Chapter 3: About The Girl
After a long moment of silence Kodi looked at his uncle who seemed quite miserable. "Uncle Kaltag, are you sure your okay"? he asked. Kaltag looked at Kodi and gave him a weak and weary smile. "Yeah kiddo, I'm fine." he replied. "Alright, I guess I'll just tell dad that he's worried about nothing then." laughed Kodi. "Wait, Kodi before you go can I ask you something"? Stammered Kaltag. "Sure, what is it"? replied Kodi. "How's Jenna"? Kaltag asked nervously. "Mom? Mom's fine. Why do you ask"? asked Kodi as he gave him a confused look. "No reason, just curious." sighed Kaltag. "Okay… anyway I'm going to head out. If you need anything feel free to come talk to me." said Kodi. "Thanks kid." said Kaltag. As Kodi left Kaltag couldn't help but think about what happened so long ago.
(Flashback)
Kaltag and Balto both stayed on top of a rooftop nearby from Jenna's house. "Still got your mind on the girl huh?" Kaltag asked. Balto smiled as he looked at his best friend. "Yes, why do you ask?" Balto asked Kaltag Jumped onto Balto and started biting his ear playfully. "I don't know, I think I might like her too," Kaltag said still on top of Balto. Balto playfully pushes Kaltag back. "You saying she might not like me or something?" Balto asked now pushing Kaltag on his back. "Of Course not." said Kaltag. "Listen man, let's not allow some girl to get in between us." said Balto. "Of course." laughed Kaltag
(Present day)
"I was a damn fool." Kaltag thought to himself as he walked out of the old trawler. Kaltag's ears drooped as he walked outside. He looked around and smiled as the warm rays of the sun touched the snow. "Kaltag, is that you"? said a voice that made Kaltag's heart stop and the his fur to stand up. He turned around to see a red husky with an orange bandanna around her neck standing there. "Jenna." gasped Kaltag as the husky approached him. "You don't look so good." she joked. Kaltag stood in silence and stared at her. "Cat got your tongue"? she laughed as she nudged her old friend. "Um… no… no I'm good." he stuttered. "Balto's been worried sick about you." said Jenna. Kaltag just stood there as memories stated to flood his mind. "Kaltag"? asked Jenna. "Kaltag are you okay"?
(Flashback)
Kaltag and Jenna both walked along the road with sun about to go down for the night. "So… do you like sled dog racing?" Kaltag asked. Jenna looked at him and smile. "I like watching, not much into racing in it." Jenna answered. Kaltag chuckled at that. "Someday I'll be on the team," Kaltag said proudly. Jenna chuckled. "I bet you will be," Jenna said as they both came to a stop in front of Jenna's house. "Thanks for walking me home Kaltag," Jenna said with a lick on the side of his muzzle. Kaltag blushed just a little. "Yeah, um… no problem," Kaltag said as he watched Jenna go up into her house.
(Present Day)
"Kaltag are you alright"? asked Jenna. "Yeah, I'm just fine." he laughed nervously. "You never were a very good liar." said Jenna. "Yeah, that's something we can agree on." said Kaltag. "Hey Jenna." said a familiar voice that caused Kaltag to tense up. "Balto, I was just talking to Kaltag." said Jenna. Balto looked at him and smiled. "Hey Kaltag, just the dog I wanted to talk to." said Balto. "Talk to"? Kaltag asked nervously. "Yeah, you've been worrying everyone lately." said Balto. "How so"? asked Kaltag. "You've just seemed really out of it." said Balto. "I'm okay I promise." said Balto. "Kaltag your not fine." said Jenna. "I… I've just been doing a lot of thinking." said Kaltag. "About what"? asked Balto.
(Flashback)
"Alright Kaltag… just tell her how you feel," Kaltag said as he walked back and forth thinking of the words to tell Jenna about how he feels. "Jenna, I like you very much," Kaltag said to himself. Kaltag shook his head. "No that's dumb," Kaltag said to himself. "Alright I think I got it!" Kaltag said as he walked out of the alley. Just as Kaltag was about to walk out of the alley to meet Jenna. He saw Balto and Jenna talking to each other. "What are you doing Balto?" Kaltag whispered to himself. Balto then kisses Jenna before letting her go into her house. Kaltag growled a low growl before running away.
(Present day)
"Nothing." said Kaltag as a lonely tear ran down his face. "Kaltag you can talk to me." said Jenna who took a step towards him. "No, I'm fine." said Kaltag as he slowly retreated away from her. He quickly turned his attention to Balto as his heart began to ache. "I want you to know that I'm happy for you Balto. I'm happy that your life turned out the way you wanted it to." he said before turning around and making his way home. "Kaltag wait"! cried Balto who started to chase after him but stopped dead in his tracks when Jenna stepped in front of him. "Balto perhaps it's best just to let him go." said Jenna. "He's my friend." said Balto. "Then let him be." said Jenna. Balto looked over Jenna's shoulder and caught one last glimpse of Kaltag as he walked away.
