Chapter 4: Lucy

Kaltag wasted no time distancing himself from Balto and Jenna. Before he knew it he was once again alone. Just him and the thoughts that keep plaguing him every time he stops to think. He sat down and took a deep breath as he recollected his thoughts. "Now you've really gone and done it Kaltag," he muttered to himself. His ears flopped down as he let out a soft whimper. The moment of self-pity, however, was quickly brought to an end as a soft voice said, "Do I know you"? Kaltag's ears perked up as he turned around to see a dog standing there.

A female husky with grey fur and brown eyes looked at Kaltag. Her warm smile brought Kaltag some hope in his heart. "Lucy?" Kaltag said in a low tone.

(Flashback)

Kaltag looked around as people cheered for them. He took a moment to catch his breath before letting the other members of the team know they did good. "You didn't do too bad yourself." said a skinny husky. "Thanks, Star," said Kaltag as he noticed something that caught his attention. It was Lucy. Kaltag had only seen her once or twice but never could find the right moment to talk to her. He stumbled towards her causing her to give him a puzzled look. "My father use to tell me that sled racing was hard work but I don't think that's what he meant," said Lucy. "Idiot." Kaltag thought to himself as he tried to think of something to say. "Hi… I… I'm Kaltag." he stuttered. "Pleasure to meet you Kaltag, I'm Lucy." she giggled. "Lucy, that's a pretty name," said Kaltag. "Boo, you can do better than that Kaltag." shouted a rather large husky. "Shut it Nikki." groaned Kaltag. "I really must be going, perhaps we can hang out sometime," said Lucy. "That sounds like a great idea, how about the old shipyard before sunset"? asked Kaltag. "Sounds great," she replied. "Lucy come on girl"! shouted Lucy's owner. "See you later Kaltag, it was a pleasure meeting you," said Lucy. Before Kaltag could say anything Lucy disappeared into the crowd leaving him standing there with a dumbstruck look on his face.

(Present Day)

"How have you been lately?" Lucy asked. Kodi swallowed hard before answering. "I'm doing okay," Kaltag replied. Lucy nodded in response. "When did you get back into town?" Kaltag asked. Lucy smiled before answering. "A few days ago, my family and I moved back from New York," Lucy said with a smile. "Oh," Kaltag said with a small smile. "Have you been racing lately?" Lucy asked. Kaltag shook his head. "Not as much as I used to," Kaltag said losing his smile. "That's too bad, you were great at it," Lucy said as she sat down. "I heard Balto saved a pilot not to long ago," Lucy said with a smile. Kaltag lowered his ears and felt his heart sink. "I should get going Lucy," Kaltag said as he left without another word.

(Flashback)

Kaltag opened his eyes to see Lucy's face buried in his chest. He looked up to see that the sun was coming up and smiled. "You're going to miss it, Lucy"? he yawned. "Miss what"? she yawned before opening her eyes. "Isn't it beautiful"? he asked. "Your right Kaltag"? she gasped as she watched the sunrise. She turned her attention back to Kaltag and nuzzled him. "Sleep well"? she asked. Kaltag smiled and nodded. "I guess you could say that." he laughed. She rubbed her tail under Kaltag's chin before nuzzling him one last time. "I best be going, my owner is going to kill me," she said. "This was fun we should do it again sometime," said Kaltag. "Agreed," she said before turning around and walking away. "I love you," said Kaltag. "I love you too sled dog." she giggled before running off.

(Present Day)

Kaltag rushed into his house and laid down on his dog bed. Now stressed from all the things that are happening he growled at himself. Lucy was the best thing that could've happened to Kaltag until she moved away. Kaltag sighed thinking of the time he wanted her to be his mate. Kaltag's owner walked into the room and patted him on the head before going into the other room. Kaltag feels his eyelids getting heavy now drifting off to sleep.

(Nightmare)

Kaltag walked along an empty street where there was nothing but silence. "Hello"!? yelled Kaltag. There was no answer, only silence. "Is there anyone out there"? he whimpered. "Hello Kaltag." said a voice that made the fur on the back of Kaltags neck stand up. He spun around to see his father Kal standing there. "Dad… what are you doing here"? asked Kaltag. "I'm not here, in fact the harsh reality is your all alone." said Kal. "That's not true, I have mom… and Lucy…" whimpered Kaltag. Kal laughed and snarled. "What happens when your mother passes? Huh Kaltag? What then"? asked Kal. "I… I don't know." whimpered Kaltag. "Let's not forget Lucy, she left you before I wouldn't be too surprised if she did it again." laughed Kal. "Shut up… Shut the hell up"! yelled Kaltag. "Your no son of mine." he laughed before vanishing. "I… I really am all alone." he said as a tear rolled down his face. "I have nothing." he said before collapsing to the ground. "You are nothing"
