there anything else you need, general?" "Yes, there is. Make sure Kylo Ren is tended to." "Certainly, general." The medical droid scurried off to Kylo's bed and checked all his levels and listened to his heartbeat. A small smile appeared on Hux's face and his eyelids felt heavy. They made the weary general fall fast asleep in the medical wing.
The next morning, Hux woke up with a headache. He turned and reached for his medicine lying on the table near his bed when he heard a groan coming from the other bed in the infirmary.
A dazed and confused Kylo Ren sat up and looked around until his eyes met Hux's. After what felt like an eternity of awkward silence and staring, Kylo smirked at Hux before going on to boast, "You're welcome for saving your life by the way. You know, it wasn't easy trying to push you out of the way. You practically weigh the same as the Death Star."
Why is he acting like we've always been good friends? Hux wondered. He attempted to hold back a smile, "Oh, well look who's bragging now. Just a little while ago, if I remember correctly, you were accusing me of boasting about my new job and you tried to threaten me because god forbid, a Skywalker would ever stop complaining about anything."
Hux regretted what he said immediately and felt his face become hot. You shouldn't have said that, Hux. He literally could kill you any minute.
"That's right, Hux. You shouldn't have said that because—"
"Wait, did you just read my thoughts?"
"What else was I supposed to do all day while I was unconscious" Kylo managed to use air quotes with his injured arms while he said the word unconscious and proceeded to grin more roguishly this time.
Hux realized with horror that Kylo had been in his mind the whole time both of them were in the infirmary.
Hux glared at him, "You bastard!" he yelled.
At first, Kylo continued to smirk, but his face gradually softened, and he looked away before looking at Hux again, "So, you actually like me?" Kylo asked quietly.
Now it was Hux's turn to pretend to be looking somewhere in the distance before responding. He took in a shallow breath and said, "Yes. I do like you, Kylo…And not just because Supreme Leader commands us to get along. I like you beyond that…I…uh, kind of have a crush on you, I guess."
Hux let go of the breath he was holding and stared at the ceiling to try to brace for the impact of what he thought Kylo would say next.
But Kylo didn't say anything and Hux decided to look back at him again and saw that he was smiling a little.
