AN: Hello and welcome back. I'm excited to announce that we´re entering in a new arc, and I'm very eager to see how you guys will react. I was thoroughly pleased with how you all responded to the Nightflight arc, and I hope you'll enjoy this arc as well. I also want to share with you all a little secret: we''ll be seeing more of Berk in this arc!
Review response:
Kilo8: I'm very happy that you liked it. We are moving to a new arc, but there are questions raised on the last chapter that will return on this arc as well
KE12: I'm going to read your lastest chapter today, as I too have faced this same issue. But from what I can tell they have already fixed this
Agentweapon Proelium-Tempus: Thank you. We'll see more development on this new arc, although with a different spotlight now. I hope you will enjoy it
OechsnerC: Patience, it will happen, and soon might I add
mc arno: I believe it was an issue from FF, in that my readers were not notified that chapter 30 went up. I hope you'll enjoy this chapter. Your reviews are always very much welcome
thearizona: your questions will be answered on the next arc of HTLIG, so hold onto them. In this one we won't see her much, but we definitely will see more of what she thinks about this mystery. And I can't answer that, or I'll be spoiling a big chunk of HTLIG.
Noctus Fury: That is an excellent idea actually. I may end up using it :P Idun is still on the fence about it, as she is not ready to believe that her reclusive daughter is seeing someone else, but won't even see Gerda.
unsuresinger: I have thought up pretty far, so I can assure you it is mostly an AU (well it technically is an AU, since on the canon Hiccup never appeared, but I understand your point). I can't say much more lest I risk spoiling the story
Boo-bear lover101: Between uni and my scientific project I have very little time to write, and my weekends are mostly spent training HEMA and HMB with two fencing groups, which is why I don't update very often. I do miss back when I entered the fandom and used to update my stories weekly. There is also the fact that my memory has been getting worse and worse lately, so I end up completely forgetting to update, and miss my one month limit to update.
Without further ado:
Previously
Elsa starts to open up with Hiccup, although with tiny steps. Nightflight has completely healed from her injury, though not without gaining a scar. Meanwhile Hiccup gifts Elsa the map that he had started drawing before the whole Nightflight issue started, and Elsa is delighted by it. Idun, on the other hand, sees the map and starts to think that her daughter may be seeing someone else, considering the discussions they previously had.
Three months has passed since Elsa began learning the piano, and two since Nightflight came to her life. She remembered most of what she knew about playing piano, and could play simple pieces without much trouble. Sometimes, though, Elsa would just sit and hear her mother play, as per request of the former.
In one of those nights that she played the piano with her mother, however, her relationship with Hiccup was about to change. She arrived at the tower after playing the piano with her mother; having decided earlier that she would learn the piece that had been her favorite to hear years before the isolation began, and was currently having great progress, only to find Hiccup pacing around with a serious face.
For a second she froze, thinking something had gone wrong, or that she said something wrong the last time. Her uneasiness, however, was short lived as he looked at her, smiled, and waving in greeting. Elsa returned it with an awkward smile, along with a wave.
She strode to her usual spot, and was about to sit, when Hiccup addressed her. "Don't sit please. I need to talk to you," he said.
Elsa eyed him, feeling the uneasiness back. It must be quite serious if he doesn't want me to sit, she thought. For a moment she felt panic rise inside her, as the idea that maybe he was leaving came in. She force shut out the idea, reasoning that he would warn her previously before doing so.
And even if he did not warn her beforehand, he always returned. He had returned during the Nightflight crisis after all.
"So…" he began, shifting his feet out of nervousness. "We've been meeting for roughly three months since my crash…" he stated.
Elsa nodded slowly, not quite sure of where he was going. An idea popped up in her head that he might like her, but she quickly dismissed it, thinking it was too farfetched. We don't even have physical contact, not even a handshake, often enough for that to happen, she reasoned with herself. Sure, they went through a lot when he introduced her to Nightflight, but to her it still was not enough to make him like her.
Or so she hoped.
"And I think you're more comfortable with me- with us- around, enough to show you . . . something," he said, as he resumed his pace, probably thinking how to put his next words.
That moment the idea that she just dismissed as too farfetched didn't seem so much now. Fear began to crawl inside her as she felt at a loss of how to act if he liked her. She didn't want to hurt his feelings, enough to lose him, but she also didn't like him other than as a brother.
"Elsa? Are you okay?" he called out to her a couple of times. Elsa snapped out of her thoughts, nodding. He didn't press on, sensing that she was trying to think where he was going with this speech. So he decided to quick the pace.
"I want to tell you something, but I need to know if you trust me enough to do so. I need to know if you'll panic or anything of the sorts," he said, using a soft tone, as if to ease whatever might worry her. She eyed him, as a battle waged inside her. A part of her was nearing total panic at what could he show her that might panic her, even with him at her , while another trusted him enough that he would never put her in a dire situation.
"Elsa . . . ?" he asked uncertainly, noticing how she visibly looked conflicted. It painted him that she looked this way.
"NO!"
Hiccup froze in shock, not expecting her outburst. It felt as if he was frozen in place and someone speared him. Even though he could not understand why Elsa was reacting this way, the sheer amount of denial that her outburst carried reminded him of his father's denial, and that was enough to greatly sadden him.
His gaze fell, and he took a step away from her. "Did I . . . do something? Did I upset you?" A thought crossed his head, one that he would have brushed off, had he not felt so hurt. "Do I . . . disgust you?"
Elsa snapped back to reality the moment she heard his voice, sounding so small and scared. It painfully reminded her of every time she had an outburst and her parents sounded so helpless and afraid. "No, please . . . I'm sorry." She shakily inhaled while rubbing her hands together. She could feel the air much colder than it had been a few moments before. "I never meant to make you feel this way."
He weakly chuckled. "I think I should be the one that should be apologizing. I mean . . ." he trailed off, while rubbing the back of his neck. "I did hide another dragon from you for three whole months. I should have told you that there was another one, besides Toothless and Windwalker." He looked up, right at her eyes. "Can you forgive me?"
It took all of her willpower to not sigh in relief. Good, he is not in love with me. I don't know what I'd have done if he had been- Her trail of thoughts completely halted as the meaning of his words fully settled inside her mind. There is ANOTHER DRAGON?!
She paled, and searched his eyes for any signs that maybe he was joking, or pulling a bad timed prank on her. But when she found only sincerity and regret she couldn't stop herself from gulping, nor could stop her voice from sounding so shaken. "Another one?"
He slowly nodded, as if afraid of how she would react. He understood her previous reaction was not related to Windwalker, although it intrigued him. If she didn't freak out because I was hiding another dragon, than what did she think that I was going to say? It was a thought he wanted to ask her, but given the direness of the current situation, he felt that it was not appropriate, for the time being at least.
"Yes," he slowly began. "I didn't tell you before because he was my last resort, in case things went irreparably wrong. I . . . I'm telling you about him now because I want to fully trust you, and I can't do that if I'm keeping a secret this big from you. I mean . . ." He sighed, and ran his hand through his face. "You rarely let me close to you, and you rarely speak about yourself. I thought you acted this way because deep down you didn't fully trust me."
He weakly chuckled. "It's only fair I guess. I never fully trusted you either, until now that is."
"What changed your mind?" Despite her fear, and her concerns, her curiosity got the best of her. There must be a reason he is trusting me now, all of a sudden, she reasoned.
He inhaled deeply. It was almost melancholic how the moonlight cast a gentle shadow on his face. Elsa found it fitting, considering the situation they currently were in. "You interacting with Nightflight. You were afraid at first, and that's understandable. She was a wild dragon, and was injured, not the best combination. I faced the same with Toothless and the outcome was much more . . . terrifying." He cleared his throat before continuing, "I guess I'm getting sidetracked."
She unconsciously nodded. "But you grew close to her, enough to bond with her. And, in that moment, you also let me get close to you. So I thought that if I told you about him, that at least you'd tell me why you tend to keep your distance from me. I thought that if I showed you that I have no more secrets, that I'd fully earn your trust." He looked her deep in the eyes. "Can I ask that? Can I ask you to trust me? After telling you all my history, my fears, and now showing you all my friends."
Elsa didn't know what to think. He was taking a leap of faith with her, and now he was waiting to see if he leapt for nothing, or if his boldness would actually yield something. On one hand, she wanted nothing more than to confine him all her fears, her anguishes, all about her powers. On the other hand she was still afraid of how he would react, even if he has proven time and time again that he was not leaving.
That he was not breaking his promise to her.
"Would . . . you mind showing him first? Before I give you my answer."
It was not the answer he was expecting to hear, but it was enough for him, since it seemed that she was not going to run away. Hiccup clapped his hands, holding them together in the air. "Okay, so…" he trailed off.
Toothless nudged him, and that seemed to bring Hiccup out of his trance. "Right, so… we'll be right back." He hopped on Toothless. He turned to look at her, "Please, don't leave." And with that they flew through the window.
Elsa just stood there, trying to understand what just happened. When they began to discuss the books she brought, she found out that Hiccup had an odd way of thinking. Most of the times it meant that she would have an unusual discussion with him, although quite pleasant, and even fun sometimes, but a couple of times she would just be at a loss about certain things he just blurted out when he was too enthusiastic about a certain subject.
She shook her head, returning to the present. This isn't the time to think about discussing Poetry or Philosophy. You just thought he was going to announce his love for you, and ended up finding out that there is a third dragon in Arendelle. And now you have to tell him whether you trust him or not. Sometimes she hated the rational part of her mind, but she couldn't deny how right it was on this moment.
Moments later Hiccup came back, too soon for her to actually think about trusting him. What was odd, that Elsa noticed, was that the dragon was not with him. He approached her, which made her unconsciously shrink in fear slightly.
He stopped, before stepping backwards. "Are you sure you want to do this? Are . . . you afraid of me?" he asked with a hurt tone, being sure to not move closer to her. Elsa herself felt a little hurt looking at him, mainly because she did this. "Should I just leave then . . . ?" he asked in a barely audible whisper.
"NO!" she shouted. Both were startled at the sudden outburst, him because of the sudden change in volume, and Elsa because the last time she shouted was when her parents were approaching her after her power outburst, not counting her last mistake.
She hugged herself, an unconscious move whenever she felt sad. "I'm… I'm sorry for shouting," she apologized. "I… I just don't like being close to people. Please don't come any closer. It has nothing to do with you, I promise," she reassured him, though her voice was slightly trembling. Her emotions were a wreak, and even though she was desperately trying to gain control, it was as if her body was acting purely out of fear.
Hiccup didn't say anything. Of all the things he had imagined that she would say when he approached her after months since he helped her bond with Nightflight, this was not between them. He silently conceded to her request, since the girl seemed to be on edge, and that would just make the incoming situation a whole lot harder.
"Okay, I won't approach you. But I need you to stay calm okay?" he asked her in a gentle tone. The gentleness in it seemed to ease a bit Elsa's edge. Her shoulders relaxed slightly, and she wasn't hugging herself fiercely as she was.
"Okay… I trust you won't endanger me or leave…" she said in defeat. To her credit, it lighted her a little put out the fears she had ever since he begun to act weird this day.
Hiccup sighed, feeling a bit shamed that he gave her the impression that he was about to do one of these things. He gave her the best reassuring smile he could muster. "I won't, I'd never," he said.
When Elsa felt confident enough, she complied. "Well, you can show me what you wanted to show…" and with that, he went to the window and made a motion with his hand. Then, slowly, he backed up to the center of the tower.
Before Elsa could think of anything, wing flaps were heard. Elsa's heartbeat quickened as there was only one possible explanation to that noise. Her body froze on spot, and she felt like she couldn't do anything.
