Chapter 11: My First Date
The sky was getting dark and had streaks of orange, red, and purple and I could feel my nerves on edge as Happy drove us through the city. And I suppose that I must have been breathing too heavily because Happy gave me a glance from the rear view mirror.
"You're going to be fine kiddo, just shake it off." Happy said. I swallowed hard and nodded.
"Yeah, okay." I didn't sound confident in the least, Happy chuckled.
"I remember my first date. Suzy Swanson, red head. Yeah I was just as nervous as you are." He said. I realized that he was trying to distract me from me being nervous with conversation, so I kept it going.
"How did it go?" I asked him. I saw him frown and twist his face in the mirror.
"I accidentally broke her nose with my head trying to kiss her." He said with regret. Was he really trying to make me feel better? That just made me feel worse, I started to break out into a cold sweat.
"I think we should just enjoy the ride in silence Happy." I said.
"Okay." He accepted.
When we got near the cinema the sky was bright red orange and made streaks of pink and purple and it was 6:36 p.m. The air was slightly warmer today but my fingers felt cold and I felt jittery. Happy drove me to the front of the cinema.
"Well here I go." I said getting out of the car.
"Jess wait." Happy said. I looked back him. "I'm sure everything's gonna go great. And you look really nice." He said. I smiled.
"Thank you Happy, that makes feel a little better." I said.
"You're welcome have a good time. And call me when you need me." He said.
"Okay later Happy." I said before I shut the door.
Have you ever felt like your rib cage was too small for your heart? That's how I felt as I walked towards one of several double wide doors of the theaters front. Once I walked in the cool cinema air surrounded my face, the temperature only helped me to realize that my hands were getting calmly, hopefully it can dry them as well. I checked my phone for the time and it read 6:45. Its only fifteen minutes until seven o'clock. I decided to just go over near the video games and sit down on the bench. Maybe i'll even give myself a pep talk, yeah that sounds good. After I sat on the bench I looked around and saw kids playing each other on video games, they looked so carefree which they were. I remember when I used to be like that... Come on Jess it's no time to be nostalgic I told myself. Oh yeah I was supposed to give myself a pep talk anyway!
"Everything's going to be fine. Nothing bad could possibly happen, there's no way i'm tall enough to even break his nose, if anything he could break my nose. This could be my first of many dates and not just with him. I'm doing good..." Okay that was one of the most crappy pep talks that I have ever given myself. I was pulled out of my train of thought when I looked up and saw Steve standing on the other side of the theater where the other video games were. Steve appeared to have been looking at me before I saw him, he smiled at me and I smiled back before I stood up.
He walked over to me casually but his stride was naturally fast, he was right in front of me in seconds.
"Hello Jessica." He said.
"Hi Steve, you're early." I said.
"Yeah, it's one of my good habits." He joked.
"That's a good habit to have." I said ironically serious and then we both laughed.
"Is there anything you would want to watch in particular?" He asked looking down at me.
"Yes, I really want to see Skyfall. What about you?" I asked.
"I have just been trying to catch up with movies in general." He said.
"Have you watched any of the James Bond movies yet?" I asked.
"I think i've seen the first two." He said.
"Well... did you like them?" I asked.
"Yeah I really did. And right now i'm guessing Skyfall is another movie in the franchise."
"Yes it is. And because the franchise has been around for so long there has been more than one James Bond. I think there has been...eight? Yeah think eight. So yeah, this is a different actor than you saw." I said.
"Have you seen all of the James Bond movies?" Steve asked.
"No I have seen only about five neither of those are the first one. So in a way you are ahead of me." I said.
"Well I would like to see this one too, not only because i've nothing but good things. But because you look really excited right now." He said almost laughing.
"I am, I am so excited as soon as I seen the trailer for this I knew I wanted to see this one." I said.
"Alright lets go." He said with a smile. I took his arm and we went to go pay for the tickets and of course he insisted to pay for mine. I didn't fight it because not only did I respect and love a gentleman but because I could've hurt his feelings. He may may be Captain America but he still is a man, just a very muscular, tall blue eyed dimpled man that I should be careful around or I might do something bad when the cinema lights go out. Just kidding, just kidding i'm not that bold.
After we got our popcorn we found our seats in the center of the room we sat down. When the lights went off I looked over at Steve and saw how the light from the screen reflected off of his face. It made his eyes shine and defined every curve of it including his lips, they seemed to be even more inviting in this light. I forced myself to shake out of my musings and look at the screen which showed Daniel Craig in a chase scene. When the movie was halfway over I laid my head on Steve's shoulder and he wrapped his arm around me and I couldn't help but smile.
After the movie over we walked outside the theater and sat down on near by benches. the sky was completely dark now.
"Is there anything else you want to do before tonight ends?" He asked me.
"We haven't seen each other in a while I would like to talk with you a little more." I said.
"There's a coffee shop down the street would you like to go?" He asked me.
"Yes, definitely." I said and then we starting walking down the sidewalk. There were a lot of stores still open so we had more lights shining on us then the street lights.
"That was so great." I said and Steve looked at me to continue. "The movie I mean."
"Oh yeah it was...You really enjoy the movies." Steve stated. I smiled at him and laughed.
"Yes I do very much." I said.
"I can tell you were almost like a little kid a little kid through the whole movie." He said with a smile.
"It was a James Bond movie! It was supposed to make an impression. And i'm not the only one who felt that way..." I said hinting at him with my eyebrow.
"What?" He said.
"Oh nothing, it's just you may not be aware of the face you make while watching a movie but I am now." I said and he laughed.
"What face do I make?" Steve asked and we both stopped walking.
"You make this..." I started to say as I squinted my eyebrows together and ducked my head a little. "very calculating face. Like making a strategy or figuring something out." I said and Steve laughed louder.
"I do not make that face." He said.
"What face do you think you make?" I asked and he folded his arms and he facial expression said nonchalant, he looked like a model. I covered my smile and laughed though my hand before shaking my head. "Nice face but you most certainly did not look like that." I said and I spin around on my heel to start walking in our original direction but right before I took a step forward Steve grabbed me around my waist and pulled me to him. Before I could wonder why he did that I saw a person on a bicycle going really fast and rode right through where I was stand a second ago. He didn't even try to avoid me.
I looked up Steve and he was staring and the direction of the rider. "Hey..." I said and he looked down at me, I could see directly into his blue eyes, they had some green in them.
"You okay?" He asked.
"Yeah...Thank you for saving me...again." I said.
"No problem." He said. We were so close I could feel his heart beating on my back, being this close to him was starting to make me nervous again. I don't think it would be wise to start hyperventilating in this moment.
"Are you going to let me go or do you want to stay like this a while longer." I said with a smile and he smiled back at me before turning me loose. As we began to walk again Steve slipped his hand in mine and interlocked our fingers. I looked at him with surprise and he smiled at me. We walked like that the rest of the way to the coffee shop.
The coffee shop was dimly lit by hanging lights and had square tables evenly spread out of the path of the walkway. On the back wall there was a built in book shelf that had books crowding it from top to bottom, and it cut off right before the counter in front of the kitchen started. There was only about nine people here so it was pleasantly quiet except for the television hanging on the right side that was turned down very low.
"So what have you've been up to lately?" Steve asked me after he sat down. He had ordered a coffee and I got hot chocolate.
"Well, I have been experimenting in the kitchen." I said
"Good experimenting or bad experimenting?" He joked.
"Good experimenting. I do cook for other people and encourage criticism, and boy do they give it." I said with a smile.
"Pretty harsh huh?"
"One time I found my friends Tony and Happy playing air hockey using one of my chocolate chip cookies as the mallet." I said. Steve almost chocked on his coffee laughing.
"Sorry, what they used it for a mallet?" He laughed and I rubbed my forehead shyly. "I'm sorry i'm laughing." He said.
"No it's okay, it really was funny. But I have gotten way better now." I said.
"I'll have to see for myself sometime." He said.
"Alright." I said before I took a sip of hot coco. "What about you?" I asked.
"I cook well enough to get by." He said.
"That's good to know, but I meant what have you been up to?" I said smiling.
"Oh, uhh... I've been working mostly." He said honestly.
"So keeping the world safe huh soldier?" I said.
"As much as I can."
"Do you ever get tired of it?" I asked.
"No, I don't. Not at all." There were a couple of moments of silence before he spoke again. "There is something that I have been meaning to ask you about..." He said and I gave him a curious look.
"Ask away." I said.
"How is the fire going?" He said looking me directly in my eyes.
"Oh, that...Well honestly its gotten a little worse, it engulfs my whole hand now, sometimes both and putting water on them only makes it go away a couple seconds. It never gets too out of hand though all I do is wait it out and it goes away." I said. Steve looked away from my eyes and seemed too be staring into space.
"What are you thinking?" I asked him. He just smiled at me and shook his head.
"Forget about it." He said. We continued to sit there and talk to each other for more than half an hour. What made me finally shut up was seeing the time on the clock on the wall in back of Steve and at the far end of the coffee shop.
"Oh my goodness it's almost midnight." I said. No wonder I was feeling so tired. Steve turned around and looked at the clock as well.
"It is sorry for keeping you out so late." He said,
"You're sorry for keeping me out? I should be the one saying that, I mean you just got back from work you must want to get home." I said.
"Home's nice but I did enjoy spending tonight with you more than I would at home." He said.
"Well thanks and I enjoyed being with you too. Uh, I have to call my ride, hold on for a sec. " I said. I pulled out my phone and pressed happy's name and than I put it against my ear. The phone ring but he didn't pick up so I called him again, and still no answer. I looked down at my phone mildly peeved.
"Is something wrong?" Steve asked and I looked away for the phone and towards him.
"My ride's not picking up the phone. Oh well I guess this means I get to go home with you tonight." I joked and Steve smiled at me. And right then Happy started calling me back. "Hello?" I answer.
"Sorry Jess I was in the bathroom." He said.
"That's way to much information." I said.
"Yeah, Yeah. Are you still at the movies?" He asked.
"No i'm at the coffee shop down the street from it."
"Okay i'm five minutes away." He said.
"See you when I see you." I said and then I hung up the phone. I looked back at Steve before I stood up and he stood up also.
"So...I guess this is it." Steve said walking over by my side.
"Yeah...Would you wait with me? It's not a long wait-" I said.
"Sure of course." He said. And we both went out side.
While we were waiting I could tell he was a little awkward about doing anything so I decided to try something.
"Steve..." I said after I turned and looked at him and then he down looked at me.
"Yes?"
Oh crap what if I head butt him? I'll just do it slow. So I went and for a kiss and he caught fast enough because he did to. He pulled me gently to him and I placed my arms over his biceps. As we kissed I felt my heart squeeze tightly and in the back of my mind I hoped that I wouldn't catch fire. Our lips moved together in sync as we stood there in front of the coffee shop and made it smell like fresh coffee around us.
When we pulled apart we still stayed in the same position and just looked at each other before we noticed that a car just pulled in front of us. It was Happy. Did he see us kissing I wondered before I stepped away from Steve.
"Well this me. Uh, would you like a ride home?" I asked Steve and he smiled at me.
"No thanks i'll be alright." He said and he opened my door for me and I got in the car. I swear as we were pulling away Steve had a unmistakable smile on his face and smiled even more then I was after seeing that.
"So... how'd it go?" Happy said in a 'I know what did' way.
"Like you did not see us." I said.
"Yeah, I did. I just wanted to know at least some detials, like was he as perfect of gentleman throught hte whole date as he was when he opened the door for you?" Happy asked.
"Well you didn't beat around the bush." I said laughing. "But yes he was, I was the one to kiss him you know." I said.
"Oh my gosh."
"What?"
"You have a lot to learn." He continued.
"What?" I said again.
"You're supposed to wait until the second or the third date to kiss." He said.
"What!? I didn't know that!"
"Yeah..."
"I thought it was okay because you tried it." I said and Happy shook his head.
"I was a 14 year old boy. Puberty roasted my brain and I was trying to do things at a fast pace."
"Oh god, I guess i'm just bolder than I thought I was" I said.
"You can say that again." Happy much to my dismay said.
"Let's just stop talking about it please." I said.
"Okay, would you like to listen to some music?" He asked.
"Sure." I said and Happy turned on the radio then "Come and Get Your Love" by Redbone started to play and I gave a little laugh.
"What is it?" Happy asked.
"Oh nothing I just like this song." I said.
Hail (hail)
What's the matter with your hair? Yeah
Hail (hail)
What's the matter with your mind and your sign? And a, oh, oh, oh-a
Hail (hail)
Nothing the matter with your head baby, find it, come on and find it
Hail
With it, baby, 'cause you're fine, and you're mine, and you look so divine
As I leaned back into my seat I closed my eyes and I expected to see Steve's face, but I didn't his it was... Clint's? I sat up and looked out of window and asked myself why was I seeing Clint's face when I haven't even met him?
Come and get your love
Come and get your love
Come and get your love
Come and get your love
Hail (hail)
What's the matter with you? Feel right
Don't you feel right baby?
Hail, oh yeah
