Chapter 4
A few weeks later, Hux was released from the infirmary.
(A/N: I'm sorry I know I'm skipping a lot of details here, but I felt that explaining EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. in the infirmary would be boring so I skipped some time.)
They had spent a lot of time getting to know each other better during that time, surprisingly. For example, Hux learned that Kylo loves to read and Kylo learned that Hux enjoys looking at the stars from the big windows on the ship. They grew close in their recovery periods but soon their friendship would have to be put on hold.
Snoke wanted to start training Kylo again and he wanted Hux to command a different part of the ship. Kylo was always training so Hux never got the opportunity to talk to him much, but the few times that Hux did see Kylo in the corridors, he looked tired and had more and more cuts and bruises on his face.
Hux wanted to ask him what was going on. He was sure that Snoke had done this to him. A few days went by and eventually he got the nerve to go talk to Kylo in his room.
Should I really be doing this? Hux asked himself while he walked to Kylo's room.
He arrived at the door. Here goes nothing. He thought and knocked on the door.
A few sounds echoed from behind the door and a moment later, Kylo emerged. He eyed Hux, "what do you want?" he whispered hoarsely.
He looked terrible. Bloodshot eyes, scrapes alongside his face, and his broken voice gave Hux all the pieces of the puzzle that he needed.
Hux cleared his throat before replying, "I—uh wanted to see how you were doing,"
"Well, you see me now and I'm fine, so you can leave,"
Hux grabbed Kylo's arm before he went back inside.
"You're not fine, Ren. I know you aren't."
And their eyes met, green to brown. Kylo glanced down Hux's grasp on his arm and looked back up and sighed.
"Fine, but you aren't staying long. I only get three hours of sleep and I'm trying to spend it wisely."
Kylo pulled Hux into his room and the door closed behind them. Hux sat on Kylo's bed while Kylo sat in his desk chair.
The pair of them sat in silence before Hux said, "I—I mean, we're still, friends, right?"
"I guess so." Kylo muttered while staring at the floor.
Hux ran his fingers through his hair and tried to think of something else to say.
"Listen Kylo, I know that Snoke is hurting you and I don't think that's okay. Personally, I hate my new job on the other side of the ship. Everybody treats me like shit and I know that it's nothing compared to what's happening to you. The First Order just has lost its spark to me."
Hux hesitated for the next part, "So, I was thinking about running away from the First Order."
Kylo looked up incredulously.
"And I was wondering if you would come with me?"
"I can't," he whispered.
Hux started to get frustrated, "why not? I could get us out of here! We could go somewhere and—."
"You don't get it, Armitage!" Kylo yelled and stood up and paced around the room.
"What don't I get? Are you just afraid that Snoke is going to punish you? Well look at what he did to you! You just keep insisting that you can learn something from him and that he'll teach you everything. But both you and I already know that he can't—"
"I WILL FAIL MY GRANDFATHER IF I DON'T BECOME POWERFUL!"
Kylo sat back down in his chair.
It's funny how silence can make you feel so tortured. Hux didn't like the space that silence filled between Kylo and him. Just as much as he didn't like Kylo's decision to stay.
"Fine," Hux breathed. "You can stay here. I'm leaving tomorrow, with or without you."
Kylo softened, "I'll cover for you and make up an excuse."
"Thanks,"
Hux nodded and stood up to leave but Kylo stopped him, "Wait! Hux, I—I just want you to know how much I really care about you. Like, thanks for making sure that I was okay and all and—"
Kylo was silenced by Hux's hands moving to cup his face. "I know. I love you too."
And they kissed passionately, not wanting to let each other go. Both felt like everything was just right and they memorized this moment in time and kept it locked inside their minds.
This is the end.
Hux thought to himself while he let go of Kylo and slowly slipped out of the room. He didn't dare to look back. Kylo's heartbroken expression alone would've been enough to break his own heart.
